Hold up... that Spock roll that crescendos around 18:10 ... one quad plays a roll, another throws in singles, and 2 of them throw in some 2-4’s. Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. That’s not supposed to work.
Hey fellas I found the Facebook post from Colin regarding the prototype snares. “We have new Yamaha snare proto types....game changer for tuning. No more air trapped in the shell.. more air holes by strainer and snare unit, they sound more like the late 80s wood shells ala BD 88, no need to mess with guts etc”
I had to watch it at x0.5 speed but that’s what it looks/sounds like slowed down. As fast as it is, it’s really hard to tell the difference between a triplet based tap 5, and a fivelet. One sixteenth note triplet space between the the next note vs having one less 16th before the next accent… but either way g.d. were they playing at such a high level
Past few years their Color Guard carried this Corps now Boston's Percussion and Brass really stepped it up this year. With the right show they have a strong shot at winning in 22.
@@agedoutpodcast More importantly they have the financial resources available and their Contributors are very excited about what's happening. with the Corps. BAC did hire some Percussion Staff from Blue Knights You must also give props to Gino and His Brass Staff. My Nephew is in the Guard .
Pretty sure that thing at 7:04 references the end of Krakus (The slurred 5's), and then that tenor tag ending is in a 2005 SCV video of them playing spanks.
They 1 trillion should’ve won the Sanford if it was a normal summer, but at this point it’s just so hard to imagine them giving it to a corps other than SCV or BD after 8 years, especially a corps relatively new to the top 6 like Boston Also those were indeed Shirley Murphies in the snare break
They’re definitely going far in the near future. I was very fortunate to see them live. I am so proud to be alumni. Zoom was an unbelievable show. Can’t wait to see what they roll out in 2022.
He knows the tradition of this drumline, this is the corps that introduced a lot of the instruments including tympani, mallet keyboards and electric keyboards in 1985
Awesome video fellas. Boston was on fire this year and I loved watching them. One thing that might have contributed to their more relaxed approach is the fact that Mike Jackson joined the team as a consultant. I am in no way affiliated with the corps, and I don’t know how involved his role was, but I would imagine he had something to do with it. The opening book chunk also sounds similar to BK 2017 show beats with the broken up offbeat triplet partial pattern. Coincidence? Maybe. Anyway, that’s my .02. Looking forward to the next video!
craziest thing about the spock roll crescendo at 17:33 is that they're playing different things. Left and right of center are doing RrLlll's , center is doing the singles to doubles, and right side is doing the roll check.
This (and every other) drum and hornline would be in MID JULY if this was a normal season. To me, to think that if this was a “normal season” that they would have just about 3-4 more weeks left, is insane….
Awesome reaction guys! I love this channel. In terms of the more relaxed approach for anyone curious, it’s always been the philosophy honestly. But I’d say it’s a culmination of the consistency in instruction settling in and the individual players ability to take in that instruction and embody that approach and take it to life, exactly how you guys said it. In 2017 and 18, the players for sure had to get used to a new approach which I commend them for pulling off, especially for those who have been in the program already and had to essentially retrain how they would approach the instruments. But over time, it really settled in as new players came in and likely didn’t have to break down what they knew for so long and build back up. I’d also say the section leaders largely influenced the approach both stylistically and just fundamentally. The center here always had a very natural relaxed approach and it really rubbed off. His hands are a great expression and example of the teaching philosophy. As you guys said in previous videos, all the buzz words like soft hands etc. Colin’s baseline of instruction is always “rebound” or “bounce” and they train and teach from that baseline and build up from there. Hopefully that makes sense! I know a lot of folks had interpreted previous programs output as aggressive and pounding but it was definitely the opposite (at least tried to be lol), perhaps just a visual interpretation of how the style comes across, I.e high velocity, visually aggressive etc having been on the Cadets side as a member and then transitioning briefly to Boston staff myself! It’s awesome seeing those teachings come through. Of course every group is different as well, Individual skill set and all the other variables also like you said in the video! People like to ask about the approach so hopefully this gives anyone wondering a fair understanding haha. Great content again guys🤙🏼
From what I understand, Boston had decently early-ish move-ins and had a very in-depth off-season program. Good for them. Also you mentioned dynamic contrast. I think that might be the little bit of Mike Jackson and Kevin Shah influence (broken city).
Is it fair to say BAC 2021 have stolen the Darkhorse title from mid 90s Crossmen? Damn I just aged myself. BAC brought all the beef and I'm here for it.
BREAKING NEWS: BAC wins the Aged Out Podcast “Fred Sanford Award” for outstanding percussion.
Boston 100% won the 2021 Sanford in my heart. GOOD GAWD
And it’s not even thaaaat close lol

Yea. Another example of the shenanigans they pulled off 😂
Yea whoever wrote that is dumb
@@Gootz2210 y’all were fire dude
@@Gootz2210 quick question. In the Spanks tag, did you guys include some Fast Things by Brian Perez? I swear i've heard some of that before.
@@Gootz2210 bro that’s so fun to just watch. I can’t even imagine nailing that every time must feel great!!

