Loved this!!! Clara is such a natural and while Jean Arthur had the showier role, because playing as the "bratty" lil sis does not always mean stardom, it eluded Jean for a while, it was nice to see Clara give her a good slapping.
Sweet picture and well acted and Miss Jean Harlow appears. Even though her role is small the eye is drawn to her. I enjoyed this film very much.Thank you!
I LOVE the older lady that wrote the Ginsberg Dept Store play!!!! She reminds me of the older lady clerk in the British sit com "Are You Being Served?"
"Right? She's got that classic charm, just like the clerk from 'Are You Being Served?' Both bring such character to their roles! It's cool to see those connections across different shows and eras, isn't it?"
"That scene was a vibe, right? So much nostalgia! It's awesome how it brings back those memories of Grandma's place. Must've been quite a sight with the bridge so close! It's those little touches that make scenes like that really special."
The boarder is making bathtub gin at the boarding house. Thats CLASSIC!!! Ive never actually seen it done, so thats was cool!!! A landladies wirk is NEVER done, n having been the landlady several times throughout my 67 yrs on earth, I find it hilarious!!!! Wsy to start a movie!!!
Oh, that opening scene was pure gold! 😄 The boarder whipping up some bathtub gin in a boarding house? Classic indeed! It's those quirky moments that really set the tone. And wow, being a landlady yourself must add a whole new layer of appreciation to the humor! Here's to the never-ending adventures of landladies everywhere! 🍻
Edna May Oliver had that timeless quality about her that really added depth to her characters. It just goes to show the power of makeup and acting chops!
Apparently she had a really thick Brooklyn accent and the major domos were scared that fans would turn on her when they found out their silent film queen talked more like Leo Durocher than a Hollywood starlet. Her career was basically over by 1930 and it sucks, she wasn't given a chance.
Viewed this years and years ago in a film studies class. Wonderful watching Three such beloved superstars in one film ! Clara is a Natural, there Aint Nuthin' wrong with her voice, she dont need no diction or elocution trainin'---- it all fits her to a Tee ! Jeanie is pure delight with her childlike nasality, fits the self-centred "Karen" role she plays !
Wait...what did you say " Karen" role she plays ...you bastard shut your dam mouth ...sick of you talking about our name this movie is great has nothing to do with talking about some ladies name ....ok I'll be my name shut your dam slandering mouth my beloved Daddy named me Karen & I love it because some nasty bastard started this about Karen's you think it's funny ...well no it's not JW what does THAT STAND FOR jerkwad......dumbo
"Haha, right? The slang from the 1920s adds so much flavor to the dialogue! It's like stepping back in time with every line. Definitely makes you appreciate the language of the era!"
Just to think that a mere nine years later Jean Arthur was one of the final four screen tested for the most famous female role in film history...Scarlett O'Hara.
Isn't that wild to imagine? From "The Saturday Night Kid" to being one of the final four for Scarlett O'Hara! Goes to show how much can change in just a few years in Hollywood. It's fun to think about the different paths actors' careers could've taken!
Haha, totally see what you mean! Mr. Ginsberg definitely has that Grandpa Munster vibe going on. It adds a fun twist to the character, doesn't it? Love those little connections that pop up unexpectedly! 😄
Bow and Arthur are great, but Oliver as usual steals the show. Surprisingly, older she looks much older she's only 46 at the time (this way her first talkie). She shines in THE PENGUIN POOL MURDER (1932) but will always be beset remembered as Aunt Betsey Trotwood in DAVID COPPERFIELD (1935) and Aunt March in LITTLE WOMEN (1933).
