  • This cabin is strange, but it's mine and it's awesome. The stove is really strange and the shape of the cabin itself is not ordinary. The area however is great and the fishing is top-notch. Nothing like a first night in a cabin. So much to think about and so much to learn.

Congratulations Jay 👏 You guys are going to be very happy in your cabin. As soon as the hose melts if wrapped around a metal chimney. You'll be able to get it down. At least the hose. Prayer it didn't catch fire. Also invest in a foot pump for your mattresses. Looking forward to this journey you are embarking on. 🙏

Thanks for sharing your first overnighter at the cabin! Great stuff. I was concerned when you pulled on the hose to the sprinkler. Since it is wrapped around the chimney and you had a fire going, that could be trouble!
Looking forward to lots more on your new adventures.

Hi Jay. Nice to see you finally have your dream cabin. As far as your solar generator, the most efficient way (time wise) to charge it is with your Honda 2200 inverter. When your solar generator gets too low just hook up your Honda to it and charge it while still using it. About 1.5-2 hours later it’s fully charged and your set for however long it takes you to drain it again. Way faster than solar and will save you a ton of gas in the long run because your Honda won’t need to run steady. Again congrats buddy. You’re living the life.

Glad you made it through the evacuation!
First project has to be a dock, saves you from having to get wet and protects the boat in all but the worst rivet twisting weather. Use a portable winch and comealong to pull it come winter. You can build it yourself and use blue barrels as floaters (plenty of those around town). There's a guy in town who drops off fire wood to your cabin when the ice is thick enough. You should get some to stock up the cabin, you might need it if you get stuck up there. Enjoy your new get-away place.

Where I'm from if we catch a Pike we kill it. They eat all the small game fish, they are terrible fish to have in a river system or lake. If you recall which way you wrapped the hose around the stove pipe just walk it around the cabin in the opposite direction and shazam Bob's your mothers brother.

Since you have the gas generator and the jackery, you could use the jackery full time to power the cabin and charge the jackery with the generator once a day or so. That way you get the silence of the jackery and the power convenience of a gas generator.

You are going to have a awesome time with that cabin. Putting your touches for you and your family. So when it gets sub-zero cold then you become a Ice Road Trucker. Your cabin has a lot of potential and it is going to be so awesome when you are done, which will not be done for many, many years. I will be looking for the other tent site and what is going on over there. I am glad that you did not lose either site to the wildfires. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I know you are new to boating and I grew up on the bayou down in South Louisiana so just dropping some knowledge. Also life jacket… underwater obstacles can capsize a dingy like that at throw you like a bucking bull. I’ve actually had that happen at the “Jump” in the Mississippi River. I’m a great swimmer but if I hadn’t been wearing one I would be ☠

The generators you have should do you until you get solar panels set up….if you decide to go that route.
You don’t need a lot of panels since you aren’t going to be there full time, just a few to suit your needs while there.
Also, later on you could try and jackhammer a hole down into the rock that the outhouse is on. So there will be something that the waste can go into every time the outhouse is used….
Here is another suggestion for you and something I thought up to do at my own place when I get it, get a couple more of those jugs you used to haul water up from the lake to wash your dishes in.
Put them under the sinks instead of using buckets then run a hose or pipe down from the drain into the jug, this way the contents won’t splash out when the sink empties and you can just put the cover on the jug when it comes time to empty it.
