A Hitchcock fan for many years. I watch his movies countless times. Each viewing is as exciting as the first. There's so much going on and so many details to appreciate . Hitchcock was a master movie director. Timeless entertainment. Many thanks to this epic channel.

I love Hitchcock and can't believe I never saw this. What an absorbing movie. Robert Donat never gets the credit he deserves even though he won an Oscar. Madeleine Carroll should have made more films in the U.S.
- A truly unique masterpiece. It shows that Hitchcock had "it" already in the beginning. Great choice of actors, atmospheric 1930's ambience and a successful retroish post-colorizing - deliberately not too well done. Plot was stunning combined with "Hitchcockian" shooting with it's angles and fleeting photographic, intense moments. Outstrips most contemporary spy movies with flying colours, even today. Not only HIGHLY recommended film - it's a MUST to watch.

A great ending there on the Statue of Liberty, giving a grateful tip of the hat to the French, whom Hitch admired. But. " The 39 Steps" is Hitch's finest hour...not one word or scene is out of place or redundant. The theme of being alone, or contrast to loneliness is a really mature depiction for Hitch at only 35 when he made " 39 Steps ". ( Hitch was born in 1899. ) I have seen all his films and this is my favorite with great performances by Madeline Carrol and. Robert Donat. .. Enjoy. !!!

This movie is just as wonderful and exciting today as it was in 1935. Yes it departs from the book, but that does not detract from the perfection of this film. I love the colorized version!
I watched it at a theater in Houston that had an art house Cinema upstairs.... It was 1979, I snuck in after the feature Escape from Alcatraz (Eastwood)
The few minutes from 1:06:29 onward are a masterclass in screenwriting. Talkies back then, and for a long time after, were absolutely stuffed with stilted, proper dialogue that in no way represented how the everyman spoke. But that entire conversation is compelling and free of stilted bullshit. Not only that, but it acts as a natural builder of chemistry between the leads. It's a scene that could've been out of a movie made 40 years later, save for the odd archaic expression or perspective, and it's effortlessly entertaining. Hitchcock's appreciation for and ability to identify a good screenplay is a massive reason why he soared as highly as he did. Bravo to everyone involved

We had The 39 Steps and Lord of the Flies in the 10th year at St. Columbas High School in New Delhi in 1973 as part our English Literature studies. Each pupil would read 5 pages aloud in class and the homework at the end of the week was to summarise the story so far. The best summary got an award.👏👏
I would like the comment but the 39 reacts is too appropriate haha. I'm making my way through AH films, only seen a handful so far. Watched Sabotage and The Man who Knew Too Much yesterday.
One of Hitchcock's best films, beautifully constructed with excellent acting by everyone, amazing cinematography. It's even better if you're born and raised in the U.K. to get all the references and feel of the culture and the times. Kids, put your little phones away, watch this film and all Hitchcock's others.
Donat is, as usual, excellent. He and Madeleine Carroll are so well matched here. This is a movie I keep coming back to, like the movie version of comfort food. But I never saw it in color. Wow! It's a whole different movie experience in color.
Robert Donat was a wonderful actor. The first film I saw him in was Goodbye Mr. Chips, he did such a fabulous job with the character of Schoolmaster Mr. Chips that I now watch everything that I see with him in it!

I know practically every frame of this film, having watched it countless times over the years. I'm a stickler for authenticity but, in this case, the colorization actually enhances the whole experience. It's a masterful film with so many stylish camera angles and inventive editing throughout. I will never tire of it and can now enjoy it in tasteful colour - one of the best conversions from b&w that I've seen.
Even Buchan, the author of the original '39 Steps' - quite different from the film version - was impressed with the changes. That's the ultimate compliment. Fwiw, the original story was a BBC broadcast in 1989. It's on YT and has an excitement all its own.
One of my favourite films. I love the humour that Hitchcock puts into his films. I recognise the mountains, which I have climbed. Much of the filiming took place in Glencoe.
Have watched this film many times so very good. The extra bonus for me is that my late husband is the image of Robert Donat. Everlasting memory for me!
Your team deserves great praise for the magnificent job you do. A lot of these films I've watched 50 times in black and white, and seeing them presented in color and with the picture clarity; it brings tears to my eyes as I watch them.

