EA Sports FIGHT NIGHT: Resurrect The Legend. (What Happened to Fight Night?)

- 'Fight Night' is without a shadow of a doubt the best selling, highest quality, most consistent boxing video game franchise of all time. With 5 entries spanning across a 7 year window, tens of millions of copies sold, and an ever-growing roster of top caliber superstar athletes on the scene, there's only one question on everyone's mind... What the hell happened to Fight Night? Where did it go? Did EA Sports cancel Fight Night? If not, what's the story?!
Well, that's what I'm here for today. I'll tell you exactly what happened, why it happened, and we'll even delve into the future of the franchise. Boxing is in an exponentially better place in late 2021 that it was in 2011, when Fight Night Champion released, so the scene is set. All we need is for someone to sit down and direct the next masterpiece. Let's get to it.

Can we all agree that _Champion_ had an incredibly silly, cliche ridden but still fun as hell story mode? Well, except the last fight. Isaac "Totally not Randy Orton" Frost is damn near impossible to beat.
@Savox, I beat Issac Frost, however it took me 2 hours to do so. Also, where the hell is your Android 17 playlist? It's been gone and I'm subscribed to you. So, WTF?!
@@gameshock2916 Let it go.
@@SavoxYT Don't pull that UNUS ANNUS crap with me. Those videos didn't have a time limit like theirs.
@@gameshock2916 Again, let it go. Those videos aren't coming back.
Hell yes fight night content! I believe it was recently announced they’re doing another in 2023?!
I'll cover that information in detail. =)
2022 is ufc 5 so the new fight should be 2024
I want another one like Fight Night Champion... I played the story mode 100 times it was so good. It told the story of "The Hurricane" just in a different way
eSports Boxing Club is coming out soon.
@@1roundleft821 You can leave this comment as many times as you want, it doesn't mean you're right.
I so can’t wait for this premiere. Can’t wait to learn more of this franchise!
It's a fun one, my dude.
With ESBC stuck in development hell and EA already having a base engine to start from, I think we will see a new Fight Night very soon as EA will want to monopolize the boxing industry while they have time to do so.
The man, the myth, the legend.
Hahaha, we'll see. Just give us SOMETHING, right?
Great look at the franchise, man. EA really was good back in the day at making grab-and-go fun games that someone like me could grab without knowing or caring about the sport itself. I used to have a blast in college with their budget hockey title, same as you being able to hop into Fight Night and just enjoy the time.
I think a new boxing game would sell a ton right now. As much as I despise even saying this, if someone threw the Paul brothers into a boxing game, it’d sell to fans of theirs, and it’d also sell to people who would buy it solely to beat them up.
Another great video man!
You're 100% right. I made a point to not mention his name, but you're right. You wanna do business? Put that jabroni in the game and let people play as Roy Jones Jr. against him, hahaha
I remember getting my 360 right after Xmas when it released....and all I had at the beginning was fight night. Holy shit was it AMAZING! I loved it so much.
Great memories, right?
The combat sports stuff is my favorite content on the channel.
More on the way. Maybe a huge retrospective in January. But you didn't hear it from me.
@@616Entertainment gotchu🤐
Man, Fight Night Round 3 was my jam. I remember I made a boxer who looked just like me. I'm a bit of a big, beefy welterweight in real life, and had the Burger King as my trainer, which me and buddies just found to be hilarious. I don't know what happened with EA. It just seems to be to where franchises go to die.
Hahahaa, I love that
@@616EntertainmentYou can actually still play Fight Night Champion on Xbox ONE and Xbox Series X as it's one of two Fight Night games (the other being Fight Night Round 4) that is backward compatible and Fight Night Champion still has online play. Sorry for you Playstation guys, but it looks like EA Sports is only allowing us Microsoft guys to keep playing Fight Night 4 and Fight Night Champion. I wish the SONY had backward compatibility as it did from the PS2 and PS3 era.
The crazy thing is that the last fight night still looks amazing lol. I’d love to see a boxing title again. Thanks for digging around and giving us the info we are too lazy to search for!
It really does hold up.
You ain't been paying attention bro. ESBC is coming out soon.
@@1roundleft821 Uh... No it isn't. Clearly YOU are the one not paying attention.
@@1roundleft821 it’s probably not gonna live up to fight night
@@swaggalikechrist bruh, over 200 licensed boxers with modern day technology. Fight Night wasn't even true boxing. You could spam straights, and side steps to win fights, very little about it was realistic.
