I can't believe you guys haven't gotten to 50K subscribers yet. You guys are one of my top 2 favorite youtube fishing channels for learning about everything fishing. You guys and Flukemaster are the best. Since I am on the west coast it's awesome that I found you guys. Your methods work a lot better for me being in Southern California. Thanks for the awesome content and keep up the great work. Hopefully one day I can get up north and use your guide services to really learn. I have done that with Flukemaster when I go out to South Carolina/Georgia, but now I need to do it with you guys.
I got both of these baits at the end of last season as I have very clear water so this video is perfectly timed for some gear and usage tips thanks Matt.
This has been my secret for a while now and it's starting to get big, such a great technique to just have fun, catches numbers of all kinds of different species and works all year round, and man, that Jackall I-prop is a killer
1st I have nothing bad to say about this video 2nd it’s amazing to see how much you’ve developed… it’s inspirational 3rd great info, thanks for posting 👍
I'm now fishing the small Duo's on a Dobyns Sierra 701, 7 ft., 01 power, extra fast and Curado BFS. I was using braid, but switched over to straight fluoro and like it much better. I can cast so much further with it over spinning rigs (even high end spinning rigs). I have enjoyed it so much I'm going to get a Megabass P5 Destroyer BFS rod and an Aldebaren BFS. The spybaits are alot of fun and effective, I use them high in the column when crappie are hitting minnows close to surface and then work them deeper for bass and walleye when they're sitting on points and whatnot.
Thank you for this info. Been wanting to target smallies with this technique but never had the confidence till now. Will update as soon as the success comes!
I feel like this video was made for me lol... my pop gave me some of these baits but have never tried them because I haven't had confidence.. Definitely going to give them a try now.. thanks for all the great info and sneaking in some retrieves... looking forward to the catch video!!
Thank you, this video is, yet again, awesome and as always I will be taking this with me out on the water. I bought a mess of these spybaits over a year ago and haven't really thrown them enough/had many bites. Now, I don't have any more unanswered questions on when/how/where to throw these next time the opportunity arises. Thanks man.
Had some luck on the Duo Realis 80 today caught two 1lb and a half's on it. Matt you are very right about the Duo looking so dead in the water I was looking at it and was thinking, this looks dumb, but to my surprise it was getting bite.
Wow I came back to watch this video because I used my spybaits for the first time in awhile last week and wanted to see any tips I may have forgotten. So I was subbed to your channel I believe around 35k sub's because I remember videos way before this. Thanks for all your great tips Matt & Tim. Matt please send me a DM on here if you're still on your trip. 👊🏼🙏🏼
I think you hit on an interesting point talking about bass following the bait. I don't think a lot of anglers realize just how often this happens. Not about bass, but a case in point was a trout fishing trip to Lake Tahoe. I was up on a rock in a cove about 20 feet above the water. My buddy was on the shore throwing a Rapala Countdown and I could see straight down into that crystal clear water. There was a flat about 5 feet deep that went out about 15 or 20 yards with an abrupt drop off into much deeper water . I could not believe what I was seeing. On his first 6 or 8 casts he had maybe 12 or 15 BIG trout following that plug some only in he's behind and some were HUGE..I'm talking 26-30 inch fish or even more. My buddy had no earthly idea this was happening until I told him and understandably I am not sure he believed me, but he kept casting. I was coaching him, telling him to kill the bait,, or dip it, whatever. If he killed it, the trout stopped until he moved it again if he ripped it, they sped up to keep up with the bait. Eventually fewer and fewer fish were following until , after about 20 or so casts, they stopped altogether. He never did have one commit and not a single fish went past the edge of the drop off onto the flat. The point is had I not been in a unique place to observe my friend would have never known there was a trout anywhere in the vicinity. These weren't bass but I am pretty sure this same thing happens a LOT more than we realize. If you and Tim could swing some videos of this behavior and illustrate some triggering action that would be awesome (difficult but awesome).
Thanks for the vid Matt, I've been waiting for this one. I mainly fish Pedro & Melones Sometimes these bass can come down with a bad case of lockjaw, esp Pedro. I've been looking for something non plastics to interest them, thanks again.
actually the the Realis Spinbait 80 has significantly more body roll than the Jackall. It also cast further. There's the Spinbait 80, Spinbait 80 gfix (this one has more cork screw roll) The 80 Gfix is cast super far. Both have a very cool shimmy. Realis also makes a larger version (the 90). good vid!
Very true Realis Spinbait 80 and 80 Gfix and 90 and the new Alpha 72 all have way more roll than the Jackall I prop. They all have shimmy and the Jackall doesn't. the jackall falls head first.
