      I second this! I've seen in a tiny home build, a island version where when its in place the wheels are tucked up under the unit and looks like a permanent structure.....but it was all made to be a seemless easy transition for the wheels to be accessible for moving.

    I think vertical. Don’t forget to think about the circulation path. As you’re moving from the dining room through the kitchen down to the bathrooms. I would align the front of the island with the door to go down to the bathrooms. So when you walk up through the back door you get a straight shot through to the view. As an architecture student, always think about circulation. Also I think that sink needs to be centered on the window. Great vid as always.

    • @gblakev
      @gblakev 3 года назад

      No, don't center the sink under the window. They need as much counter space between the sink and the stove as they can find. As long as they can look out the window easily while standing at the sink, they will be happy.

    I vote horizontal! I just imagine the kitchen being a gathering place. Especially for you two. Horizontal would allow you to add seating around the island and do any prep-work while talking directly with friends. It definitely cuts off the space a bit, but for good reason!

    Horizontal seems the best to me. It gives you a wide open kitchen and separates the kitchen from the dining room. If you have guests in the dining room, you can still work at the island and visit with them. If you have some kind of buffet/self-serve situation, the island right by the dining room would be convenient.

    Team horizontal! People tend to naturally gather in the kitchen during a party and if you add seating on the other side of the island, it facilitates conversation and cooking at the same time. Also, as you're in the midst of the renovation, don't forget to add some kind of utility closet for a broom, vacuum, mop, etc. An outlet in the closet is also nice if you have the kind of vacuum that needs to be charged. It's super convenient to have this storage near the kitchen and living room. A natural place would be under the stairs but I also love the vision you have going. Best of luck with it all!

    Horizontal! Even though vertical looks beautiful, it seems to makes the area less functional. Your slide out pantry and refrigerator will be cutting it close to the island. There’s also an excess gap between the dining table and kitchen. With that lovely view out the window I think horizontal is the way to go! I love you guys so much! Can’t wait for the new merch 💕

  • @CatCalhoun

    I really like the suggestions about putting it on locking wheels. That could be a cool modern/industrial look. If you go with a more permanent placement, the only real problem I see with the 'vertical' placement is that it blocks off access to the future pantry. That would bug me over time. Then again, I have an allergy to galley kitchens, so. . .

    My parents renovated their kitchen years ago and the whole design of the island was based solely on how they wanted everyone to congregate around it when they were entertaining. They have a big space so they were able to do sorta like a T shape where the horizontal part is where they do food prep and can still be social and then the vertical part is like bar-stool height so people can sit down and chat, nibble on cheese, sip on their sparkling, etc. It's actually one of the main gathering points in the house.

    I like the island horizontal you can put slightly into the kitchen and put an eating bar on the back. That way you’ll have a nice big workspace and extra seating. Also when it’s vertical it seems tight for the pull out you want to do under the stairs. Plus when you’re working at the island you can face your company who sitting in the dining/living room.

    Keep the island horizontal, the pull out shelves under the stairs would create a strong tension point and be tight otherwise. Also creates a natural feel for prepwork or serving space between the kitchen and dinning table, a lot more involved in guests.

  • @buffytune

    I think that the island might be horitzontal. The reason is simple, when you are cooking and you need to take anything from the pantry, if the island is vertical you will have to go around it to get to the pantry, it's in the middle of the room and I think it's not practical to gave got something in the middle of your working space while cooking.
    Anyway, I'm sure you guys will do an amazing renovation of the kitchen.🥰
