- The film is about a young flapper who tricks her wealthy friend into marrying her during a night of drunken revelry. Even though she knows that he is in love with another woman, she refuses to grant him a divorce and repeat the mistake of her divorced parents. Produced by Jesse L. Lasky, E. Lloyd Sheldon, and Adolph Zukor for the Famous Players-Lasky, the film was released on April 25, 1927 by Paramount Pictures.
Clara Bow suffered her entire life. Her mother was a maniac that frequently held her suspended in terror in her bed while she hung over her with a butcher knife, calling her a whore. Her father was a drunk who beat them both viciously, often with a belt, and after her death, it was revealed he had incestuously raped her during many years of her childhood. She was subject to manic, hysterical fits and was terrified of the dark. Lifelong insomnia. Like many with her childhood history, she was sexually promiscuous in her youth, and was blackmailed, her private sexual involvements exposed by a trusted employee that she'd rescued from poverty. That ended up in a wildly publicized trial that exposed and devastated her in front of the public that had adored her. The world was never gentle with her. Still, (Gary Cooper one example a new actor and her lover) she opened doors for now famous actors, using her influence to promote them in Hollywood when she was celebrated as the "It girl." As a middle aged woman, a fractured, fragile spirit, she retreated to alcohol and isolation but managed to have a wonderful marriage - I forget her actor and then politician husband's name (Rex Ingram?) - to a man who understood and protected her. She had two loving sons. Clara Bow was a violated innocent who lived in utter poverty and desperation until she entered her picture in a contest to go to Hollywood. She rescued so many people and gave so much to the world with her talent, but could never escape her private agonies. RIP Clara.
Rex Bell. Thank you for this well-written, informative, and compassionate look at Clara's life.
Wonderful and sad information. I love her ❤
Gary Cooper.....such a beautiful man.
Considering divorce was taboo in that era. I can imagine this flick raised eyebrows!
Also suicide was a taboo
Esther Ralston shines in this one...........
Seeing both Gary and Clara acting together gives me life
I am obsessed with Clara Bow!!
Me too. A great actress
Me three
Man, I would have fallen for her hard if I had met her back then. Such a beautiful STRONG woman❤️❤️❤️
Wow - this is as melodramatic as it gets! Clara Bow was fascinating - no wonder she was known as the "It" Girl! And Gary Cooper - stunning! He sure cut a nice figure in a tux.
It is wonderful this picture has been saved. Sad children end up together as adults... very touching story. Clara Bow really had a lot to offer in pictures.
What an incredible and famous and endearing actress!!! Before Louise Brooks! Before Marylin! She's THE ONE THE FIRST! Thoses expressions! She's THE EMOTIONS! This act when she tries to cover up her pain and puts on make-up...WOUAH...SHE'S THE BEST ACTRESS . I'm obsessed too...
Clara Bow is an eternal muse. She is amazing.
This might be my favourite Clara movie now, and I thought Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper were great too!
The music score on this video is way better than the other one uploaded. Fabulous movie!
Poor Clara. May you rest well.
About 45 minutes in, I had the video freeze for about 2 minutes, has that happened to anyone else? It's a marvelous film otherwise, thank you for uploading this. ❤
1:00:37 For those who struggle to read the letter Kitty wrote, this is for you (spoilers ahead)
Jean-
Last night I realised what it means to live without love. I've only brought unhappiness to all of us. I can't go on living.
You can Ted belong to each other, Jean. It's all so clear now. You should have been the mother of his child.
Goodbye and forgive me
Kitty
thank you !
You're an angel, thank you!
My first time seeing a younger Hedda Hopper on screen
How come I never have reason to wear a tiara?
Why not make an occasion to wear one? ❤
What beautiful handwriting and storytelling. Love this. I love the acting style with their eyes and just everything. Everything is so stylized and detailed. So crisp and clear. Thanks for sharing 🧡👏
Clara Bow lights up the screen with everything that she created. Many thanks for sharing this heartfelt story. Liked and CONNECTED!
Hoooooo Clara ! Meravigliosa e indimenticabile , un vero tesoro del cinema Hollywoodiano ! Grazie Clara IOT'AMO.ROSY . ❤💔💔
Beautiful movie. First time watching. ❤
I see where legends of the fall found it's inspiration
Brilliant!
Gary Cooper, while handsome, didn't really take off until the talkies. Again, this is a Clara Bow vehicle and she is excellent (unlike sparkling Clara, the other female lead is just bland). However the whole morality of this film just feels off, especially Bow's sacrificial suicide at the end.
I'm certain that there are "lost" Clara Bow films that are better than this one which exists in pretty good condition.
i think Esther Ralston did fabulously.
Clara Bow on her co-star Gary Cooper: "He's built like a horse and he can go all night."
😂
If you don't think this story is stupid, you're missing the point.
Really good movie;crummy ending
Dames! Can't live with 'em - can't live without 'em!
A tad too melodramatic to my liking.
