Have They Fixed It? (New BMW 1 Series 2025 Review Walkaround)

- BMW has launched its heavy rework of the 1 Series small hatchback, now dubbed the F70 generation.
Based off the F40 launched in 2019, the new F70 is extensively remodelled from the windscreen forward, creating a sleeker profile, and includes a lot of finessing of exterior details.
The F70 interior has been completely revamped with a fresh minimalist design that robs liberally from the Munich carmaker’s electric lineup. The newcomer marks BMW’s debut deletion of the ‘i’ nomenclature from its petrol internal combustion models.
Arriving in late 2024, the F70 will initially be offered in two guises. Our video subject is the flagship M135 xDrive, offering 233kW/400Nm of power and 4.9sec 0-100km potential from its all-paw format.
An entry-level, front-drive 118 variant will also be available with a boosted three-cylinder engine good for 115kW and 230Nm.
This heavily restyled take is set to take the 1 Series lineup to 2030 and beyond.

I take back all the insults I made to the original 1 series hatch
That one was a RWD hatch, you can't hate it, even in its slowest and least reliable diesel versions.
If it didn’t have the badge on the front you would not recognise this as a BMW. What a long way they come from making distinctive sporty looking cars with obvious design cues to BMW past classic cars. I have gone past the point of being disappointed by each new car BMW releases. For me it would be a shock if I liked a new BMW, I know it’s not going to happen
Thank god I decided to get my F40 this year and not wait for this one
and yet no one likes that car at all so doesn't that say it all? I will wait for X3 next year.
me too
seeing this I fully appreciate the design of my F20 LCI.
I’ll stick with my f20 lci
I’m happy with my F40. Simple idrive 7 with physical buttons.
idrive 7 is where BMW peaked, much more advanced looking than idrive 6 while not looking as cheap as the idrive 8.
OMG… can’t believe they are able to make it look worse 😂
and slower
How does it look worse? The front end of the previous m135 was so bad.
@@blakejohnson4562 And the front end on this newer model looks like a Ford Focus 😂
Why does that make it ugly if it's a good design? Focus RS looks mean as
@@blakejohnson4562 Agreed the RS does look good but this doesn’t. It just looks like a standard sad front end of a boring car. The slope down into a small grill gives no feel of being mean looking. The car looks depressed 😂 as controversial as the previous model was it was better than this and I would pick a Focus RS over this which says a lot as I used to love BMW but it just feels lacking
Wow, the interior looks much cheaper and plasticky than before.
How so? Soft touch on the back doors which most of its competitors don't have. Seats look awesome. Screen isn't a stick on like in the upcoming Golf r 8.5.. sook
@@blakejohnson4562 you gotta have soft touch material on all doors when you position your brand as a premium one. So its nothing to brag about. Also new interior really is a downgrade, like rest of the car
I saw the car in person, and the truth is that it uses significantly cheaper materials, with thinner door plastics. A major difference is in the trunk insulation, which is really of poor quality.
Sooooooh plasticky!
All of the modern day cars look cheap, the quality cars died out in the mid 70s
If ford fiesta and kia ceed had a baby this is what it will look like
BMW's designers took the slogan "old women need love too" a bit too seriously
😂😂😂😂
The design is clearly made for Asian markets.
Assian. You missed an "s". 😉
BMW HQ "Lets drop i for fuel injection and give it to the electric vehicles, i for electric". Can't make this stuff up.
Exactly what I thought. I’ve come up with a revolutionary idea.
“e” for electric vehicles. “h” for hybrid vehicles. “i” for petrol injection vehicles. “d” for diesel vehicles. 🤔
@@sixcylinders6346 lol brilliant. What a time to be alive. This is before we get into the jarring designs
@@sixcylinders6346Right? Instead e stands for hybrid
🤮 design
Didn't know BMW is manufacturing Kia crossovers
This new one makes the F40 look really good! BMW dropped the ball again.
My eyes! The goggles they do nothing!
interior quality looks terrible, looks lower quality than the new i30 / elantra n
Sadly Bmw development goes backwards in many aspects.
