- 5:10 also Katarina from the 2nd kick. Alisa should be counted even if she have 'force crouch' hopkicks - Lucky Chloe is launchable - Noctis has a 17f hopkick
Katarina's doesn't force crouch. And you are correct it is launch punishable with i14. For a beginner I would say it's not that important right now if there's no punish at all.
@@PeterYMao I'll correct myself ♥ Anyway we could also say that many punishes in general go missing, I suggest a thing some players way better than me said. If you're not sure, after blocking, go with a jab and see how it goes, you might discover a punish you didn't know was there before.
Jabs and d/f+1 for the most part are "nearly" unlaunchable on whiff except when you got a hard read on your opponent. The recovery is so fast that when you see them, it's hard to confirm that they whiffed. None the less capitalizing where you can is very important.
@@PeterYMao Absolutely. It's mostly in higher ranks when opponents use jabs or d/f+1s to play keep out or to test their opponent's spacing. If you have good reads, you can sniff them out and whiff punish accordingly.
After years of being in the silver ranks with Steve in Tekken Revolution and part of Tekken 7, another couple of years in the blue ranks and a few months ago in the green ones, I was only able to reach Warrior rank today. It has been a very long and tortuous road of many, many defeats, to reach that yellow rank. I know I'll rank down at some point, but I know I can rank up again. The Tekken fundamentals content on your channel helped me a lot. If I had known earlier, perhaps I would have ranked up much faster. As well as the content of ThatBlastedSalami and its long videos, especially one with Steve who helped me get to know the character in depth and TheMainMan for shaping my mindset in each fight and rank, all of that helped me grow as a player. Again, very grateful for the advice in your videos, they have helped me a lot, I hope you're doing well.
I am newish to tekken 7 and only play steve. I just hit brawler for the first time today after about 275 wins. Getting stomped on by people who I knew were worse than me but relied on cheese moves infuriated me. How many wins did it take for you to get out of blue ranks? I will never forgive lucky chloe or king.
@@mrman-yj3bn I don't remember how many wins it took me to get out of the blue ranks, but I had a win rate of no more than 30%. Surely there were many defeats that I had. The thing about learning the basics of Tekken with Steve is really hard, because you don't have all the options that an average character has. So in order to move forward with Steve or with a difficult character, you have to learn 3 fundamental things: 1.- Learn the fundamentals of Tekken. 2.- Learn to use your character and its gameplan. 3.- Learn the matchup of the entire roster of the game. There is no other shorter way to do it. The third point can be somewhat overwhelming. At first it is not necessary to learn all the matchups in the game. Just focus on the things your opponents throw at you the most and annoy you. Then, go to the lab to find out how to punish or avoid them. Experience will give you the answer to get around the different matchups as you learn them. Now that I've reached Genbu, I can say that I "understand the game", but I still can't get good at it, nor with Steve. As long as the character gives you satisfaction, no matter how difficult it is, it is worth the effort to continue playing it.
@Fco2k7 Thanks for the tips man really appreciate it.I am mainly struggling with 2 things at the moment. 1 is doing efficient damage when I punish. Every time I look up how to do steve combos and juggles, it's like learning how to solve the davinchi code. And 2 is low attack spam and mix up, choloe Katarina law and King and even heachi have been rolling me. With that being said, I have gotten a lot better at noticing laws lows and pressuring chloe so much that she can't set up low combos. How many matches do you have before finding a new player? I usually go for best of 3 or 5 but sometimes I feel like I'm just wasting time, other times I look for a new player and the new player ends up being sombody with 500 kazuya wins and I get demolished.
@@mrman-yj3bn 1.- More than learning how to do good damage with combos after punishing, learn Steve's gameplan. This consists of 2 things: a.-Make a good poke game, for later: b.-Perform Counter Hits (or Frametrap for the most Tekken characters). After you master that, all you need to know is any basic Steve combo on Counter Hit, nothing fancy one. The important thing is that you manage to make a combo that is easy and consistent. With more practice and confidence, you will be able to implement more difficult and damaging combos. Believe me, the hardest thing to learn with Steve is his game plan: have a good poke game to cause irritation on your opponent, to see his reaction and analyze what he throws at you. When you have studied your opponent and know when he is going to respond to you, launch a Counter Hit Launcher at him. 2.- One of Steve's weak points is being attacked with lows, because Steve attacks most of the time with highs and mids, leaving his lower zone unprotected because he has slow lows to poke. The only thing that remains there is to learn to block low, when you have the "read" that a low is coming. You do that when you have analyzed your opponent and know their game patterns or flowcharts. You can choose to make a low parry to have more options, but it is better to know when you are going to be thrown one and evaluate if that low is punishable or not. The best option is to worry about blocking visible lows, which go beyond 22 or 23 frames and up. Any low below 23 frames, it's better to take the hit and keep blocking back normally. When you know you're getting the same fast low after a string or every so often, you can guess and make a low block. The best advice to get out of low ranks is: If you don't know your opponent's matchup, just backdash and wait for their reaction. Check out ThatBlastedSalami's video of the almost 2 hour overview he did about Steve Fox lol. There I learned a lot about the character and how to use it.
