The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

John Sebastian is a nearly-forgotten master musician from the 60's who never received the recognition he deserved.
They did get some recognition
Not really given the recognition he deserves but certainly not forgoten. My father passed in 2014 and before he left he instilled a genuine appreciation for the man and his talents
Welcome Back Kotter

A very underrated group.
I loved the Spoonful...got sick of all that British invasion crap real fast...
@@thegreenbird795
Yes - Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks - absolute crap!
Properly rated band
They were not underrated at the time.
Is there a rating list of underrated bands. I'd be interested in seeing it.
The Spoonful is one of only two bands from the 60s to see their first seven singles make the Top 10.
Which is the other one? The Byrds?
Probably The Beatles.
@@Me97202 You're probably right , only other one might be the Beach Boys 🤔
The other one is obviously Tiny Tim

Music in 60’s were GROOVY
Yeah man. JFK, Vietnam, Civil Rights. Great decade to live in
Yes they weres
In those days , you can see the scene and put it up for looking. You dig man? Hippie lingo circa 1967 as I remember it. Give me that than Los Angeles Valley Girl Talk. And even the lingo from the beatnik era 1954 til 1963. I am a New Yorker who grew up in NYC in the 1960s Mad Men era!
Yes. Absolutely groovy!!
It sure was a Renaissance period!
I was about 14 yo when I first heard and got enchanted by this melody. Many years have gone, but I still love it.
I was maybe 10 or 11 or less, back in the 1990s. And since then I love this song.
What a great time.. westhampton beach.. seeing them at the speonk ballroom. Those were the days...
what a voice - what phrasing!
Great year. Hanging with the Spoonful in the Cafe Wha? in the Village. Working at a head shop on St Mark's Place in the East Village.
The song that came out the day I was due to be born, mum absolutely loved this, as a kid growing up, I was often called daydreaming dave, I love this so much, its my go to when I'm at a point of despair, it works, my mum knew what she was doing.♥️♥️
The Spoonful were fantastic.
Even I forget how great they are.
One of my Dads favourites, thinking of you as it plays .Never forgotten ❤
Been a favorite of mine for almost 58 years. Still is.
I like how he got Dr. Carl Sagan to play drums and he got Joey Ramone to time travel back to play guitar.
I always love watching Joe Butler behind the drums. He had such a good time. And Zal was forever clowning it up. Great band at a great time.
My all time favorite song. In 75 and I’ve heard a lot of great songs.
Nice glasses and sideburns. :)
Pork chops if you please.

@@rafaelword244 Lennon was a Lovin Spoonful, fan, in one interview says they are one of the top American groups, high praise indeed!
☁️ Lost in a daydream!☀️
John Sebastian wrote some really great songs. And These guys were really a great group. The Sixties saw so many groups, different . Great stuff.
First ! What a cool jam...
I love this band!!!❤❤❤
This is music that makes you feel so good. Cheers!
I was 8 years old…still love the song and the band at 64.
Paul McCartney was inspired by this song for "Good Day Sunshine"
Paul McCartney wrote this on a sunny day at John Lennon's house. It was influenced by the Lovin' Spoonful, who had a happy hit with "Do You Believe In Magic?"
I didn't know a Ramone was in the Lovin' Spoonful.
Lol
true
Nashville Cats featuring Joey Ramone 👍👍👍
I was looking for pro wrestling legend Razor Ramone
Timeless, Zal playing beautifully.
One of their best songs ever, alongside 'Summer In The City'.
Zal had a bakery in Kingston, Ontario 30 years later. I used to visit it and he'd almost always be there, having fun with the customers.
Pan Chancho was the name of it.
You do realize none of their instruments were plugged in.
@@stevenvicino8687
You need to look more carefully - the guitar leads are present and correct.
@@stevenvicino8687 this was a live performance
A classic of that Summer. A Massive Radio Hit that I heard on WEAM AM Radio, Northern Virginia while driving my white '61 Falcon with the red steel wheels.
But look at the Sunburst Les Paul John is playing~!!! Wow. It's worth a small fortune now, a real beauty isn't it?
Hey the Falcon today wouldn't be a joke..it would be worth some cash!
Damn, that 2" inch tape look though. Clean as can be.
So glad these episodes were retained on those tapes instead of the dreadful kinescope treatment so many other shows got. Or worse yet, thrown out altogether or reused.
I'm suprised how good it looks for early colour TV
Playing it live and playing it well!
Just Awesome! 60s Music was the Best!
Good lord! What happened to this craftsmanship?>??? Just beautiful!
Player on the left Zal, friends with his daughter in the 80s, she played guitar and she had that weird guild guitar he’s playing in the video
Guild Thunderbird
Remembering exactly where I was at when this song was popular. In the Army stationed at Ft. Huachuca, AZ taking AIT (Advanced Individual Training) during the Vietnam build-up from Pierre, SDak. Had a small transistor radio to help entertain us (living in a barracks) on the Fort. Thinking all the while "what am I doing here". Memorable!
2/7/67 - 2/6/70
Hooah
You and all the rest of us bro.
Thanks for serving
Happy 80th birthday John Sebastian!!!
Playing LIVE! Zal using volume swells via the volume knob in pre-pedal days gives a grand idea of how great his talents were.
He's even behaving himself here
John Sebastian and his natural vocal talent which is something that is sadly lacking today.
This performance is 100% live! Can't you tell it?
Its actually better than the studio recording.
it's 100% live
There must have been a bass player playing in the background and not on the screen.
I hear no bass, other than Sebastian's thumb-picked bass line on his guitar. This one looks & sounds more legit live than most of their lip-synced tv performances.
@@mjm0tube Yeah, I guess you are correct. Sebastian was thumb-picking the bass line on his guitar in this clip. That requires a lot of talent! I am wondering if on the original recording, was the bass line thumb-picked on guitar by Sebastian, or was it played on electrical bass by the bass player? I believe there was some electric bass added to the original recording. I believe that the instrumental arrangement of the two guitars working together is excellent in both this live version and the original recording.
I used to love sitting around the campfire playing this number and "Do You Believe in Magic?" Years later, me and a couple old band mates got together and did "Darlin Be Home Soon" in what would turn out to be our final live performance (I moved away and put the guitar down. Not sure why, but it was 10 years ago and I haven't picked it up since so I'm calling it our last hurrah). John Sebastian is one of the best song writers from the 60s who never seems to get mentioned. To be honest, I'm guilty of forgetting him myself from time-to-time. So, let me take this opportunity to compliment the man by simply saying your stuff is really fun to play dude. Still waiting for my heart to get stolen by some mousy little girl though. 😉
un titre immortel , magnifique!!
Forgot how young we all were when this came out, still sounds good and brings back many pleasurable memories.

