I wore the Nighthawk on active military operations for years and years. It served me very well. I finally gave it to my son when I simply could not read the dials any longer (eyes start to go after 40!). I told my son that the only jewelry that most men wear is a watch, so wear a good one. He took it and had the crystal replaced as it had served a hard life. He still wears it to this day and he tells me he gets complimented on it daily. Kind regards,

I own both and as a pilot, the Knighthawk is my go-to watch for flying. Having the Citizen's dual time for the Zulu time checks is invaluable especially for flight plans and aviation weather briefings. The Flightmaster is a smart looking watch but the reflections from the domed hardlex and smaller face on the Seiko make it less useful for making instant time checks. For some reason, the Seiko impresses the ladies more than the Citizen, so it is the timepiece I take to aviation events and airshows.

For my 10th anniversary at my job in Aerospace (UTC) I allocated myself 2k for a watch. After two weeks of considering what watch is most appropriate I purchased a NightHawk and put the remaining funds back into savings.

    TGV,
I am not really into watches very much, but for some reason I hang on your every video lol. I do like how you are as enthusiastic about $50 watches as $5,000 watches. I especially enjoy your ramblings about non-watch things. Thanks for educating/entertaining me for hours.

Really appreciate the inner rotating bezel of the nighthawk. It also has a slight chamfer to it, that works well transitioning to the face of the watch. The Citizen appears less busy, and a little better thought out, even evident with the faces in the dark.

@Nick Post. How is it that your Citizen Nighthawk Pilot's watch is only accurate to + 30 seconds per month ( or + 31 seconds per month in the case of a month that is 31 days long)? My Citizen Nighthawk BJ7019-62E watch is accurate to + 9--9.5 seconds per month.

@@nico-zh4eo . Incredibly, I misread Nick Post's comment about the timekeeping accuracy of his Citizen Nighthawk watch. But it is very unlikely, almost exceedingly unlikely, that any Nighthawk watch is accurate to +/- 0.1 seconds ( i.e., 1/10 of a second) per day because radio-control watches are inaccurate by a half second (0.5 seconds) just before receiving the automatic time calibration signal every 24 hours. If his Nighthawk watch was actually accurate to +/- 0.1 seconds per day, that would mean that it is only inaccurate by +/- 3 seconds per month ( or 3.1 seconds per month in a 31-day month). and there is no way any Citizen Nighthawk watch is that accurate in timekeeping accuracy! My Citizen BJ7019-62E Nighthawk watch is accurate to + 9-9.5 seconds per month, the last time I calculated its' timekeeping accuracy. I am currently checking its' timekeeping accuracy again just verify to my first calculation.

    • @MrSlurry
      @MrSlurry 2 года назад

@@michaelbarlow6610 my Nighthawk is accurate to +0.1 seconds per day. I measured it from the 13 Mar to 30th Apr '21 and it gained 1.7 seconds in total. These eco-drive movements have a reputation for being extremely accurate.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 2 года назад

@@MrSlurry . You must have an exceedingly unusual Nighthawk watch that has that kind of phenomenal timekeeping accuracy because non- radio-control, non-GPS quartz watches are accurate to +/- 15 seconds per month and the overwhelming majority of non-radio-controlled, non-GPS quartz watches cannot achieve an accuracy of +/-3 seconds per month (which would be a freakishly accurate +/-36 seconds per year)! I'm going to check my Citizen Nighthawk BJ7005-59E watch on March 28, 2022 to see what its' accuracy is since it was in perfect synchronization on February 28th with my radio-control Citizen CB0025-56E watch. By the way, "Eco-Drive" does not refer to a Citizen watch's movement. It refers to the solar cells below the watch dial that utilize light (sunlight or artificial light) to charge the watch's capacitor to power the watch movement and features.

After not wearing a watch for almost 20 years, about a year ago my obsession was reborn with the purchase of two watches that I blame for that rebirth...one of them being the all black steel Nighthawk (BJ7019-62E). That was June 2016 and less than a year later I've added about a dozen more watches ranging from less expensive watches with odd designs to an elegant Seamaster AquaTerra, but my Nighthawk is my go-to daily watch. My friends are only half-joking when they mention staging an intervention.
I know I'm late to the game on this video, but I just found your channel recently and am making my way through your back episodes. Thank you for not being the typical watch snob! I love that you appreciate quality and heritage at every price point. Doesn't hurt that your tastes are similar to mine. Keep up the great work!