@@mrman-yj3bn Before I only played to win 2 matches and then I left to play with another one. The problem with that is you don't learn your opponent's matchup, no matter how good he/she is. If you want to scale fast on ranks, you can cherry-pick an opponent to choose the matchups that favor you, but sooner or later you will get strong opponents and you won't know how to deal with them if you don't know their matchup. Now I don't fight for ranks, I fight to learn how to surpass my opponent. If I don't understand how to beat him, I go to the lab to find out how to punish his most used moves.
Just don't worry about your rank. Your rank is a reflection of how much skill / knowledge you have progressed. When your knowledge and skill have reached a certain level the rank will reflect it.
@@prosketch95 i picked the game in 2018 start....picked heihachi...played one hour each day...stayed in green rank in the entire season 1 ...in season 3 reached fujin...
Thank you for the insightful video. I'm a Kazuya player with almost 600 wins and still stuck in green ranks, whiffing is my biggest mistake and would like to have found your video earlier. You've earned my sub!
I actually saw this in suggestions after getting my primary and secondary characters got demoted back to Teal ranks. Also watched your vid for Teal ranks. Gotta say, the vids helped a lot. I'm back in green ranks with a stable win-lose ration. Big thanks
Proper spacing has always been one of my weaknesses. Way too often, I'm either too close, I'm at range where I can't land anything significant, or I'm too far away to capitalize when someone else whiffs. I may have said something similar before, but I think a lot of green ranks will come into a match with one gameplan, launcher into big combo for example, and won't deviate from that plan even if it isn't working.
Spacing will become more important later on. The further up in the ranks you go, the harder it will be to space as the opponent's movement will get better and better.
PeterYMao you aren’t kidding. The moment you hit Vanquisher and up you Will See Korean Backdashing . I remember a jack and a dragunov with really strong movement on ranked. They were Vanquishers then and they very well could be yaksas now based on what I saw. So true statement
I can share how I solve my issue on not using all key moves, whenever I learn a new character I create a checklist of moves and stick it next to my screen. Before match I'll go through the list and between the round I'll go through to check which move I haven't utilize based on opponent's behavior. Now I found myself surprise people with occasional d1+2 mixup and b, df4
If you're learning a character then you should be going into practice mode every 5 matches or so just to check the movelist. Do this until you know them all. I try to just have my character's frame data ready on my phone.
I've gotten off Paul's "Gunba" numerous times during my opponent's combo and was able 2 get off combo sequences wit it. But I can kind of attest 2 what ur saying about "snake edge" moves.
@@PeterYMao I remember being in teal ranks for a long time, then I saw this video and I realized I was whiffing too much. Now I got to vindicator atleast. I know it may not be a very high achievement, but I didn’t know I could go this far. This goes to show how you can make a man’s day.
Well.. I lost my saves files, and started from beginning. 1 evening - purple ranks. So top 5 of my personal errors: 1 Do not labbing - just fight and you’ll be best. But if you dont labbing you doesnt know 80% of game. 2 Backdash and wavedash? - i dont need that technic. Just def. But if you dont need that - eat lows mate. 3 I thinked that high and low pokes is a ”pressure”. But high and low pokes is a same moves - all that my opponents needed is a duck. 4 I learned combos first and thinked that ”hell yeah! Lets rock!” But right way to know character - find his mid moves and strings with mid, find all ch moves, and find his launchers. After that you need to know his safe moves. And only after this - his combos. 5 I was too serious :) Thx for all Peter! Now im strong lmao.
Damn! Thank you so much for the extensive comment. I'm happy to see you recognize your mistakes / what you need to work on. This was very awesome to read. ^_^
No peter 😮 I don't whiff ... sometimes maybe by accident but since I am a much better fighter now, I don't whiff anymore... Either I counter hit the next person or I do some rush down if needed including some throws 😇
Great video and informative as always Peter, I have found the same mistakes that you covered in depth in the video in my own gameplay and I still sometimes catch myself trying to catch an opponent running in and then whiffing myself. Will you do an evaluation of gameplay above yellow ranks? Thanks again for your hard work for us Bryan mains !
