That night video is some spooky sh**! Makes me want to do it. LOL We love your videos. Doing the Buckskin gulch on 5/22/23 just a day hike for now, baby steps. I'm more than a little scared of those slot canyons. Headed to Sedona in 2 days to do some hiking and 4x4 trails, then to Flagstaff for Expo West on the 5/20/23. I have spent the week re-watching your videos of those areas. Thanks for documenting your hikes. It is a big help in deciding what to do.

Thanks! I love the Canon & gimbal, but they just don't work for a lot of hikes. I love buckskin gulch and was happy to be able to capture it with something besides a GoPro, for sure. Great when someone notices. And we're out there. If you see us, definitely say hi. I'll be the guy trying to discreetly talk to a camera while no one's watching.

Ha! No. They do not always go smoothly. I have a follow up video to this particular trip to explain the seriousness of flash flood risks (note the water in the Paria when we hiked out.) Worst so far (and hopefully ever) was hypothermia in Bear Canyon. Had a wetsuit, didn't put it on and jumped into my first canyon pothole and instantly regretted it. Luckily, Tina was there with me and helped me get through it. Lost fine motor skill in my hands and dropped my rappelling device...just all around stupidity. West Clear Creek in particular seems to have it out for us. The danger is real, and things don't always go according to plan.
Great video. Exactly what I needed to get a sense of the experience. I'll take a look for your guide, but wondering if you have suggestions for shortest hike from car to the slots along the gulch? I have a couple older dogs that I day hike with so I always look for shortest distance for them to go a couple miles then back out. Thank you!
If you park at the Wire Pass Trailhead, that gets you into the slot after a relatively (under 1 mile) flat hike up a wash. Doubt your dogs could make it past the rabbit hole/boulder fall, but that's 10+ miles from Wire Pass. Now that I type that, there is one spot in Wire Pass they may have problems with also. I think Upper Buckskin Gulch trailhead might be better, but I haven't done that one so you'd have to research it first. You could get in from Whitehouse, but that's about 5~7 miles, most of it in an open wash. Then you can go up Buckskin for a mile or two until you come to the boulder fall where you'd probably have to turn around

@@alanrod_2159 the Grand Canyon, Havasupai and the Wave have notorious permit systems. Swimming with no permits; the Crack at Wet Beaver Creek (I didn't name it!), Bull Pen Ranch, Water Wheel and some more don't require permits. Fossil Creek is a good one, but permits are needed. It really sucks right now. We're the COVID hotspot, so forget anything on a reservation (Havasupai, Cibecue Falls, Pacheta Falls) and there are a lot of fires (Tucson really got hit badly). It's also really hot and July will be pushing toward Monsoon season. What area of AZ are you looking at? Sedona might be an option, and the Mogollon Rim area.

Hmm. Sedona is definitely an option. You can go out south of there between Cottonwood and Sedona and there are a bunch of gravel roads west of the 89A on BLM ground. There's a bunch of stuff out there; Robber's Roost, Loy Canyon, Boynton Canyon, Long Canyon, Secret Canyon, Devil's Bridge, etc. Popular, but still pretty scenic. For Lakes, I'd go further north to the Mogollon Rim. Forest Road 300, Bear Lake, Blue Ridge Reservoir.....A fire went through part of that area (further east, I think) recently but I haven't checked it out. There's also Canyon Lake by the Supe's that is closer. Bartlett Lake, Roosevelt Lake. Haven't checked out Roosevelt either and it (and maybe Canyon) might have some fire damage also. I'm not a huge lake person, unfortunately. (Always Lake Powell if you want a road trip; I DO love that place.) Always wanted to take a razer or something up and just explore the Mogollon rim. There were some trails out by Four Peaks, but I'm thinking that whole area went up in smoke. Again, I haven't been there since the fire though.
Did you watch the guide video? I have two videos on Parunuweap and the guide one gives more detailed info if you want to go there. I had to look up a canyoneering beta for Rock Canyon to get directions to the parking area we used and unfortunately did not save all the road designations. It's really remote and very deep sand though. If we ever go back that direction, we'll air down our tires and make sure we have sand boards & a shovel. If you don't have the vehicle for that, you can also go in the 'traditional' route at Mt Carmel Junction.

