I don't think half the people are getting the concept of this. It's just a badminton centre 98% of the time. They have planned infrastructure to be able to convert to a LAN setup with a day's work for events. It's not going to be a badminton centre by day, and a LAN centre by night 24/7. The amount of work it would take to swap back every evening is insane. He wanted a badminton centre, he bought one. It happens to double as a nice place to host LAN events, that's it. It's a bit like having your wedding at a location that isn't a wedding chapel, they're doubling up as a wedding location, but it's not the primary business.
Honestly It seems like it would be a great all around con/expo center as well so that might be a part of the plan with the LAN being the main use case for the design and specifications.
They can also use it for company events other than lan events. They brought up go carts and stuff like that. This will be much cheaper than renting a place out if u already own a building of this size within the company

Hey Linus! Remember atmospheric discharges protection! You're going to have a lot of expensive electronic stuff inside a structure with metal ceiling. You'll need a lightning discharge analysis on the structure, and a surge protection system in the main and distribution power panels. All of the previous will also need an appropriate grounding and bonding.
My dude is diversifying his income streams like Amouranth when she bought gas stations & 7/11's.... except with badminton and an arcade... Oh yes. The power needs. I can still remember, a little LAN Party in Denmark (The Party 1996 in Aars, when we blew a main fuse. It was in the evening of the 26th of December, if i remebber corect. There was a little over 3000 people at The Party. The big problem, with replacing the fuse, is that the fuse was in the local transformer station, so we were slightly guilty of a tiny blackout in the area (think like 10.000-15.000 residences), until a new fuse could be transported from Germany and installed 4-6 hours later.
@@MichaelSanAngelo We have, but where and when is very important. 1. It was in the Chrismas days, so a lot of people was re-heating the leftovers in the oven. 2. Aars is a relative small town, and the biggest power hungry place, was the local exhibition centre. 3. The Parly, was the 2. largest Demoscene in Europe, and the power demand was insane, and requied power planning and monitoring during the event.
If you blow a fuse in your house thats on you. If you blow a fuse at a power station causing a blackout that’s on the power company. I bet you were a legend for ages and blowing a transformer probably made the night even more memorable!
@@BassRacerx We somehow "forgot" to tell anyone in the City about is. Even McDonald 11km/6,8miles away, was also hit by this blackout. It was close to 10.000 homes, and the blackout lasted 4-6 hours. The slogan for the next event was "Batteries not included"

A solution for keeping the reverb when playing badminton while still sound treating the room as well as integrating a PA system would be to look at the special audio solutions from DB Technologies. Meyer sound also has something similar. I was at NAMM this year and their demo of their special audio engine was very cool. They had rented a small room in the convention center so naturally it was sound isolated via the airwalls. But what they had done is placed a couple microphones around the room and pumped those through their engine to give the room a more natural reverb. This made us feel as if we were in a more relaxed setting. Once they turned that off the room and noise floor fell silent. It was too quiet with it off that you wouldn’t want to even make a noise. You guys could use this to still sound treat the building but then via their technology, you could still have a natural sounding space and even change the way the room sounds. Thus keeping the whacking sound of the birdy when playing badminton but then having an entirely different sound for the room when having a lan party. Plus you also check off the PA requirement.
I know you're shitposting but I'm genuinely curious if someone has kept track of the value of all the stuff Linus has dropped on camera over the years lmao.
I would recommend to get in touch with a local (or not, a big , out of town one might be an option too) stage tech/touring production company. They basically deliver on your problem (big multiuse , sports space needing a quick turnaround to a totally different setup) daily on tours or in local venues. Maybe not for hardware, but you could really get great insight on effective soft skills of managing and planning such turnarounds, effective storing schemes and labeling etc. Also please please make a video on Dans work on the PA Setup. Dante is fascinating.
Not just that, this would be an amazing space for smaller cons and events. I'm thinking like model train clubs or geeky watch parties and school photography/film excurtions.
@@profwaldone I've been to table top RPG cons that were in smaller venues, so this would be great for those, too. The other side would be awesome for miniature wargaming. Some of the naval wargames I've seen really benefit from large amounts of floor space.