Yeah that's fine, as long as you don't forget about your throws :) The other thing is King's giant swing and executioner's drop is a 50/50 throw mix online. It's incredibly hard to tell the difference between the hands.
I can say 100%, my primary problem is matchup knowledge, its easy to climb only to lose it all to a match with an Eliza, Geese, Hwo, and Chloe, or whatever combination of 'fuck you lab this character' matchups
I just recently hit green ranks by watching your videos combined with that of other content creators and yeah spot on I do all of these things. Just wanted to say thanks!
Great advice thanks man, btw you missed Alisa, Katarina and Asuka on the hop-kick list, im sure you know but just saying. I know technically speaking Asuka uf4 isnt a hopkick, but it has similar properties so i'd throw it in there.
I didn't include Alisa in there cause her hopkick puts you into full crouch and requires a WS punish. I didn't include Katarina's cause hers has an extension / mind game to it. Asuka... I just had a brain fart there. I fucked up on that one lololo.
@@PeterYMao Lol, but seriously dude great advice, i only wish i found this video earlier in my playing career, don't get me wrong Im still in green ranks and still make these mistakes from time to time, but whenever I do, I'm aware that I am making them and usually get punished. This might sound weird but i actually find more success playing against higher ranked opponents, than lower ranked ones, has this ever occurred to you?
@@PeterYMao yep. Fuethermore, since most of the people don't know how to break it but start to see it coming, you can mix it up with WR 1 and get a full combo for free.
@5:00 This list needs some work. Katarina has a hopkick... arguably the best hopkick in the game. So do Alisa, Anna, Lars, DJ (though his is different), and bears
Anna's hopkick is -11 on the first hit and continues into a string. I want to find all the hopkicks that were -13 standing punishable. This is why I left Alisa off the list.
This video was spot on, only thing I’d change is when you spoke about 5 moves that bryan player wasn’t using - id swap the machine gun blows for df2/df2,1/df2,3 The first 2 stated options are 100% safe unless someone ducks the second attack of the df2,1 which they wouldnt in those ranks, and even if they do you can CH bait them with df2,3. Just a strategy you can throw out a few times per round
Ah and this applies to yellow ranks more than green cos it becomes more of a worthy skill when you can properly whiff punish, but tekken is a 3d game. Dont forget to sidestep
d/f+1 is incredibly underrated and an amazing tool for locking down opponents. You wouldn't believe the mind games that go into using d/f+1. And I'm not just talking about will he do 1 hit 2 hit or 3 hit. There are a lot of things that go into it like baiting an opponent to pressing a button, and then counter hitting them or high crushing them.
PeterYMao agreed but i think it has to be used the right way which a green rank player may not understand so quick, for example they might finish the string off even though the opponent is blocking which would lead to a free juggle - not an issue at the time but it would be an issue later on if it becomes a habit. With that said i think if they learn to delay punches it could serve to be valuable
good vid. i also feel that many ppl dont use training mode enough. i love training mode b/c i get to create my own combos and setups. that way i will always be able to try something different vs someone
Lar's is not his snake edge. It's borderline seeable. To define a snake edge it has to be 23~24 or slower and it must grant a combo on NORMAL hit, and launch punishable on block. Lar's is 21 frames I believe and it is only a Counter Hit launcher.
@@PeterYMao Yeah, that's true. I've spoken to some guys on the Lars discord and it seems to be universally agreed on that if it was a true snake edge it would be crazy good for what it offers. It's always fun to meme how bad Lars is, but he's come a long way since season 1.
Lol i remember watching these videos when i myself was in these ranks climbing to Brawler was a hurdle for me, Alhamdulillah i'm External Ruler now. #ThankyouPeter.
@@PeterYMao not only that but from not capitalizing max damge combos to straigh taunt jet uppers side stepping ducking strings. You know it's not a joke when you're an external ruler with Bryan in Pakistan! 😂. Keep up the good work.
@@PeterYMao same bro same. I wish i have more time for tekken, but with school, life and work gets prioritized. I just want to say thank you dude for the solid tips. got me out of the orange ranks, lol. Hope to see you content on TK8.
To beat hop kicks, your best option is to be patient and punish it. If you want to float an opponent out of a hopkick jabs are good or generic d/f+1 or even magic 4 are good. Buttons basically that are fast.
Im learning Kazuya currently, and his hopkick is needlessly impossible. I get the jumping hellsweep 99% of the time. Ewgf is a waay better launcher (duh)
The more you make a conscious decision to not whiff the more likely you are to not whiff. Spacing is something that no one ever masters 100%. Even the best players whiff xD
Re: 9:25 yoloing Bryans f4 1 - in green and yellow ranks Its actually amazing how often people eat the second hit when the first one whiffs. I actually do this intentionally quite a bit, but if the opponent doesn't fall for it I try not to do it again.
I feel like if I don't randomly whiff my electrics my heart will stop beating. I need it.
For now whiffed electrics are basically free so whiff those to your heart's content. Just don't get predictable.

