Hi Michelle, I 'm recovering from a broken wrist and really appreciate your work. I love your tone of voice, the rhythm, the clarity of the instructions, the way you keep it friendly but not too chatty and the implicit encouragement when you talk about "starting points" and thus help us feel we are going to progress. Great exercises well explained in a helpful progression. thanks

Hi Michelle, Thank you for your proper guidance with these exercises. I am recovering from a wrist surgery and your videos are very helpful and easy to follow. I have been going for hand therapy paying hundreds of dollars for each visit at my Ortho's practice and frankly they don't pay as much attention to their patients during the exercises to correct any wrong movements as you explain in details. Thank you so much for guiding so many people who truly need your help.

Like others who have commented, I am recovering from a broken wrist with surgery. I really like your approach. It seems to encourage stretching more in line with Yoga or other formal stretching practice. Also, for what it is worth, my doctor's "handout" on the subject encourages a "fishtail" exercise that goes back and forth from flexion to extension immediately with no pause in between. With no disrespect intended to my fine surgeon, I like your approach much better, especially on the extension aspect. Thank you!

Doing well in my recovery but wrist extension is definitely where I have the most loss in range of motion. So this video is exactly what I needed. The first exercise is my favorite as it gets me a deeper stretch than anything else I’ve tried. Look forward to progressing to the last two exercises once I’m a little further along in my recovery. Thanks so much!

Hi Michelle, these are really helpful videos for rehab. I got my left hand's scaphoid surgery done recently and, due to plaster for a long time, now my wrist movement is very restricted. To recover, I need both Wrist Flexion and Wrist Extension exercises. Can you please advise the sequence and gap between both type of exercises?

  • @EzraHodges

Not a person who responds to videos, but this is the exception here. I had a brachial plexus malfunction after shoulder surgery about 5/6 months ago. 3 months with a flaccid arm/hand and the wrong type of sling. Once the nerves and muscles started working a bit it was discovered the arm and hand were in a hot mess. Working patiently hard getting strength and range of motion back to as close to normal as possible. Wrist extension and forearm pronation are two of the challenges I am working on now. These suggestions are great and you explained the issue I have with the proximal row which I had no idea about. You also helped me figure out why sometimes when I stretch the wrist I get a slight pain in the back of the metacarpals. I do a similar thing as the kneeling demonstration except I am standing over a counter; has been working great too. The forearm pronation video was great too. Thinking my issue(s) with the forearm and getting my arm straight may be related.
My goal is to be able to do at least one push-up in a month. Need some good wrist extension

Hi Michelle, I had a wrist facture in April and have been using all your exercises and have found them extremely helpful. I thank you so much for your clear explanations. My question is how many different types of stretches would you advise doing in one session or would you recommend that I do different ones at different times during the day.

    • @VirtualHandCare
      @VirtualHandCare  2 года назад +3

So sorry I am just now seeing your comment. It can be helpful to do 2-3 stretches in one session of different body parts such as fingers, thumb, wrist and forearm, then repeat that again several times a day. However I don't usually like to do too many of the same stretches for the same body part and motion, such as too many wrist extension exercises. Hope that helps!