I thought I was the only one wondering what happened to fight night!! I loved all the fight night game's! I was waiting for fight night round 5
I've got all the info you need, brudda
Man, I remember how mind blowing Round 3 was at the time, and Champion is one of my favorite fighting games ever. I want to see the UFC games continue to improve, but I would love to see Fight Night come back.
Absolutely no reason they can't switch back and forth between Fight Night and UFC. Hell, give me one new Fight Night now, and then wait 3-4 years for the next, I don't care.
I love boxing and the games, the game I played more than any on my n64 was ready 2 rumble!! I'm definitely buying ESports Boxing Club!! Man I hope it's good... love the content Ian !
Fingers crossed that ESBC comes together well.
I still play fight night champion to this day. Pretty excited for ESBC, they already have a great roster and I'm sure they're taking their time to polish the punching animations.
I certainly hope so. I want it to be great.
Can’t wait for this! I remember fighting with Sonny Liston when he was 43 and fat. Still knocked out a ton of fools.
Dude Sonny still got it.
I've been playing Fight Night Round 3 on my PS2 recently and I had this thought "Yo wtf hasn't there been a new boxing game? It's been forever!" And you go and made this video, great job man. Hope we get a new one soon!
Great minds, my dude.
We are, ESBC has been in development for 3 years and is set to come out within a year. Over 200 licensed boxers will be on the game.
Damn bro, I didnt know how much of a hard-core boxing fan you were, salute!
Yea man, I'm a big boxing guy. I have tons of interests, I just don't have the time to cover all of it on the channel all the time! Hahaha. Thanks for watching.
Remember going to blockbuster and wanting Fight Night Champion and my mom not letting me get it at first because it was M, but I flipped to the back and showed her Pacquiao was in it and that was good enough for me to rent it. Boxing is something that goes from generation to generation and while I hope UFC 5's career is fleshed out with a better career that isn't a pain to playthrough. MMA doesn't currently have the history boxing does to connect people, my dad played as Tyson and would tell me the insane KOs he had or Foreman winning the belt at 2 different points in his life while playing it or watching it with me. But the feeling I have with them not going into it and getting a 2nd team for boxing is that you can't put a damn ultimate team mode in any combat sports games. But hope you keep making vids, always neat seeing at least 1 creator do what they want
It's not very often I would say I'd be down day one on an EA Sports game, but Fight Night and Skate are games I've wanted a sequel for so long. Hopefully it will come.
Here's hoping.
I played Fight Night Round 2 on the Gamecube all the time as a kid, and played it again recently. It still holds up, amazingly. Also... the Gamecube version does come with the SNES game Super Punch Out on the disc, so that's a hell of a plus.
Oh hell yea.
On point again! It's ridiculous.
I'm grateful that boxer share is still operating. Ppl live online that game every day bro!
WE NEED ANOTHER SOLID BOXING GAME!!! Still new shares daily! Money on the table.
Dude I know.
Man Ian at 7 minutes in the quote about EA taking one team and moving them to another project....it still rings true today, The news came out that the Madden Franchise updates we were promised all year from EA was being scrapped with the reason going around is that EA moved the Madden team over to work on the new college football video game rather than just put a new staff in place for that game. Crazy they are still doing this stuff today. Great video as always.
The full quote
"According to sources close to the game’s development, EA Sports has made the decision to cancel the plans for the remaining two large in-season updates for the mode. This comes just under two months since the game’s scouting update, the first of three planned feature improvements to the mode, was released to everyone.
The decision was made to cut the plans after moving a portion of the Madden development team over to the new EA Sports College Football game that’s currently in development. Because of the staff movement, EA Sports decided to put more of the focus on Madden towards year-over-year development."
They’re now claiming that those updates are still coming, so… I guess keep an eye on that, lol
Fight night round 4 was one of the most polished boxing games created. You can win and boxing match, brawl etc. The roster was pretty solid as well.
