    Who do you think The Goddess of the Sand is?

    • @GigalassII
      @GigalassII Месяц назад +6

      Genuinely? I think there were other gods before Hylia, either that or she wasn't alone, until she made it so.
      I think Hylia slaughtered the other gods that have been either outright mentioned or vaguely referenced on the sidelines to make way for her own perfect world, then the 3 Golden Goddeses restored order and forced Hylia into a mortal form for her crimes.
      Hylia let Demise start the cycle so she could forever be reborn and have some element of control over the world she created, in one way or another.

      You gave some compelling arguments for it to be Nayru, and maybe it was originally meant to be Nayru.
      But using Skyward Sword to support your arguments and drawing a connection to Time makes me think it might now be Hylia.
      Ever since Skyward Sword, I have viewed Hylia as being the Goddess of Time more so than Nayru. In Skyward Sword Fi delivers numerous messages to Link, which are eventually reviled to be from Hylia herself. In most of those messages Hylia mentions that she is guiding him from "the edge of time." For Hylia to be on the edge of time she must be able to step outside of it, she must be able to control it. That itself is is a clear indication that time is Hylia's domain, and add to that the fact that it has always been a Zelda, Hylia's desendent, that have been the Sage of Time (OOT, TotK) and I think there is a strong case that Hylia is the Goddess of Time.
      That said, I think there are different tiers of gods in LoZ, at least two. The Golden Goddesses would be the highest level of gods, you could call them multiversal gods or true gods, beings capable of making entire realities and objects so powerful that even lesser gods fight over them. Next level down would be gods like Hylia and Demise (even if you don't want to label him as a god he was on an equivalent power level), universal gods. They are beings of immense power, but ones constrained to one or few realities, and capable of being surmounted. If you want to stretch it you could also count strong spirits like Jabu-Jabu, the Great Deku Tree, and Valoo as something like regional gods. Though from my limited understanding of Japanese mythology the line between god and spirit is blurry, so it might not be a huge stretch.
      Anyway, that is a long way of saying that the Goddess of the Sand could still be Nayru, as I see it all things are within the domain of the Golden Goddesses, even if Hylia is Goddess of Time.

    I really like where you guys are going for in this video analysis! how Kotake and Koume used the statue as way to fool the Gerudo tribe in being their blinded servants loyal to their cause. And these old hags have been doing this for four centuries.
    I can see bits of a Buddhist origin and ancient Egypt (The Wing sun of Thebes) through the the statue of the Goddess of the Sand as Adult Link
    But the cobra snake that’s on top of the Goddess’s head, the murals, and the shrine’s fort entrances kinda fits for a independent Gerudo like Nabooru is to bring renewal to her tribe as the Sage of Spirit. When comparing this to ancient Greece, Egypt, indigenous North America, snakes symbolize as fertility, rebirth, renewal and even immortality.
    Nintendo really has a habit of taking inspiration from our world history and culture to make Hyrule what it is back then and in recent Zelda games today.

    • @elio7610

      It is much simpler than that. The Moon's light is the Sun's light; it reflects the Sun's rays like a mirror. The Moon acts as a mirror, not just symbolically but physically. A symbol of the Moon can represent a mirror.
      The game already states that the "dark" counterpart to Hylians is the Sheikah, so that role is already taken. I do wonder if the Gerudo and Sheikah were connected or even the same thing earlier in OoT's development, there seems to be some evidence to suggest so, but the finalized game seems to keep them separate and I have not noticed any lore since that hints at any such connection.

It seems to be more likely that it's just in a different part of the Gerudo Desert (the geographical features of which changing is just a handwavium to show places you're not interested in visiting/don't need to go to). You could even fold some of TOTK lore backwards and across incarnations to make the assumption that the Gerudo were chosen to operate and maintain a prison, appointed by an ancient king as their duty to the royal family, and that prison is the Arbiter's Grounds. But in both Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild Lanayru is a distinct and mostly water-themed region. It's possible that the name Lanayru was simply migrated to a new region (maybe due to the spirit Lanayru moving), but it also seems plausible that the desert became rehydrated to form the later Lanayru region and that the Gerudo desert formed independently. (Though another possibility is that only *part* of the Lanayru desert became rehydrated, and it essentially split into Gerudo desert and the lush Lanayru region).

