- Cefn yr Arail is a 491m hill in the South Wales Valleys. Great views, great walks and solitude in the heart of the South Wales Valleys.

If you want to say thanks for any of my content you can always buy me a coffee - I don't actually drink coffee so any money received would be spent on used camping gear and the odd can of own-brand energy drink.

Such a beautiful landscape, with wonderful views of the valley. I always enjoy some cloud cover on hikes.
Thanks. Yes, a good sky can elevate any walk. Especially when you want to take photos.
Such a beautiful place 👍
Thanks. It's a nice secluded spot for a hike.
A dry walk is a rare thing this year so far. Congratulations! And thanks for obeying my command to release a video 😉 Looks like a lovely area for an amble.
Ha ha. It was a rare day. On my previous walk I went a slightly different way and found a good spot for a wild camp next to some ponds. So I might be back...
Great walk Kev and some stunning views. The weather has been awful so I’ve barely gotten out.
As you say it’s an all year round walk, but it would be lovely to do on a summers day. Some lovely views 👌
Yeah it's been grim. Most footpaths are just swamps of mud now but this walk was great. I'd like to walk all the way to Mynydd Carn y Cefn from here one day.
Walked this little gem over the weekend (extending to Mynydd Carn-y-cefn) and I can honestly say one of the prettiest places I've walked in South Wales. Amazing views all round, rugged, isolated, a true beauty!
Great to hear you've enjoyed it. It is a great place to walk and so many routes, would be a nice walk up to Carn-y-cefn (which is also nice from Silent Valley Nature reserve.
From Cwm Big is about 20k out and return, pretty much all the way on the ridge. There's also a really nice rocky ledge by the disused tip at Tarren Y Trwyn that I recommend as a lunch spot for views from Pen Y Fan all the way to Mynydd Machen
@@TSOliveira23 thanks for the tip, literally, I'll probably do that walk at some point.
Being local to you I must admit i could not workout where you were so ill take a look at your website and hopefully ill complete the route in the next month or so.
The valleys have a lot to offer those who like to explore the outdoors, whether it be walking, cycling, kyaking etc. Your doing a great job of not only howing potential tourists but alo just a importantly the locals
Thanks. I'll get the route on the website tomorrow night hopefully. It's a good place to explore, like so much of the Valleys.
Great video Kev, looked like a really good walk.
Cheers Stu.
Cwm Big (Beeg) is somewhere I have know since I was about 6 or 7 I reckon. As you walked up through the valley you might have come across a gated enclosure... as kids we used to swim in there.. tickle trout in the river etc - great times. I have never lost touch with the place and still walk there quite often. Just at the highest point of the Arail there is signifigant land slippage - probably from the fact Roseheyworth Colliery used to have a tunnel undermeath that ran through to Cwm Marine (no 3 tunnel I got in my head but might be wrong) Glad you had such a quiet day Kev, sadly as you will have seen the ground is quite rutted in places - its an offroaders (bikes mostly) playground. I bet there was some Red Grouse hunkered down in that heather. Oh ye, Giles Farm hosts Steelhouse every year and that particular weekend is anything but quiet as music fills the hills with the sound of heavy rock..lol. A great watch as its a place I call home. atb Al
Cheers Al. Yes, lots of mining underneath and various bits of slippage. I only heard one lot of dirt bikes, but the highway of tracks goes on for miles! Soonish to be home to a wind farm as well. I fancy a wild camp up here at some point. Somewhere a bit different. I can't believe I've only recently walked this place. Driven past it for years without stopping.
Any trees to go hammock camping?
Not sure. Forestry is quite dense so probably not the best.
Seeking solitude the you do a RUclips video lol
Ha ha, yes, I see the possibility of that being contradictory. I do enjoy looking back on a walk, capturing the views and landscape. Especially in this location which will be a wind farm soon.