i doubt anyone from LTT will see this but worth a shot, as nucking futs as this this looks y'all might need a stronger projector than the LS12000 for the projector wall idea, if i'm not mistaken it's around 2700 lumens which isn't really enough for that usecase. I work a lot with projectors for concerts, conferences and other such stuff and ideally we'd use 16k or 21k projectors for any projection over about 4 meters in width. I can give a good tip, the old guard of bulb projectors are quickly going out of fashion, you might be able to snag up something like the Barco HDX for a reasonable price, 4k resolution and 19k lumen. Brand new they'd be something like 20k dollars, right now they go for 8k or less. You can also set up remote control over ethernet or even internet which is pretty neat. There are probably others out there but i know this one because it's one of many types of projector i work with and they're relegated to more and more niche roles. Anyways looks sick guys, wish i had a youtuber near me who could set up something like this
you can also overlap multiple small projectors. I've seen it done in big malls. If they already have multiple units of it or have got a deal then that's their option.
They will have sufficient lighting control, a 1080p projector would be plenty fine for a game like smash even on a wall that big. I have done it before several times, outside would be tough, but inside is perfectly fine.
Former AV installer/current house tech for lower mainland theatre: Dante is great but at scale you’ll want to use Dante Domain Manager with VLANs or you’ll have a multicast storm. The problem is that won't deliver enough power, the typical gaming computer has an 800W+ power supply plus monitors and accessories. He's got it set up for 10 stations in at least 7-8 locations and 8 stations in 5 locations. Thats 8k watts (66.6666A) on 10 and 6400W (53A) on 8 stations. You can't just simply plug in a bunch of power hungry gaming PCs to a 50A receptacle and cross your fingers.
@@mattgayda2840 a Lan party pc is more like 400W power supply. Where talking 4060 with a ryzen 5 cpu level PC top, that is barely 250W peak load including MB, storage and RAM. For the PA system/ sound system, look into a QSC core with a touchscreen for control. It uses Dante. You can make announcements schedule events or sound clips. Tie it in to your fire alarm system to mute everything in the event a fire alarm is activated. Zone control separate audio inputs and outputs. It also has gpio and relay control. So you can control projectors and powered screens.