Hmm. West Fork is always a great one. Just make sure you go past the maintained trail; crowds die off and the scenery gets really good. You will get your feet wet though. The Hangover Trail was a lot of fun; I wouldn't recommend riding it unless you're a pro. Tina and I just hiked it. There are always the regular hikes; Soldiers Pass, Cathedral Rock, Devils Bridge. Go early and they won't be as crowded (or hot.) Wilson Mountain is pretty too.
@@JerryArizona I'm not sure what they're calling it, but it's in between Buckskin gulch trailhead and wire pass trailhead, 1600 acres on both sides of House Rock valley road. Rangers escorted us in through the heavy black smoke. Our two trucks were the last to leave wire pass trailhead.
I did this hike yesterday. I really like your very informative videos, however you didn't tell us about the alligators! Need to bring the anti-alligator spray!
Highly recommended if you can handle the physical exercise required. Not developed into a Disney ride like Antelope Canyon, and a much wider scope of experiences. I did this in the mid-1980s when few folks were aware of the possibility. September is the rainy season in this region, so watch yourself if it clouds over. It can rain 20 miles away and not on you, yet still kill you in a flash-flood 45 minutes later. The rule is to always spot where you would evade to if and when.
We saw some in Parunuweap. I've never seen a mountain lion, but I'm sure plenty have seen me. I think for the most part they just don't want anything to do with us.
Sometimes, but not too often. We've been to Washington State and Kauai. Have a trip scheduled for Canada later this year, but we'll see how that goes with COVID and all.
Last I checked, you can just sign in at the trailhead for day hikes. But call the Kanab Welcome Center to check to confirm. You can go in as far as you want, then turn around. I recommend going in the Wire Pass Trailhead.
Love all your vids Jer! Hey quick question for the slot canyon expert. I'm taking a trip with my father to Zion and Bryce next month and staying in Mount Caramel Junction. Looking for sort of a beginners, easy access, but still cool slot canyon to just do a little light hiking through. Would this one fit the bill? Or, anything else like that near Escalante Staircase or that general area you might recommend? We've already done the Narrows and don't feel like dealing with the weekend crowds again.
If you're looking for slot canyons, it's hard to recommend anything over Buckskin. Take Wire Pass to Buckskin, go in as far as you want and then turn around. There's also Antelope Canyon, but I'm not a fan of the tours. Buckskin is one of the few that doesn't require canyoneering gear to get through also.
Ive thru hiked Buckskin 3 times now, visited a forth time part way. Good on you for mentioning to start at Wire Pass, best way to go through. Curious how far you made it towards Wire pass since that is 13 miles from your camp at the confluence. May have forwarded past so not sure if you mentioned how its a bit challenging to get permits for the better months, April and May. Bill
Not sure exactly how far we made it. A mile or so past the boulder fall, I believe. But we've been all the way through on more than one occasion. Absolutely love this hike.
You can day hike from buckskin, wire pass or whitehouse. My recommendation would be wire pass as far as you want, then turn around and go back out that way.

About two years avo we visited a small easy access slot canyon in Utah in Burr Canyon and ever since then I’ve wanted to make slot canyons a thing I do on a regular basis but have not. This re confirmed my desire to do so, thank you for the inspiration! We just got back from Utah last week from a sxs trip in Escalante. Next time we will do peek a boo and Zebra as well as go with a guide who is named Jim at Utah Canyon Outdoors. Have you been to Escalante and also to Utah Canyon Outdoors? Thank you! I have been to Escalante, but not Utah Canyon Outdoors. I highly recommend Peek a Boo/Spooky loop and Zebra. If you aren't comfortable in slots, a guide will help. There's a tricky boulder obstacle in Spooky and some people struggle on the entrance to Peek A Boo. I don't think they're bad, but that's all relative.
@@JerryArizona I’ll make note of the things you mentioned! The guide was to be able to access areas we may not normally and to also learn some good skills. He does repelling, wetsuit, and other very challenging tasks. I’ll start small and learn as much as I can! Working on my pop up camper/topper next!

