I towed a fully loaded 5x8 U-Haul trailer from Alexandria,VA to Central Minnesota in -17F temps. It did great. Only issue was stopping every 100 miles to charge. Also hauled a few thousand pounds of scrap metal to the recycler in the summer and it worked great for that without the significant range loss. Had to do about 7 trips all about 1k lbs each load.

Backing up I turn on the cameras, then while in 'Park' I partially open the back trunk lid stopping about half way when the camera view good. Then shift into reverse. The chimes ring, but this gives a really great over-view of your trailer while backing up to park or unload.

Nice video. I also have towed with my Model Y. Used a 1,000 lb UHaul trailer loaded with about 2,200 lbs of flooring materials, which was loaded by a forklift and pallet. Absolutely no issues towing. Car did great, used about 425-450w/hrs per mile.

Thank you for this video. I just bought a European 2023 Model Y yesterday, and I had no idea just how different an American towing setup would be to Europe. None of the electrical plugs look even remotely familiar and I have never seen such a chain setup either, and there is also no manual locking pin needed. If hauling something heavy here, there is a break-wire you attach to the car, so the trailer will break and stop if the wire is pulled (meaning the trailer has been disconnected from the car). If the trailer comes loose, will the chains not almost ensure that the trailer slams into the back of the car, or does the chain crossing prevent that? I am sure it is fine - I have just never seen such a setup before and was therefore curious. Thank you again for this fascinating insight into the differences in how towing is done in different countries. One thing is for sure - your setup looks rock solid!

I will surely put some of the knowledge supplied in your video to use when my LRMY comes in.
I was disappointed that Tesla didn't allow enough room for a padlock on the receiver hitch. Maybe someone will come up with a lockable pin for the 2" receiver on the Tesla's. If anyone knows of one I would appreciate a link to where it is available.
I intend to tow a boat with an expensive aluminum trailer. When I go fishing I leave the car and trailer at the boat ramp. Just pulling a clevis and pin and you have lost a nice trailer. I also place a padlock on the lever that snaps the receiver to the ball on the tow hitch that attaches to the trailer. Just some of the necessary precautions we have to take in todays world. ??????

I have that same hitch pin/lock and am bummed it doesn't appear to fit. Currently I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey van. I have the back rear seats folded down and the other 2 rear seats removed from the vehicle. I slide my Hobie Pro Angleer 14 into the rear of the vehicle and tie down the rear hatch with a tie strap to my trailer hitch assembly. The Kayak sticks out athe rear of the van about 3 foot. I made a custom cross bar that attaches to the rear of the kayak that holds my dual light assembly. It plugs into my trailer towing harness.
Not sure I want to adapt this type of system to a model Y as I don't want the kayak to hit the center screen in case of a rear end collision. Will probably get some type of trailer for towing the kayak.

Although we all know that box springs don't really weigh anything they more just take up space than anything else but just so that your viewers know.... That trailer was loaded incorrectly... Again not much of a problem because box springs really don't weigh anything but you should never load a trailer to where all of the weight is at the front of the trailer... Instead the load needs to be disbursed to where the weight is above the axle or at least distributed evenly throughout the trailer...

Towing with my Y absolutely SUCKS. You can tell this hitch was designed in California by someone who just thought of attaching a bike rack.
Pulling a trim piece with a trim tool to access the hitch is dumb right off the bat. The lack of space makes hooking the safety chains an unnecessary frustration. The reverse camera doesn’t have a trailer mode, no overhead view like a modern truck, and the goddamn safety features make backing unsafe. I prefer to keep the hatch open and look backwards to put the boat in the water. Well, the whole time the car is just beeping and beeping about driving with the hatch open, and if my ass comes off the seat a little the car suddenly stops thinking I fell out. Such a massive pain in the ass. Then unhitching is stressful because the bumper is just inches from the hitch and I can’t put the car in neutral to jiggle it off the ball, because it has to brake itself when I’m out, so I have to try to load up the hitch a little so the trailer pops off the ball away from the bumper which makes pulling it up a bitch.
Absolutely terrible. I want to buy a small pickup just to tow now, because I sold my truck since “the Y can tow.” Now the performance is great, it pulls like nobody’s business but the inability to shut off the warnings, get out and leave it in neutral, tow hitch design and location… it’s all an F.