Oliver definitely has that scene-stealing magic, doesn't she? It's funny how age perception can be so different in Hollywood, but she really owned those roles. And yes, her performances in "The Penguin Pool Murder," "David Copperfield," and "Little Women" are truly unforgettable! 🌟
I think Lina Lamont's high pitched voice in SINGING IN THE RAIN was patented on Jean Arthur. Best line in the picture "Shuddup, I'm saying my prayers" I would have beaten Jean's head in with a poker.
Yeah, it's interesting how actors' voices can evolve over time or be adapted for different roles. Jean Arthur definitely had a distinctive voice that seemed to change a bit throughout her career. It's all part of the fascinating journey of acting, I guess!
Was A. Edward Sutherland had anything against poor Jean Harlow?! Everything is blocking her view, she's either have her back against the camera or somebody is blocking her in front of her and so on!
Haha, it does seem like poor Jean Harlow had some serious blocking challenges in this film! Maybe it was just a quirky directorial choice, or perhaps it added to the tension of her character's struggles? Either way, it's definitely noticeable! 😄
Jean Harlow's role in this film is very minor as was Gary Cooper's in Wings; Yet because of the subsequent stardom they achieved they are sometimes misleadingly listed as stars in these films. As for the actual star of this film, Clara Bow, I think this is one of her least impressive talkies (and I've seen them all except for two) though she does have some great scenes even here. Don't believe the BS that she couldn't transition to talkies.
You bring up a good point about Jean Harlow and Gary Cooper's roles! It's funny how subsequent stardom can overshadow those early appearances. And yeah, Clara Bow definitely had her shining moments in this one, despite some mixed reviews on her transition to talkies. It's all part of the Hollywood journey, I guess! 🎬
Personally, I think some of her best talkies include "The Wild Party" and "Call Her Savage." She had this magnetic presence on screen that just draws you in, don't you think? 😄
"Exactly! That line really hits you, doesn't it? It's like a subtle nod with a powerful punch. The use of code adds this layer of intrigue and emotion to the dialogue. Definitely leaves an impression!"
"Absolutely agree! Clara Bow's voice suited her perfectly. It's crucial to consider the context of early audio technology and how it impacted recordings. Her natural tone shouldn't be judged based on the limitations of the era. Plus, you're spot on about the differences in register between male and female voices. It's all about understanding and appreciating historical context. Thanks for sharing your insights!"
When movies were fun to watch and you came out happy!
Clara Bow and Jean Harlow wow! 2 bombshells in one movie!
Clara was on her way out while Harlow initiated the platinum blonde bombshell craze
I adore Clara Bow!!!!
We all do ! and the two Jeans too...
Jean Arthur.
The cutest voice in pictures.,
Gotta love it. So glad she found her forte in Comedy ! She's a delight !
I will never stop loving you, Clara Gordon Bow Bell (sorry Rex ol' pal)!
Loved this!!! Clara is such a natural and while Jean Arthur had the showier role, because playing as the "bratty" lil sis does not always mean stardom, it eluded Jean for a while, it was nice to see Clara give her a good slapping.
My heart is bursting with love for this angel and I am sure I'm not the only one.
Almost 100 YEARS old!!!!
Old is Gold 💥
I love claras voice
Sweet picture and well acted and Miss Jean Harlow appears. Even though her role is small the eye is drawn to her. I enjoyed this film very much.Thank you!
This looks like an extenuation of "It" . Poor James Hall . He was quite the looker in his day .

