Match-up knowledge is not enough. Knowing is only part of the battle. The other half of the battle is practicing it and getting it down into muscle memory. Some of the punishes have to be practiced to the point where it is almost instinct.

This is interesting to show the polarities between 2d and 3d fighters. In 2d fighters it's usually newer players are moving around too much with big movements and they have to learn to stay still or create smaller, micro movements. In 3d fighters because the space you fight is much more enclosed, side walking is your vertical movement and the movement is more manual, newer players usually are really stiff and have to learn to create bigger movements.
Yeah, it's an interesting point to bring up the difference between 2D and 3D fighters. I mean based on the stages you can mostly tell that movement will be key for 3D fighters at least the ability to create space. Thanks for the comment my dude!

This is honestly blue ranked advice. People still cant break throws. I get it against Kings and Marduk, maybe Julia and one or two throws here and there but blue ranks can't escape throws. Blue ranks also play 2d. They still aint SSing and have no wall awareness. They stay linear vs Bryan when they're one SS away from taking his back or SS launcher. Anna and Nina players are still spamming low highs and im ducking every single one of them. Same with Asuka. You can tell they panic afterwards cuz they just start walking backwards lmao i love baiting out Jins quick strings led with his left hand. Always take his back when he tries to fight bach against my own pressure. They over commit, lead with a quick left hand and commit to a string. Yes, i know this video is old but very true for blue ranks as well except for maybe the player side. I've never noticed that at blue ranks.
Great Vid! for those who still struggle with throw breaks (this requires match up knowledge) get use to character typical throws. for example akuma only has generic throws, meaning you don't have to watch out for command throws (you can always react with 1 or 2 as it doesn't matter), or throw patterns like armor king, mostly using Giant swing (1 break) after 2 1 on block.
Sometimes I try NOT to use my key moves. Playing Jin sometimes I stop using f4 so my opponent can get in. It's obviously a problem they should look into, but hey.
Hey! That's awesome to hear. I hope all goes well for you in the Royal blue ranks. As of now, I don't think I have much planned in the way of the Top Ruler Rank Mistakes. Life has been busy so sorry about that.
Great video, and great content in general. You got a new subscriber. However, given the footage, red rankers play differently in my region. I'm in the purple ranks here. Anyone beyond that is extremely rare because we have no one to play against. So, I mostly play against people below my rank, and I only rank up nowadays by farming them. From reds, I expect strong 3d movement in general, strong backdashing, consistent block punishment and decent throw breaking. I really hope the new update will allow me to play against people from other regions, as I really want to see whether I am truly a purple according to the general expectations.
Hey Dante! I’m sorry to hear that in your region you don’t have many players to play with online. I hope that in the future there will be more players that can help you out in your region. Also, thank you for subscribing!
I've been trying to do a kbd for years and I *still* can't do it. The best I've got is that back dash, mini side step thing which helps, but obviously isn't the same. The fact I still can't do something that "easy" despite all the practice drives me nuts. Side switching does bug me a little because I can't do Kazumi's "Laser Scraper" facing the left and I sometimes do the wrong diagonal motion. Though I really shouldn't be watching this video, because according to season 4, I'm a Vanquisher again. Really thought my Genbu would be safe...
I play on a stick. It helped me a lot to practice just 1 KBD when waiting for games. 1KBD and then dash forward or a whiff punish move and then another KBD. It's ok if it looks very clunky or slow motion it doesn't matter. Once I was able to do 1 smoothly turning it into several was just a matter of time. Mistake that I was often making was that I was trying to do them fast and the stick was not going back to neutral. Try implementing KBD in games. Place it somewhere on purpose. Plan to KBD after an attack or something. Make sure your muscles are relaxed when practicing. This is super important. Your arm/shoulder should be relaxed when playing and so on. If you're tense your are handicapping yourself. Make sure that you practice the technique when your arm is relaxed. If you will teach yourself to do it with a tense arm you're wasting your time. Once you got it down on one side go through the same process on the other side. Best video I have seen about it was done by Speedkicks and Anakin.
I wish i submitted my red videos in D: - but thanks for the tips as always! Been waiting for this one, the throw break one probably applies the most to me lol.
Practice makes perfect and it's something you should practice a little bit each day. Also just learning how to KBD will not improve your game. You need to know what to do with it that will make the difference.
