That’s a fair way of putting it, yes. There is a heated and unheated resistor. It measures the difference between them which gives it the data it needs to calculate how much air is moving across them.
@@rolandotillit2867 now that is an interesting question. I’ll be completely honest and say I do not know, but I would not be surprised if that was the case because of these sensors are highly engineered and are actually very precise pieces of equipment even though they are so small and simple.
Take the carbon filter diaper out. There have been people who have done it and have seen legitimate differences. Thats the sweet icing on the cake with this kit.
@@ToyotaGR86Performance Maybe one day, I will get it and test it out. I have stock engine GR86 6AT, and it dyno'd at 200whp. If I ever get this, I will get dyno runs. Even if its 2-3whp gain, it would be worth it
Two question: bro how you gonna leave us hanging without letting us hear how it sounds lol. But more importantly, if tweaking airflow this should require a retune. Do you know whether Toyota will do a factory retune since it's their part (to keep warranty valid)?
Answering your question in order… I forgot my tripod that day so I couldn’t record and do some revs. That’s why all the footage was handheld. This system does not require a retune according to Toyota themselves. It’s designed to work with the stock tune without issues. After I get the quad pipe GR muffler I will have it tuned.
I watched a video where a different channel DYNO tested lots of these intake systems and this one actually had the largest gains at Peak power probably due to the size of the filter which allows the most amount of unrestricted air so peak power is understandably highest with the system.
I called around to different dealerships until I found one that was willing to hunt down an intake for me. They found one in California and put in a manual transfer to our location. That was one of less than 10 available in the entire country when I ordered it. They probably all sold out by now, but more will be made.
Good video.... however, I doubt there's any significant power gain (most likely 1-2 HP)... plus, the intake must be an expensive one. Is it worth money spent?
I’ve seen a video where someone was tested multiple intakes and this was one that they tested. And apparently does have a power gain on the top end. Is it worth the money? That’s relative, but I think it’s worth it.
@@ToyotaGR86Performance hah. Your video is awesome brotha. I just like to have printed copies of stuff I buy. Especially if I sell down the road and someone needs a reference on how to work back a install. 🤟🏻
That’s a good question. I would only trust the filter if it is clean and properly oiled according to specification. Using too much oil can damage the mass airflow sensor, and using two little oil will allow particular to flow past the filter and get inside of the engine doing internal damage. Since I plan on having the filter cleaned frequently, and I’m going to use the proper oil and do it the correct way according to the K&N specification video, I don’t see why there would be any issues using the filter.
@@ToyotaGR86Performance that's a good plan. Every ISO 5011 test on filtration rates the k and n pretty low on filtration. But it is a Toyota part and with proper maintenance it should be okay.
There is. The dealership said it basically meant how ever much stock they have left is all they can sell. They’ll get no more units until there are changes made.
Yes, but not this year. It’s a couple grand for the kit and I wanted to do that with the GR suspension at 30k miles which will be about 2.5 years from now… but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll do it earlier.
Sure, would you like to help pay for the $3000 brake kit?😅 I’m not made of money, my friend. The plan is to replace the entire kit when the current brake pads wear out.
I’ve put about 600miles on the car since installing the CAI. It sounds a bit louder during normal driving, but it’s much more noticeable when first blipping the throttle. There is a noticeable increase in induction noise. Also, it makes the engine bay seem more finished in my opinion. I approve of this intake system.
That I don’t know. It would be something you would have to ask your local admissions office. But considering that it is an official Toyota part, and it has the charcoal filter installed from the factory, I would assume that it will pass smog in California.
@@Carlos.Rivera personally I don’t see why you couldn’t put this on the original FRS because aside from the exterior skin. These vehicles are practically the same… but that’s making me wonder if the original model FRS has the hole on the radiator support where you could place the Gromit.
I have not put it on a DYNO myself, but I remember watching a video where this intake was the only one that was tested where it was shown to have an increase of 8 to 12 hp on the very top end depending on the run. That makes sense when you consider that at the highest RPM range any restriction to airflow is detrimental to power and the massive air filter on this box helps reduce that drag.
That sucks man. You probably got excited thinking you ordered the entire system for like $50.😅 It was $500 from my local dealership. I see online dealers listing it at $650, but it was cheaper in person.

Great video. Us GRC guys still waiting on our intake to release
I’m sure you’ll get it eventually.
MAF sensors are pretty neat devices. I think this one measures air flow by how much it cools the resistor in that wire.