"Mike McIntosh just texted me" subtle flex haha 💪
"I don't care what your pit did..."
Story of our lives. 😆😆😆
#pitlivesmatter
I like how Evan just casually gets texts from one of the most legendary percussion educators/writers in dci
Slurred 5’s on those rolls haha RllrrLrrll
Yea it’s the tag from Krackus.
Called it!

Agreed. They’ve been doing all the right things the past few seasons. I think a gold medal and a drum trophy could easily happen soon.

Yea. SCV and BD would have been in the conversation but if Boston was this good with this little time imagine where they’d be with another 6 weeks 😳
The roll figure in the tenors discussed at 6:55 seems a reference to Krackus (SCV 2003)
They’re definitely going far in the near future. I was very fortunate to see them live. I am so proud to be alumni. Zoom was an unbelievable show. Can’t wait to see what they roll out in 2022.
Watching from the future. OOOOH lemme tell you 🥶
Yup, snares had prototype drums
Nice! Well they sound great lol
Prototype can I read about this cause now i'm curious.
The “Shirley Murphys” during the snare break was the same sticking but in a ninelet. Hella fun to play
So glad to see the quads continuing to utilize mallets.
The dynamics, the writing, the chops, the clarity, you name it, clean! Enjoyable to watch. Jaw dropping performance!
Agreed! Great playing never goes out of style!
7:20 "Either way, it's fast as hell and clean as shit"
My snare tech is the bald guy on snare line and my high schools percussion tech is Alex Beltran😁
Nice!
so in other words we should see you in the line in a couple years? :)
He knows the tradition of this drumline, this is the corps that introduced a lot of the instruments including tympani, mallet keyboards and electric keyboards in 1985
Lol those are slurred tap 5’s rolls. The rolls you inquired about at the beginning

@@agedoutpodcast Sounds like McIntosh is ready to go for the next one! *Hyped*
Mike jackson actually didn’t do anything with us this year
Mike Jackson was only possibly on staff for 20, not 21. The members never saw Mike Jackson throughout the season, he had no influence
*Shots fired* Did you guys just ask who Star '93'd better? Congratulations BAC for winning the inaugural AOP High Battery Award!
Will BAC rise to dethrone SCV? Stay tuned.

Yea. My mind was blown when I realized this -Mike
Colin marched in this organization in mid to late eighties now he is teaching this line, he marched as a tenor drums
10/10 tap 5’s
From a Boston MELLOPHONE vet (2014 and 2017) this was amazing to watch.
The quad figure that starts at 7:10 seems to be figures of 5s Rllrr Lrrll Rllrr Lrrll
They just play it fast and so clean that is seems extra crazy.
They are definitely tap 5’s😂

15:52, same
lol
First sign that you need more morning coffee: My brain read "Aged Out Rejects" 🤣
17:34 the switch between doubles and singles was only done by the one tenor one in from the left
Yea it was a split thing. One guy was throwing 4s in there.
@@agedoutpodcast jesus i didnt see that 🔥🔥
I think the 5’s maybe a nod to another guessick lick from Krackus, they could be 5let rolls?
This. I'm pretty sure those were RLLRR LRRLL 5lets, which is the part from Krakus if I'm not mistaken.
From what I understand, Boston had decently early-ish move-ins and had a very in-depth off-season program. Good for them. Also you mentioned dynamic contrast. I think that might be the little bit of Mike Jackson and Kevin Shah influence (broken city).

Yes! Get him on there!
Boston ‘91: Nick Angelis, Rudy Gowern on snare, Brian Tinkel on bass, Colin on quints.
Boston ‘90 & ‘91 had some talent
100% either tap 5s or slurred 5let Rllrr Lrrll
Ahh yea could be the slurred 5lets. Yup hear it now -Mike
It is slurred 5’s
I mean I can forgive the uniforms, because to me, it looks like it was suppose to be a “race car pit crew” look in align with their show
Nick Angelis on the podcast 1 day?
The quads have so much beef i love it. They have the 8 inch spock and 10 12 13 14 drums. The tuning is just so AHHHHH.
Yup. Absolutely loved the quad tuning.
