I visited this video shortly after my splint came off, and I was sure my arm would never move! I’m coming back a month later to share my progress so if you’re new in your journey to regain range of motion, you can see a specific example. The exercises in this video have helped me a lot.
I’m going to share my flexion progress. One of the things that helped me a lot was understanding the specific progress others have made.
Dec 8: surgery; one plate, seven screws to repair shattered olecranon. My left arm (which is my non-dominant arm).
Dec 28: stitches and splint removed. My flexion was 82 on that day. My arm felt SO locked up, I said to myself “I will be the exception. My arm will never move! 🤦‍♀️
Dec 28 thru January 18: brace was locked at 90 degrees
January 18: 90 degrees. I could barely touch my forehead with my thumb.
January 20: 95-100 degrees. I can touch my face and put a cracker/vitamin/something in my mouth. It’s a strain, but I can do it. I can touch the crown of my head. I can also touch my right ear lobe with my left arm.
January 22: flexion is comfortably 100 degrees. I can touch my forehead, nose, mouth and chin with my thumb.
January 24 OT appt, hence an official reading by my OT. She told me I’m at 108 active/114 passive. And ouch, that 114 hurt!
January 26: flexion is 112. I was able to put an earring in my left ear. Again, a strain, but I did it. Also, I can wash my hair with two hands. My left hand can almost touch my entire head, but can’t reach the length of my hair.
My goal is 115 in five more days.
PS. I bought a goniometer because I’m a geek and like to see where I’m at. My day starts with a need to loosen up.
Extension is a struggle. I hover between 20 and 30 during a given day depending upon time of day (mornings are almost always 30,) then with work in massage of the muscles and my extension exercises, I can usually get it to 20-25. I’ve been stuck there for a couple weeks.
I hope this is helpful, especially for those just starting out and feeling like they could use some hope and encouragement.

Can it be done with a brace on while working out for the arm?
Broke elbow July 17. I still wear a brace dr put it 90 degreei I can't bend more than I think 15-20 degrees. I'm crying. It's been over 2 months already!

I write this comment because I know how scary it feels when you can't flex your arm. I took me 5-6 months of training until I got it fully back. Now the flexion is identical on both arms, so don't listen to those who say that you will not get any improvement after several months have passed. I didn't do all the exercises from this video but I really liked the one with the pillow on the table. From my experience I can say that the most efficient way is just to press your injured arm with your healthy to the shoulder as much as you can and keep pushing for several minutes several times.

@@VirtualHandCare Thank you! Your exercises proved to be very useful for me. I started with 90 degrees, then I got 115 in the first 2 weeks. After that it took me another 3 months to get 125 degress and now it is 140. I can also say that even when I got the full flexion I still had to do exercises because the arm got stiff from time to time. But with the time that stiffness went away. The only thing left for me is the extension. My surgeon told me I have 0 degrees already but my healthy arm is about -5. I hope I can make them identical with the time because I am not used to having 0 degrees...

Got my cast off today after surgery and still getting my head around how immobile my arm is. Apart from not being able to extend it, I can't flex it at all beyond 90 degrees, which is scary. Can hardly touch my face, not to mention shoulder or anything alike. I presume and hope it will come after being able to extend it more... the long road ahead, but I'm ready to push. Thanks for sharing.

I dislocated my left elbow last nov 20, 2024 and I'm thankful my joints are already back in its right position. However, I still can't flex my elbow and my doctor suggested I start physical therapy but it's so expensive, so i decided to do it at home but I made sure to ask my orthopedic doctor if the thing I will do is okay. I started using my injured arm to do simple tasks like holding and grabbing things, at first I really felt pain but I just endured it a little bit so that my muscles would get used to moving and stretching again. It's been 23 days since my injury happened and I can partially use and move my elbow now but I still feel a lot of stiffness in the back and front of my elbow. But still i have so much improvement during the process i can now reach my other elbow, my butt, I can also use my hand and elbow to slightly bend and use my cellphone and most importantly I can now reach my head and tie my hair even though it still feels a lot of stiffness. Just don't lose hope and keep on feeling the stiffness and pain so that your muscles will get used to it and eventually we can totally get the full mobility of our injured elbow.
PS. I still have a few months to recover and get my full mobility.

I had a very fragmented olecranon fracture and they've put in a plate and screws. My surgery was 3 weeks ago and I started physical therapy 2 weeks ago and I can only bend 90 degrees. Extension is easier for me, although it's obviously not all the way. My physical therapist told me to exercise extension by trying to reach things like I need to grab something in front of me and sometimes I grab on the bathroom sink or window handle and pull back to extend it as much as I can or when I lie in bed just let it drop over the edge so the gravity pulls it. Flexion hurts so bad, I feel pulling, pain, fear... exercises from this video are what my physical therapist recommends too. Hopefully it will get better soon...

Thank you for these very helpful exercises. Three and a half weeks ago I had a spiral fracture in the upper humerus, requiring a plate and 12 screws. The brace came off after two weeks, at which time the surgeon advised me to continue the basic extension and flexion exercises that I'd been doing since the surgery, since the brace had an angle adjustment mechanism at the elbow that locked and unlocked, making it possible to exercise right away. Thank you for your very clear instructional videos! I can see how they will be very helpful in getting back maximum range of motion. One thing: It seems that in Exercise 7, in which a chair is used to lean on, for safety reasons, it would be good to prop the front of the chair against a wall to stabilize it so that it doesn't inadvertently move while doing the exercise.

      @_Stolen_hearts_ Год назад +4

@@namratasingh2698 yes my elbow recovered completely, it took me almost 3 months to recover completely as I didn’t have any fracture . I did extension and flexion exercise twice in a day soon after a month of my elbow dislocation, and doctor had given me an Ayurveda oil to apply for elbow twice in a day after exercise that helped my swelling and relieved my pain after exercise. In every 10 days I could see 1 inch difference in my flexion and extension motion. And after 45 days of my elbow dislocation, my doctor had recommended me to use my hand in minor house work like trying to take my phone near my ear, eating food with my hand, washing utensils, try to comb my hair, wash my face, join my hands to pray (this all household things were not possible in the beginning, I suffered lot of pain when trying to do it. But didn’t give up and kept trying it everyday) I even did 2 curls lifting 5kg weight as high as I can, not forcefully. It helped to strengthen my elbow, now even after completely recovering I thought of continuing my exercise for another 1 month, to strengthen my elbow, it feels like my elbow had never dislocated, so don’t delay to do exercise start exercise soon after 30 days of your elbow dislocation incident. And don’t miss exercise any day, you won’t get good results and your elbow will get more stiff and will take more time and effort to make it in normal motion (NOTE : don’t do flexion and extension exercise together, 1st complete extension exercise and then take 2 hours break and then do flexion exercise)