Man Matt, I bet Tactical Bassins' audience retention analytics are amazing... so much great info. just bam, bam, bam one good tip after another. love the channel and love the videos. Ever fished a Yo-Zuri 3DB Prop, if so whats your opinion vs other prop lures you have used?
You guys rock!! I’ve learned so much from your videos ,I’m fishing a spy bait for the first time here in Ohio tomorrow, we finally got a warm day so I’m playing “ hooky” from work no pun intended lol
Been fishing these for years now and I still haven’t really figured out when the best time is to fish them it’s just some thing I throw whenever I think about it and nothing else is working sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. When do you think is the best time to throw these? In this video you were saying they were reasons it wasn’t good for that day. What are you looking for That would indicate it’s time to throw these?
love the videos and information. one think to add......i love how you guys talk about retrieve and gear, but what about conditions? you said it isn't working for you in the video and later when conditions were right you would get a fish catching vid. but what are those conditions? cloudy, pressured, schooling, post spawn?
@tacticalbassin What time of year are you typically throwing a spy bait? Is it more of a cold water bait when you’re mostly finesse fishing during the winter months? I’ve only thrown one for under 5 minutes because I didn’t think it looked that good going through the water. But now after watching this video I feel like I have some confidence in it if I dedicate sometime to throw it and learn how and when to fish one.
Great video Matt. Do you have any line management issues using 15 pound braid on a bait caster?Line digging into reel on a fish catch? Tricks or tips that aid small braid line management on casting equipment?
Ok. If this bait is worth our time, how about the circumstances in which to use it. Season, water temperature, Sunny day or cloudy. Etc. Post, pre spawn. You guys have spoiled us with info. Love the channel! Good work!
Prime time to use this is Spring and Fall...think Jerk bait minus the twitching! The 90 size can get down to 20ft. while the smaller 80 size is right around 10 - 12ft. Like Matt said, this is a straight retrieve lure, the lure does all the work for you just have a slow and steady retrieve and you're all set. This is the info I've learned by studying these baits. Matt, I was always under the impression that this was a bait for suspended fish (open water, big points etc.) but you mentioned catching them in cover. What are you looking for or condition wise what are you looking for when you decide to throw these? Does wind help the bit as well?

How shallow can the IProp run effectively? I live in nj and have only 6 ft or less of water depth in 90% of my lakes. I've tried the lucky craft and the storm arashi spin and cant really effectively fish them without sinking deep and hanging up in mud. Ive heard the Jackall Iprop runs way more shallow than the others and wanted some feedback before I waste another $15 on a bait I cant throw most of the time. Thanks!
I'm looking at the upwards pointed tail in the IProp and I guess that is what could make it run more shallow? Hopefully I get some answers here from TB or any other fellow fans. Love you guys Matt and Tim! Keep up the great content!
Matt, did you ever get around to doing the follow-up video for spybaits? I'm going to start throwing them this week, the largemouth here are transitioning to fall patterns but are really finicky right now.
Is this something to throw year round? Also do you guys have any power plant lakes with mostly spotted bass? That's what my home lake is and I've caught fish, but never large numbers of fish.
Hey Matt another great video but couple questions. I see you had bluebird skies with few clouds so are those the best days to throw it because it gives more visibility for the fish? Also water temp, is it better for cold water? Is it a good prespawn or spawn lure? Thanks so much man!!!
So far I haven't seen water temp matter, they just eat it. Bluebird with a little chop is ideal. On this day the trouble was massive schools of shad swimming all around... I needed something like an A-rig to draw the fish's attention.
would you consider this a great search bait also? For someone who is a muddy shallow fishin guy and needs to gain experience in the deeper waters for post spawn?
You are very informative. definitely a good fisherman. but...I'm from Illinois and we have to work a lot harder to catch big bass than u cali guys. if u ever fish here make a vid and I will definitely be watching it. It's apples and oranges I guess? good vid tho
Hang in there bud, its not as apples and oranges as you may think. We're blessed to catch a lot of giant bass but there are a lot of guys out here that have never caught a 5 lber. And regardless, we intentionally adapt our content to speak to the broader market... we're not "western" focused at all. Thanks for supporting the channel in Illinois!
Hi guys: Weird problem with the Duo Realis. I have found that that lead spinner just slices up my line! I catch a couple fish and the spybait goes sailing on the next cast never to be seen again. Any tips to avoid this? I threw them first on 8 pound mono and then on 20 pound braid. Do I just need to retie after 3 to 4 casts?