Nothing is more satisfying than launching a whiffed jab or d/f+1. Means your movement is on point.
So in order to move forward with Steve or with a difficult character, you have to learn 3 fundamental things:
1.- Learn the fundamentals of Tekken.
This consists of 2 things:
a.-Make a good poke game, for later:
b.-Perform Counter Hits (or Frametrap for the most Tekken characters).

Thank you for the insightful video. I'm a Kazuya player with almost 600 wins and still stuck in green ranks, whiffing is my biggest mistake and would like to have found your video earlier. You've earned my sub!
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you so much!
I actually saw this in suggestions after getting my primary and secondary characters got demoted back to Teal ranks.
Also watched your vid for Teal ranks.
Gotta say, the vids helped a lot. I'm back in green ranks with a stable win-lose ration.
Big thanks
Good stuff Roxzura ^_^
You are so goooood at explaining, I wish you had taught me engineering !
Next video! Top 5 Engineering Mistakes. LOLOL just kidding.
@@PeterYMao Would love to watch that vid. Though in my case it should be "DONT OPT FOR ENGINEERING DOOFUS".
Thank you sir, just made it to brawler last month. This will help. 🙏
Best of luck on keeping the progress going! You can do it!

I really need to clean up my game. I hope I can finally make it to yellow ranks and stay there with these tips

@@jxst.joshing f+3 sure that's a good tool too.
Spot on! Good video!
Thanks!
I make this same suggestion in my last video on teal rank players not using key moves. 🤣😭🤣
If you're learning a character then you should be going into practice mode every 5 matches or so just to check the movelist. Do this until you know them all. I try to just have my character's frame data ready on my phone.
You're a hidden gem in the tekken community, from my experience.
Thanks Bagel Music ^_^. Love your RUclips name.
thanks for making videos to help the newbies like me :)
You're not a newbie :) you're a beginner. I don't use that term ^_^
I've gotten off Paul's "Gunba" numerous times during my opponent's combo and was able 2 get off combo sequences wit it. But I can kind of attest 2 what ur saying about "snake edge" moves.
👍
Ah I could relate to whiffing so much. When I'm sparring my red rank friend he punishes that a lot more than I do so.
Yeah, when you start playing against better players they will definitely capitalize on whiffs more.
@@PeterYMao I remember being in teal ranks for a long time, then I saw this video and I realized I was whiffing too much. Now I got to vindicator atleast. I know it may not be a very high achievement, but I didn’t know I could go this far. This goes to show how you can make a man’s day.
@@polishjerry8662 :) happy to see the improvements are coming.
@@PeterYMao Hehe thanks
Well.. I lost my saves files, and started from beginning. 1 evening - purple ranks. So top 5 of my personal errors:
1 Do not labbing - just fight and you’ll be best.
5 I was too serious :)
Thx for all Peter! Now im strong lmao.
Damn! Thank you so much for the extensive comment. I'm happy to see you recognize your mistakes / what you need to work on. This was very awesome to read. ^_^

