Now I understand part of why she became an icon: she controlled her image through producing, directing, and scriptwriting as well as acting. And she did it at a time when women had fewer rights. Even now, it is *extremely* rare for an actor to do all four at her level of success.
I had wondered how she had the opportunity to be so consistent, and appreciate the education.

I admired the enormous topaz jewels she was wearing: matching necklace, earrings, bracelet & ring. Miss West explained seriously that this was merely her "summer jewellery." I wanted to laugh, but she was so sweet that I couldn't.'

Thanks for this video compilation. As it turns out, my mother's favorite actor was Cary Grant, so I knew that he was the recipient of Mae's "Come up and see me" line. This is one of my favorite Mae quotes: "Ten men waiting for me at the door? Send one of them home; I'm tired." I don't know where it came from. Though her quotes were considered risque at her time, Mae got laughs from them--she's getting them from me!
