As a lifelong bassist, and a Queens, N.Y. City born and raised guy- now in my about to be in my 70's, The Spoonful, to me, were THE quintessential New York City band. Culture. A peak
This song was one of my favorites whrn I was a kid. It really is a beautiful songthat has aged so well. Even the screaming jerk and Zal's antics couldn't ruin this performance.
Zal was eventually fired because of his clowning on stage. John said Zal hated that song.
I think it represents the band's turning point. But his antics fit for this particular moment. Like a final send-off.
@@MCEntertainmentAUST He HAD to be up front.
@@jamesmorton7597 indeed. But for this clip, it kinda works. I can see how that sort of goofiness was unsustainable in the long run, though.
Sebastian does look annoyed at Zal.
Magnificent Masterpiece from Master Musicians, very beautiful piece of music, fan for 60 years
How could it be? I grew up at the pinnacle of something wonderful! This is simply another venue to demonstrate how superb this rock and roll life has been. I can't begin to name all the emotions, circumstances, events and people that these songs carry back to my heart. Thank you.
One their best hits
The framing of the drummer and Sebastian on the last Verse is wonderful.
Oh yes..Joe Butler had a wonderful voice that was not heard enough.
and a GREAT drummer he is.
I like Joe as part of the orchestra.
gave me goosebumps when horns started
Great music, great times, we were feeling optimistic for a while
John sings like an angel .Love him.
Along with Paul Simon, a poet for a youthful America. Song after song. What a sound.
This was always one of my favourite as a teenager at the time- my wife and I were just saying after listening to this today that the ‘60s were the best of the best for great groups and the greatest music.
As a lifelong bassist, and a Queens, N.Y. City born and raised guy- now in my about to be in my 70's, The Spoonful, to me, were THE quintessential New York City band. No other band seemed to capture the vibe, and complexity of those times quite the same way. I bought every single they released. Their music is timeless. Nothing now even comes close... it's all just formulaic poppycock that sounds so banal and typical. Only a few artists have come close in decades. I'm glad I'm old, I got to see the best bands in music history, make that history.
My brother married to Darlin Companion.
🎶 I believe they were good enough to play instruments on the recordings.
I'm from Bayside, n same age...you are so right..we really saw it all✌️🙂🕉
73 Y.O. Bronx boy here... "Summer In The City " Quintessential NYC song . Genius production. Jack hammer solo. Got the City vibe like no other song@@people4peace999
@@jamescalifornia2964 - Good point. A lot of bands were told that studio session musicians would handle their parts, and that some of them could sit it out, and need not play.
Great music during these years!
WOOOOOOOOW!
Absolutely fantastic
I'm 99% sure it Live
I am fascinated by the contrast of the youthful faces of The Lovin' Spoonful and the aged countenances of the orchestra.
See "Touch Me" by The Doors on Smothers Brothers for more. haha
My god, these goosebumps just can't be shaken
My favorite Lovin' Spoonful song.
My little brother loved this song. I'm learning to play it on his baritone uke. RIP Benny, Darling Be Home Soon. 😢
Love the build-up....how the horns and strings beautify this song!
Amazing. That sounded even better than the record which sounds wonderful. Plus you get to see John just doing what he does. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this classic timeless performance of The Spoonful. The last hurrah before Zally's departure.
Thank God. Grandstanding A-hole who did his best to ruin this performance. He soon had to quit the band and flee to Canada for other Ahole acts of his.
Well, it's a shame he didn't depart before horsing around with this beautiful song.
@@elspencer6334 .....I've heard he was horsing around because he really didn't like the song or the direction the band was going in those days. By May of '67 (This show was Jan. '67) he was no longer with the band.
Yeah, Zal’s departure didn’t happen soon enough. He f’d up more than one TV appearance with his douche clown act.
Love 60s 70s music the best and love the songs they sang in the 60s and 70s . What a great band of that era !
This song touches my heart.
i wasnt born till 1970 and on the other side of the world in Australia so i didnt find this song till around 2000, id heard the lovin Spoonful song The Summer in the City but didnt know who they were. So very grateful for You Tube, you can find songs you would never normally discover .... anyway this song is awesome
The cover from SLADE Alive is AMAZING
I emailed John Sebastian many years ago asking what he thought of Slade's version, he replied! Nice, kooky but nice 🎉
One word,”TIMELESS “
Absolutely love this song especially when the strings 🎻appear then the horns🎺
They were a great band. I remember their songs really well.
What a great band.
Perpetually a magnificent song. Instrumental was sent God Almighty
i forgot just how beautiful this song is - at the time it came out it was the like the air we breathed - it's good to see a drummer so into a song
One of my all-time favorite songs. Thanks for posting.
I had the privilege of seeing the “Lovin Spoonful”. Standing right at the stage. They had our attention Thanks for this wonderful memory! ✌️❤️
Wow ... 👍
COME ON FOLKS, THIS IS MUSIC!!!60S AND 70S NON STOP ON MY DINOSAUR CD PLAYER IN MY AUTO.I MEAN NON STOP TALENT OF WORDS AND MELODIES. JOHN WAS A VILLAGE MAN IN MANHATTAN N.Y.
HIS FATHER WAS A GIFTED MUSICIAN. I WENT TO WOODSTOCK BUT THE LOVIN SPOONFUL I DIDNT CATCH.
THE SONG THAT I PLAYED UPON MEETING MY WIFE IN THE 70S, WAS--YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE SO NICE.
JOHN,I TIP MY HAT TO YOU AND THE BAND.#### MAKE A COME BACK WITH A KNOCKOUT SONG.I KNOW YOU STILL HAVE IT.
Where did those great days go! Those of us who lived those times were truly blessed. Songs like this bring back the happy times for just a moment.
Bill, look at your kids and grandkids for where it went.
I was a 6th grader when this song hit along with Light My Fire.
Morrison and JS are two of the greatest the US ever produced.
John Sebastian wrote such beautiful songs. Love him.
Amazing clip by an AMAZING band. Not many realize John Sebastian wrote nearly all the songs and that he churned out THREE Top Ten albums and the soundtrack to a Woody Allen film all in like a 12-month period!
And the title song to the film, "You're A Big Boy Now".
He also did a commendable performance at Woodstock, considering he was asked to do a fill-in set only minutes before due to a rain delay before Santana's set.
Pure gold, how I long for those days!!!!!
That some beautiful stuff right there.
Just discovered this song when I was hate watching a country vs folk music video, lol. This song rocks. Surprised I never heard it before, but it's way before my generation.
What a wonderful live performance! Great song.
Rock band gone orchestra! That's why Jeff Lynne ( of ELO) was such a Genius.... he did the same thing!
Thank you for sharing! 💖
He carried over the earlier tradition and made it portable...
I was a teenager such a fan of the Spoonful. This is a song that first gave me a sense of what it felt like to miss and love someone. "It's ok to shoot the moon"!
Who is the guy in the top hat , one of the links?
@@gregsmith6380 that's Zal Yanovski on guitar and top hat.
