  • How (not) to hike Robbers Roost -Sedona, Arizona
We all make mistakes. I just happen to record mine. Sometimes, you get a little relaxed in your planning. It happens to the best of us. Well...it happens to me. I was kicking several hikes around this day and hadn't really planned any well and I just decided to go. It was partially successful. A bad day hiking is still a good day, right?
First up was Robbers Roost. I'd seen the pictures and wanted to check it out. I can't help but think the people who lived there were envied by their neighbors. They had a tank right below them, a great view, and that cool round window.
I love Sedona, so I knew I couldn't go wrong, even if I didn't find it. I got there more easily than I was expecting, and discovered a whole new playground I need to get back to explore. Plenty of dispersed camping out there that I didn't know about.
Next up, it was Honanki Ruins. I found them just by looking at a GPS of the area. The ruins were...sad. They had more petroglyphs than I've seen before that close up, but almost all of them had graffiti scrawled over them. Just unfortunate.
There were some nearby ruins that I read about that I wanted to check out as well, but things really didn't go my way. I hadn't read up on the hike that much and was relying on a GPS point rather than a route. If I'd done my homework, I would have easily (maybe) continued on the path I had originally taken and reached them.
But hey, it doesn't always work out. It was still better than spending the day surfing the couch, and now I've scouted a large area with LOTS of canyons I want to explore.

Apparently there are a lot of them. I think there is one in Utah too. Haven't made it to the one in the Supes yet, but I tried.

@@JerryArizona Ya AllTrails doesn't give you the route all the way there. It took me some searching to find it.

You walked that narrow ridge just before the roost like a pro! This is a great hike for the roost and even the entirety of the scenery alone.

Also I don't remember graffiti at Honanki when we were there in 2014. Either we tend to remember only the good stuff or it happened since then. Anyway that is too bad to hear that.

Glad I’m not the only one who still messes up after dozens of hikes. Maybe one day I’ll figure this whole hiking thing out

Honanki = Bear House. Hona = Bear, Ki = house.

Great information. We were just at Robbers Roost and it really is a great place. Sad to hear about Honanki Ruins and the graffiti. Glad we found your channel. Lots of great ideas for hikes.

Ho naan ki it is hopi of our people and yes it does stand for bear house ♡ and robbers roost also called shamans cave does not have a very pleasant history pa laat ki is also the twin site Thank you for such beautiful documentation I have found personally and also from many other people their animals are very reactive to the energy of robbers Roost AKA shamans cave. It's a steep Cliff face it's better to leave them at home and many animals who have come react to the energies of the place and choose to actually wait or their owners make them wait right at The Cliff face. It's probably better off to be honest because it can be unsafe certain times of the year or if winds are really high. There were struggles between our Native American ancestors and settlers coming who mostly we're perched in Jerome so there's a lot of conflict in the area and some animals most of them pick up on that♡ so if you have a sacred four-legged you might want to leave them back for this one in the shade♡ I find it very funny that your documentation of this trip actually picked that up first hand and showed that as well please help us preserve these sites and our ancestral Homeland by leaving no trace and help us protect these sacred places so that all can enjoy for many years to come! Ahe he Thank you Askwalli 🌸

Hello! Thanks for sharing this video! How narrow was the portion with the dropoff just before the Robber's Roost comes into view around the corner? We'd like to check out this spot but I'm 6 months pregnant and while still super fit and active, I worry about my balance on super narrow ledges right now. It's hard to tell how wide it is in a video. Thanks!

Honestly, I didn't pay enough attention to it to give a good description. I'm pretty used to exposure so I didn't think twice about it. I guess it's all dependent on how comfortable you are with that type of thing. The dog was where he was because his owner didn't want to take him across the ledge, but I guess that depends on your dog (I've seen people take them to the top of Picketpost!) My recommendation would be to wear shoes that have some tread on them and go try it. If you get there and aren't comfortable, don't do it; it's a really short hike, so it's not like you'll have walked 10 miles for nothing. And if you're at all comfortable doing this type of thing, I think you'll be fine with it.

The very end is Campion by Mondays. Got it (and all my music) off Epidemic Sound.

I’m always getting lost too haha. Must be nice to have a high clearance vehicle, you have more places to access, unlike my civic lol. Nice man!

For some reason, this never appeared in my subscriptions list. Luckily it was in my suggestions this morning. :) I do find all the ruins fascinating. There's so many in the Southwest! Have you ever come across a granary when you're Canyoneering? I have come across a few when rappelling at various places. A couple even had corn still in them, which is mind boggling. But by looking at the rock, and the cliff face, I couldn't figure out how the people that made them got up to the granaries. Either they knew rope work, or the rock faces where different a few hundred years ago.

That's strange. YT does that sometimes though.
Haven't seen any canyoneering. I hope to get out into the Sierra Ancha Wilderness more this year for some canyoneering. And they're always opening new routes in Sedona. It would be really cool to come across something most people can't get to.

I probably forgot to put them in there. I just added them at the end of the description.