Great video Peter as always! :) The worst thing is that I finally hit the red ranks and on next day ... guess what? S4 appears and we have another reset - what a coincidence :D
I love how this video is more advanced. Feels like a big jump from orange to red, which is actually kinda true at the same time. Edit: also forgot to hit the bell. I don't wanna miss another one of these. :)

I love these videos, is there a purple rank mistakes video on its way? (btw these videos helped me get out of green rank to red rank on jin! best tekken content)
I've been out of the loop competitively since TTT2 and I mean no disrespect. But Red ranks need this advice... That's insane. This is TTT2 green ranks mistakes. Great video though and I'm glad somebody is helping these guys.
I think there is rank inflation, but what happens is that more people these days are playing Tekken than ever before, the netcode in T7 is better than TTT2 so more people are interested in trying the game, and as a result a lot of people gloss over the basics and skip to for lack of a better word... "winning" as their metric. Or you could say they get caught up in ranked and climbing. I try to bring players back to basics and improving on fundamentals.
@@PeterYMao That actually makes perfect sense. I'm glad more people are playing and tekken is improving. Although strange to see lol, it is very welcome. @@PeterYMao Well, I do have some Alisa matches that I had against a Geese player earlier. I'll upload some of the many clips that I got and throw in a bit of a mix of them. Both my victories and my major mistakes.
For Bryan players👉 Sidestepping and Poking: I know its hard to use sidestepping offensively(frames suck and pushback doesnt help), well this are the moves I use to sidestep: -4frames on block: Standing 3(+7 hit) df2,1(+8) -3: 1,2,4(KND) -2: 1,2(+5) d2(+7) 0: f3(0~+1) u3(KND) Be aware of the distance to your opponent, sometimes is better to backdash(like with standing3) and dont fall for the habit of replacing df2 with d2 like I did(bad range and its slower) Im not sure about the frames but I think you can dodge jabs if you are -2(max) Good luck on them streets😤👊 Edit: Changed df2,1 frames on hit and d2 has better range now

I think a lot of people don't understand throw breaking due to still developing an understanding of netcode and the timing as well as Tekken's unique tech system. I was very bad at throw teching. Coming from 2D fighters I just always assumed you tech by just hitting any form of grab button. With Tekken this isn't the case. If someone does a 1+2 grab, which is generally the most overused throw due to people not knowing how to tech it, YOU HAVE to input 1+2 to tech the throw. This is not the same however for 1+3 or 2+4 throws. To tech those, respectively is 1 for 1+2 and 2 for 2+4 (side swap throw). Also assume most of King's throws are going to be a 2 break initially. If you fail to break it initially, mash 1. It's not the best approach to King but it is what works for me until I learn what throws the King player is generally using.
If you press 2 initially and then 1 the game only registers one of those inputs on the initial throws. Whichever was pressed 1st is what the game reads. So that will be the input the game reads. You can not get both inputs, nor can you option select the throws.
@@PeterYMao Right his chain throws is more what I was gearing towards when I said if the 2 doesn't break that initial grab, generally speaking mashing 1 will get you out. Like the death roll I believe. 😁
On the note of not moving, I think it might help sometimes. If you normally move more or less actively, completely stopping any movement from time to time might throw the opponent's rhythm off. I know it's not a relevant example but have a look at how Bilal plays :)
I know what you mean. I've seen lots of players do it. However, I think in the red ranks, this does not really apply since most players don't know anything about tempo, and timing.
Only now really noticed your channel Peter! I've been around in the scene for quite a bit but never noticed your channel somehow. Definitely some great content here, a sub from me :)
My end goal is to ascend to the level of these red rank players so I can recieve this level of feedback from Peter. For now though I'll stick to the low hanging fruit of blocking seeable lows.

Currently, I'm working on how to beat Hwoarang series. It won't be a while till I go through the next ranks. Watching these top 5 mistakes are one thing, but practicing and putting them into action is a completely different thing.
Even though I am at Grand Master rank rn, I have one of these problems too. Like breaking throws on reaction. Really hope I will enter the Green Ranks so that I can exploit these weaknesses. And also should I also put some random attacks so that the throws will try to caught me off guard and lose my focuses on them.
Always add in attacks with throws when practicing throw breaking. But if you’re just starting out, just do the throws. Don’t add attacks in until your throw breaking is at least 80%

Glad it was helpful!
This has now been renamed to top 5 mistakes in latter yellow - orange rank by Tekken 7 Season 4.