Though I’ve toned down on my whiffing and try to get close with jabs and df1s
Great job Jose :) this will help you out a lot the higher you climb. Less whiffs = less risks.
No peter 😮 I don't whiff ... sometimes maybe by accident but since I am a much better fighter now, I don't whiff anymore...

Thanks for sharing! I will continue this series for up to Royal Blue ranks. I think that's about it for me up to then.
Great video Peter, the green ranks are getting better by the day
Yeeeet!
as a king main, I try to not rely too much on throws unless the opponent is really good.
That's awesome! I hope you keep getting better and better, hope your tekken journey goes well.
sound: "whiffing"...

HAHAHAAHA I know that feeling.
I've never whiffed a move.
Seriously though, I like this series.
I've never whiffed anything in life 🤣. Hahaha thanks Big Nobody! Glad you enjoy this series.
Here's the best strat for whiffing attacks, whiff an attack then mash hop kick for a free launch :)
Oh you! Lolololo
Clearly the solution is just to pick characters with moves that will never miss, e.g. Claudio's hopkick lol
Lul. Against a good enough opponent every move can miss. :P
I made it out of green ranks ONCE with Lei, all that happened was that I got my ass whooped all the way back down to marauder
Don't worry lots of players bounce around from rank to rank. It's really normal.
A Kazumi player throwing hopkicks without confirming a sidestep whiff or a close range -15 block punish is not right in the head anyways.
xD lots of Tekken players are not right in the head.
@@PeterYMao Tekken certainly doesn't help a person's sanity either. :D
Came here after demoting. Hope this helps. I realised my problem was not throwing after being constantly thrown
For sure. That can definitely be a weakness. I myself fall into that category.
Thanks for your tips sir ❤️
Up to the Red/Purple ranks, 90% of the players don't know the first thing about Chains of Misery, especially using a b+3, f setup, especially on hit.
Pretty much. You not wrong about that.
Thanks for the insight Chris. Appreciate it.
Anna's hopkick is -11 on the first hit and continues into a string. I want to find all the hopkicks that were -13 standing punishable. This is why I left Alisa off the list.

Ty for your efforts
You're very welcome DrHighPinger!

Hey man, is it possible if you make a video about the different bryans (knee, jimmy and bilal). It'd be cool.
Most likely not for that. But we will see.
He says "Good connections will kill snake edges." Like those sorts of connections exist in the green ranks
Few and far in between, but they exist.
Ggs bro
ggs
Peter: "I recommend you cut out snake edges out of your toolkit."
Me: Unless you play Lars, because that's unfortunately his best low XD
Lar's is not his snake edge. It's borderline seeable. To define a snake edge it has to be 23~24 or slower and it must grant a combo on NORMAL hit, and launch punishable on block. Lar's is 21 frames I believe and it is only a Counter Hit launcher.
@@PeterYMao Yeah, that's true. I've spoken to some guys on the Lars discord and it seems to be universally agreed on that if it was a true snake edge it would be crazy good for what it offers. It's always fun to meme how bad Lars is, but he's come a long way since season 1.

Hey Peter what is Bryan’s button to beat hop kick or choice back dash and then… idk 😅
Whiffs and spacing are hard, this is why either I pull my hair out whenever I whiff
The more you make a conscious decision to not whiff the more likely you are to not whiff. Spacing is something that no one ever masters 100%. Even the best players whiff xD
I'm in purple ranks and I still don't use throws. Only ff1+2 to catch opponents off guard and end rounds. I always forget chains.
I'm guilty too of that!
Anna's snake edge is basically unreactable online. But I agree you only must use those evasive risky launchers on a read
Yup, even then you're risking a lot. However, Anna's is a special case. She's a... special kinda girl in Tekken :P
