For those that are still wondering how to change the cylinder if you cannot turn the key, you do not have to force it or break it!
There is a small detent on the outer ring, justnear the bottom facing the driver. A simple screwdriver or pick inserted there will allow you to compress the cylinder ring and slip past the pins. Then, when its in the ON position, the rest of the process to change the cylinder is quite simple.
I have AAA and called out the locksmith because I could NOT turn the key at all, even after removing the cowlings and trying lubrication, etc.
The locksmith sat down and in 5 seconds had the truck running. We changed the cylinder at this point and its all good.
FWIW, the AAA membership saved my backside, and that ONE covered event paid for the whole service for a year. Not that I am selling AAA or anything like that, but its worth the investment to me. Now I know how, I am unlikely to ever need to do this again, because the new cylinder will outlive my 2002 Chevy.
Good luck to anyone who finds this post helpful, or is in need of this information!
U saved my but thank u
This is the most helpful video on GMC lock cylinder, and ignition module, replacement. I used this technique on our 2000 Envoy. No need to take off the steering wheel like other videos propose. Trickiest part is removing the plastic covers on the steering column. There are two torq screws accessible from the bottom. Take those out, remove the steering column adjustment lever (I used pliers for a firm grip, and pull straight out) then using flat head screwdrivers push & pull on the bottom column cover to remove. Swearing helps. Once it's removed, there is a reverse torq screw holding the top cover in place. I used a small socket that fit, the screw is not in real tight. Then the top cover can be pushed and pulled till it's off. Remember to disconnect the battery. Once covers are off, simply follow the directions in the video to take out the lock cylinder. If the key & cylinder won't rotate, there is a small bronze-coloured tab below the cylinder you can push in and the key will turn to the crank position (I got this off another RUclips video---on the Envoy, with the steering column cover on, there is a small access tab on the lower right side of the cover [at about 4 o'clock when facing the steering wheel] which can be easily popped off to allow a plastic prod to be pushed in to compress the tab. Without the column covers on, you can push the tab with your finger.) The ignition module could also be switched out if needed, it is accessible with the covers removed-again, no need to remove the steering wheel. Thanks for the great video, saved me time working in 28 degree cold. I knew it had to be easier than taking off the steering wheel, a few years ago the key in our 1998 Jeep would not turn, our local mechanics came over, towed the car to their shop and were back with a working cylinder in about 1/2 hour. They must have used some version of the technique outlined in this video.
wow thanks
Great instructional video,
I swapped out the lock cylinder on my 2005 Silverado in 20 minutes!
New lock cylinder with keys cost me $50, dealer wanted $330, parts and labor.
Thank you,
My 2005 Silverado is acting up and I believe it is the ignition. Power stays on to radio even after key is out and doors open and shut. Do you think this will solve my issue?
to remove shroud, remove two t20 from bottom. remove bottom half. there's an inverted torx in front of the ignition switch. it holds the top half of the shroud down. I used a 4mm socket to remove that. then tilt the wheel all the way down and fight the top shroud off.
This way was much easier than programming a new key. Would it be the same way on a 2006 Buick lacrosse? Great video
What if the old key don't turn the switch to the on position can I still change it.
My current problem
@@jamessteyn980me too right now
@@jamessteyn980 figure it out? I have same issue
I used a hairpin to push the bottom locking bar@@WilsonGamingYT
Excellent video my friend, very quick and to the point, nice and clear instructions with no back story
Very helpful video. Really wish you did one showing the replacement of the door lock being that it should be one key for both
I switched out my old stuck bad ignition with a new one off eBay & everything went as you said, fairly easy, Only now the truck wants to start and sometimes does start but dies right away. My truck has never done that, do you think the new ignition that seems to work perfectly somehow isn't allowing it to run?
(I did have the negitive battery disconnected until i was done) could i have possibly shorted out something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
you rock all the other instructions are so complicated. They go on about removing the steering wheel.
I appreciate the clear video. I have a 2001 Silverado in which the ignition turns without any key! Would this be a lock cylinder also?
You weren't kidding about the shroud being the hard part. It's a freaking jigsaw puzzle where the parts don't quite align. Thank you though, the replacement was easy!
I don't know why they wanted to charge me 100.00 to do this at a shop. But thanks for the video. Saved me that money. Great help. And so dang easy!!
Excellent video , but this tutorial can work for Silverado 3500 2005? Thanks
Soooo easy. Thanks a lot. This is only gonna cost me about $45 as opposed to whatever some mechanic would have wanted.