Also my biggest memory from Fight Night Round 3 (aside from it being the first game I bought for my PS3 along with Resistance Fall of Man) was the amount of outrageous Burger King sponsorship in the game. “LET’S TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT THAT KO FROM HOPKINS, BROUGHT TO YOU BY BURGER KIIIING!” “THIS HAS BEEN AN EA SPORTS PRESENTATION, I’M JOE TESATORE REMINDING YOU TO HAVE IT YOUR WAY AT BURGER KIIIING”
Hahahahhahahaaha
Awe man brings back memories. I loved Ready 2 Rumble! Also obviously Punch Out! And the way you talk, it sounds like I’d be addicted to a Fight Night game.
Dude give it a go!
This was a very good video. I really do hope we get that eventual new Fight Night game sooner rather than later. Thank you, Ian, and also that Patch cam at the end was super adorable. I want to pet him so badly.😌 Say hi to him for me, please.
Patch Cam!
eSports Boxing Club is going to be better than any Fight Night, I'm sure of it.
Biggest challenge with boxing games has always been license problems. Multiple promoters multiple organizations and every fighter needs to be licensed individually. As opposed to ufc where it’s one license and you got the whole roster.
Tons and tons of red tape, man. But here's the thing, I'll take a great game with 0 licensed fighters. We know the community will make all of the fighters anyway, right? lol
I was about to get some sleep, but you put out this masterpiece!
Thanks for watching!
Champion wasn't just a great game that sold well, it was a great product that had a compelling story to boot. Fight Night getting the plug pulled will always look odd, even knowing why it happened. Even as someone who isn't a hardcore Boxing fan or just a Fight Night fan, I was well aware of the series and it's strong presence, so knowing it's been absent for over a decade is a head-scratcher.
Though I'm not sure how well I can scratch with a boxing glove, but I can try.
the Graphics on Fight NIght Champion hold up so well that it looks about as good as a game released for the Series S/X
FNR4 and Champion both look good!
Gotta miss this premiere sigh.
Sounds like a good time
Sorry brudda. Next time.
Is that Smackdown 2 background music I hear? 💜 Maaaaaan I miss boxing games too.
Indeed it is!
Have loved your videos over the years and only learnt recently about you boxing focused videos. Great stuff! Curious if you ended up trying out Undisputed (ESBC) now that it's in Early Access? Game has some promising features in my opinion but is not quite there yet.
to be honest with you. I've been sold on ESBC from the day i found out Arturo Gatti and Mickey Ward where in it, everything since, the titles (all major titles minus WBA), the boxers (Loma, Canelo and Fury to name only 3 of the 200+) and the brands, have been a massive bonus for me. Also for the past 2 months or so, i've been keeping an eye on the ESRB and PEGI websites to see if the game's been rated.
The game is a way's out, don't go looking for it just yet. The team is actually expanding as we speak, there's a lot more work to do. But I've got my fingers crossed, for sure. I think there's big money there.
I'm a fighting game fan and I remember playing Fight night round 2 on the PS2 that was fun I wonder whatever happened to that series because I don't understand how EA did not make any more after 4 The series seemed popular to me it was fun to learn the mechanics of the game and how everything worked
I can’t wait for this! I love Boxing games! 🥊
Hell yea, brudda.
The Fight Night games were the bomb back in the day. I spent so many hours playing them particularly 2. It's incredibly fun. They aged so well.
They really have, dude.
Why 2? Looks the worst of them all.
This is a cool ass video with a lot of great questions. Thanks my dude!
Thanks for watching!
i have been asking myself the same question!! i spent a lot of time playing Fight Night R2 on xbox and Fight night Champion on ps3. The series was top notch and I cant believe they seem to have cancelled it. Theres been like no decent boxing games for the last 10 years now.
I address all of these statements. =)
I’m usually very picky about the games I play but something about how you cover these games makes me more open to trying different games. I usually play a lot of wrestling games, nhl, and guitar hero/rockband. You’ve gotten me into def jam vendetta, the old smackdown ps1 games, the n64 console in general with the wcw games and wwf games. Might have to try this one out, I actually have round 2 for ps2
I wouldn't steer you wrong, my dude.
Fight night champion was in heavy rotation back then. Isaac Frost was a beast of a final boss. We made a rule not pick him in 1v1 matches.
Dude, so nasty.
Fight Night & SSX really need to make an appearance on 4K Consoles. We miss them so much 😭😭😭
Man, that last SSX game was great, too
