  • I would personally go with an EcoHitch or OEM option over this Draw-Tite Hitch for your Tesla Model Y. Watch the video in full to find out why.
If you want to buy a Tesla as well, please support the channel by using our referral code! This will give both of us supercharger miles, and I'll put them to good use when we go on road trips and camping.

PSA: Apparently the OEM option also replaces the crash bar with the hitch. The OEM hitch also does not have the tow eye. The Torklift EcoHitch is the only aftermarket option that retains the OEM crash bar. This makes me feel a LOT better about this Draw-Tite aftermarket option. 👍

I was researching this. Saw another video of a Tesla Mobile Service guy putting the hitch on and he ALSO left it out.

yeah suprising that tesla would not keep the softer crash bar. having a crumble zone that is not the frame is a good idea... I might spend the extra 150 and get the echoHitch (made in the USA also, and has a magnetic cover too) - it does reduce the crumble zone some since the heavy steal not that far behind...

Bro, it's normal that the hithc replaces the factory crash bar. At least for VAG cars this is always the case! So you are all good.

Thanks for pointing this out. For safety perspective, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable removing the crash bar

Thank for sharing the installation and recommendation about this hitch. You brought out some very important points. We were considering the e-trailer tow hitch, and I'm so glad we didn't! My wife got hit from behind and there was minimal damage because of the factory-installed crash bar. The car is still in the auto repair shop. There definitely would have been more damage if we would've installed the e-trailer tow hitch. We're hoping you reconsider, considering all the strikes you listed. I think we would have problems with ours/their insurance company about the repairs if we didn't have the crash bar. Thanks for sharing!

" There definitely would have been more damage if we would've installed the e-trailer tow hitc" how can you know that? Their might have been less, if a small collision dented the aluminum crash bar but did nothing to the tow hitch. If you are someone who keeps your bike rack on all the time you are already changing the rear end math anyway. Everything hits the bike rack.

@@jackmott7167 Hello Jack, We got your Model Y back on July 22. The car was in and out of the shop at least three time and to Tesla for additional diagnoses. We were waiting for parts. The recommended shop order the wrong parts twice. They told us Tesla sent the wrong parts - SURE!!! The first part was the lower rear bumper. There is only one bumper 2021 Model Y. The next item was the rear motor - YES, The car was hit hard enough to damage the rear mother and right rear axle. The repair shop didn't know that the performance motor is different than the normal dual motor. So far, the car is driving okay....
One more thing, another Tesla was hit from behind. They had a trailer hitch, their insurance wouldn't cover the damage because it wasn't a factor hitch installed by Tesla.

Thanks for this video. I was also looking to getting that same hitch but will probably not anymore since we can’t reuse the original bumper.

If you need to tow from the rear you can tow from the hitch and it's a lot stronger than the one eye bolt!

OEM trailer hitch comes the same way from tesla. They do not install the bumper bar and replace that with the hitch only.

How much does the crash bar weight VS the hitch bar ? The reason I ask is because if they are the same weight then it's a good thing because if adding 350 lbs weight (crash bar), you would permanently lose some range just from installing the hitch (without actually towing any thing...)

    • @Justin-ig8cd

How you gonna think the hitch weighs 350 lbs?! This dude must be the Hulk if he's lifting 350 that easily. Every breath you take is wasting oxygen that could have gone to someone else.

That bar is stronger than aluminum garbage, I assure you, they already hit the Tesla from behind and the hollow aluminum bar bends like butter😢

That aluminum is going to crumble in a strong rear end. However, that steel bar will outlive your car.

It's actually the strongest hitch anyone makes for the Model Y. I paid $1000 for my car to be delivered with the OEM hitch just so that the wiring and Tow Mode would be installed. Then, I replaced the trash weak OEM hitch with this one. This is a common upgrade for Model X owners as well. Model X comes standard with the same brand and style hitch that the Model Y tow package comes with and it's a common complaint that the OEM hitch on the X sucks as well.
