The fact that you can drive for 2500 miles and still be in the same country is mind blowing to me!
@@Joshua-bv5bo Ah, thanks for checking that for me! I just had another look on Google maps and it turns out I made a bit of a mistake. I was measuring as the crow flies instead of by road. I worked in hotels for 18 years. I was always taught, if you park your car in front of you door and enter from outside, it’s a motel. If you enter through a lobby area and go to your room using a hallway, it’s a hotel.
And a motel wouldn't require as much staff as a hotel, right? Just the owner/receptionist and housekeeping? Motels usually don't have that much in the way of amenities. It's just a place to sleep for the night, maybe they have a pool and a laundry room. Just the basics for road-trippers.

How I've always defined the difference in motels and hotels: If you access your room from the outside, it's a motel. If you access your room from inside in a hallway, it's a hotel.
Right. If you can drive up to the door of your room, that's a motel. Sometimes even branded a "Motor Inn". Lol. I have a strict rule to never again sleep in a motel after a couple of scary experiences as a kid. It is one of the few things about which I am not willing to be cheap!
I agree...“motel” means you access the doors to each room from the outside and “hotel” means you access the doors to each room from the inside (hallway).
I’m from Australia and did a 3 week, 3000+ mile Route 66 trip from Chicago to Vegas back in 2013 and it was so wonderful to watch this vlog and remember all the amazing places and sights. Thank you guys and stay safe
Great video! Being european, I'm sort of fascinated by all the quirky, little known tourist traps along those american roads. Also, "I kinda feel like we're back at Chernobyl" is an awesome line!
Oh, how I loved this. Route 66 is one of those uniquely American experiences. It really does sum up what this country is about. I don't think that people not from here can fully comprehend that, across 3,000 miles of land that is vastly different in weather and topography, you also see differences in other areas too: cuisine, culture, history, dialects, architecture and sheer personality. As you drive, it's like experiencing a kaleidoscope; all different but merging into one. More than anything else, driving across the US really does epitomize the "melting pot" that IS this country.
*Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything* - Charles Kuralt. Way to be intentional about seeing America how it's meant to be seen! Route 66 seems incredible!

Yep, Nate, motels are usually one story. They were intended to make it easy to pull off the road, park your car in front of your room and sleep for the night. Usually short stays and frequently not intended as a destination spot (but not always) When things settle down, try US 60, Arizona, New Mexico. Blue Ridge Parkway, in your neck of the woods, San Juan Skyway, Colorado ( on 4 wheels instead of 2) Peak to Peak Highway, Co in the fall. Independence Pass into Aspen in the fall. Lots more but these are ones I've travelled and enjoyed.
It’s a girl my lord in a flat bed Ford slowing down to take a look at me! Come on baby don’t say maybe! My husband and I drove through there last year. Had to roll down the windows and sing! I wonder if residents of Winslow Arizona hear all the tourists singing The Eagles as we drive through?

We always drive to Arizona during spring break and we have never gone and missed the Cadillac Ranch!! It’s alwayse sooo fun
“My wife’s braver than I am” -nate ❤️❤️🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️🤣❤️why’d I cry!!
Cause you care about them! That is amazing. As new travel vloggers having people that watch your videos care about you is the sweetest most meaningful thing!
You guys talking about the 'big' hail in Texas. My car was totaled out because we had hail bigger than golf balls. I've seen it bigger here.
The musical highway was epic when first done. Thus is my hometown. I'm touched to see you all here. Please come back soon!
Gali: “It’s PaPaw!!!” 😂 But Nate you got the hug!!! 😊
I did this back at the beginning of November. It was amazing!!! I did all the little tourist stops and it was so much fun. I-40 completely ruined Route 66, it is trying to make a come back though.
I'm thinking about this route for early spring next year! Really excited to watch you two travel down and see what it's like.
Lol I'm laughing so much because of the awe and surprise you have for the little things all of us who love here are used to like tumbleweeds and strong Texas winds!
thank you for being so respectful always and respecting all the guidelines in all the different states throughout your entire van life journey. i makes me love you and respect you two even more 💚💚💚💚💚
my family and I watch you guys every time you post a video (hopefully you don’t think I’m weird)
Far from weird! Glad y’all enjoy them ❤️
@@KaraandNate AHHAHAHAHAHHAH YOU RESPONDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Kara’s editing? 👏🏼👏🏼 👏🏼
@@robertwarren4248 what's wrong with you?
Hey Kara and Nate I was wondering if you were even going to travel to Maine and document it I think you would really like it.
@Samantha Duplisea yeah so many good restaurants and beautiful sights to see and so much nature
maybe they can stop by some things in New Hampshire too, they would definitely like it too.
@@adimayeu7851 yeah I've been there many times it super beautiful too
They were in Maine a while back doing a partnership with an RV rental company (I think). I don't remember exactly when it was, but you should be able to search Maine on their main page and find it.
But I agree, Maine is such an underrated gem! So so beautiful.
Yes!! Please come visit us in Maine!!
Nice to see you picked a calm day to visit Texas. And, yes, I grew up there. We moved to Mississippi 23 years ago and still do not miss the wind.
Hope you didn't miss "Standing On A Corner" in Winslow Az. Made famous by an Eagles song .
La Posada in Winslow is an awesome historic hotel. Many movie stars stayed there, and the art is wonderfully creepy.
So funny when Nate got out to see/film the tumbleweed 😂
My (then) husband and myself did this same thing when we moved from Seattle to Boise, ID. We saw one go across the road and we were SO excited! LOL! Kids... gotta love 'em.
Haha! As a British person, I absolutely love your British accent Kara!! I hope that's not how I sound to Americans though 😂😂
This one is by far my favorite vlog; only because knowing the fact that you both were 30 mins away from me in Williams and Two guns, and could have possibly passed through my town, Flagstaff. I’m a huge fan and have been watching for years. I love your vlogs and look forward to each week.
That is the greatest Audible ad I've ever watched! Love keeping up with you guys
British people on the accent : you go Kara
British people on pasta being called noodles : erm
I’m not even British and I made a face when she said noodles 🤣
I say noodles. It might be a regional thing.
They're egg noodles. It's a specific kind of pasta, but it isn't Italian, so it's kind of weird to call it pasta.
It actually felt like I was taking the road trip with y’all really good job 👍🏼
Hope everyone is having a good day. 😀
Thank you Alyssa, have a great day too :)
I'm glad you guys came through Abq! That road with the song is hard to find but is awesome when you do get it right
This child-like enthusiasm for life.... so endearing ! Your videos motivate me. Thanks much.
You guys had me laughing so hard trying to figure out the road 😂. Also for Nate: Hotel=one big building with doors leading inside; Motel=individual doors going outside!