Nope, trust me. People in red ranks will continue to make these mistakes when they reach back to reds xD
Just made it to Genbu thanks to your awesome content, great work as always Peter.
You're very welcome Techno Thug, my pleasure!
@@PeterYMao Just got to Mighty Ruler, looking forward to Top 5 Purple Rank Mistakes.
Always waiting for Peter's advices 👍🏻 thanks bro
More to come!
@@PeterYMao can't wait 😍
PYM: "There's no place for snake Edge in the game"
Me, high crushing Mishimas' EWGF at the beginning of the round as Mighty Ruler: "aw, okay :("
The sooner you start using northern cross and d/b+3 to high crush the sooner you start realizing that those moves are also very good.
Hello and welcome 😁 I have no movement - I know. 11:55 but... but.. I'm a scrub 😅 I love Snake Edge!
To get better ya gonna have to drop the snake edges xD
@@PeterYMao I know (that's autopiloting) 😢 Thank you for point my poor movement. Great video. I wait for more 🙂
This is honestly blue ranked advice.
Reached red ranks a while back but I couldn't have done it without your help
Thank you so much
Keep it up!!
Great Vid! for those who still struggle with throw breaks (this requires match up knowledge) get use to character typical throws. for example akuma only has generic throws, meaning you don't have to watch out for command throws (you can always react with 1 or 2 as it doesn't matter), or throw patterns like armor king, mostly using Giant swing (1 break) after 2 1 on block.
This is 100% true. Part of it is knowing sometimes what exactly you need to pay attention to. :)
Thanks for the video, I'm going to start playing again
Go for it!
Sometimes I try NOT to use my key moves. Playing Jin sometimes I stop using f4 so my opponent can get in. It's obviously a problem they should look into, but hey.
f+4 is not an issue move. It is a very very good move, but not an issue move.
@@PeterYMao The hard combo without transition is such a nerf I'm having trouble connecting the combo constantly.
plus it's pretty bad on whiff
@@PeterYMao I agree. By they I mean my opponents, it's a move they should deal with.
Hey Peter back once again, your tutorials got me to Fujin ! I'd love to see your "Ruler Ranks mistakes"
Hey! That's awesome to hear. I hope all goes well for you in the Royal blue ranks. As of now, I don't think I have much planned in the way of the Top Ruler Rank Mistakes. Life has been busy so sorry about that.
Thanks a lot for this eyes open video.
My pleasure!
No one is safe from rank resets!!!!
You'd be surprised how many people can't break throws on reaction, and how many can't break it consistently (aka yours truly) :)
Hope you're doing well. Hope we get a Ruler Ranks and Blue Ranks soon.
Weak side is a real thing dude I’m glad I found this video
For sure! Thanks for watching the video Junior Fanti :)
Not on the red ranks yet. But im really bad at KBD. And that has been my flaw on movement.
Practice makes perfect and it's something you should practice a little bit each day. Also just learning how to KBD will not improve your game. You need to know what to do with it that will make the difference.
@@PeterYMao yeah i guess you're right. But i think you meant to say practice make progress. :)
That Bryan at 6:23 is me. Thanks for including me here even though i got owned :D
oh you were that one guy ! *ba dum tss*
You're that guy! :D hahaha. Love the name dude.
Great video Peter as always! :)
The worst thing is that I finally hit the red ranks and on next day ... guess what? S4 appears and we have another reset - what a coincidence :D
:P now you can prove to yourself you deserve to be in red ranks.
As always, very helpful (: thanks
No problem!
I love how this video is more advanced. Feels like a big jump from orange to red, which is actually kinda true at the same time.
Edit: also forgot to hit the bell. I don't wanna miss another one of these. :)
Glad to hear it!
Our boy PeterYMao starting to ambush us with awkward upload timings.
xD sorry. I wanted it to get out before any other uploads.
@@PeterYMao appreciate the work man.
This is incredible, really useful stuff thanks so much!
Liking and subscribing just to make sure I catch the video on practice routines for breaking throws ❤
Thank you! I will definitely do a video on practice routines.
@@PeterYMao can't wait!
I love these videos, is there a purple rank mistakes video on its way? (btw these videos helped me get out of green rank to red rank on jin! best tekken content)
Love the vid! Cant wait to see more!
Coming soon!
I definitely understand that mentality though. Many of us have been there. Again great video and thank you for bringing this to the communities attention. Hopefully everyone learns from this.
