If we had had air conditioning back then, this story could never happen because everyone would have had their windows shut and curtains drawn. Nobody would be sleeping on the fire escape either. The story takes place during a heat wave. I also dearly love the original movie called simply "The Window". In that movie, it's a little boy trying to sleep on a fire escape during a heat wave, who witnesses a murder.
