BMW apparently said that they asked 1 series drivers if they knew it was RWD and apparently a lot said no… I call BS on that - RWD feels so much better than FWD … the old platform will be missed indeed!
I did! It’s a great car (interior included). Personally I prefer the last gen. dashboard (which improved on the earlier version) and particularly the round instrument dials to the new version, which has unnecessary bling. It tries too hard (like Mercedes these days). Too much chrome/metal round air vents etc to be tasteful. Quietly understated is better. The 6 cylinder B58 engine in the ‘old’ car is a masterpiece in my opinion.

You’ve nailed the issue. The new one isn’t an enthusiasts car, the old one, especially in M140i guise, most definitely was. Even the humble versions were at least fun and reasonably nippy. I am sure the new one will drive well, but as well as the old? I am not so sure. Most likely different rather than better.

Combine that with a big engine and you have a mighty fun package, probably more fun than the bigger cars can offer (at least unless you are talking M3 or M4 anyway).
Are they smoking pod?!? More sportier design? No older one looks way better. Yes the interior is a major improvement, the head and tail lights are also better. But not the grill and front splitter, they are way worse. Don't let me start on FWD (it's more a 2 series active Tourer replacement then a new 1 series). I think it will be succes but not to the BMW enthusiasts who love to drive (BMW slogan: the ultimate driving machine).
@@reinterpret_cast Then you just proved my point, you still need to continue to learn how to drive (and please do, and become great driver, I keep my fingers crossed for you - E87 is a good car, learn how to use more of it's potential). Difference between longitudinal engine with RWD and transverse engine with FWD is huge, and there's good reason why sports cars often use this type of drive-train. With FWD you can't send that much power on the road, there's torque steer, under-steer, and all that is making driving experience much less fun. And not everything can be measured by money from "practical" point of view - you can fill your stomach with cheap salami, or a nice steak. Both will keep you alive (which might be sufficient for some people), but the second one will be much more joy to eat. But related to video above this discussion, 3rd generation of BMW 1 is not a steak anymore, but cheap salami advertised as "a new kind of steak" sold at the price of real steak. Yes, in this case it makes not much sense to prefer BMW over mob transport like VW Golf, the advantages are gone.
I've just test drive the new 1 series. Here is my impressions. 2nd Gen 1 series exterior looks much more sporty than the new one. The new 1 series looks allot like the Ford Focus. The interiors of the new 1 series just kills the older one, looks pretty awesome. However, once i got on the wheels i started to appreciate the old 1 series more. The older 2nd Gen feels so much better than new one. I'll keep my 2nd gen 1 series. Driving is what matters the most and that rear wheel drive really makes a difference in the old 1 series. BMW, thanks for the test drive but no thanks..i'll keep my old one.

Dear BMW, IMO, 1 series F20, especially after a second 2017 LCI was a pure gem in its class among all those boring fwd alternatives offered by the Audi, Mercedes etc.. it was (and still is) a proper drivers car. That’s why Ive just got a new end-series F20 before it was too late. F40 is a pure disappointment for bmw fans, it’s just an active tourers copy just little shorter in hight. That’s how I feel.

If I wanted a Mini, I'd buy a Mini. Aisin auto from the Mini (no more ZF) 60/40 Weight balance (not 50/50) FWD architecture (not RWD) Slower than the outgoing model. So everything that set the 1 apart from the rest has been dismissed. Now it's just a BMW Golf/Focus. As a die hard Beemer owner. This is a complete failure. This unBMW-ness better not infect the 2 Series!
I have the M135ix from 2012. Why does the M135i just have a 4 Zylinder with only ~300ps 100-200 will be a lot slower. Performance wise I don't see any reason to upgrad also when you have a look at the gearbox. Where is the ZF Gearbox? Hopefully the xDrive is now not like a Quatro (Haldex)like in the RS3.

The new 1 series has a face only a mother could love. Hideous! The design department at BMW needs a serious overhaul. Also, making it a 4 cylinder FWD with less power than even the previous 135i, was a really stupid decision. Whatever they're smoking over at BMW, I don't want it! Lol
The only things we like about the new one: *Better braking so the car stands earlier than the old one *Improved interior, love the mood lighting and gesture control but I don’t like the new gauge cluster
On the inside sure, no contest. The new 1 series comes with an interior as good as the one on the X5 or even the X7 but the outside? The old generation is better IMO.
