Ha, the Vulcan salute, how appropriate for this channel.
Hadn't caught that one before. My own military training usually has me looking for some non-member "looking for Indians" -- early in basic training we literally were not allowed to salute until we had been properly instructed in how to. Watch the end of "Logan's Run" where an extra started to raise his hand, then hesitated, then raised it back up in a Vulcan salute.
My late friend's Jewish neighbors had some Star Trek type of stuff (I seem to recall) as well as Judaica. One was a sculpture of two hands with the "Vulcan salute." The thing is that Leonard Nimoy took that from a Jewish blessing gesture, one which mimics the letter shin for HaShem ("The Name" since that commandment forbids you from even saying The Name -- as said elsewhere (ie, "Mein Bester Feind"), Christians have no idea how to read the Bible). Live long and prosper.
Did you also notice, Kowalski from Voyage to the bottom of the sea, Dr.Smith from Lost in Space, and of course MacGyver.
@@terrypold And Sacara and Daniels wife are actors from oryginal Stargate movie ;)
in the feature length recut they changed it to "jerry rig", who ever did that should be burned as a heretic
Oh that is heresy of the highest order! How dare they.
I believe they also remove Samantha Carter's line: "Just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside doesn't mean I can't handle anything you can."
WE SHALL BEGIN THE CRUSADE TO ERADICATE THIS HERETIC!
Probably under orders of legal department.....
I agree! Worst heretics ever.
If you think the reference to "MacGuyver" is amusing you should see the blooper scene when Tapping and RDA were in a glacier, while digging in the ice she broke character and said "..stuck with Macguyver...." the look on RDA's face.....priceless!

Just watched the clip, now THAT put a smile on my face.
That one made me laugh so hard. God I miss this series more than any other.
I love the comment about how the gate is guarded 36 hours a day. We are not in Kansas anymore Toto.
36 hours per day???
One can easily do the 40-hour workweek in just 2 days... Already included 24 hours of rest and food breaks.
uh yea? Abydos day consists of 36 hours. It says its day, but our days include the night in our 24 hour clock so maybe the same thing here. 24 sun light 12 of darkness, hard to say since they also have 3 moons.
@@ravinraven6913 If Abydos isn't a dual star system, it will also have on average it in half. Which means 18h day. 18h night. When they are at the equator. Depending on latitude and axle shift it can differ where the gate is located.
3:45 RDA: "I'm a verb now...(tilts head)... I think I can be okay with that"
According to Amanda Tapping what we see in the episode is his reaction to hearing it for the first time because she adlibbed this line (it was scripted as jerry rigged)
Carter: "You really will like me when you get to know me"
Me, who has seen the entire show: "You have no idea..."
The "MacGyver a system" is extremely appropriate--as SG1 has had to explain to the Asgard _how_ they got their gate running a couple of times. The Asgard generally are unable to comprehend what the humans did--and at best comprehend it as extremely reckless
to this day "jerry rig, mguiver" is the smartest man ever to walk the earth
it really is the equivalent of ripping out the cockpit of a 747 and controlling everything by grabbing individual wires and tapping them together. :p
@@Wrincewind. ... careful, that comment might have Boeing decide you are a whistleblower =P
@Wrincewind. So, Spirit airlines?
Yeah, SG1 basically went "wait there was supposed to be a dialing device? we just applied shit tons of current directly to the control paths till we figured something that worked"
Now you'd only need one GTX 3080 to do it in 10 minutes, but it will still take 15 years to find one and ship it from Hong Kong.
🤣😂
So optimistic, I like that.

Thankfully once ethereum moved to proof of State rather than proof of work, the crypto market collapsed almost immediately upon hitting the window where the ROI was passed that change, and the market almost immediately within a week or two stabilized to normal. And despite that my dumbass coworker at the time insisted that a 10% tariff on goods from China was why the video card prices were doubled and difficult to find rather than the crypto lunatics buying them all up and he himself had like freaking 23 of them. Dumbass.
Nice nod to Richard Dean Anderson's earlier show.
There's a great blooper clip from the episode where Carter and O'Neill are stranded, she gives out to him "come on man, you were MacGyver for years, you telling me you can't fix this with a paperclip and some gum?!"

