- We closed out The History of UFC Video Games Part III looking at the final installment of the Undisputed franchise. Amongst Undisputed 3’s many highlights, none shined brighter than PRIDE mode, where we were allowed to step out of the Octagon, and into the ring. Grand Prix Tournaments with stomps to the face, soccers kicks, oh it’s all perfectly legal. But this wasn’t the first video game appearance of Japan’s biggest and best mixed martial arts promotion. To experience that, we’d have to turn back the clock nearly 10 years from Undisputed 3’s release. Today, we’ll do that… but that’s not all. PRIDE FC on the PlayStation 2 wasn’t the only MMA video game released without the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s branding. In 2010, EA Sports would get into the fight with their own game, EA Sports MMA. 2011 would see the debut of Supremacy MMA, a much darker, grittier title from Kung-Fu Factory. The scene was hot, even outside of UFC. And that’s exactly what we’re going to dive into here today. Welcome to The History of UFC Video Games Part IV: Uncaged Competition.

EA MMA is basically the strike force game and I actually loved that game, wasn’t better than any of the undisputed games, but I still put hours into that game 😂

Pride FC on the PS2 was heaps of fun. I loved creating my own fighters and pitting them all against each other in the Grand Prix. EA Sports MMA was such a fun game too and like you Ian I'm so bummed we never got another entry.
Out of curiosity how many fighters can you create in that PrideFC game?
I kept a physical paper spread sheet of real life wins/loss/draw records (with opponents, times, and method of victory) followed by my exhibition tournament stats for every fighter in EA: MMA. That’s how much time I spent with that game.
I kind of do the same for my WWE 2k19 Universe( yeah, I’m still playing it) but only with title records (more detailed than the records provided in-game) and I’ll jot down matches that get past 15,000 points and put a tally under that show to compare how each show is doing.
And no, I don’t have too much time on my hands 😂. I need much, much more.
This was another fantastic addition to this series. That EA Sports MMA retrospective still gets me emotional over a year later🥲. Hearing all of your beloved memories with that one and also hearing that you actually got the opportunity to speak and hang with the developers of said game is just even more special. I’m very happy you got to create those memories that will stick with you forever. Hearing your stories makes me love you all the more, every day. That’s how special and relatable you are to me, Ian. So I just want to say thank you again for all of your amazing, wonderful content, and I hope to try Pride FC, and although the servers have been dead, I hope to try EA Sports MMA one day. Hope you and the DanDans continue to have amazing ones, and I love you all.😊❤️
I remember begging my mom to give me EA sports MMA and when I finally got it for Christmas, it was dream come true finally playing Randy Couture in a match along with Bobby lashley thank you for talking about these classic bangers bro can’t wait for part 5

Man, EA Sports MMA...a love letter to the sport of MMA, from EA, of all people. All the rules and details from various leagues, and the presentation and realism....i'm glad I played it when it came out. What a wonderful retrospective.

Having been a fan of ufc since the 90s VHS days, i was there every step of the way through the evolution of the sport from having bas rutten shamrock and severn in wcw vs the world to dreamcast so cool to have a video like this is sick nice one dude.
I am so happy to know someone also put entire stories and characters from their MMA games into spreadsheets and stuff. With a bit of imagination, you can get ALOT out of simple, repetitive but customizable sports games, even without a story mode.
I still play Pride FC to this day. I also installed a Flip Top to play Import Fire Pro Returns, King of Colosseum II, New Japan Pro Wrestling 4 and All Star Pro Wrestling 3.
Fun fact, I've all my kid's have started and finished College before 2 Cold Scorpio's entrance has finished in ASPW3.

I remember ea MMA really well, this thing was fun as hell, especially in person multiplayer. Extremely accessable and fluid.

Man I still think the submission mechanics were the best in EA MMA. You had to actually use some technique, and the different controls for chokes and joint locks felt satisfying as hell, and actually gave you a sense of what you're doing. It felt fuckin awesome pulling those off in online matches when your opponent couldn't cheat out of it like the computer does lol.
It may not be my thing, but you're crazy if you think I'm going to skip a new 616 retrospective now that RUclips is actually showing me that things got released.
Makes me INSANELY happy to hear someone shout out WMMA 3. I have easily sunk a couple 1000 hours into that game. Especially with the real world mods?? Come on… No self respecting MMA Fan / gamer could look at that with anything other than pure love in their souls. I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir but TEW is absolutely stellar as well. Should have known of all that of all the people, it’d be you, my friend!!

I played Pride FC so much when it came out
I remember the weird right stick controls in the fight night games. Hated it, switched to face buttons, fixed lol
I kinda wish for an MMA game with ALL original characters and great gameplay. And when i say all original characters i mean the roster is all original characters. Some can be voiced by real MMA fighters but i want it to purely be original characters.
I have never really cared about mma, except for paige vanzant if you catch my drift, but this series led me to pull up and watch some free fights the ufc has uploaded, and watch i did, for 2 and half hous straight, in the that time i watched brock lesnar be the first man to go 2 rounds with shane carwin.
I didn't expect you to cover EA Sports MMA twice on your channel as a separate review and retrospective. I was thinking it would have been Pride FC, Supremacy MMA, and Bellator: MMA Onslaught for The History of UFC Video Games Part IV - 'Uncaged Competition.'
That revenge music reminds me of alot of sleeping in first period because we played all night. ESPECIALLY ON MONDAYS.
I was a face button user for undisputed 2009 but I was less of a striker and more of a submission specialist. I was about 99% effective with submissions because of the way I held the controller when I performed them. I routinely got accused of using a modded controller. I've never used a modded controller but yeah I did have an unfair advantage based on my controller positioning

Really good. Jeez, you really know your MMA History. Pride FC looked really awesome. I remember seeing it on shelves but I’ve never been into MMA so I passed so I missed out. The presentation and entrances looked really incredible for the time.
That pride game was dope, took a minute to understand the ground game but was great for its time

The mma controls were great if you liked the Fight Night series, I love the game, still have it
EA used the dual control schemes because that's how the Fight Night games were set up after RD2, you had total control punching which used the analog stick and face button punching, I never understood how people complained about the controls for EA MMA when you could dp the exact same thing in Fight Night and no one ever complained

Wow, I've never heard of this PS2 modification to play games from other regions.
I used the Matrix chip for PS2, in Brazil this chip was the salvation of those who wanted to play PS2, with the prices of games being cheaper, since an original was 5x more expensive. And the good thing about this chip is that with it, it was possible to play games from the United States, European and Asian regions.

30:36 also when you switched to face buttons the type of punch you threw was dependent on which way you were moving the left stick. Which ALSO was terrible. You can't throw an uppercut or straights while walking forward only hooks.