Fish 5 or 6 pound fluoro ML rod 7 plus ft. and very spinning reel. Never hear of this problem and fished the technique for several years many many fish. On all propped baits always check the shaft make sure you dont have fine hair, moss strands or debris. Essentials to spybaiting2 covers this in detail (possible set ups). A friend of mine just won on this technique this summer and set all time records, nearly 100 lbs of bass for 4 days
This particular day there were a ton of shad schools swimming around keeping the bass' attention. In general, clear water with a slight ripple is the best.
Was looking into these, but when I see them at the store they all seem so small....like almost panfish baits. May just pick one up and try it out on spinning gear. But looking at Tackle Warehouse, the Lucky Craft Pointer 90 says 1/2 oz., so may want to start with that on my lighter Jerkbait casting setup.
hey, off topic question. I can't find a knot that is thin enough to pass through guide on my micro guide rod. I have tried the fg, which works great on a leader that is larger than the braid. But, on light line it doesn't hold. Albright is OK but still sticks, but the Alberto or the 6 turn surgeons are just too big. Looking for advice here. The rod is a 6'9" MH.
Matt, great video!!! I have a question, we have had some success with them here in PA but it seems we have to have a lot of water clarity for them to be effective. We do decent with jerkbaits with 2' of visibility but with spybaits anything under 3' and we don't do well at all, so I wanted to know if you encountered this or have you been able to find a time or place that they work in more stained water conditions?
I've been able to get them in stained water as long as the fish are in visible cover and I could throw to them. It doesn't work as a search bait until the clarity improves.
Actually the technique works in stained water an has been test. Considerations are visibility (or how stained- muddy?), bait present, and position of the fish or if fish are using cover)..
The most remarkable thing about the iProp is the way fish absolutely HATE this thing. They don't just hit it, the fish destroy it! You WILL need to replace the trebles. I caught a smallie and a walleye at the same time on that bait, something I have never seen anywhere by anyone before.
Ok, so I’m new to bass fishing. I’ve never seen a spy bait. So the idea of this type of bait is to create water movements and get bass from far away to come to it?
It will work most of the time. The problem this day was giant bait balls that were much more attractive to the bass than my one little spybait swimming amongst thousands of shad.
I love when I come across your old videos they are gems
Yea, you guys need to update your Spybait Video showing some real action and explaining when and why.

You can run them in a couple feet of water and IMO line truly becomes invisible at about 3 lb

They're pretty light but give it a try, you might be surprised
hey, off topic question. The rod is a 6'9" MH.
also, I can never cinch the knot correctly
Andrew Dickens fg will hold. if you cant get it to hold it is user error or you are using to heavy of braid for the size leader.
We don't have a solution for you. We fish a blood knot and it comes through semi-micros, never tried it in a micro guide.
hey what knot do u use for your leaders
When I throw an iprop it drives nose down, is that because I'm using floro? Does it matter?
Definitely because of the Fluoro but I wouldn't worry about it
Matt, great video!!!
It doesn't work as a search bait until the clarity improves.
smalljaw I'm
Before Matt got a collar mic😅
My guy!
I have a duo that I haven't used yet because I'm worried about it getting stuck in the cover do you ever worry about that?
Eh, you just have to go for it. You might lose it but its not doing you any good in the tackle box.
I started using a bait knocker that I made myself and I don't loose near the lures as before. maybe this will help the person asking...
Would you show us how too tie braid to the spook too keep it from slipping please and what kind of knot you use too tie the braid too Floro or mono
Search tacticalbassin knots and you'll see a couple vids on how we connect them, its a modified blood knot.
Random question, is the zman project z chatterbait worth 4 dollars more than the original?
Yeah its a much better bait
Always rock my torpedoes. Been hitting big bass
I love throwing that when i find bass busting on shad
How do you feel about the Kelly j from lucky craft?
While it looks the same, the Kelly J is a topwater. Its a good bait but its not a spybait.
Matt, you mentioned early in the video that the conditions weren't right for the spy bait. What conditions are right for spy bait?
It will work most of the time. The problem this day was giant bait balls that were much more attractive to the bass than my one little spybait swimming amongst thousands of shad.
So weird seeing you now without a beard. My advice keep the beard.
Minimum volume video, ads in normal volume . Thanks, my roommate is up. 1 star, even though the content is ok.
Heddon torpedoes are amazing
What would you throw on a 6.3.1 reel
6.3 to 1 is the most universal speed, you can use it for ANYTHING
TacticalBassin Thank you
I just got a new shimano caenan
When do you guys think the bass will start spawning on Clearlake?
Typically middle of April
When i fish my spy bait the perpelers don't spin what do i need to do
Think it’s time for a spy bait video now