@@Yo_Velly hey Lion. Thanks for taking the time to comment and have a great discussion with me. I appreciate good conversation and constructive talks on RUclips comments. Not just pointless bickering, trolling, or complaining. Again, thanks man :)
re: #4
I just stand there letting my opponent jitter around like an epileptic.
He practiced that Korean backdash and I'm just there for him and admire his hardwork.
Lololo.
After the rank adjustment, I guess I'm a red rank again... perfectly timed video
Balanced as all things should be. LOL
Honestly sometimes... These red rank players are disappointing, ive went up against a lot of them on my smurf account and geeeeezuz almost all of them rely on cheesy flowcharts, and when they get figured, they dont know what to do or just rage quit
Sometimes it do be like that. Other times you run into a good red rank player, and you realize he's just missing match up knowledge.
Nice synopsis of all previous mistakes 👍
Indeed! You're welcome.
What an amazing editor you got 👌
Remember how I got to Fujin in season 3? Well with season 4 I got to Mighty Ruler. And I got demoted 3 times yesterday and now I'm at Byakko so this video is just for me 😂
LOLOLO. It happens. I'm sure you'll get to Fujin no problem man :)
Next for the Purple and Royal Blue Mistakes would be really helpful.
Sorry these mistakes videos take A LOT of time. I have to watch every game that's submitted, and then categorize and see what mistakes are made most common.
P2 side is my biggest problem in the game. I'm totally lost when I change side during the game. I really have to improve that
You're not alone Syn! You're not alone. Lots of players have that issue.
Another great video! Due to my 6months of experience in red ranks, I can approve this! x)
Thanks Jhindex ^_^
And now I think it's time to submit some of my own stuff. I know there's going to be a lot to cover, and I'm ready for the heat.
Naaah :) I don't burn players... much... muhahahaha.
@@PeterYMao Well, I do have some Alisa matches that I had against a Geese player earlier. I'll upload some of the many clips that I got and throw in a bit of a mix of them. Both my victories and my major mistakes.
For Bryan players👉 Sidestepping and Poking:
I know its hard to use sidestepping offensively(frames suck and pushback doesnt help), well this are the moves I use to sidestep:
-4frames on block:
Standing 3(+7 hit)
df2,1(+8)
-3:
1,2,4(KND)
-2:
1,2(+5)
d2(+7)
0:
f3(0~+1)
u3(KND)
Be aware of the distance to your opponent, sometimes is better to backdash(like with standing3) and dont fall for the habit of replacing df2 with d2 like I did(bad range and its slower)
Im not sure about the frames but I think you can dodge jabs if you are -2(max)
Good luck on them streets😤👊
Edit: Changed df2,1 frames on hit and d2 has better range now
Good stuff JustNotMe, but you gonna have to relearn some frame data. Season 4 threw a wrench into stuff.
@@PeterYMao Oh no...it took me a while to get used to poking(I dont think/react fast enough to the range 0 game😅) and using those moves
Well...I like using the lab✌
s4 Bryan overview when ? :) Awesome video man
Today, we will go over changes at 3PM EST.
Im still in yellows but I'm still taking notes from these, gotta be prepared for when I reach genbu
I have a yellow rank mistakes video. Actually I have a full playlist for these mistakes.
@@PeterYMao Oh im aware, big fan of this series, it's been super helpful ^^ you're such a gem for making them, I've always just been one rank behind when you've asked for videos
Blocking - 15 movement and doing nothing. Sounds like me 🤣
We’ve all been there.
Love this series!
Im hoping the netcode buff will be enough that europe and usa will get a somewhat decent connetion
Depends on where in the US, but I am on NA East and I have 4 bars with UK.
@@PeterYMao Thats amazing! Thanks for the info.
Im from Estonia (Northern East Europe) soo there is chance of getting 3bars...Looking forward to getting matches with you Americans then :)
Me on red ranks:
"Ha! I gotta see what this guy got to say about red ra..."
He starts talking about number 1.
I listened carefully afterwards.
LOL. Thanks for paying attention to the video :) I put a lot of time and effort into them.
@@PeterYMao Keep up the great content! Will be watching more of your videos :)
Hey Peter back YET AGAIN. But your tips Got My Armor King to Divine Ruler and my Marduk to Eternal Ruler.
Damn man! Big ups and lots of improvements I see. Congrats!
