    At the age of 59, when needing a new wardrobe because of major weight loss, I decided to change my style, too. For about 20 years I had been forcing myself into the Boho style favored where I live; the items were often beautiful, but never really felt like the true me. So, I decided to return to the all-classic, ranging from preppy to elegant, style that I had loved in the first half of my life, using mostly new, recently-made items (I had little luck with secondhand offerings). Two years later, I feel so much happier now that I know it was the right change for me. My only disappointment is that clothes are such low-quality now, but they are much cheaper, too, which helped me build a new wardrobe on a budget. My dream is to find blazers and coats that don’t have polyester linings, but in two years, I haven’t found even one.

      That's so great that you were able to find your style after 20 years of feeling not like yourself. I hope you can find the blazer and coat that you are looking for soon!

      The Curated has blazers with a silk lining. They are definitely an investment but good quality always is!

    I think you grasp that people’s personal style is important. What do you actually wear vs what you think you’re supposed* to wear. For example, a lot of people making videos about a capsule wardrobe say “you have to have a nude pointed toe stiletto; it goes with everything!” Sure they look great in photos, but it’s not my style at all and I wouldn’t actually wear them.

    • @ValKovalchuk
      @ValKovalchuk  3 года назад +1

      Yes, that is exactly right! Making a wardrobe that WE actually want to wear is only way to create a closet that we love and are finally satisfied with. 😊😊

    Just found your channel and I’m so happy I did, I love your content.
    Fashion has always baffled me, for most of my life I would buy pieces that I thought we’re pretty but would end up not knowing how to build an outfit with them, I didn’t know what my style was, funny thing is I’ve always called my style plain Jane.
    About 5 years ago I decided to make a change and put the effort into figuring out it all out and with the help of RUclips and channels like yours, I discovered that I love classic styles, and what I was doing wrong is, I was buying clothes for a fantasy self and did not have enough basic pieces.
    Today I have built my work wardrobe to something I really enjoy(I wear mostly dress pants and blazers), however I’m still struggling with casual clothes. Which is why I’m glad I found your channel. Thank you for sharing what you know.

    Also, brands rotate in and out of style, so sometimes we just have to wait to get what works. After many years of not finding anything in browns or cool pinks (those 15/years of peachy, orangey “blush” were a pain), my patience was rewarded when they came back “on trend” and I could get several items from my wishlist in these colors. For two years I couldn’t find cool neutrals to suit my coloring, everything was warm-toned beiges and camels. This spring, taupe came back in, and I was able to get what I wanted in this cooler neutral. Now I really want some navy pieces, but my regular brands, like H&M, never has anything in this color.

      You are so right... I am waiting to find navy pieces too and low rise jeans. Can't stand high rise jeans, but that's what's on trend right now. It takes so much patience even if you have figured out your style, more or less, but can't find the pieces you want.

      Shop different stores. When I was much younger, Montgomery Wards had greens and browns, every other store had navy and black. Different buyers may favor different color pallette. Agree that quality has vastly deteriated. That's one reason to shop thrift stores. TFS

    Two things that will not change and that need to be taken into consideration, WHATEVER THE CURRENT TREND. Your appropriate color palate, and your body shape. I FINALLY figured out my color palate -- I am a fall, a warm fall, who will NEVER look good in bright red or emerald green or hot pink. So even if those colors are trendy, I should stay away from them. Secondly, and I came to this later, was figuring out my body shape. I used to think I was a pear but have now decided I am somewhere between a pear and a rectangle. Basically, I have very little waist, I just go up and down. So I love the new trend of padded shoulders, so long as they are not too extreme. Even when that trend goes out, I will continue to wear slightly padded shoulders as that will make my waist seem comparatively narrow (compared to my shoulders.) Another thing I learned about myself is that in the end I favor more casual, flowing looks, and NO RUFFLES or ultra feminine touches. (I call ruffles the milkmaid look and it's just not me!) So those are considerations in making my clothes decisions and I feel that at my age (I am sixty +) I have finally figured it out. There are some trends that come in and that work for me and I embrace them, but those that don't, based on the "givens" above, I don't adopt.

    Interesting tip not to declutter first🤔. That’s what I tend to do, but just like you said, if you don’t figure out your personal style, you tend to buy the same things that you don’t love or wear often and up with a cluttered closet again. Thank you for the detailed tips!

    Hi Val! I’m so happy I found your channel, and I’m going to try this! I have so many nice church clothes, but I feel like I have nothing to wear because I’m at home with my kids most of the time. I end up wearing the same old sweats all the time. I really need to work on my home wardrobe, but it’s hard because I’m actually really picky about it. It has to be comfy and I have to be willing to wear it around the house which is hard when I buy something new.

    It sucks that brands are pushing low-rise jeans again, to make women feel they are out of style in their high-rise ones. They just want to make us continually buy, buy, buy. I recently decided I’m not buying anymore denim, after 50 years of hating it. Yes, jeans are chic and flattering, everyone wears them but I just can’t stand their discomfort. I’m only buying what really works for me nowadays.

      What's really crazy is that most women look awful in low rise jeans! Even slenderish women usually have a bit of a muffin top. Especially with the pandemic. High rise jeans are so much more flattering.

    What about when I love many of these looks you show on Pinterest, but so many of them look great on these women, but don’t look good on my body type. I think broad shoulders like I have cannot do so many of these looks…so I’m stumped and really bummed I don’t get to wear all the looks I love. Not sure what to do. I buy and return almost everything because of this.

    • @ValKovalchuk
      @ValKovalchuk  2 года назад +2

      I agree, that can be really frustrating Amy... I think it's definitely a process of accepting our body shape/type the way that it is and learning how to style our clothes in a way that still makes us feel good. I have a video on my channel about how to dress for your body type, but still wear whatever you want. It may be helpful if you check it out!

    • @serenakoleno9338
      @serenakoleno9338 2 года назад

      Maybe try on a variety of different styles and see which ones flatter. What Not to Wear is a good book. Or if something you already own looks good on you, determine why and buy similar style clothing.
