I really wish they had put something into an early SG-1 episode, asking Teal'c why he decided to trust the humans from Earth. Teal'c could have said, "Because O'Neil reminded me of a great teacher I had when I was a child.
This would have been a reference to an episode of MacGyver, in which MacGyver was teaching a high school class where Christopher Judge played a student.

@@Leo-vx6cv Yeah, IIRC he was on two episodes. And not an extra but a actually acting with Dean. As mentioned the one, he was a student in class that got picked by MacGuver to demonstrate a event and they exchange some phrases and do some action etc.
As well there were many episodes where the actor (forgot the name now) that was the General Hammond in SG-1 and he was as well co-actor.
It is actually funny to watch old 80's and 90's shows, as you find quickly how many star started from small parts in various different series and then they got to movies and got name...
But Judge, Andersson and "Hammond" were already familiar to each others from MacGyver when they started to do SG-1.
That is why I think that while Judge told the story to be casted as Teal'c, that I always imagine that Andersson would have given a slight suggestion for his selection, you know, from the past....

Absolutely loved Stargate SG1, it just worked so well with each Episode being a different Story, though with a common thread and the Cast took it way beyond the original Movie, which was cool, but each of the characters in SG1 made their own mark...They don't write this level of Shows anymore , however look at the depth of characters, Daniel Jackson was wise, knowledgeable, yet also emotionally flawed in many ways and Sam Carter was such a strong character, very clever, problem solver, tough as hell, with a touch of empathy...and beauty. I always felt Jack used his humour to be likable, to be part of the team, but always knew when to kick it up a notch and lead, get in the Fight and Teal'c was a born Warrior, yet humble, respective. It was a lesson in Human Traits and Morals, without being Preachy...I wish current Writers/Studios could learn this balance. Anyway, loved the Show...Absolute Professionals, all the way.

My Richard Dean Anderson story is from about 30 years ago when I worked as a building inspector for the city of Riverside California. I stopped at a Subway restaurant for lunch and as I got out of my car I noticed three children playing in a van in the parking lot. As I walked past the van to the restaurant the children froze and stared at me as I walked by. I entered the Subway restaurant and walked directly to the bathroom to wash my hands and when I came out, there were the children with their parents standing behind them waiting for me. They were convinced that I was Richard Dean Anderson, from the MacGyver show and wanted my autograph. I explained that I was not him, but they insisted on the autograph, apparently not believing me, so I gave them a MacGyver autograph on a napkin and they left the restaurant happy. 30+ years later I still have a slight resemblance to Mr Anderson, except that my hair has not turned gray yet, due to the genes that I inherited from my father.

While I did enjoy the character of MacGyver I was kept from totally enjoying the show due to the fact that my knowledge of physics and how things work in general allowed me to instantly realize that 99-percent of what he did would not actually work at all in real life. Every once in a while he would do something that was at least somewhat plausable - or at least close to it - but most of the time everything he did was completely impossible. But I suppose that even if they had had writers who understood science more it would still be impossible to come up with that many realistic MacGyverings in every episode.

The other thing you had to roll with was availability of the items. He always got locked up (or whatever) with exactly what was needed for that situation, it was exactly the right size and in the right amount. Sometimes that stretched a little too far for me, especially in later seasons but imagine how that would play out if they tried to make it scientifically accurate as well. Sometimes (rarely) in entertainment comes out a perfect storm of characters, chemistry between them, irony, good stories........
I don't want to belittle the film that started it all, but SG1 was truly that storm.
He took the good original premise of a story and brought it to a magnificent level.
The spinoffs weren't bad at all but they owed everything to the original series.

Agree. Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis were _so much better_ than the movie. It's rare for a show to completely overshadow a massive blockbuster movie. I actually can't remember a single show that has done this outside of Stargate..

I know they are all old, but they can still pull off an SG1 mini-series. O’Neil can be a retired general who gets dragged out of retirement. Carter can be a professor, Jackson can be doing something. And maybe Tealc disappeared, and that’s the catalyst. Of course, the Stargate program is huge and semi-public especially with Atlantis sitting in the middle of the Pacific ocean.

Ensemble casts that have chemistry often have longer runs. Look at Emergency, Stargate SG-1, Blue Bloods, Gunsmoke. All from different eras, but they had an ensemble cast, with a core star or stars that had a good time while they worked and it showed. Good writing was important, too. These things made them hits in their own time and in syndication.

In Brazil, Stargate was an incredible show, yet it pales in comparison to the cultural phenomenon that MacGyver became. Even today, it's quite Hard (Dean Anderson, Hahaha) not to associate Richard Dean Anderson with MacGyver. His face or the iconic Rush's Tom Sawyer intro instantly brings Mac back to our memories, since in Brazil, they used that intro to announce the episodes. Back then, they would trim lengthy show intros and replace them with songs they deemed more appealing.

Thank to both of you and all involved for sweetness in my life. The level of love and respect that came off that screen, boy i tell ya. RDA was perfect for Stargate. In fact, without him I doubt it would have been successful. He understood how to present the show as a perfect blend of drama but never too serious, light hearted in many ways. Fun. that was what made the show so watchable and rewatchable. It was fun. It is fun. It continues to be fun.

I agree. I think a lot of that was because there was nearly always a combination of the four main characters in SG1 in each episode. With MacGyver, there was Dana Elcar and the recurring guests for a fair number of episodes but no regular group for the most part. So SG1 had more opportunity for them to play off each other.

Love both shows! On a number of occasions I have anused myself by MacGyvering solutions to things. I think one of my favorite episodes of SG1 is when someone made copies of the team and O'Neil gets in an argument and fight with his double. Not sure, but I think it may have been Dom DeLouise who made the doubles. He was on SG1 a few times. I think one of his real life sons was a love interest of Sam's for a while. Some years ago there was a submarine adventure show that eventually had 3 of Dom's sons on as regulars. Don't know how many kids Dom has in total. I watched that series sometime last year.

Way back when, I had subscribed to Showtime in order to get the new Outer Limits because I was and am such a fan of that 60s classic. During its entire run, I was only impressed by one episode. Most were ho-hum, some okay, but I’ve never watched them since. As that was winding down, Showtime kicked off Stargate SG-1 so I hung with the pay channel a little longer. While the movie had been visually impressive, it was more a pleasant curiosity than an engaging film. The series was consistently good, often great, and became must-see viewing. I also bought the DVDs later on and have enjoyed repeated viewings when time permits, but I do have to admit that after the defeat of Anubis, it dropped off a bit (and I loved Ben and Claudia… and Morena). The Ori just didn’t work for me. I stuck with Atlantis until the end but there’s something in the design of that one that puts me off. SGU really worked, loved it, but sadly didn’t last. If there’s more Stargate of any kind to come, I’m in.
