You are my favorite gear reviewer..... and i just bought a savage 120 mkii...... always wondered what you'd think of it. This is the best Thanksgiving gift ever!!
Hey man! So I randomly found this video last night as I've been doing a lot of research on this amp lately. I used to have an ENGL rack setup years ago and have been itching to get back into tubes again. Anyway, just wanted to say great playing and thanks for making this video. There's not too many ENGL dealers in my country so it's great to hear some well recorded tones and riffs prior to making a huge purchase like that. Also, I had never heard Cyhra until now and you've got a new fan for sure! Cheers \m/
My favorite sound for the lead channel is contour on but dial the mids back with the eq. This way there are a little more upper mids and it sits really nicely in a mix. Better than my 5150. give it a try if you still have it around.
The hi balance knob only comes into play when you engage the rough/smooth switch. Then it can control the high end cut. I actually really like crunch I on this amp... Not many are showing it, but with high sensitivity and the right boost it's an amazing metal distortion. It's not over the top with the gain and less modern than the lead, but it's great. Thanks for the demo!
RUclips is somewhat dead today in the US (Thanksgiving), Euge saving us with an upload! Thanks man for the video. Any update on your work with Cyhra? Is still going? Excited to hear more work from you with them.
"As of 2022, the number of RUclips users in the US hovers around 200 million. This is an increase from prior years, and the number is expected to grow."
Great playing! Would be interested to hear you test ENGL Retro Tube 50w/100w and see what you think about it. I've had different ENGL's over the years and Retro (for me at least) is the best one that I've owned and played. The E653 Artist Edition sounded really good to my ears from your test video (haven't had the pleasure to play with it myself) and that most likely will be the next comrade to add beside the Retro🤘. Thank you for the great videos! Keep them coming!🤘
I agree with you about simplicity. I've owned and tried many of the Engl line. The Savage Mk1 was my main amp for a couple years, and I ended up moving it for an artist edition because I like simplicity the best. Definitely want to try the Inferno out! 💪
Hey Euge, where did you get that Tectake chair? I tried to find it on Google but no luck. It reminds me of my Secret Labs but I really want (need) a chair with flip up arm rests!
Yeah, Euge, you have really like 5150) Like a kid at x-mas night with a bag of candies)))) Maybe you will do another video with 5150 and with making sound of... idk, something like "classic northern /classic scandinavian" tone... like... Amon Amarth?) Thank you for great videos! Long Live for Metal!)
The high gain really digs in well! Also, I got the sonarworks SoundId and fixed the bass cancellation in my room! 10db at 80-110 Hz! Couldn't believe it was that bad. Thanks once again man.
Another great review! All these amps sound so similar to me, because it's your setup, your playing, and how you dial them in. So many great choices for metal guitar players these days. Just decide on the features you need, and go shopping. The difference really comes down to the player now. I don't notice amp differences as much as I notice if a player is really good or not. You sound killer on your 800 rig, just like Leon Todd sounds killer on his Fractal rig! Because both of you guys are amazing players. I have also heard some other players on RUclips who play through lots of very expensive amps, and they sound like crap, because the player is not that good. It took me years to understand this, but I was glad when I finally did. It saved me a lot of money on gear purchases I did NOT make over the years! Hehehe!
Good review. I thought you liked the Engl Fireball the most? You said it was similar to your 800? I've been thinking getting a Savage but I already have a Mark V so I am happy you did this review. I know a lot of guys like the extra saturation of the Engl over the Mark V, but I do like the Mark V. It does so much. :)
The 120 watt version and the 60 watt are pretty much incomparable, the 120 has different tubes and obviously a lot more headroom and punch to it. Same goes for the artist edition, the 100 watt is a different animal. Neverthless your demo/reviews are a breath of fresh air and really genuine, really cool to watch, Tenx🤟😎
It’s been a while since I tried the Blackmore so can’t remember anymore but if I remember correct I wasn’t that impressed about the Blackmore. If something this is a bit more versatile I think 😎. But that’s just me and I don’t obviously know your preferences and how it amplifies your sound.
Hello! tell please, how we can compare Savage 60/120 to Artist edition 100w? can Artist be also sounds good for metal Savage? Im playing Amon Amarth songs mostly (Standart B tuning)
The crunch2 channel's gain is less than the crunch1 channel on my Savage2. It doesn't sound saturated, even if I crack it to the max. Is my preamp tube broken?