Just a thought, but for that narrow (now less so) network room, since it's so tall, couldn't you like make it double decker? Like build a mini second floor in there with a ladder? UPS downstairs, then a metal grate floring, and the rack above? There's for sure a way to do it to code if the upper level is sitting on steel structure attached to the floor. You could have a similar setup with a terminal "downstairs" and the UPS in the back by the far wall, then removable ladder to the "upstairs" where the rack lives. It would be tricky for videos, but assuming you only have one of building your "Crazy Split-level Server Room" and never need to again, I'm sure you could manage. It could be a really cool video and actually a decent idea for industral space network rooms so they can take up less space. Just think of the thumbnail Linus: you hanging from a ladder with a server over your shoulder, and it or both you and it, are falling? Classic.
These videos are scripted, and he's by far the most experienced host on the team. I don't doubt that he's really excited and passionate about this, but a good amount of his on-camera reactions and dialogue can be acted or at least exaggerated for the sake of entertainment.
@UnjustifiedRecs It's not immediately obvious to a lot of people, man. The comment seemed to imply that Linus is just acting differently from everyone else due to ADHD. He might actually have ADHD (idk if it's true), but he is usually playing a character on youtube in order to make the video flow better.
I'm sure Dan is aware, but as an AV integrator I would strongly recommend VLanning out the entire audio system from the rest of the network environment or else the Dante broadcast traffic is going to absolutely murder your speeds, unless you feel like dealing with a ton of IGMP snooping, which I'm sure you don't.
Good call on the Dante format for audio. I did a couple of Stadiums in my day with CobraNet and they were super finicky about the master clock and the switch over between master and backup was not a seamless (or reliable) as advertised. I know it is old tech, but that is why you can get some really good deals - which you pay for elsewhere... I am sure you know this, but have the Dante on its own vlan - while I have nothing but good things to say about it, I am still very careful that nothing messes with PTP (it can be a little fragile, so a solid dedicated network is what it likes). Looking forward to see the whole thing finished! Do the video transport/routing/switching with NDI. Seriously nothing in the video space comes close to it.
Absolutely should have it's own Vlan, while technically it can work as standard network traffic, if it's considered a core infrastructure, I wouldn't want it to go down if you start running into issues. Plus if there's a plan to use a stage, some desks and stage boxes do odd things to have gain control that could mess with other traffic
Honestly, if it were me, this would be setup entirely separate from the normal network. Have separate cables, switches, extra jacks to plug into, everything besides the WAN link. Keep the core things like PA, Point of Sale, event equipment, entirely separate. That way if things go wrong, say a network crash, they can still get on and be like, "sorry, my bad guys" and keep people informed of updates
I think this presents a nice opportunity to organically display the problem with too much echo/reverb in a building. Sure, most of us likely know what the problems are but to have a video actually show how bad it can be and progress through the process of correcting it would be neat. Whole room water cooling but WhaleHaus sound dampening instead!
As someone in building design and engineering I love hearing about your design processes for your space! Especially if floor plans and renders are included!
This is going to be an amazing video series - I can just tell. Please make more! I'd love to see the people putting in the network infrastructure do update videos on how they've overcome obstacles & such (possibly on floatplane?)
Would sure be interesting to see how gonna deal with stuff like port security while having so many ethernet / fibre runs that are going to have alternating uses. I've not actually used their favored Ubiqity stuff, mostly learned on older cisco stuff which had a somewhat limited amount of configs could save regarding turning off or on each port, or what protocols to allow or block per port, etc.
My friend, Linus knew all the videos he wanted to make about the badmington center even before the idea of building a badmington center came to his mind.
@@benwu7980 To do a long storry short, we're looking at implementing PacketFence as a NAC which will allow us to automatically put our devices in the right VLAN. The default VLAN will most likely be the "Event" one which will allow a user to get to a captive portal and access Event specific resources, like the gaming servers and LANCache.
Love these infrastructure vlogs... Along with a public address system add in a screens to display information, helps the hard of hearing and allows the information to be digested in multiple forms
My friends and I like to play badminton, but I hate counting the score. As an engineer, I always wondered how to do it. I haven't found any lightweight device to help with that. I found a smartwatch app, but the little touchscreen just sucks at sports. I think a button in the ground on the edge of the playing field would be best. And so that someone can't press it with their foot, I'd make a tiny hole for the button that would be big enough only for a badminton rocket. If you want an automatic counting system, you still need buttons available to correct system errors for each court, and as close as possible.
I love that Linus is finding a way to bring the things he loves to more people. As someone the same age I'll never have his level of success but I'm happy someone like him has found it.
I kept asking this myself too but then I thought of the times I've played in backyards and what not and it is an extremely fun game with low barrier of entry. Honestly if it was more readily available around me (USA) I would probably be into it.
I can think of another type of event that needs the SAME exact infrastructure as a LAN party: a demoparty. There used to be some in North America, but they're exceedingly rare there now. They take place in Europe several times a year, attracting up to about 1000 people. Computer artists - graphics, programming, music, having competitions among each other. The complete size of demoscene is a mere several thousand people, it has emerged as art spin-off of software cracking and piracy scene in the 80s, but has completely divorced itself from it by now. Word of note: demoparty lasts friday evening till sunday evening or monday noon, and demosceners prefer sleeping on the floor in their sleeping bags. The storage room where you store the LAN desks should do nicely as a sleeping area.
Well actually biggest of them are combined LAN and demoparty, such as Assembly Summer that's being arranged here in Helsinki. It's actually a nice concept, I ended up becoming a graphics programmer thanks to seeing weird cool stuff on the screen when I was 15 and obviously mostly interested about the LAN aspects of the party.
I still remember scene releases that had demos alongside their cracks/keygens/custom installers. That would have been like ten years ago at max. Of course back then there was already an established demo art scene that didn't do cracking anymore, but it's not like they forgot their roots. Nowadays, though, I am afraid you're right. In the age of repackers you hardly get to see any untouched scene releases at all anymore. And since there are pretty much no more serious crackers left, and those that are don't have anything to do with the old demo scene anymore. You can barely even call them crackers since there is no more competition whatsoever, a lot is done through automation and serious stuff like Denuvo gets tackled by not even a handful of people per decade, most of whom seem to have significant personality disorders. Currently there is no one at all anymore doing it if I'm informed correctly. It wasn't great to see the tradition from the Old Guard to what we have now, but thankfully tradition was carried on long enough for me to experience it, even though I was just sent into kindergarten in the actual 90s where the demo scene peaked.
@Khad-zw4yz It is a hobby, but also isn't useless. It's probably something employees can use if they want, but like they said in th video will be a LAN centre/badminton place for tournaments and whatnot. I guess you can say it's a passion project which there's nothin wrong about.
Your subtitles on this video are from the electroboom video for me, not sure why. just a heads up. No I haven't watched that one today so it shouldnt be cache.