What a beautiful old classic gem of a movie with Donat and Madeleine Carroll. A beautiful Hitchcock movie done gracefully that is funny as well as thrilling with decency, dignity and respect in sharp contrast with the movies nowadays that are full of abhorrent violence, abominable sex scenes and with no real values. I watched the film a year ago and it's amazing how many new details you see. The dialog is limited to the necessity and it's out movement in every shot.

One of my all time favourites, madeline was born in my neck of the woods, West Bromwich, brilliant film watch it twice a week and I never gets bored of it.

Absolutely amazing movie... Proves that from whatever year, Hitchcock is THE MAN.... the ending is sensational, even today!!! Does not resemble ANY other early movie I've ever seen. Focus and color were far better than I expected. And Madeleine Carroll is a stunning beauty - with great legs. WOW. Michigan.
Carroll quit filmdom after her sister was killed in the London blitz and worked as an army nurse tending the wounded. Eisenhower was totally impressed with her.
The first of Hitchcock's blonds and far and away the most adorable (and best actress- especially enjoyed seeing her in another fabulous '30's movie- about an insurance company, yet(!): Lloyd's of London (which also introduced Tyrone Power)

This is a perfect movie. It all ends in the last scene as it opened w Mr. Memory!! Plus the plot and love story (hands grasping together finally) I cheer everytime like a lil kid Hooray!!!!
So many small, humanizing brushstrokes in this terrific film - from the very beginning. One of my favorites was the camera lingering on Margaret, the grumpy farmer's wife, after she helps Hannay escape. Rest in paradise ✨️ to Hitch and these stellar players ~ especially Robert Donat.

He was also nominated the year before for his portrayal of a poor country doctor who eventually makes good and begins to abandon his moral conscience in “The Citadel”. Another brilliant performance of his, that is a personal favorite of mine, was as a barrister in “The Winslow Boy” (1948 version). He was a wonderful actor who was hampered by ill health and crippling self doubt (I have no idea why).

This is a very clever spy movie- leave it to Hitchcock to find a good one, plus Donat and Carroll. Long before the world had spies everywhere during WWII, this one drew on imagination. You'd think the others made about WWII would be as good, especially with tons of true stories, but most were not, IMO. Love these oldies that make you THINK! TY- great post and HD.
Friendly discussion with friend who insisted the Coens are, in tandem, the best director. Type in the filmography of Alfred Hitchcock and count them. The brothers have a ways to go. 1935: incredible! Everyone else started a "step" behind, from his silents to Frenzy, you'll run out of fingers and toes.

Brilliant film, such amazing actors and actresses. I’m in awe of Richard Donet. First time I’ve watched a film with him in. The professors wife was in a film I watched yesterday. The Case of the Frightened Lady ( 1940 ). Another good film.
Wikipedia notes are right: Hitchcock appears at 6:59 walking in front of the bus Hanney and "Ms Smith" catch. From memory, in North by North West he gets baulked in catching a taxi at Fifth in front of the UN offices just after the intro overture credits.
..Hitch is trying to get on a public bus, but the driver slams the door on him so he is left on the sidewalk in despair. No cab involved. I hold the world's record of seeing North× Northwest"....over 850 times. !

Donat and More were excellent Hannah’s . I could not recognise Robert Powell as the great character.
One of my favourite films. I love the humour that Hitchcock puts into his films. I recognise the mountains, which I have climbed. Much of the filiming took place in Glencoe.
A bit at first was confusing but then it all made sense. Hitchcock knocked it out of the park again. Great movie !
Have watched this film many times so very good. The extra bonus for me is that my late husband is the image of Robert Donat. Everlasting memory for me!

Your team deserves great praise for the magnificent job you do. A lot of these films I've watched 50 times in black and white, and seeing them presented in color and with the picture clarity; it brings tears to my eyes as I watch them.