Planning to go here next month via wirepass. If you were planning to go here would you skip antelope canyon tours? I'm having a hard time with the cost of the tours for a family of 4
Antelope Canyon tours herd you into a van and then take your vanload of new friends through the slot canyon. Along with dozens of other vanloads of people. You spend more time waiting for the group in front to move on than anything. Buckskin definitely gives a much 'wilder' experience. I'd go with Buckskin 100%. If you want to do Antelope Canyon, I'd recommend renting kayaks and going in from the bottom at Lake Powell.
Depends on your ability/experience. You can go in (I recommend the Wire Pass trailhead) and just turn around whenever you want. Done that way, it's not a difficult trail at all. I'd recommend that if you're just looking for a day hike. If you want to hike the entire thing to the campground, you need some experience backpacking. I made another video years ago that was more of a trail guide, if that helps. On this trip we went in Whitehouse because there was a chance of rain (Wire Pass is more open for most of the hike and you can get out to higher ground if the Paria starts flowing) and a good chance Buckskin was filled with freezing cold water in parts. Otherwise, I like to backpack from Wire Pass to Buckskin to the camoground, then exit White House. (Car shuttle required.)
Yes sir. Wide open. I don't think it has rained there since we went, but I'm not 100% positive. It was freaking snowing in Bryce (start of the Paria) the day we came out.....in June. So who knows with 2020?
That was maybe a mile upstream from the confluence of Buckskin and the Paria. If you go in by White House, it's maybe 8+ miles from the trailhead. In through Wire Pass and it's somewhere between 11~14 miles. Not 100% sure since the GPS doesn't work great in a slot that deep and guides I read gave varying distances.
I usually use a GoPro 8. On this trip, I was able to break out my Canon EOS R. The image is SO much better, but it's just not practical most of the time, so I usually stick with the GoPros. Lots of playing with settings, color correcting and grading.
Yeah, you had the place all to yourselves, until you created this. I like your content, because it’s artistic; I dig the music and camera work - but you’re aiding in the increasing overuse of the formerly quiet places by producing this stuff. You know that, right?
I realize that. And I try more and more to be careful how I share things. It's not perfect, for sure. And I do not have a good answer. We had buckskin to ourselves because we got to the camp between when previous campers had left and the next round came in. It is permit only for overnight and fills up fast in prime season. So unless someone sees this and decides to poach it, I can't add to overuse here. Yes, I know that's not the case everywhere.

I believe me and my friends trucks, were the last to be recovered, before this weekend's fire! It was intense! The Rangers were Top Notch!!

Highly recommended if you can handle the physical exercise required. Not developed into a Disney ride like Antelope Canyon, and a much wider scope of experiences. I did this in the mid-1980s when few folks were aware of the possibility. September is the rainy season in this region, so watch yourself if it clouds over. It can rain 20 miles away and not on you, yet still kill you in a flash-flood 45 minutes later. The rule is to always spot where you would evade to if and when.

We saw some in Parunuweap. I've never seen a mountain lion, but I'm sure plenty have seen me. I think for the most part they just don't want anything to do with us.

Sometimes, but not too often. We've been to Washington State and Kauai. Have a trip scheduled for Canada later this year, but we'll see how that goes with COVID and all.

Last I checked, you can just sign in at the trailhead for day hikes. But call the Kanab Welcome Center to check to confirm. You can go in as far as you want, then turn around. I recommend going in the Wire Pass Trailhead.
Love all your vids Jer! Hey quick question for the slot canyon expert. I'm taking a trip with my father to Zion and Bryce next month and staying in Mount Caramel Junction. Looking for sort of a beginners, easy access, but still cool slot canyon to just do a little light hiking through. Would this one fit the bill? Or, anything else like that near Escalante Staircase or that general area you might recommend? We've already done the Narrows and don't feel like dealing with the weekend crowds again.
If you're looking for slot canyons, it's hard to recommend anything over Buckskin. Take Wire Pass to Buckskin, go in as far as you want and then turn around. There's also Antelope Canyon, but I'm not a fan of the tours. Buckskin is one of the few that doesn't require canyoneering gear to get through also.
Ive thru hiked Buckskin 3 times now, visited a forth time part way. Good on you for mentioning to start at Wire Pass, best way to go through. Curious how far you made it towards Wire pass since that is 13 miles from your camp at the confluence. May have forwarded past so not sure if you mentioned how its a bit challenging to get permits for the better months, April and May. Bill
Not sure exactly how far we made it. A mile or so past the boulder fall, I believe. But we've been all the way through on more than one occasion. Absolutely love this hike.
Can you do any of these trails as a day hike if you don’t plan on hiking the whole buckskin?
You can day hike from buckskin, wire pass or whitehouse. My recommendation would be wire pass as far as you want, then turn around and go back out that way.