I have both the Citizen Nighthawk Blue Angels(much cooler than the black/red dial) and the Flighty(black sna-411 and the white/blue sna-413 version). The Citizen is easier to read, has better lume, has the gmt hand, is solar powered eco-drive, and has that great bracelet with the wing cross section links. A great, cool watch, and by all stats, the better watch. If I had to make a choice of one watch to keep? I’d have to go with…. The Flighty! It’s comfortable wear, layout, cool slide rule bezel( although it’s impossible to read without a magnifying glass). When you look at it, the symmetry of the lumed round indices, the multiple complications, the alarm, the perfect color choice of the yellow second and minute hands, the hypnotic, soothing effect of the second hand reset, and the split polished bracelet links, and that beautiful domed crystal all contribute to that incredible X-factor that leaves the decision to your gut, rather than your brain! TGV, I completely understand your love affair with the Flighty. I’d never part with my Flighty, never, ever, I just won’t do it!

  • @parsedout2576

Had both, ended up flipping the SNA411 and keeping the Nighthawk. The bracelet on the NIghthawk is miles ahead of the Seiko. The Eco Drive is a huge plus. All dial makes it wear bigger. Angular case design is more interesting. Finally with my domed sapphire installed I just couldn't justify keeping both and the Citizen came out ahead in my watch box.

Corned_Lemon Yes it's the Yobokies. Very slight dome, blue AR and it still rides above the bezel, but being sapphire that's kind of preferred in my opinion. Haven't tested the WR but I rarely take my watches deeper than the bathtub while bathing my little ones so I'm probably not a good test subject.

I would choose the Nighthawk any day! Being an Eco-Drive it has that plus thing which separates it from normal quartz watches. And changing the battery isn't so complicated and a stop at an authorized watch repair shop once in 15-20 years isn't so bothering as is changing the battery every 2 years.

  • @deltormedici

I would have to disagree with your X-Factor marking. In fact, for the exact reasons you rated the Seiko higher, I would rate the Citizen higher. Because it is it's own thing instead of trying to be something that its not I would definitley give the edge to the Night Hawk.
    Great video as always, Tristano!

As a pilot I am buying the Flightmaster as my 100 subscriber reward. I did not choose the nighthawk because it doesn’t have a chronograph. We need a stop watch for timing in an emergency a rate one 180 degree turn to get us out of trouble. We also use a stopwatch for establishing field length on a precautionary landing and of course for basic land navigation. I am using a Casio G-Shock M5610, but I am going to see how the Flighty stands up. I will probably change the crystal for an anti glare sapphire. Thanks for doing this comparison.

i am proud owner of flightmaster snab67 for more then 10 years now, sna411 didnt make into the finals of deciding witch watch to buy, but nighthawk did and i can say that nighthawk is the iconic masterpiece. i do not regret choosing snab67 over nighthawk, but after a decade, nighthawk is still looking fresh and fantastic with its "hexad-ish" bracelet and it is probably the best and most original watch of that category, and it is not under 200 dolars, its price is double that

Have been wearing the Flightmaster for a few weeks now. The slide rule feature gets used constantly. I even obtained a Post Versalog slide rule circa 1951 just to sharpen my slide rule skills.
Visually I am drawn to the Nighthawk as its dial is not so congested. Citizen gets another up with the Eco-Drive movement compared with the aging 7T62 movement w/399 battery. I now have 2 watches that use this cell. Citizen gets a down with no duel time and chrono feature. Seiko gets a down for clipping the tachymeter scale to the point it is not seriously useable.
Bottom line is I enjoy USING the Flightmaster very much. It is stylishly very different than most watches out there and its functionality tips it over the top.
I was not going to purchase the Flightmaster without putting it to work for me. It is quick and does not require cell phone or calculator.

The crystal exposed is kind of a let down if you do use the watch for what it is. However, in that same respect all the information on the bezel on the Seiko will scratch away and be illegible. Not only that but the diameter of the viewable space is bigger will all the information enclosed and protected within the watch. All that the Citizen would ever need is a good polish on the stainless steel and maybe eventually a new crystal. When all the information rubs off or becomes scratched on the bezel, that functionality is lost or tainted.

Very close call, to be sure. Seiko is my favorite brand, and I do like the Flightmaster, but the Nighthawk edges it out for me for a few reasons. First, I adore the GMT display (especially the plane hands). Second, I wanted to try an eco-drive (I love my Seiko recraft solar chronograph SSC667). Third, I like the internal rotating slide rule. Fourth would be the lug width. Fifth is the clarity of the lume display. And the sixth reason came down to price. I had been looking back to the Nighthawk and kicking myself for not getting one a few years ago. At the moment, now in 2020, the Nighthawk featured here is going for $500 or so. *But* I found the Blue Angels version -- which I actually prefer -- for $199, so I ordered one of those. I might have to get a Flightmaster in the future, though. Why settle for just one of these beauties?