Great video. I was never a big boxing fan, wrestling is my jam. However, Fight Night R3 was a whole different story. My buddy, Chicago Steve, and I would play ps3 Fight Night R3 for hours. He would always ride with Jake LaMotta and I went through the whole middleweight division trying to beat him. Once, and only once, I whooped him up with Bernard Hopkins. I could never figure out the one punch flash ko punch, but Chicago Steve threw it every 2 punches haha
Hahahahaha, I love stories like this
Cool video, but you should have got an Xbox and been playing it since 2018 on last gen console via backwards compatible. Hell I'm still playing it, and i just recently got my retire as the GOAT achievement. I hope that ESBC delivers but i am not holding my breath but i will have Fight Night Champion on my Xbox until Xbox goes down or until the force able future. You have a new subscriber in me bro. Keep the videos coming. I liked the Showbizz clip. I remember he was all about Hard Knocks untill he wasn't. He wouldn't even mention or play Fight Night when we told him that it was back on Xbox via backwards compatible
I should have gotten an Xbox to play one PS3/360 game? Lol. No thanks. I own FNR4 and FNC and I still play them on my PS3!
I remember playing FN 2004 on XBox. It was fun. I played through the career mode of a custom heavyweight boxer, good times.
OMG PATCHES YOU ARE A CUTIE!
Career Mode was so good.
@@616Entertainment Now that I think of it, the thumbnail would be a great title for the next Fight Night game.
I'm really looking forward to ESBC. Its been too long since we've gotten a boxing game. I'm a bit disappointed that Tyson and Mayweather more than likely wont be in the game though.
I have my fingers crossed for ESBC, but they've got a ton of work to do.
Love the vid. Great work, Ian. I'd love to see more in-depth coverage of these games on this channel, a la Triangle X Squared Circle. I think it'd help in keeping Fight Night on people's minds, which I'd hope leads to more uproar at the absence of it.
I'm doing what I can. I was hoping this would've blown up more but hey, can't complain.
The story telling and relatability is amazing bro new subscriber
Thanks man. This, the retrospective on EA Sports MMA, my 'History Of' and 'Triangle X Squared O' series are all done in this style. You'll love them.
@@616Entertainment I watched that video before this one! I had EA sports MMA I had to be 9 or 10 years old man! Underrated game I actually loved the story mode but then again I was young and didn’t even realize it! Great Work man
That creepy smackdown music playing in the background though.
Hahaha
The first Boxing game I ever played was Knockout Kings 2000 PS1. Knockout Kings became Fight Night
Hopefully the warping of upper cuts when they should miss will be lessened or outright gone. I've simulated and replayed the Fight Night games a lot. It's a blink and you miss it but the gloves warp for a second when a fighter is hurt, especially in later rounds. I had a host of videos on the subject but was forced into taking them down.
...how were you forced into taking videos down?
Dude we just got to keep banging the shit out of that drum man lol gotta admit, I will replace all the UFC games in exchange for a new Fight Night bro, I know it sounds crazy but boxing was just a bigger part of my life growing up specially the Fight Night series. You’re insane, lol. Melissa Benoist is gorgeous.
Great video bro I miss fight night so much
You and me both, man.
I occasionally look on the playstation store just to see if there's any fight nights available... Sadly no luck.
I'm impressed at the restraint you had to not outright say "screw the UFC," because that's sort of where my mind's lingering right now, haha. Granted, that's not fair to fans of MMA, but I still like watching boxing more in the end. I've only played Champion, but it's a heck of a fun game and I agree a new FN game in this day and age would be totally bomber. Sadly, no one can count on EA for miracles... but I appreciate the fan interest you've drummed up!
I'm doing my best!
OMG I still have nightmares about fighting Isaac Frost. He is got to be in the top 10 hardest final bosses.
Dude, so insane. Outta control.
Great video ian! i remember when my co worker told me about the fight night games and told me how amazing they were. i was an old school boxing gamer - punch out, ready to rumble, evander holyfield boxing games on the genesis. i remember there was this amazing arcade boxing game called MoCap Boxing it was such an amazing game! but yea i really do they make a new fight night game sometime soon. Manny Pacquiao got me into boxing back in those days (well i guess the fact he's also filipino like me lol)
I love it. Love hearing how people go introduced to the games.
My PS3 is still plugged in just for Fight Night, EA MMA, and Red Dead Redemption.
A man of taste.
That background music there at the beginning...isn't that from wwf Smackdown?