    Thanks.
The carpal strap stretch is new to me and was helpful. My carpals are very tight s/p distal radial orif.
Best available evidence to reduce tissue creep (ability of collagen and elastin to recoil) is a 30 to 60” hold.
    Long prolonged stretches are good.
But the most benefit per unit time is between 30 and 60”.
Not to say that repeated motions and short holds in end range aren’t helpful.
It is helpful to go through that available range.
But for maximum stretch, 30-60” have the best outcomes both short and long term.
I do a few 60” slow and gradual stretches initially. After that, I am able to reach my end range more quickly and I switch to 30”.
Some evidence suggests that icing immediately after stretching will further help reduce tissue creep.
I stretch until I can no longer reach anymore substantial range, then immediately ice afterwards.
Gel packs don’t get cold enough and they don’t stay cold for nearly the requisite 15’ required to have any effect.
I use 1 part alcohol to 6-7 parts of water to make a ‘slush pack that’ will conform to the wrist. Ratio changes based on your freezer temp.
    Too slushy, add water.
    Too rigid, add alcohol.
I use ziplock brand quart size freezer bags and double them up.
They don’t last indefinitely but they’re cheap. And they get and stay cold for multiple uses.
The goal of icing is blood vessel constriction to reduce inflammation (and now diminish tissue creep-unrelated to blood vessel constriction).
Gel ‘ice’ packs produce very little vessel constriction relative to something like an ice cup, or the aforementioned alcohol packs. Gel packs are genuinely almost worthless.
I wish someone would come up with a wrist flexor passive stretching device. Something I could wear for prolonged durations.
I’ve looked on DME catalogues to Amazon and have found nothing.
If you could find a way to make such a device that could simultaneously distract the wrist joint and stretch, it would probably be more effective as well as more comfortable. When my OT distracts my wrist, I get easily 5 more degrees of ext. It’s also less painful.
Granted, that would be difficult to design. But short of that, if you could design a device that passively stretched the wrist, even w/o distraction, I think you’d be on to something.
I don’t need to tell you how impactful it is on ADLs and IADLs to lack full wrist extension.
    It’s so aggravating.
    I would buy one.
It’s good for us less than compliant and lazy Pts.
    Thanks again.

With me, I can bend my wrist back relatively well but flexing/extending back has kind of always been difficult for me. Although I’m pretty much able to do all these stretches mildly comfortably but I feel like 3-5 might be better exercises for me, which I’ll continue practicing daily. My left wrist extension is pretty ok but my right one needs a lot of work. I’m glad I found this video though and I hope these stretches help me.

Thank you so much for all of your videos. I have been actively following your advice. On Aug 2, I broke my wrist and had a plate, screws and pins put in my wrist. The pins were removed last week and my doctor told the therapist to be aggressive. My hands and fingers are swollen. I was in excruciating pain in the last 2 sessions. I was told no pain no gain. Is this normal or should I find a new Occupational Therapist?

You are welcome! To answer your question, I don’t believe in no pain no gain. Unfortunately I still see it a lot. That can be counterproductive and just isn’t necessary to make positive, pain free gains.

i broke my scaphoid bone about 2 years ago and it was never caught on the x-ray, well just recently i got into weight lifting and it’s been bothering me with limited ROM. Went to the doctor and turns out my scaphoid was broken in half and the bone was dying due to limited blood supply. I had surgery dec 23rd, bone graph taken from one of the bones in my arm and put between the 2 broken pieces of my scaphoid and internally fixed together with a screw. I was in a cast for 6 weeks and stared ROM exercises 4 weeks ago, then 2 weeks ago my my doctor released me to lift 20lbs and start doing some strengthening exercises and my grip strength is about 45lbs compared to my good arm of 95lbs. But you are right michelle! it hurts when you go from stretching extension to flexion, learned that the hard was when a PTA was stretching me at PT. Anyways my wrist flexion is pretty close back to 90° but my wrist extension is probably about 40-45° which is probably about what it was like before surgery, but i’m hoping to get back a full 90° wrist extension so i can do a push up. Ive been at the gym doing chest press and everything else only with 20lbs obviously but there is still some discomfort when weight bearing. Some of these exercises i’ve been doing but i’m gonna try the ones i. haven’t and do them multiple times a day to try and recover faster. I go back to the doctor in a couple days hopefully he’ll give me a full release.

Hello I had distal radius fracture in Nov 20 and had an ORIF of plate and screws. Now I am out of cast for two months and still my wrist joint is stiff and have very less range of motion. I am undergoing physiotherapy daily but unable to see any progress. I am a kind of disappointed and need some advise

Injury and bone and joint always take more time than expected. Can you try with hot water and try stretch hands !

@@rajaraman.p9074 You need a lot patience. Keep doing the therapy, the exercises suitable and tolerable, you will have daily miracle improvement out of the blue, your body surprises you and you can fold your fingers and do fist, the wrist stretching, etc. Keep doing the soaking hands and forearm on the hot water before start doing the exercises. The swelling, and stifness is the enemy.
