I love these old school fish keepers and their fish rooms. No fancy looking tanks or expensive high tech filters. Just use what you have on hand and make what you need.
Wow! What a wealth of knowledge he has, such an asset to the hobby! I love how he freely shared his secret tips instead of guarding them like a trade secret!
Great video!!! Love all the knowledge he just gave out to all us nerds!!!!! I have had exprerience with hydra, never had any eat my fry but I had it bad a couple of times. What i used to get rid of it was some fenbendazole, i used one pack, which i think is like 8 grams or something mixed in 10 ounces of tank water and then used 1 ounce of it per 10 gallons, and it killed them within 25-30 minutes. By three days they were gone, couldnt even see the shriveled up ones. What i do know to keep from getting hydra is i rinse the BBS with R.O water or just some regular tap water and havent had any in a few months and i hatch and feed a couple of tablespoons of brine shrimp everyday, so i have tested it thoroughly. I hope this helped someone and sorry for all the typos and misspelled words;)
Videos like this are PRICELESS!!! You need to do more with him, pick that mans brain and get it on video. This guy probably forgot more about tropical fish than most people know, myself included. A+
Dan! What a treat this is! This is what I LOVE to watch! People who have been in the hobby for decades and know all the tricks of the trade! One of the best tours yet I've saw actually. Just for the experience hes had to learn this over the years, all the trails and testing he just gave to us in 30 mins! Seriously, Thank you! PS Ill be ordering those killifish soon I emailed you about! ~Justin~
What a delight! Where to begin? The plants, algae, partial bare bottom tanks, box filters....be still my heart. Love the small breeding containers, especially the Jack's Links one. I remember using anything I could get, as a kid, like that to grow out live bearer fry in. A few descriptives of Mr. Klinesteker might include: knowledgeable, amazing, and authentic. Oh and Master. He is one of a group that we have so few of left. Much to be learned from him. Take notes people. Thanks Dan, best vid I've seen in a long time.
Bob, I'm glad the vid resonated with you. I think Chase is a national treasure. If you get a chance to check out his website, there is much more info there.
I love watching the old school fish guys/gals!! Its not about aesthetics or what looks best, its ALL about which way is the most effective way to get my fish breed and fry hatched/born alive!! Using old milk jugs but can hatch fish better then a newbie with the best equipment money can buy!! So interesting to learn a whole bunch of new DIY ideas and setups!!!! Awesome video!
Rhombo barbs, I have 9 of them and looking into breeding them in the near future. The only fry I have now are those natural green swordtails which I rear in a 20 gallon green water outdoor tub and are fed daily with finely crushed pellets. The first batch is about a month old now. This video gives me a lot of insight into breeding those egg layers. Thank you Dan. P.S I have recently located a spot which may contain a population of wild Puntigrus partipentazona (not into regular domestic strain tiger barbs) . Cheers.
I hope to do more. I'm pretty far from most fish breeders (I live in Wyoming), but whenever I travel, I try to fit a few fishroom tours in. I've got a few more from this Grand Rapids trip that will be coming out shortly.
Wow. I just learned so much by watching this that I decided to watch it twice! Thank you for sharing! I am determined to breed these cherry barbs now! - Little Bobby
@@DansFish Thanks for remembering so many projects getting jumbled argh... havent isolated the neons they are thriving and havent noticed any spawning activities from them. They were very young when I got them they are peaceful and not skittish.... which took like 3 weeks..so Im reticent to move them until I know they are ready or gravid any tips???? In the same holding aquarium i have much younger threadfin rainbows and yesterday shockingly they did spawn. But I couldnt get the eggs in time... Anyway thank you so much for thinking of us we will keep you posted. your shipping method has been a major inspiration to my wife and our business also you always cover our favorite fish like aplocheilus blockii !!!!!!!! Thanx again!!!!!!!
i find that lemon tetra are actually extremely easy to breed if you have enough plants wood and rocks, and mine didnt get comfortable until i moved them from a 10g to a 20L , once i put them in a 20 and then later a 40B they started going crazy
WOW what an awesome video, His passion was clear to see he loved teaching and talking about the fish he has bred.. His Son needs to pick up and camera and create a RUclips channel asap.. make vids of each species! Thank you!
Hi, First of all congratulations to your videos. Nice job. I am surprised that he only uses suspended food and not live food for the fry at the beginning. I will try that too.
Yep, I had the same reaction. I thought live foods were necessary for a good yield on egg scatterer spawns. But, Chase knows his stuff, so it is definitely worth trying and seeing how it works for you.
This guy has bred 570 species of fish. I couldn't even name 570 species of fish and I certainly have not seen that many species. How can he manage to keep track of what he is doing?
I don't know all his fish sources, but the guy knows lots of folks and I'm sure he can source most things through his network. Grand Rapids has a lively fish-keeping scene with lots of hobbiests and breeders. I know he often gets fish from his local club, the GVAC. He also mentioned shopping at Water Colors Aquarium Gallery, a local store that I was lucky enough to tour. I'll drop that vid soon!
For barbs, I'd go with cherry or drape fin. Cherry's are easy to spawn and give you large numbers of eggs, but the fry are small. Drape Fins don't give as many eggs, but the fry are bigger. Both are easy to sex and hardy. For tetras, I'd say black neons, congos, and embers might be good places to start. That being said, almost all the common, inexpensive tetras and barbs that are bred on farms would be a fine choice. Gold barbs, rosey barbs, neon tetras...there is a long list.
@@DansFish thanks!! I really like my killis the most , also guppies and dwarf cichlids. I just spawned my first spawn of Iran was though. So that being said, i guess I love all fish!