@@616Entertainment funny how I remembered menu music from wayyyyyy back then lol
I got into the series way back in 1998 on the PS1 under its original name Knockout Kings. Getting to play as Muhammad Ali Joe Louis Sonny Liston and my favourite Evander 'The real deal' Holyfield was amazing as well as taking my created fighter all the way to the heavyweight title. If you never played it it's still worth a look
Glad someone else remembers Knockout Kings, the 2002 version was one of the first video games I ever played in my life.

11:28 sounds like a plan for a def jam fight for NY remastered edition too
By the way, curiously also an EA game
Yea, that one's had a lot of support for years, too.
The last boxing game I played was Punch Out 😂. Not a boxing guy but I grew up in the Mike Tyson era and because of my uncles, I caught a lot of his fights. I’m still waiting on EA to make another Def Jam game 😂
Oh man, that's another "I'll believe it when I see it."
Ian I’m surprised you know your boxing history bro! My sister and my mom love watching Canelo Álvarez boxing match and my aunt loves triple G (Gennady Golovkin). This episode was awesome!👏🏻

To my eyes , the greatest of the series...I remember discovering that game back in 2013 without knowing jack shit about boxing games. Just something to note, Ian: Modern “Madden” _really_ doesn’t represent football very well. You can run one play over and over again and get the same result, which is a fatal flaw in a game that’s supposed to resemble chess.
It's a football sim, my dude. I mean I COULD play UFC 4 and just throw exclusively head kicks and eventually catch my opponent. What we do as the player is up to us, not the game.
@@616Entertainment You remember how you could just abuse strikes and the test of strength in “WCW Nitro” and “Thunder,” respectively? Well, that same problem presents itself in “Madden” whenever you choose a stretch run play. The 2020 Madden Club Champion won with a punter at quarterback by abusing that strategy, for Pete’s sake.
Truth be told, there’s a lot to get to regarding the “Madden” series, but I can really kinda sum it up with this: People who learn football from “Madden” don’t really know football.

Great video man. I did not play these games but I think EA can´t put a Ultimate Mode in there so it is not that interesting for them. They could do 1 UFC and 1 Fight Night game every 2 years. Correct me if I am wrong with UM.
I mean they could figure out an Ultimate Team style scheme, they have it in UFC. I’ve never touched it, but it’s there.

My history with the Fight Night series is really just Round 2 on the Cube. It is a fun game and there is some neat ideas to it. I don't play many boxing games but I tend to gravitate to the Punch- Out series.

Here's to a boxing game future.
Here’s a couple of better questions.
What the hell happened to Road Rash?
What the hell happened to the Strike series?
Both longer than 10 years ago.
I mean those are indeed questions, but I don’t think they’re ‘better’ questions, lol.
I was and still a fight night fan, they need to remake or bring out a new one. Also we need another knockout kings game.
Knockout Kings IS Fight Night. It switched over along the way. =)
I don't know the logistics about it, but is it possible for a company to "copyright" a controller scheme?
Cause fight night games had perfected it, which makes me wonder if that is the case and no other company can use it in the same way.
Closest I've seen is that 'real boxing' franchise and both just aren't good at all.
I mean you can try and copyright whatever you want, ya know? But it wouldn't hold up. You could copyright the TERM 'Total Punch Control' or something, but the actual mechanic, I don't think so.

I also love Fight Night Round 2 on GameCube
I spent a year on off trying to beat Muhammad Ali with Small Boxers on the PSP fight night round 3 game
I love this.
@@616Entertainment he hit like a Train
I'd be going into The round breaks looking like my face had been minced
The Smackdown 2 menu music ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Good ear.
Seeing round 3 demo at walmart made me buy a 360 immediately in 2005\06
Revolutionary.
It’s also confirmed ESBC will be coming out in 2022
That is not confirmed officially in any way. Stay tuned to their twitter for real info. Lots of people out there spreading trash.