    My theory is that in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the Spirit Temple may be Gerudo Town. If you overlay the map of OoT on BotW, then the Gerudo Canyon quarry may be the remains of Gerudo Fortress, the waterfall near Digdog Bridge may be the waterfall in OoT Link crosses on Epona when the bridge is torn down, and then the first outcrop that is in OoT the Spirit Temple must be Gerudo Town. And Gerudo Town looks like it was hewn out of a rock, judging from the walls and the water emitting pillar in the palace. Could it be that Spirit Temple, which was also built inside a rock, was destroyed, trying to delete all memories of the Goddess of the Sand or simply using the stones as material for a new temple (the new Spirit Temple pyramid of TotK), just like they did in ancient Egypt with certain gods or pharaos, and that Gerudo Town was built inside its ruins? The overall lay-out is similar, with a central entrance and a left side and right side. It may be a bit far-fetched, but the right side of Gerudo Town seems to be the adult side, because of the noble canteen, the spicy massage at the inn, the love academy and the military training camp, while the left side is quite safe with the goddess statue, Patricia and stuffed animals. Then in the back there is the interior goddess of the sands, which contains the bossroom, which would be Riju's bedroom. I know, I doesn't match up perfectly and the theory is not strongly supported, but I thought it interesting to share it anyway.

    There is apparently a pre-release build that has text explicitly stating this statue to be the goddess Din, according to the TCRF website. I know this may not be canon, the text was changed to make it ambiguous, but it seems like an important note for anyone looking for answers. It is also interesting that this goddess is described as "wicked" or "evil" in the Japanese text, especially if it really is one of the three golden goddesses.

    • @alexxliindholm9577
      @alexxliindholm9577 Месяц назад

      Well maybe the wicked and evil part is what she is seen as by the Hylians? Like they drag her name through the dirt (Pun not intended) through the ages since they was in a war against the Gerudo, and clearly hates them? Like they take their version of Din and say it is a wicked and evil goddess, maybe it was the Hylians who gave her the title of "Goddess of the sands" to erase the connection to the golden goddesses, making the Gerudo seem like savages who doesn't worship the "true goddesses". So in OoT, her real identity has been forgotten and that is why the Gerudo call her "Goddess of the sands" as well. Just an idea I have had for years now.

      @yum2735 Месяц назад

      Technically, in the Japanese version the name was never changed. It was "Giant Statue of the Evil God[dess]" in both the pre-release and final versions of the game. "Statue of the God[dess] Din" was actually the name of the dungeon which is now known as the Spirit Temple. The other Adult Link temples had their final names ending in "temple" at this stage of development, so I think "Statue of the God[dess] Din" was actually a Child Link dungeon, probably just a different name for the Child Link section of the spirit temple. This would mean that the name wasn't changed to make the Din association ambiguous but simply because they made both sections/dungeons the "Spirit Temple." I think the "evil" part refers to the statue's evil-looking face. In general, I think the known "names" of the goddess like "a goddess of the sand" or "desert goddess" are just cryptic descriptions of the location. There's also a prayer to Din written in Gerudo text in the pre-release version, so she absolutely has benevolent qualities.

    The early script in OoT's 97 Spaceworld overdump says its Evil Goddess Din. Tho that script also says The Sages are Rauru's brothers (earlier in dev they were literal depiction of the 7 Wisemen in ALttP, yet only Rauru kept that design). So hard to say why Nintendo backed out of making that association, but it would explain Nayrus protection against the Evil Goddess!

      @@leosnyder5264 That's the oracle Din, not the goddess Din (though going by Din's statue in Wind Waker they even look similar). The Desert Collossus area is called "Giant Statue of the Evil God[dess]" in the Japanese version even in the final product. But the actual dungeon was renamed from "Statue of the Evil God[dess] Din" to "Spirit Temple" later in development. The other adult Link dungeons had their final names at this point, so it was possibly seen as a child Link dungeon at this point in development and changed to "Spirit Temple" when they added the adult Link sections of the dungeon. "Giant Statue of the Evil Goddess" (Navi mentions the evil face), "goddess of the Sand" and "Desert Goddess" are all really just descriptions of the desert colossus location, I don't think any of them are meant to represent the actual goddess. So, I wouldn't read too much into the "evil" part, Din is associated with power and the Gerudo are warriors. There's also Gerudo text from the same stage of development which contains a prayer to Din, asking her for protection, so she's clearly also a protection goddess. That being said, in the 1997 story Nayru actually had talked to Zelda in her dreams, so there's a chance that Din was also meant to have a more direct involvement in the story at this stage.

      @@yum2735 Interesting, seems like Link, Zelda and Ganondorf each had a Goddess closely connected to their backstory. (Farore and Wind, Forest Temple in Kokiri Forest once being Wind Temple, etc).
      You know, I wonder if this idea had any connection with the Triforce Splitting plot-twist, as fans going into OoT knew Ganondorf would get the Triforce, as it was ALttP's backstory. Yet that little plot twist, even if unintentionally, is the reason why Wind Waker became the new sequel to OoT (since Ganon didn't have entire Triforce when sealed like ALttP when trying to break free) and the Downfall timeline (Link being defeated) reversed the effects of OoT's story twist to revert the story back to its original timeline.
      I've wondered about these things since Oot launched. Lol Cool to finally have these new insights into Oot's development!