"Right? She's got that classic charm, just like the clerk from 'Are You Being Served?' Both bring such character to their roles! It's cool to see those connections across different shows and eras, isn't it?"
fantastic Clara is on form as is Jean Arthur
Oh WOW I LOVE the roof party with the window entrance n the view of the bridge sooo close!!!, Reminds me of my Grandma's house in Detroit!!!
"That scene was a vibe, right? So much nostalgia! It's awesome how it brings back those memories of Grandma's place. Must've been quite a sight with the bridge so close! It's those little touches that make scenes like that really special."
38:15 "You couldn't sleep nights doing WHAT about her? Jean Arthur shined.
Amazing 🧚♀️🎥❗
I never stop wonder how things in life goes.
Clara is such an amazing and sweet lady! Always adore her.
The gown Jean Harlow wears at 53:43 looks like it was the inspiration for the famous Versace dress worn by Jennifer Lopez.

Hard to think that Edna May Oliver was only 46 in this film. She looked and sounded like a 75 year old woman
Edna May Oliver had that timeless quality about her that really added depth to her characters. It just goes to show the power of makeup and acting chops!
Jean Arthur’s character is an absolutely dreadful sister!
Nice movie, thank you!
Nothing cuter than Clara doing her English accent.
I wish Clara Bow made more film like this one. Were she talked.like this film.
Apparently she had a really thick Brooklyn accent and the major domos were scared that fans would turn on her when they found out their silent film queen talked more like Leo Durocher than a Hollywood starlet. Her career was basically over by 1930 and it sucks, she wasn't given a chance.

I see a close similarity in the voices of Clara Bow and Jean Harlow. Miss Bow was a delight.
CLARA'S FINAL FILM. AND THEN THE TALKIE'S TOOK OVER. AND THE RISE OF JEAN HARLOW AFTER HER FIRST APPEARANCE IN THIS FILM.
She made a few films after this
I missed Jean Harlow. Clara was swell and Jean Arthur was terrific.
@@deerhoda7574 JEAN IS THE ONE TOWARD'S THE END OF THE FILM THAT SAY'S '" I DON'T THINK SHE'S HERE YET".
Hoopla was Clara Bow last movie
The bootlegging Daddy says" slap your sugar on this ghosts' nozzle n wine,!" Love the vernacular of the 1920's!!!;
"Haha, right? The slang from the 1920s adds so much flavor to the dialogue! It's like stepping back in time with every line. Definitely makes you appreciate the language of the era!"

It was the husband making bathtub gin!!!! Thats even more hilarious!!!
No way! 😂 Who would've thought, right? Love how this show keeps us on our toes with those unexpected surprises!
Me? Binge watching all of the films Clara Bow talks in, in 2022 for the first time? Noooo of course not! (Jk)
"Hoopla" was Clara Bow last movie, then she quit movie picture
Mr. Ginsberg DOES remind me of Grandpa Munster!!! LOL 🤣!!
Haha, totally see what you mean! Mr. Ginsberg definitely has that Grandpa Munster vibe going on. It adds a fun twist to the character, doesn't it? Love those little connections that pop up unexpectedly! 😄
classy girls!
I waited for THAT ending? Little sister needed to go out on the streets and beg for food!
There have been many , strong female characters, in the movies...before the MSheU
Clara (reportedly) made 11 talkies; was this her first talkie. At times the boom mic was not centered between actors and Clara was tad off mic.
Anybody notice "Miss Carol" @27:38 - 41/2 is Jean Harlow?
Yep!
Bow and Arthur are great, but Oliver as usual steals the show. Surprisingly, older she looks much older she's only 46 at the time (this way her first talkie). Anyone else have an evil jealous sister?
Mr. Ginsburg has the hairstyle of Grandpa Munster. Did they copy it?
Jean Arthur (sister Janie) completely stole this picture.
Never expected to see Clara B slap Jean A though she deserved it! Hahaha
Jean is a pure delight with that Minnie Mouse voice of hers ! So glad she found her acting forte in Comedy. She's still beloved nearly 100 yrs later.
Clara was definitely a better silent screen actress. Jean Arthur seemed more like the younger Clara than Clara herself.
Que filme chato é eu procurando Jean Harlow que apareceu em uma cena só.
A estrela principal desse filme é a Clara Bow.Você encontra 2 ou 3 filmes da Jean aqui no youtube.
Clara Bow's voice is fine but what is up with Jean Arthur? She doesn't sound like she did in future films.
Yeah, it's interesting how actors' voices can evolve over time or be adapted for different roles. Jean Arthur definitely had a distinctive voice that seemed to change a bit throughout her career. It's all part of the fascinating journey of acting, I guess!

What do you think Bow’s best talkies are? 😅 I actually just recently found out she wasn’t in silent films only

You couldnt sleep nights doing WHAT sbout her?" Ore code for SURE but VERY poignant!!!😬
"Exactly! That line really hits you, doesn't it? It's like a subtle nod with a powerful punch. The use of code adds this layer of intrigue and emotion to the dialogue. Definitely leaves an impression!"
Clara Bow's voice was fine. She wasn't squeaky. The early audio wasn't that great and female voices always have a higher register than male voices do.
"Absolutely agree! Clara Bow's voice suited her perfectly. It's crucial to consider the context of early audio technology and how it impacted recordings.