"It was really very much a nod to The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Daydream, the same traditional, almost trad-jazz feel. That was our favorite record of theirs. Good Day Sunshine was me trying to write something similar to Daydream. One of my all time favorite Bands im 70 now and the songs are still awesome
And they will always be awesome no matter how old you are, that's how good their music is, timeless.
When music was real.
Absolutely brilliant song, timeless.
My all time favorite Spoonful song. Song peaked at #2 for two weeks in April, 1966. I was just 11 years old but it was a great spring with music like this.
So much pop in the 1960s was nostalgic for the 1920s-30s
The Les Paul Sebastian is playing is worth over a quarter million dollars!
Do you think that maybe this is THE Les Paul that was later refinished at the Gibson factory per the request of Rick Derringer, and later purchased by Clapton, and ultimately given to Harrison?!!
@@dwodo21 No, buts it’s a real sunburst, not a reissue.

John was a trendsetter. He was wearing those round framed glasses long before John Lenon or John Denver.
Only Johns were allowed to wear those glasses
He also started the tie die craze.
Check him out at Woodstock.
It's so nice to see this - really LIVE - when so much of the Lovin' Spoonful's "live" videos taht are up are lip synced.
At 1:20 Zal recognizes how the tempo of the song is being sped up too fast and mouths, "this faster here?". I think our normally reliable drummer was in a bit of a hurry. :)
He was in his own pocket!🤣
I was wondering what Zal had said, he looked perplexed 🤔
....and, you KNOW the 'Sullivan' people probably thought he said sumpthin' dirty....The Doors were on previously at the time, ya KNOW! ...ha-HAA!! >breakonthroughto....
I don't know what he's saying, but it definitely starts with "the ..". Play it back at .25 speed.

Now known as the "Sebastian" Les Paul, it's worth about a half million today. John been kicking his own arse for years for having sold it

And all done live folks.
Nothing but totally cool!
Great music is it
One of my all time favorite songs, just exceptional. They are also my all time favorite bands.
John Sebastians smooth singing and impeccable rhythm guitar, along sides Zallys lead work which is subjectively the greatest of all time, and Steve Boones fantastic bass playing, and Joe Butlers spectacular singing and great drumming.
I am 15 by the way.
Nice! You will live a long happy and prosperous life with this music!📻🎙️
George Harrison blows Zally out of the water, Miles.
@@fshoaps You really think so?
What bass playing? I saw none.
@@RedArrow73 Steve Boone may not be playing bass is this performance, but the studio version has bass playing. Along with practically all their songs.
...The 'Thinking-Man''s Monkees, right HERE! ...ha-HAAA!! ....severely underrated group; SO many classic bands were coming at us in 1967 (The Doors, most notably), that these 'Guys next Door', suffered from the 'regular-ness' of their image...but, the Songs, man, the SONGS!! .....clearly, they earned a spot in the Rock canon....so, where's their spot, in the RRHOF!?
Nashville Cats is the best song after listening many times.
And Night Owl blues
Such memories 😂😂😂😂
So who else in here discovered this song after watching the Hanna Barbera Country Classics VHS compilation? Just me....?
Also, I have loved this song ever since first discovering it as a child. Such a mellow, delightful little tune.
When the times and music were good!
John is totally stoned! Look at those eyes. 😎
There's a clip of the Lovin' Spoonful playing "Summer in the City" (actually lip-synching) on RUclips. Sebastian looks just as stoned in that video as he does in this one.
Now featuring Carl Sagan on drums
Wow! Cant believe it over 50 years ago!
This is so cool.
What a great live version, love this!
Nice version, but not life dude.....
@@bertvanstaveren3178 sure it is. It certainly isn't a studio recording.
First things, first I missed this song... 🤣🤣🤣
This show was recorded on March 19th, 1967. John Sebastian is on lead vocals. 🙂
Just a couple of months later and this group would soon collapse and then break up two years later. Sad as these guys could’ve gone further together.
Never a bad daydream to rock me some John Sebastian!
I like the guitar parts - especially Zal's!
Reminiscent of Harrison's tremolo effect on a few of the Beatles' songs from 1965.
@@duffbaker9554 Which songs in particular?

John Sebastian is playing one of the most collectable, valuable, vintage guitars, a 1959 gibson les paul standard.
Gordon Kennedy owns it now...he didn't buy it from john directly, he bought it from a reseller .
Sooooooo good 👍🏽
The people of this time didn't have any smartphones or internet but god dammit they had music, something I'd trade my technology for any day!