Granbusken, if you have an automatic transmission it should be the same procedure as detailed in the video. There is no anti-theft in the keys. Thank you for your interest in Standard Brand.
I have a 2003 suburban and it seems the ignition cylinder and key are messed up. I can't turn the key in the ignition at all but the key works in all of the doors. how might I get the old ignition cylinder out if the key can't be turned at all?
thanks,
Marc
My tumblers are broken so I can't turn to on position. Can you give me any tips on how to do it instead of drilling, tapping, or wd-40? I need a solution.
Is this procedure affected at all by a fob?
uh yeah how do i turn the key when someone broke my cylinder and tried stealing my truck?
Great question Eienstine "Duffimus"......Perfect..
I changed the ignition cylinder switch because my Tahoe got stolen. We found out that they were using any random Chevy to start our Tahoe. After switching the ignition cylinder switch we found out that it could still be turned on with any key or screwdriver just by putting a little pressure and turning it. How could this issue be fixed since we already replaced the ignition cylinder switch and it could still be turned on with mostly any object.
Can I take the key and ignition from a different truck and swap it into my truck or would I need the pcm for that ? Currently swapping a 4l80 into my 5.3 and my friend said I can get his harness and pcm but at that point I’d have to delete the vats to be able to start the truck cause key would be different but if I swap his ignition over and use his key it would start so just trying to see if this would work because it would be cheaper than buying hp tuners and deleting the vats
i have a 2005 ZR2 Blazer and replace my vehicle's ignition lock cylinder. it starts and turns off but i cant turn it to the eauxillary spot or pull the key out what did i not do or do wrong this was my first time doing this and with this video it was not hard. thanks for you doing this video .
Truck still runs after key is to turned off and removed in 99 tahoe...I have aftermarket viper remote start alarm also the key is worn and sometimes have to wiggle it to get it to turn...do you think it's the ignition and key? Need advice before I spend all sorts of money on meaningless parts...
so you have to go to dealer for new tumbler and keys??? do they have them in stock usually? what about finding online like ebay or amazon?i usually find most of my parts there or in my local junkyard....looks like a pretty simple....thanks..
WOW!!! I actually can't wait to perform this repair after watching this! Saving lots of $$$!!!
now what if using the pick doesn't work? what would you do then?
Does the key need programing?
Very informative video, I just replaced mine in my 02 Silverado this evening. Thanks for the help!
Hi, Good video, better than the others. I have a 97 GMC Sierra. Problem is, removing the top & bottom shrouds from the steering column. The hole for the key cylinder is one piece with the upper shroud and with the black plastic key shroud on the key cylinder it can't be removed. Is there another way to access the push hole to release the key cylinder?
How do you do it without the key though? Dad lost them in the snow.
Wow, great advice! Was able to do my Ignition Lock Cylinder in about a 1/2 hour with this tutorial! Thanks
Easy enough, but.... what if the tumblers are possibly bent and I can't turn the ignition switch. How can I replace it?
Did you figure it out ?
u have to break it piece by piece
Does the new lock also open doors?
what if key does not even turn? can i still insert that pick into the hole and it'll come out?
Did you figured it out ? I'm with the same problem ...
No, because the clip is turned 180 degrees from the access hole.
Do you think this would work for a 2006 Hummer h3?
I have a 1998 GMC, and i lost the key, can i get a new cylinder with new keys without needing to reconfigure it?
Could I do this even though I don't have my keys any more? Do I need my old keys?
What if it won't turn to the crank position?
what size torx did you use? t20?
Hello, My name is David. I really need some help. I have a 99 Suburban 1500 4wd. The security light was on for a few weeks but there was no problems. I left the lights on, battery went dead, I jumped it to start it but all it does now is start for a half second and shuts down. had a couple look at it and they say its the factory security system. Any thoughts or advice on this would be greatly appreciated..
Done everything you say cannot turn the key to ignition crank position. ignition key will not turn so now what do I do
Done all that but cannot turn the ignition switch key to crank position now what can I do
There are no torx screws underneath the hosing on my 2003 2500hd. Any suggestions?
My key cylinder is frozen and will not turn to ignition position. Yes I tried my back up keys and cleaning and all the normal troubleshooting things. How do you remove the cylinder if completely frozen?
is it really this simple? my dads truck has had a bad tumbler for years. I am going to fix it now.
