    I love it when you and swedish words into your conversation. As a Norwegian descendant and the old people have passed on, I don't get to hear the beautiful scandinavian language anymore.

    You did a great job with that, Emelie. It looks perfect. The cast iron version of this would be way to heavy for you to carry around. You made the right choice for your individual circumstances. Well done.

    Looks like it went well. The legs (feet? )of the oven are there for a reason. The oven is made so you are supposed to put it down into coals (no open flames). And you put coals on top. If you would like to try that next time, you can. Appreciate your movies. Good luck and I hope to see more cooking in the future.

    In Australia, the customary way is to place the oven on the bed of coals, rather than over a fire, and to pile more coals onto the lid. No tripod. ☆ your method seems to work well enough

      My Mississippi Grandmother's did it the same way. As she was roasting her meats over the fire "coal" or steaks on the "coals" the Dutch ovens were on the sides of & in the coals which cooked the casseroles & fruit cobblers with coals on top. Classic. A lid handle is a must & easy to make. I enjoy the crackle of the fire.

    Looks delicious. That would probably be called a "crumble" in English, because of the crust. Coals are preferable to fire, in Dutch Oven cooking, since the heat is more consistent. Also the real advantage of cast iron is that it heats and cools slower so you don't have to manage the heat as much. The cast iron evens the temperature so you don't have too. The advantage of Aluminum, of course, is the one you mentioned, weight. Depends on which you want as to which is best for you. =) Great video!

    Good for you for trying a Dutch Oven.
    The only thing I would recommend is get yourself some proper tools for it, a trivet, and a lid lifter will make a big difference in being able to handle a hot oven. And a small shovel for moving coals around.

    I think this is more a Cobbler than a Pie. We don't have blueberries where I live but plenty of blackberries. I have made blackberry cobbler in the forest, and it taste exponentially better than it does at home. The big pan wouldn't be a problem for me. I loooove pie and cobbler and could easily eat half that pan in one sitting :>

    Looks delicious, I make some desserts that way, but if I don't want to have as much clean up and still bake in my Dutch oven, I make mine in a pie pan, set a few small stones in the bottom of my Dutch oven to set the pie pan on, and do what you did. Still works as an oven, instead of cooking directly in the Dutch oven, you use it as a real oven. Works great. Enjoyed your video.

    I love the look of your pie and the only thing you need is a lid holder to put the lid on when you take it off the pot. That way you won't get trash from the ground into the pot. You have the fire set up correctly and once you get a lid holder you will love dutch oven cooking even more.

    • @TheOtherBill
      @TheOtherBill 5 лет назад

      Also a lid lifter so you don't have to remove all the coals to check during cooking.

    Our Boy Scouts use them all the time on camping trips. Typical menu items were: Pizza, dump cakes, roasts, stews cobblers and so much more!
    You will find it easier to control the temps by putting it on top of a few coals, rather than over open flames.
    I use mine at home with charcoal briquettes for a great pizza!

    Very well done Emelie . Not sure on the Aluminum Dutch oven ,but I have used the iron ones a fair bit. The iron ones need to be "cured" with oil before use. They were an often used item in droving camps and mining camps. Legs of mutton come out a treat with all the veg. We just let the wood burn down to coals place the oven directly into the coals and shovel some on the lid. Great way to cook. Damper can be mixed and poured directly into the ash od the fire covered with more ash then place coals on top. Comes out very free of dirt or ash.