I appreciate when Scifi stuff adjusts common phrases to match the setting. Especially when it doubles as exposition
I love that too. It's such a great way to add exposition that sounds natural without info-dumping.
Like in the original Battlestar Galactica episode ("Greetings from Earth" maybe?) where the Colonial Warriors keep referring to a unit of time as a _centon._ Michael (Randolph Mantooth) finally gets exasperated enough to ask "What's a centon?". 😁
glad to find this comment
The reason it worked so well, is due to the phenomenal cultural impact of MacGyver. It wasn't just a pun, but a legitimate idiom.
Story is that RDA didn't know that line was going to be in there, and the shot of his face is his reaction to hearing it.
Oneill was supposed to be much more serious initially, but they wanted RDA and he only would agree if he could act the character in his own way (he hated serious-military-tough-guy-characters). This is the first episode and the quirky humoristic feel of Oneill was predominately on RDAs initiative. Its not improbable that things like the Stargate throw and this were RDAs ideas in the first place.
@@tomitiustritus6672 An in-universe reason for O'neill's behaviour in the movie can be explained by the fact that his son had just died. For all we know, Jack has always been Jack, we just first saw him at his worst.
@@aceman67 Another theory: The movie was an alternate reality version of what happened before the series.
@@hvandijken5905 more plausible because the distance to Abidos also shrank in the transition to the show.
Though I do believe they did flash back to the movie time period and RDA did act it closer to how Kurt Russell did
RDA? Royal diploma of ashats? Ready, Don't ask? Really Ditsy anonymous?
Stargate was SUCH a Great Show .
This is such a great series(SG-1 that is). So many great little nods to clasics in this clip. "Live long and prosper", "Dr Livingstone, I presume" and of course "McGyver" 😊
Proper writers enjoying themselves. Not the GenZ tosh we get nowadays.
Ah, back before they went with the P90's.
It was the pilot episode.. if it didn't receive well, getting P90s would just add to the budget loss.
But thankfully it became a sci-fi staple.
Pretty sure the PDW weapons program was made for the SG program in-canon. They needed a anti-armor weapon for Jaffa.
In reality, the actors were getting annoyed at hot brass from blanks being flung at each other. The P90 ejects straight down, much more convenient.
@@Verbose_Mode No, not at all. The actual story behind switching to the P90 was that the North American market for 9mm blanks was being sucked dry by all the shows using them at the time. No one was using the P90 and 5.7mm blanks. So MGM snatched those up.
...and once they emerged from the gate its nice to have your fellow soldiers (airmen) covering you ......with weapons pointed at your back!

The Macgyver line, meta self - awareness, reminds me of the episode of _Mork & Mindy_ where Mindy is cleaning their apartment and she's humming or singing the theme to _Laverne & Shirley._ That is meta because Mork actually *MET* Laverne on an episode of _Happy Days!_
did i see "Mindy" on NCIS as the nosy journalist when Gibbs was not allowed to work ?

just watching this literally five minutes ago (never watched stargate sg1 ever) and this line got me. grew up watching macguyver!!!
you must be clipping sg1 and star trek at the same time, thanks for your work . loving it. and best scenes.
Since wormholes traverse not only space, but time as well, someone who's good at editing these videos ought to make a video in which Jack steps through a portal and exits face-to-face with MacGyver.
😆
The look on his face after she says that! LOL!
The line was especially added for old folks like me that watched him in McGuyver :)
I mean, this show went on air just 2 years after the McGuyver films came out, McGyver was still a cultural phenomenon at the time. Heck the reason the show got on the air and got people hooked was in many ways because Richard Dean Anderson was the lead.
@@Mukation plus it was only 5 years after the MacGuyver show ended. It's funny how distant they seemed from each other.

Watching them go through the wormhole for the first time on the big screen was frikken amazing!!!!!!!

Sha're is the hot one.
It's always surprising the things they started phasing out in the later seasons such as the ice on the cheeks, how everyone spoke English and the full experience. Yes, I know it's to save time etc.
Good ol macgyver
I gotta say, the sound the portal makes during transport is still iconic to me. It's mysterious and unsettling, but also makes sense because of what its doing.

i have been lucky enough to meet her a couple of times, she remembered where she met me too, what a nice lady i had a slow dance with her too, amanda hi from the broken hand guy......
This is a scene I have frequently quoted as one of my favorite inside jokes and how they didn't make a heavy handed big deal of it. I have always loved how casually they mentioned Richard Dean Anderson's most famous role then just moved on. Just a side glance from Mr. Dean.
a reminder that it took only 2 trucks to open the gate that one episode so its not a matter of energy, but how damn efficient it is at using it to make that wormhole
maybe it was already partly charged
"36 hours a day"
The planet they're on has longer days.
I love little bits like that. It's not focused on. You have to catch it.
Ah, the early days when they could spend a whole minute on the psychedelic CGI (?) of travelling through the gate network. They even had the bit of frost on McGuyver's -- I mean, O'Neill's face.
Colonel O'Neill: "Who's MacGyver?"