Is this the same proceedure for 1997 GMC Sierra? Thanks
have done lots of these, and one of the big reasons they need to be replaced is they won't turn. its fine and good that it has to be in that forward position to release the tap, but when it doesn't turn, you grab it with a pair of channel locks and turn it, all the guts of the cylinder break, but its in the forward position, release the tab, it comes out, there's usually no damage to the housing, sometimes a bit of a scuff mark on the outside of the hole from the pliers, but just put new coded cylinder in and put it back together. sounds simple enough, but you need to get a good bite on the outside of the cylinder so it will turn, or else it slips, and sometimes can make more work for your self, if you break the outside of the cylinder off.
After changing do you have to change the locks in the door also?
+Jason Basquez If you want to spend the money--you can just add the new ignition key to your key ring and keep the original door key.
I need to know how to change the passcode lock sensor and pull the steering wheel off on a 2002 GMC Envoy SLE
how do I get my original keys to work with my new cylinder
So i swapped it without a problem now the the engine won't turn over. Plz help!
what size are the torx screws that hold the lower steering wheel cowling in place? I can see up there for crap
I followed your video and It worked.... but now the new Ignition cylinder will now turn back into the ACC: position to listen to the radio have I done something wrong?
What if the cylinder will not turn to get to the push pin lock , I purchased you lock cylinder thinking it was held in with a bolt.
so how do you replace one if the lock won't turn to the crank position ?
sht worked fine one min next it left the starter cranking then once i got it to turn back the key is still locked in the cylinder and it will not turn far enough to crank now ..
I have the same issue,
You have to tap on it and it will turn
Thanks for all the comments. Unfortunately without being in front of the vehicle we can't give specific advice. If you are having trouble we recommend you take your vehicle to your local repair shop. You don't want to risk causing further damage. Thanks again!
hey man ! is that the same for a 99 Chevy Blazer 4x4 ?
Nice video. How would I do this on a 2004 Yukon? Looks the same.
▪️▪️▪️▪️So we replaced ours in a 2005 buick rendezvous & it came with new lock cylinder and set of keys. The ignition comes on but won't start we keep getting SECURITY light after the battery light. I've tried the ignition on for 10 minutes cycle already. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help! ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️
So, this is the same for a 2008 silver ado?
What if the tumblers are bent & I can’t turn the ignition switch! How can I replace it?
Thanks a lot you saved me a lot of money
What is the "proper position"?
What symptoms might alert one to replace such cylinder?
2002 Chevy s-10 4cyl 2.2liter Standard transmission
Started by having to fight with the key for 5 minutes to get it to crank. took it to a mechanic and he replaced the Ignition Switch(wires) but could not replicate our problems. it worked for a few days and stopped cranking period, however we could still push it off. everyone including the lot we are buying it from says Security. we bypassed the security and now it's completely locked out.
Will replacing the Lock Cylinder Fix this?
Hello, I have bad problem i can't teck out the starter switch is lock 2001 gmc sierra
Great video. It saves me a lot of money. Simple and makes sense.
I lost my key.............what if I don't have a key to rotate it in the crank position........can you still remove it?
My key won't turn. That's why I think I need to replace it. What do you do if you can't turn the key?
Thanks for your vid, I have 1997 Silverado, is it done the same way?
And there is no theft-coding to the keys?
Thank u so much for the video. Just replaced mine today! Big help

Do I need to twist pick to unlock
Could I do this in a 2000 GMC Sierra?
14PANCHOKID they are the same from 99 to current
very helpfull just done mine in 10 min thank you so much
What if I don't have a key?
Nevermind. I just broke the little clips that hold it together. There were no screws that held it together just clips- which some are broken now. Guess I'll get some velcro to keep it together.
how do I change it if I lost my key
daniel pina same here buddy, what was your solution?
Take the vehicle VIN # + proof of ownership to a locksmith & they can make a key for you.
What about the locks for the doors? How to get those rekeyed to new ignition keys? Yeah you can carry two keys. I'd rather not.
I took my cylinder out but now I can't get the new one or the original one back in. What should I do it doesn't go all the way in..is there a trick to do? Or what might be the problem
+john mosley The new cylinder has to be properly aligned so that the tab on the cylinder will catch when you push it in during the replacement.
Great simple instructional video. Thanks keep the great videos coming.
I love what u have shown me thanks
I HAD TO STICK A LARGE FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER DOWN INSIDE THE HOUSING TO ALIGN THE BOTTOM SECTION SO MY NEW CYLINDER WOULD DROP INTO PLACE
What would I need to do if I misplaced my key?
what if your if your keys were lost how how do rotate the barrel
Drill it out with a drill is your only option to be honest
Thank You for the video. Nice job.
Thanks!
It would have been nice to see how the top caver came off.
The bottom cover screws are obvious. top...not so much