What a beautiful old classic gem of a movie with Donat and Madeleine Carroll. A beautiful Hitchcock movie done gracefully that is funny as well as thrilling with decency, dignity and respect in sharp contrast with the movies nowadays that are full of abhorrent violence, abominable sex scenes and with no real values. I watched the film a year ago and it's amazing how many new details you see. The dialog is limited to the necessity and it's out movement in every shot.

One of my all time favourites, madeline was born in my neck of the woods, West Bromwich, brilliant film watch it twice a week and I never gets bored of it.

I got a cheap old film colorizer program for around 60 pounds ,it's called Pixbim and it's dead simple to use.

It is his grace, which Hitch gives to him, that is his salvation throughout the film. Rare, and nice to see expressively portrayed.
Absolutely amazing movie... Proves that from whatever year, Hitchcock is THE MAN.... the ending is sensational, even today!!! Does not resemble ANY other early movie I've ever seen. Focus and color were far better than I expected. And Madeleine Carroll is a stunning beauty - with great legs. WOW. Michigan.
Carroll quit filmdom after her sister was killed in the London blitz and worked as an army nurse tending the wounded. Eisenhower was totally impressed with her.
The first of Hitchcock's blonds and far and away the most adorable (and best actress- especially enjoyed seeing her in another fabulous '30's movie- about an insurance company, yet(!): Lloyd's of London (which also introduced Tyrone Power)

@@jessiedoggie1Anny Ondra, the Czech girl in 'Blackmail', was the first blonde, though less self-posessed than Carroll, Kelly et al. There is an amusing clip of Hitch teasing and embarrassing Anny when testing the primitive sound equipment: 'Have you slept with men?' A hint of his sadistic streak.

This is a perfect movie. It all ends in the last scene as it opened w Mr. Memory!! Plus the plot and love story (hands grasping together finally) I cheer everytime like a lil kid Hooray!!!!
There have been other adaptations of the book but this is still the best
So many small, humanizing brushstrokes in this terrific film - from the very beginning.
One of my favorites was the camera lingering on Margaret, the grumpy farmer's wife, after she helps Hannay escape.

He was also nominated the year before for his portrayal of a poor country doctor who eventually makes good and begins to abandon his moral conscience in “The Citadel”. Another brilliant performance of his, that is a personal favorite of mine, was as a barrister in “The Winslow Boy” (1948 version). He was a wonderful actor who was hampered by ill health and crippling self doubt (I have no idea why).
A true classic. Consider the humor. It moves right along.
Hitchcock´s sense of timing in this picture is marvellous!
It really is. He pulled off so many great twists and suspenseful moments in less than 90 minutes

People were just recovering from WWI but Hotler was already working on his party. The Munich Coup was in 1933.

This is a very clever spy movie- leave it to Hitchcock to find a good one, plus Donat and Carroll. Long before the world had spies everywhere during WWII, this one drew on imagination. You'd think the others made about WWII would be as good, especially with tons of true stories, but most were not, IMO. Love these oldies that make you THINK! TY- great post and HD.
I adore hitchcocks films..this film although old exels in creating high standard plot and best direction which is hitchcocks speciality .

The final scene with the death of Mr. Memory and the long line of chorus girls behind him is one of the most beautiful shots in early Hitchcock.

Friendly discussion with friend who insisted the Coens are, in tandem, the best director. Type in the filmography of Alfred Hitchcock and count them. The brothers have a ways to go. 1935: incredible! Everyone else started a "step" behind, from his silents to Frenzy, you'll run out of fingers and toes.

I love all the 39 steps films, glad this one has been colourized. I dont suppose you have "While I live" do you and "The Warsaw Concerto" and others like it, have been wanting to see While I live for decades.

The professors wife was in a film I watched yesterday. The Case of the Frightened Lady ( 1940 ). Another good film.
Wikipedia notes are right: Hitchcock appears at 6:59 walking in front of the bus Hanney and "Ms Smith" catch. From memory, in North by North West he gets baulked in catching a taxi at Fifth in front of the UN offices just after the intro overture credits.
..Hitch is trying to get on a public

on him so he is left on the sidewalk
in despair. No cab involved.