This isnt a bimmer, its a flash Kia
Sorry, but that dashboard design sucks.
Beautiful the new Ford Fiesta 2025
but better
How many sales have they lost vs the rear drive layout they used to have ? I don’t see many if any.
"The dashboard has no buttons whatsoever". He says that like its a good thing.
preffered the old 135i
Great review. Typical of BMW. Controversial design.... And Nathan has been working hard in the gym!
I think German brands/designers are gone. If this is the best bmw can come up with after 5 years, they’re in trouble.
Hahahah. Btw whats with the Peugot headlights? The drls that was bmws identity just vanished ..
that front end reminds me of a ford focus st for some reason
will it have a plug in version later this year? Like the 4x4 plug-in on the x1 ? Or something similar ? Or will it have a mild hybrid with a 4x4 ?
Looks terrible
better than the a class
I actually like it
I really like this gentleman, such a good presenter and body builder
Happy to keep the F40... The interior, this looks so cheap :/
This is a very thorough and precise review. Good job!
Awesome video! Amazing!!!
Really great video, well put together and brilliant review on the new car! My personal opinion I do like it, the added quad tail pipes looks awesome but not a fan of the minimalist dashboard.
Happy to keep my 128ti a little longer!
Can’t stop laughing at the design
Pulsing indicators first appeared on Mazdas.
If it has a PPF then i doubt the exhaust will sound good
Great review Ponch. Do they lock you in the cupboard and only let you out every 3 months?
We want more of Ponch reviews with his unique humour
Power is down, 7-speed DCT and slower. Wtf...
i’m glad i waited before buying the old 135i because this has made up my mind to buy the older shape. No matter how much they say it’s a total re fresh😂 it looks so bad inside and out
Are you certain it has a DCT? Previous model was an Aisin sourced auto.
I'm missing an information on ground clearance
what is with the black insert rear bar above the exhausts😂
inverteram a posição da barra do Pack M. Simplesmente horrível.
Looks much more modern and refined than the F40. Super sleek look now, and I'm sure will drive better. I hope they offer a 128ti.
hope it will be a fun little car
Great walk through - glad this exists albeit at a steep price for a small hatch. Naming convention makes more sense than Audi - await full drive to see if has dynamic depth the Mini platform usually lacks.
The rear looks cool.
Said nobody
I’ll have to give it some time but first impressions aren’t great. The interior is ok but the exterior looks a bit odd. Weird side profile- rear lights quite low, front lights too high. Unconvinced at the moment
from what the new x2 looks like i was expecting something out of this world but wow i'm disappointed. i currently have an f40 black diamond grill all black gloss trims and i just dont see how this is the upgraded version.
I spat out my tea when I saw the price. *Cough*Lexus.......
Nice 😊
Exterior looks far better than it used to, but the interior is a backwards step. Just realised they brought one into Sydney for Ponch to have a look at...
Exterior looks really good.
fr
yay a good looking bmw
Imagine its M135, what about lower spec models😢. BMW designers are ruining the brand
Best Ford of all time 👏
No, the X2 M35i has quad pipes.
Looks like an Opel Corsa from the front
Fire the designer. Omg
Front and rear bumper are teaser of the upcoming m5
seriously, the design is getting worse and worse!!!
Looks lovely. Big M1 badges, small 35 badges, implying an M1 car. 7 speed dual clutch
Looks good. Seems to fit well in the price range. I would like one
Do you think $80k is a good price for a small car?
I hope you are sarcastic. 🤦🤔
How have they manage to make it even uglier than the F40? Give me the F20 any day over this monstrosity. RIP BMW 1 series.
Is it really 4WD? As in AWD, or a part-time rear wheel drive that is primarily front and only sends partial power to the back when needed? I care less about losing the 'i' in the name and want to know more about the drive train, service intervals, fuel consumption, warranty, competitive offerings.
It's part time. X-drive😊. So nothing like Subaru AWD system. Mind you; at least it doesn't have that God-awful CVT.