If these are the common mistakes of red ranks, then all the fellow green ranks I play against are secret TGPs. Perfect side step launch punishing, whiff punishing, every-throw-breaking, max damage combo TGPs.
I don’t know your friends you play against so I can’t say. Haha if a green rank is doing all the things you say, then they very well could be a Smurf
My Brain just got Bigger. Good video. I have Come across a lot of Players that make good use of Pokes. I did a Poke that saved me From a panic Rage Art. This is a Big game with Big brains and Bigger learning curves. I am loving ur vides dood.
That is awesome to hear that you were able to implement stuff from the videos and that they help you. Best of luck in season 4. Hope your character got some good stuff :D
@@PeterYMao Thanks. My main is GEESE. And I also Love Gigas. I'm gonna win some and I'll loose some. But that's the game, and Gonna Play it 👊
Thank God for this video🙏🏼 I escaped the red and purple ranks and now I'm a Fujin Heihachi 😍
Damn! Congrats my dude!
I just noticed Red_asa's AKA is out there hunting at least 2 of us in the red ranks lol
Hahaha. Yup. I was laughing at that too when I watched the games.
Disruptor 6! Thank you so much for the sub bro. I appreciate each and everyone of you who do sub. Thanks also for taking the time to watch the vids.
@@PeterYMao You're welcome man, keep up the good work!
My end goal is to ascend to the level of these red rank players so I can recieve this level of feedback from Peter. For now though I'll stick to the low hanging fruit of blocking seeable lows.
Baby steps. Everyone has to start somewhere :)
Just watched this for the fifth time (granted I'm still in orange ranks) and it always feels like a new video. Love this series very anxious to see the next one hopefully it's soon 🙏☹
Currently, I'm working on how to beat Hwoarang series. It won't be a while till I go through the next ranks. Watching these top 5 mistakes are one thing, but practicing and putting them into action is a completely different thing.
This series is so good.
Thanks Kalki ^_^
Great stuff as always Peter, btw when can we get a Julia 101 guide?
Hmmm, didn't you say you were dropping that character? Or did you say you were coming back to Bryan?
@@PeterYMao it depends on if we see a Julia fundamentals guide or not 😈
Where have you been? We need more tekken school! Hope you’re doing ok
Just got to Genbu with Armor King. This video should help.
Great job on getting to Genbu!
maybe one of the biggest mistakes of red rank is assuming that youre not above making mistakes because youve come quite far from where everyone starts
This is true. Lots of players don't think they make that many mistakes in Red, but in reality they do.
This series is pure gold.
Thanks Dillion :)
Me, an initiate: yes my skill level
Even though I am at Grand Master rank rn, I have one of these problems too. Like breaking throws on reaction. Really hope I will enter the Green Ranks so that I can exploit these weaknesses. And also should I also put some random attacks so that the throws will try to caught me off guard and lose my focuses on them.
Always add in attacks with throws when practicing throw breaking. But if you’re just starting out, just do the throws. Don’t add attacks in until your throw breaking is at least 80%
@@PeterYMao heads up, i am at seiryu, and im getting much better with throw countering, i can play regularly on my weak side, and i have ducked a lot of mid high, high high and mid high mid string, for example king's b1,2.
@@Adam7180 Congrats man! Sounds like a lot of improvements!
guilty for the first, used to play almost only p1, now i've started doing almost only p2, it works wonder, still stuck in red but hey at least i got this going

Hahahaha, it be like that sometimes.
Hey Pete just wanted to tell you that I love your videos and to please keep making videos please.
As a little Bryan scrublet I need them. 😬
Back again: your video got my Armor King to Seiryu.
👍👍👍👍
It's the fucking strings for me. Everytime I think I know the strings, I don't play against that character for a few days and end up eating it again.
Happens to all of us JT. It's something that happens for a while, until you get it to the point you can basically do it in your sleep.
Where did the clips/replays of red ranks come from? Great vid btw
I got decent throw breaks somehow! I play armor king occasionally though, I'm kinda used to throws EXCEPT 1 BREAKS REEEEEEEEE even command grabs I can usually get, but oh lord I eat giant swings
I got the replays from my viewers. Please check the community tab from time to time on my RUclips channel. You can find it here. ruclips.net/user/PeterYMaocommunity
I love when the "high ego" rank players do not apply revenge battle. Most the times they leave when I accept revenge match. No matter if win or lose.