I’ve done some basic electrical installations at industrial locations. I have the feeling those 2 panels of breakers are not enough juice to handle the amount of gear they’ll try to power for a LAN and entertainment. Not to mention those long runs of cable will struggle if they don’t use some heavy gauge wires in those cables. I understand it will be used most of the time as a badminton location, but it does seem like a lot. I would consult an electrician with a good amount of experience dealing with heavy duty applications, not just lighting and basic warehouse installations.
Don't worry, not everything was shown in the video. There is literally 2 whole new 200A panels with 75Kva transformers getting installed to support the load for those power plugs. This was all planned by an engineering firm.
I'd love to see the entire set of drawings but I'd like to point out the one thing I was able to see on the drawings. The POS stations need quadruplex receptacles for each station. A duplex means that if the POS setup isn't just a tablet (or otherwise monolithic) then both receptacles will be occupied (terminal & monitor). Add in a receipt printer and you already need a power strip. And any good design should not rely on a day 1 power strip. There are no lighting drawings shown but good lighting controls are KEY to smooth (and easy) operation of any sporting facility or event space. I would love to see the lighting drawings! Finally, I would ensure that you adequately prepare for LAN expansion - conduit, panel placement, distribution (proper amount of breaker spaces in your MDP for example) so that it isn't a nightmare when/if you decide to expand the LAN functionality.

I don’t think Dante will help with your STI (speech transmission index) It only uses Bose pro speakers though but can help with choosing where to put sound absorbing materials.
Dante is just a lossless AV over ip protocol. In this case, they are just using it in place of running speaker cable and using large 70/100v amps. The Dante speakers would also be POE. Dante also allows them to tap into the audio system from any wall jack on the same VLAN. As for improving the STI, that would likely be handled with DSP by the audio processor.

They’ll host e-sports events as well possibly
Now it's a write off.

Also fibre to fibre on each table and server

Does Denmark not have main breakers or fuses at the building's electrical panel? That's pretty epic to blow a fuse at a substation, ngl.
@@MichaelSanAngelo
We have, but where and when is very important.

At this point Linus will have spent more money than the items he's dropped

I would recommend to get in touch with a local (or not, a big , out of town one might be an option too) stage tech/touring production company. i doubt anyone from LTT will see this but worth a shot, as nucking futs as this this looks y'all might need a stronger projector than the LS12000 for the projector wall idea, if i'm not mistaken it's around 2700 lumens which isn't really enough for that usecase.

Classic.

Problem is that LTT being LTT they will use unifi again. Which is not a too good idea for AV stuff x.x
CC is messed up guys

The closed captions appear to be from the electro boom video FYI.
I want in, how do I get in the loop?
Trying to revive Lan gamming in 2024. It's hard to tell if Linus is mad or genius.
Generating multiple revenue streams for your buildings is always a good idea
I'm guessing the plan is for the badminton courts and gym to pay for the building, so the LANs don't *have* to make money.
WHALE Lan says everything you need to know...
Badminton centre by day, LTT E sports events, lan parties.
Pop up call centre by night?
PUBG eSports does it really well every year... huge cash prizes and intel as the main sponsor
Linus pls don't go broke i need someone to review hardware that i can't afford
lab not even done and a new big projekt starting, damn nice!
I think this is his personal funds rather than LTT funds.
It's been in the works for a few years now
@Khad-zw4yz It is a hobby, but also isn't useless. It's probably something employees can use if they want, but like they said in th video will be a LAN centre/badminton place for tournaments and whatnot. I guess you can say it's a passion project which there's nothin wrong about.
Gotta say: Get Dan his BICSI cert already, with the scope of infra buildouts you all are doing it's gotta be getting close to essential at this point
Turn on the captions and thank me later. "I knew if I believed in Santa, his elf would show up."