Hello, TGV! Excellent duel as always! I really like those intro (w/ beautiful shots and good scores (Predator is AMAZING!)). I was wearing my Nighthawk today @ work and, as always, this is the one that gets lots of compliments, even from the non-watch fans. I reallt was hoping tht the duel would finish with a draw, but I accept the result. Both are very unique, a nice addition to any collection and for this price range, almost unbeatable. P.S.: In terms of quality the Citizen's bracelet is superb. You didn't see it in person (because this came in a strap), but it is very well built and the clasp, finishing and fit are so good. Cheers from Rio, Brazil, my friend.

I have the Citizen Nighthawk with the steel bracelet. But mine is the Japanese version and has an engraved back instead of the lasered back. I do think the Nighthawk is more unique, so I would give it 10 in the X-Factor. I saw one for $120.00 and I'm thinking about getting it. I bought a Citizen Blue Angles last week, and after 30 minutes decided to return it. For me the watch has too busy a dial, and reading the small font a nightmare. It did look good and is a popular watch, and this is much more about me. You view these videos, and the watch face is much bigger than in real life, and when you get the real thing it is another story. Moral, go to a retail store first and see it live. However, I am now planning to bite the bullet and spend more for something like the Fortis Classic Cosmonaut Chronograph Ceramic or maybe the B-42. Either has a much cleaner dial, and is well respected, but of course completely different price points.

Right, so, I know TGV is a Seiko fanatic, so let me do a little digging. Movement: B877 has the same rated accuracy at the 7T* series... and is plenty reliable, they've been being made almost as long to boot (mid 90's). Brand: I'll conceed that Seiko is the more "prestigious" (though I chuckle at that being used for either brand) brand, though I'd say that Citizen is more true to it's roots than the modern Seiko, which is doing the Toyota thing and driving itself out out of the price bracket of most of its audience... otherwise great review and, if I had to give it a score, I'd say both tied up, they're both excellent pieces for different parts of the aviation community. FWIW I know military pilots that wear both

Hi TGV, I do enjoy your videos and these got me into appreciating watches and in starting a collection since last year. I usually save up and buy a used watch in mint condition. The first one I bought for my dad's birthday was this Seiko flightmaster after watching your review of it. It is a great watch with so many features. The only thing I was not able to do was to set the alarm even after going through the manual. Other watches I now have is a Orient King diver from the 70s, a Seiko 5 Sports automatic, a Seiko V657 OB38 R2 for which there is little info on the net,, a Citizen 23 Jewel Automatic, an unusual swiss watch made by Brizo, a 20 year old swatch chrono, a mint Tissot PRS200 I grabbed by chance on ebay for cheap, a Casio edifice and my F-91W from primary school (still working). Thank you for your detailed reviews and tips.

Great video. I watched it multiple times. :)
I have both watches. They both look awesome, but I prefer the Nighthawk a bit better.
This Nighthawk would be even better if it was also atomic (kept the same dial). Citizen already has the technology.
This Flightmaster would be even better if it was solar (kept the same dial). Seiko has solar chronographs.
Both watches were updated (Citizen has newer atomic version, and Seiko has newer solar version),
but the look has been changed (which, in my opinion, is the best thing about these two watches).
I guess the newer/updated version of the watches are better (more practical),
but the charm was lost a bit (these two models look the best).
It would be good to have the newer technology, but keep the same look (because both watches look great already).

Two features of the flighty I cannot deny as a pilot.
    1. E6B can be used whilst in flight easier.
    2. Having proper Zulu time with minutes and hour makes it functional for filing flight plans and such which are referenced to this.
I do like the eco drive movement, I’d prefer to change batteries to have those two features noted.
Perhaps the Skyhawk is a more even comparison.

The Nighthawk is NOT a pilots watch as far as I can tell. Many modern pilots do not wear a watch at all, others wear something digital - forgetting which, for a watch to be a pilots watch, traditionally, post the old flieger watches, do they not have to have both an alarm and a chronograph? The Nighthawk looks a fine watch in terms of build quality, it has character in terms of design and I like the technology, but isn't it a travel watch? Something for a business man, or commercial traveller who needs to keep track of multiple time zones? The Seiko has the alarm which also covers a second time zone, but crucially it has the chronograph and that is a must to be regarded as a modern pilots watch...as far as I understood it? Maybe I am missing something?

@The Urban Gentry - In the opening shot did you intend to have set up a Chess 960 position with each color's Queen's knight and bishop set up correctly but the King's knight and bishop swapped? It's totally legal in Chess 960 with the symmetry between colors so I'm not complaining, just curious.

  • @FurrowedSon

Great review. I find it tough to pick between those two: the Nighthawk is super cool looking but that mineral crystal does put me off a bit. The Flightmaster is more of a pure tool watch so wins for me just because it's more what I need day to day. Both lovely watches though. I think the international reference for the Seiko at the end is SPB041, which might be helpful for anyone who wants to get hold of one.