About two years avo we visited a small easy access slot canyon in Utah in Burr Canyon and ever since then I’ve wanted to make slot canyons a thing I do on a regular basis but have not. This re confirmed my desire to do so, thank you for the inspiration!
We just got back from Utah last week from a sxs trip in Escalante.
Next time we will do peek a boo and Zebra as well as go with a guide who is named Jim at Utah Canyon Outdoors.

Thank you! I have been to Escalante, but not Utah Canyon Outdoors. I highly recommend Peek a Boo/Spooky loop and Zebra. If you aren't comfortable in slots, a guide will help. There's a tricky boulder obstacle in Spooky and some people struggle on the entrance to Peek A Boo. I don't think they're bad, but that's all relative.
@@JerryArizona I’ll make note of the things you mentioned! The guide was to be able to access areas we may not normally and to also learn some good skills. He does repelling, wetsuit, and other very challenging tasks.

As of 5/11/23 new ladder in Wire Pass added less than a week ago. Buckskin Gulch was dry and so was the dirt road getting in. YMMV

25 years ago, I´ve been there. Times are changing: We didn´t need any permit then! And: Me and my wife have been the only wanderers! Believe it or not.
It's actually still pretty remote and not crowded. Most people see the mud puddles and turn around. More wilderness for me, so I'm not complaining!
Planning to go here next month via wirepass. If you were planning to go here would you skip antelope canyon tours? I'm having a hard time with the cost of the tours for a family of 4
Antelope Canyon tours herd you into a van and then take your vanload of new friends through the slot canyon. Along with dozens of other vanloads of people. You spend more time waiting for the group in front to move on than anything. Buckskin definitely gives a much 'wilder' experience. I'd go with Buckskin 100%. If you want to do Antelope Canyon, I'd recommend renting kayaks and going in from the bottom at Lake Powell.

You should check out Leprechuan Canyon or Spooky Gulch in Utah. They get so tight you can't turn your head.

Depends on your ability/experience. You can go in (I recommend the Wire Pass trailhead) and just turn around whenever you want. Done that way, it's not a difficult trail at all. I'd recommend that if you're just looking for a day hike.
If you want to hike the entire thing to the campground, you need some experience backpacking. I made another video years ago that was more of a trail guide, if that helps. On this trip we went in Whitehouse because there was a chance of rain (Wire Pass is more open for most of the hike and you can get out to higher ground if the Paria starts flowing) and a good chance Buckskin was filled with freezing cold water in parts. Otherwise, I like to backpack from Wire Pass to Buckskin to the camoground, then exit White House. (Car shuttle required.)

Yes sir. Wide open. I don't think it has rained there since we went, but I'm not 100% positive. It was freaking snowing in Bryce (start of the Paria) the day we came out.....in June. So who knows with 2020?
How far in was 3:35?
That was maybe a mile upstream from the confluence of Buckskin and the Paria. If you go in by White House, it's maybe 8+ miles from the trailhead. In through Wire Pass and it's somewhere between 11~14 miles. Not 100% sure since the GPS doesn't work great in a slot that deep and guides I read gave varying distances.
What model of camera do you use on your regular trips? has a good definition!
I usually use a GoPro 8. On this trip, I was able to break out my Canon EOS R. The image is SO much better, but it's just not practical most of the time, so I usually stick with the GoPros. Lots of playing with settings, color correcting and grading.

I realize that. And I try more and more to be careful how I share things. It's not perfect, for sure. And I do not have a good answer.
We had buckskin to ourselves because we got to the camp between when previous campers had left and the next round came in. It is permit only for overnight and fills up fast in prime season. So unless someone sees this and decides to poach it, I can't add to overuse here. Yes, I know that's not the case everywhere.