Lmao I’ve so many beanie skits I thought this one was a Star Trek episode.

@tjwparso : On to Stargate now? Cool. I think you have a few seasons of TNG left to go. Also, your gate graphic isn't quite perfect. The Stargate (Milky Way and Pegasus galaxy models) have 9 evenly spaced chevrons (the glowing triangles around the edge), not 8. But 2 are normally hidden from view because they are encased in the stone base that holds it upright.
Don't worry I'm still having fun watching/uploading TNG... just love Stargate, seeing how you all react to some SG1 clips, whether or not people will like them... turns out there are plenty stargate fans subbed, makes me happy :) ... as for the outro, I'll make it better, didn't want to sink ages into the outro only to get thousands of Trek fans shouting at me for uploading stargate :P
Some of the offical box sets actually made the same mistake
@@AWriterWandering It's an easy mistake to make. The franchise don't have a lot of good shots of gates without the base in SG1 until late in the series and the 9th Chevron isn't even mentioned until SGU.
SG-1 clips ? Allrighty then !
36 hour days...the sleep pattern must be complicated for someone from Earth. I wonder how long it was before he got used to it.

You're right. It's all downhill after 8 hours 😉
That's 3 supercomputers from the 90s, these days you could probably run the gate off a smartphone...
When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the suction of a toilet bowl and thought exactly this at touching. You can see the fluctuations in the event horizon....
and you never see the ice on them again....
Didn't realize you also uploaded Stargate
great show.
daniel: "Jack, i have something you need to see"
👍😎 Yeah the MacGyver reference was when I knew I was going to like Stargate SG1. Felt like the writers, producers and cast were going to pay respect to the source material, but still have some fun as well!
They shortened the "trip" and removed the "cold effect" in later episodes, I guess to save time and money?
the SGC did create their own DHD and ignored
safety measures when locking onto worlds etc.
personally, I like to retcon the ice effect etc.
as something they caused with their rig
then eventually learned to fix / avoid
That too, but I think it was a concept that was bound to be abandoned. It was interesting in the first episode, but it wouldn't work in subsequent travels. It's just too repetitive to have the cast go through the chill phase every time they walk through the gate. They had to make gate travel casual, there was no choice here.
O'Neil: "Who the fuck is MacGyver?"
the Macgyver was there listening, lol.
Carter: 😮
Jack: *YEET*
Love me some sg1! Do DS9 next ;)
two things Share..............😍😍
And how much I love this show.
Ah, the first few episodes where they used to get thrown out the gate, sometimes faces looking like they just took a puff from a fire extinguisher.
First thing I notished as a discrepancy, a big contradiction was how the "wormhole" was working in the movie compared to how it was working in the series.. in the movie they talked about moleculair decomposing and rebuilding to normal on the other side, in the series they show it as a very long tunnel through space.
She was so damn good in this role.
Hard to believe: 1997, almost 30 years ago
My grancha recorded them for me weekly on VHS when I went away to Uni !
More than 20 years since I saw SG-1 for the first time and only now I realise how lovingly and realistically the series was made, at least in its early days.
Sha're doesn't wear a bra, 3:10 and that's why she's shy :p
Daniel punching well above his weight there.
Well, she *did* think he was a god when they first met....
Would you “see” anything between the time you demolecularize and remolecularize? I know Star Trek NG did a episode on what people see whilst being transported.
no you wouldn't. There is nothing that could see anything, nor anything that could process the images.
No, your brain would be deconstructed into its base molecules - nothing there to process the wormhole.
Anyone know were we can get good res for this? always remember watching it in good quality as a kid, but MGM have it set to like 480p
They certainly didnt keep up the covered in frost when you exit the gate
3 point slings, oh the hubris
Amanda Tapping loves Richard Dean Anderson's 1980's MacGyver work
Every time I watch your channel, I seem to like canned beans. Are you doing marketing work for the food companies like Heinz, McCain, Jimmy Dean, and others?
She was totally flagging him with her gun while walking up the ramp but at least her finger was no where near the bang switch.
Strong, the fourth wall is, with this show
They trimmed down the jump scenery quite a bit over the years!
It's like Sailor Moon's transformation sequence. After the first time, it's as long a it needs to be to fill time.
I'd like to know how they got rid of being 'frosted" over as the series progressed. Anyone?
