    Everything I know suggests that women who could hunt, jump etc sidesaddle must have been better riders than their male counterparts.

    • @priorattire
      @priorattire  11 месяцев назад +9

      Not necessarily- you could hunt sidesaddle and be rubbish- and do the same astride and also be rubbish. Different muscles used but the ability didn’t depend on the gender- but in the riders training, skill and experience

      I agree for the same results riding sideways is mind boggling to me!

    • @renaebettenhausen3611
      @renaebettenhausen3611 11 месяцев назад

      It seems to me that hunting, in particular, would be more difficult sidesaddle than astride, because a girl's back is to the entire right side of the horse, and shooting a gun could get a girl toppled off the horse entirely.

    • @Olga_Ovechkina
      @Olga_Ovechkina 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@renaebettenhausen3611 1) On horseback hunting, weapons, especially firearms, were used very rarely. Shooting while sitting on a horse is extremely inconvenient, because you can’t really aim while moving, plus both hands were needed to use a weapon at that time, and on a horse at least one hand is occupied with reins. And not every horse, even if it is taught to do this, will calmly endure a shot over the ear.
      2)Horseback hunting is usually done using dogs. The task of the riders in this case is to find and scare the animal, and then prevent it from leaving, forcing it to run towards the dogs that will catch it and kill it.
      Also, instead of dogs, they could hunt with birds of prey.
      3) You are wrong about turning the back. When riding in a side saddle, both the back, and the shoulders, and the hips should be turned perfectly even, and only the legs hang down to one side. If the shoulders or hips are turned to the side, this is a gross mistake and needs to be retrained to ride correctly.

    • @Olga_Ovechkina
      @Olga_Ovechkina 10 месяцев назад

      @@renaebettenhausen3611 By the way, given the design of the side saddle, it is much more difficult to fall out of it than from an ordinary one.

    Honestly I don't understand why people want to step into their skirts anyway. It's hard from a mobility perspective, gets the skirt dragging on the floor, needs to make it past the hips and pushes anything else you're wearing upwards. The only real application I can see is for a "lay your crinoline down and pre-arrange your skirts on top of it before pulling up the entire lot" trick.

    • @wednes3day
      @wednes3day 11 месяцев назад +2

      Also putting on over can ruffle hairstyles, be a pain for any makeup, jewelry, etc., is generally a bit disorienting .. and idk how much easier getting shoulders through is compared to hips?
      Not saying that there's a right way to do it, just noting the potential annoyances with going over. I do either depending 😊

      That's a personal choice. If you choose to follow all the latest trends, you probably can't afford quality pieces that you only wear for a season.
      If you seek out quality classic pieces eventually you will build a base wardrobe of good clothing that you can update with accessories and tops.