What up Euge! Noticed the Zuul resides on your pedal board. Do you not use it in the fx loop? Maybe because you use multiple amps? Think Ampete has a multi amp fx loop switcher. You should contact them and see if they could hook you up then you can have the Zuul in every amp’s fx loop and any other fx you would like shared amongst all your switched amp’s loops. Keep up the vids!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
I have gate always in front of the amp just to get rid of the hiss from pedals. No need in the loop since I don’t use that much gain so the amps are quiet and my old Marshalls doesn’t even have a loop 😎👌.
It’s my old Fryette (the company was called VHT when I got it) Fat Bottom I’ve had about 15 years and used it on several tours & recordings. It rocks so it’s called ’RAWK’ 😊.
I owned the fireball before it sounds wonderfully scooped and compressed but its very distinct so it didn't blend as well playing over cover tunes like a marshall or mesa would. They are fun amps but definitely one trick pony for me. Some of their other models have more versatility though. Still wouldnt take it over a bad boy. Engl amps also really compliment their own cabinets compared to some other amps
Egue you gotta check out that Wangs 2204 hw head....hand wired jcm 800 copy from China. Supposed to be an awesome amp head under a grand. Id love to see what you do with that one!
Boogie and Peavey to me sounds much better than Savage. Savage is sterile, smooth..... and doesn't have that in your face sound as JCM 800, Mark V, Peavey. To me Fireball sounds much better than this Savage. Great comparison as always!
Actually I'm in the opposed side 😜 I like the 5150 so Much more than any high gain amp 😅, but no matter what setting and what amp you use you always sound great and Professional, I loved the mid boost Advice to cut through the mix , thank you so much for your tips , Advices and everything 🙏.
Same, i think the 5150 and the 6505 are the ultimate meta amp. I’m thinking death metal/modern death metal sound. But to be honest, it’s the sound I grew up with, I came of age in the mid 2000’s and everyone was using some incarnation of the 5150.
Great playing as usual. These Engl amps sound good, but kind of vanilla high gain to me, but several brands of high gain amp are like that. Marshall, Fender, Vox, Orange, and Hiwatt have an instantly recognisable character. I could not pick a Engl out in a mix. I'd just be guessing. I wonder why high gain kind of homogenizes things? Maybe it is just what happens when these companies do their versions of high gain preamps etc (most are just using their tweaked versions of classic Marshall circuits and the common high gain mods to saturate and tighten them up etc, e.g. Soldano and Friedman etc -- Mesa has Fender roots). P.S. I think similar about PRS. I usually know a Strat, Tele, or a Les Paul when I hear them. Less so when used with high gain though. But what does a PRS sound like? I could not tell you it is a PRS by ear. Maybe my ears are sh!t lol.
Thanks! I hear you and it’s pretty much like that. At least the way I see / hear it (like you😎). But to me all ENGLs I’ve tried has kind of a unique character and to be honest I prefer the character of Marshalls more. And a few others. My favourite ENGL so far has been the Marty Friedman but that’s pretty much like a hot rodded JCM800 to me so there you go 😁.
A good sounding amp. They are very solid in their capacity for thick tube tones. I will never own one I think because I will probably stay using Fractal Audio modeling processors from now on though. I would enjoy seeing you do a Driftwood amp review Euge, if you know anyone with one. Those are such beautiful amps in look and tone.
I really liked the tone of this amp, what a great demo!
Thanks man!
I picked up a savage 120Mk II about 6 months ago. great amp! the 60 sounds great too! awesome riffage as always!
Cool! Thanks man!

Really good tone from that ENGL. That Contour button really wakes it up. The song ripped!! Have a good day Euge 🤘🤘
Thanks man & likewise!
One of the more informative reviews of the Savage. And I appreciate the comparison to the Mesa which is a good reference point for me.
Glad to hear thanks!
Brings back memories of 99. We used it on the first Sinergy album.
Oh yeah! Great album! Like the others too 👌🤟.

Crunch 1 just doesn’t have that enough gain for me to be used as rhythm even with gain fully cranked. Do you use an overdrive to get the extra gain?
@@amitdey6245 don't know how much gain you need. It has a lot of gain... Yes, I boost it with a precision drive, but mainly to tighten the low end.

Thanks!

I know this is an old video but i think youd like the Engl E530 preamp. I think the Engl rack stuff is tighter and more in your face.

Nice sounds coming from that amp. So many out there to try. Randall Satan and Framus Cobra are two I’d like to see you dial in with your magic.
Indeed. Hopefully some day! 😎
Along with the great playing these amp videos are a hell of a good advertisement for that IR, sounds great