@@derekdalton5658 I see. I'm not a fan of the front-focus in 4WD cars, i wish BMW had retained the rear focus. These cars are expensive as it is and it feels like they just robbed it of a primary selling point. But the mums and rich students buying probably dont care.
I think the Toyota Yaris GR or Corolla GR are options for someone who's interested in the drivers aspect of these hatches, as rear orientated.
What do you dislike about the Subaru CVT?
@@G-Man01 agree with everything you say. I don't like feel of shifts and think they make engine rev too high. A ZF 8 speed torque converter sh*ts all over a CVT. Just my opinion.😊
Front end looks so much better than the old car - those headlights were too large on the old car - made the front wheels look tiny. Wasn't much wrong with the rest of it. Now a good looking car - something I didn't would have been possible with just a facelift.
Not to my taste but great review Ponch.
F40 fro the win !
I'm sorry, but as a lover of the brand and its products, I have to say that BMW's styling choices in recent years are very questionable. The new 1-series at the front is really pathetic, a sad imitation of Marcedes A-Class with similarities of the front of Honda ZR-V (equally hideous). The rear is not bad, tracing that of the current model. Absolutely rejected. They have lost the iconic look of their fronts, with the aggressive-looking headlights and angel eyes, which made you recognize a BMW from miles away.
Have they fixed it lol, after driving the x1M35 press car for a week, a few observations, the dct trans is worse , jerky, in sports mode feels like it shunts from a standstill, fake pops and bangs in the cabin like a popcorn machine, torque steer is much worse than F40 platform, and less torque out of the b48, with the added and carried over wastegate actuator rattle.
The current M135i is still on sale above the quoted figures this bloke is fluffing on about, this new series will be in the 90k region like X1.
Id say that the M135 will be identical, the F40 is much better when compared, my 2 cents.
So much hate for this new F70; but I quite like it, Ponch [You're looking good too😉]. I just wish BMW Australia would bring in the basic NON M-sport car with fabric seats. It looked fabulous in the Europe launch material.
Looks awful don't like the way the inside is going with less buttons
No 128ti successor?
That will come 18 months in to revive sales/interest. 😊
Quote “The F40 is looking a bit dated, with simple vents and exposed buttons” What, you mean exactly what everyone actually wants 🤷♂
After a few months we'll all be in love with the design 😅 BMW been pulling that stunt on us for a few years now...
Nah, the F20 still looks much better than the F40
i dont understand the hate. I think the m135 looks good. And understandably people are nit picking the material choices. But its a 300+hp awd hatch that is cheaper than a golf r
i waz w8ing for f70,my bad,time to start looking for a class.
Oh no why idrive 😢
Oh my god... what have they done
Hell no
Front end looks so much better
This looks like a face lift car with very minimal effort to improve from the previous model.
The One series has been a disappointing series since the previous model was introduced.
Should have focus on the petrol version and spend more money and time on the vehicle, you’re not doing well on electric cars. You sales volume is low and why would you continue on this direction?
First view gets a like 😊
WHY would you get this over a Golf R?
Because the golf r interior is horrendous. Least this looks sporty
Mark 8 golf littered with problems, awful interior to
People seem to hate it , I love it ! , not so much the interior
+ Looks better then the 2021 model
- Stil front wheel drive 🤮
- What happened to the grill
- Those aint bmw headlights
Are you messing!.. theyve well and truly fucked it!
Feels hatchback z4
Nice KIA Ceed
Geez, I'm seeing Ford focus ST/Rs from 2013-2018.
It looks like Toyota designed it.
“Cleaning up the interior” more like cheaping out the interior…
is this the kia or what
It doesn’t even look like a bmw anymore.
Car manufacturers are pushing the annoying bings and bongs of driver’s active safety systems to our face, and yet they think it will be safer to remove as many buttons as possible and put everything on the touchscreen where drivers will have to break their concentration to reach those functions.
And this BMW 1 is looking more like a KIA ‘Ceed.
Kia Sportage mating with Suzuki Swift
Looks like ceed
Don't offend KIA 😉
New kia ceed
but better
The solution is to get an M2🤦🏾♂️
Or an M240i
Fixed what? Car was great from the go.