For the LAN center you should also put IR lights up to help with Quest 3 and other Inside Out tracking VR headsets.
Don't those have their own IR lights?
@@Atlessathe controllers have it lights for tracking but if ir lights were installed everywhere the cameras in the Quest could track without the need for the lights to be on (Ir lights aren’t visible to the naked eye)
Other IR camera systems for depth sensing like on the iPhone, Kinects, and Realsense cameras rely on active illumination where the camera generates a special light pattern which wouldn't work properly if there was too much ambient IR illumination
@@nathancreates Oh good point, I'm pretty sure the first gen Oculus Rift does the same.
(at least there's a funny 'purple' LED pattern all over it when filmed with my friend's phone camera. Preeeetty sure those are IR.)
@@Atlessa thats more about letting the external cameras track the rift headset's position, the quest series uses inside out tracking, where the cameras are on the device. ir illumination is needed for the tracking to work in minimal light environments.
Gamers that play badminton is an overlap that is far more niche than I think Linus is willing to admit.
I never knew I needed a badminton episode from a tech channel until today. This channel is slowly conditioning me to enjoying logistics videos. Who woulda thunk
Dans job title really should be "dooer of things"
i’ve been following you since 2008 on RUclips, back in the NCIX days… I’m very proud of you young Linus

Finally, I would ensure that you adequately prepare for LAN expansion - conduit, panel placement, distribution (proper amount of breaker spaces in your MDP for example) so that it isn't a nightmare when/if you decide to expand the LAN functionality.
they could just go for an ipad and a wireless card reader for the POS system.
For shared bathrooms in a large space. Optimism Brewing in Seattle at :
1158 Broadway St. Has possibly thr best renovation of public bathrooms.
Each stall is a separate room. *With A DOOR!* Then there is a large circular sink everyone washes there hands at.
You get privacy, anyone can use any of the stalls. No more lopsided ques. Higher rate of hand washing, as you have to walk past Everyone else washing there hands.
I friggin love that building.
Oh, and the beers great too.
This is how things work in Northern Europe. Big shared sink/mirror area and then private single person bathrooms just off.
I've seen some schools and grocery stores here in the US starting to do that. It's infinitely better for not a ton of extra space.
Great idea! Tbh I'd settle for no stall gaps. Hanging a tp curtain under time pressure is... not ideal. If you know, you know :(
Hey fellow Seattleite and fan of well designed spaces. This is a great suggestion and I hope that they can make it happen as I agree on Optimism having one of the best mixed gender bathrooms I've been in. There are also a couple others in Seattle that are good. The Burke Museum has them and there's one in the SeaTac Airport, but that one's more utilitarian where the others are much more aesthetically pleasing.
Shared bathrooms are terrible. I feel sorry for the women loool having men dropping fat shits and massive farts next to them and definitely pissin all over the bowl
Put some stairs in the IT room so you can get above the office, all the room above the office could be server racks. Put a hole in the side with a winch and you can simple raise it up there.
300 copper drops and several fibers. Bless up. Currently PM/PCing a Low voltage project that has 1700 network drops, 650 speaker drops and both MM and SM fiber between Network closets. Only 2 main closets. Badminton seems like a great part time gig
Can't wait to see an Amazon sized warehouse for LAN. Imagine not being able to see the end to the computers.
This is not even close to the size of an Amazon warehouse lol. Those things are closer to a million square feet or more depending on the region. Absolutely massive buildings that stretch insanely far.
Just set the Guinness world record for largest nerd basement🤓
But why only badminton? Why not half-pickleball?

I think the captions might be for another video?
For arcade machines I cannot recommend Killer Queen enough. Its probably a pg rated 5 vs 5 game thats super simple to learn but has enough depth to support league play across north america
+1, best bar game I've played in SF hahaha
WOOOO ANOTHER BIG PROJECT THAT MEANS MORE VIDEOS!!! I hope these pay for the projects, I love when you do a series of videos making a thing better. I get real sad when there’s no part x to a project for months
This project isn't meant to be for videos it's to be a massive commercial badminton center open to the public
They don't need to pump out more videos. One the issues from the last scandal was quantity over quality.
@@Hotlog69 But more videos about the update of the progress would be interesting as they can share their challenges and how they solved them. Probably one update every 3-6 months should be fine. No need to have a video on it every single months like his house update.
I would watch a full video explaining the inception of this idea, and the economics of it!
The dreams we had as kids, Linus just makes them reality ❤
Is there really this big of a demand for badminton courts in Canada/North America?
Probably not. More than likely any potential ROI is far enough out that more pure capitalism focused ventures wouldn't even consider it, and I suspect the whale lans will ultimately bring in more money than badminton. But, Linus loves badminton, and he's successful. Passion projects don't need immediate ROI, and at some level this is probably a "be the change you want to see" sort of thing.
I think Linus is also uniquely set up to make something like this succeed, with them already being a media and tech company. Not having to outsource other companies for advertisement, maintenance and installation saves a lot of money
No but buying property in Canada will guarantee you a load of money in the future if you decide to sell it
There might not demand for more badminton courts but if he has the best ones then he might steal the demand from competing venues. Parking didn't look great though.
sometimes it just takes one person with a vison to change a community , In Prince George decades a go, an Aussie family built, what was one of the premiere gymnastics facilities in Canada, 2 Olympians were coaching there. The positive effect on the community was almost instantaneous.. Be it ski racers training in the off season, or ids becoming competitive gymnasts that one time would never had had the opportunity, a single person, with a vison, can make a community explode.. This feels like a growth point for the the sporting and computing/gaming worlds in Vancouver, I suggest that the next facility you look at would be a game dev school, bring in people to teach proper game design... bring in some of those thousands of professionals GenX ers fired from places like Bioware and bungie.
I already feel the pain of licensing all that Dante
As its AES67 there is always a way :P
Not to mention the Dante hardware tax. Surely they'd have to purchase Shure ULX level system when it comes to wireless microphones alone.
@@KacperZielinski Not necesarily, we can just get Analog dante audio interface and use any normal devices. The Dante licenses are included with all the hardware we're sourcing.
It's crazy how far Linus went, to get his own personal Badminton center xD
Captions on this video (at least for the first minute) seem to be from a completely different video.
Nope It's The Whole Video I've Checked Hopefully They Fix It Soon
You can 3d model the area and “see” how it would sound before you install speakers. Bose professional has software for this that is free to use. I don’t think Dante will help with your STI (speech transmission index)
It only uses Bose pro speakers though but can help with choosing where to put sound absorbing materials.
@@spartan5280 Sometimes there’s just not much a DSP can do to help STI. It definitely won’t stop the echo in the room that’s what the sound absorption materials are for. And just covering the entire ceiling in it might work but what if you knew that covering 50% of the ceiling would work just as fine, or maybe you might need to cover an additional wall as well. I love what Dan does in these videos and I’m just throwing in extra tools to help.
Also seeing coverage patterns and sound transitions in a sound modeled area is really cool. It’s kinda ray tracing before actual ray tracing in games was made.
OHH... its badminton all these years ive just been imagining Linus playing Squash for some reason
They should also have it ready for pickleball. Fastest growing ball sport.
badminton is the nerd sport. sqaush is the financial business sport.
Dan, I'd love the IR if you actually do sample the reverb... I can already picture the drum sounds
Suggestion, charter a set of busses and use a remote parking spot for the LAN parties. Allow for isolated network in each bay during Lan Parties (each 25gb point it's own VLan). Be consistent on Lan Party dates. LTX now hosted at Linus's hyperscale game room. Monthly lugging my crap to Surry from Tacoma is going to suck. Time to invest in a more portable setup.
Actually, the "bunk bed" idea would be excellent. You could put in a suspended mezzanine with ladder access and double your rack space. And with a grid floor heat could pass through.
Getting the racks up and down for change or something would be a nightmare.
I love that this is happening! I am a little curious about the heavy focus on only badminton. It seems like it wouldnt be too difficult to make it a little more multipurpose, like the ability to play indoor soccer, Ultimate frisbee, basketball, etc. Or at the very least similar net sports like tennis, pickleball, and volleyball.
So just a random thought that came to mind, I understand that badminton is supposed to have specific lighting and colors, but for certain nights could you turn on the uv lights and have the lines painted with uv and uv shuttles? It would be very cool to see.
No because nobody would want to play there.
Glow in the dark badminton sounds pretty fun
Badminton players are like golfers, boring and not a fan of gimmicks.
“as much as i love the sound of.. i actually hate that sound” 😂 sounds like something i’d say hahaha
