Patients with acute radiation syndrome (ARS) classically go through four clinical phases: prodrome, latency, manifest illness, and either recovery or death. During the prodromal phase, they usually present with nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and even loss of consciousness at higher doses. With neurological symptoms like dizziness, headache, or decreased level of consciousness, occurring within minutes to a few hours, with an absence of vomiting, and is almost always fatal, even with aggressive intensive care. Most people who die from radiation sickness are killed by infections or internal bleeding. Dying from ARS is a terrible way to die. The Russian military’s contaminated equipment, vehicles, and soldiers will cause problems to neighboring Belarus, since the Russian troops are withdrawing through Belarus. Most modern armies have been training for NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) warfare decontamination situations. In a military nuclear decontamination cleaning station, it is assumed that a tactical nuclear weapon was used containing either Uranium or Plutonium that would produce limited battlefield contamination. The Chernobyl reactor disaster generated a multitude of radioactive isotopes of different elements from the reactor that had spread across the ground. Hiroshima and Nagasaki radiation contamination was cleaned up that used either Uranium or Plutonium, whereas the Chernobyl area had to be abandon. Parts of Belarus might have to be abandoned and isolated due to the Russian contaminated vehicles and equipment.

They probably didn’t even have Geiger counters. Common sense, that should have been something the soldiers would have been equipped with, considering the territory. But I also read somewhere that some soldiers didn’t even know Chernobyl happened. Like no clue there was a catastrophic nuclear meltdown that could have wiped out most of Europe. The “Iron Curtain” really lived up to its name.

Putin denied that USSR ever disbanded, his mind is in fairy town land, USSR was disbanded as a consequence of how bad the Chernobyl disaster was for its reputation. Putin knows nothing about nuclear physics. He is a spoiled kid similar to Trump who ate all his life from a silver spoon and can discard humans whenever he so chooses. He will only contemplate the consequences of his actions when a bullet is hitting his head. The day of philosopher-kings has dawned a long time ago or never existed in the first place.

These young Russian soldiers -- some said they had never heard about the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in the mid-80's. They were obviously not prepped correctly. Now -- due to further incompetence from the Russian generals and other military leaders giving instructions on faulty communications equipment --- these young soldiers will become very sick and -- who knows what will become of them. Meanwhile -- the site has been disturbed. Nuclear fallout dust has been stirred up, as reported. Now, with the higher radiation poisoning levels -- likely that there will be sickness or damage to most living things near the site.

This is probably the most activity that site has seen in years so it’s no wonder the levels spiked and got them sick! This is almost certainly digging up and otherwise kicking about contaminated dust. The radiation levels themselves (ie the the penetrating gamma radiation that doses you for being in the area) aren't that high outside of the reactor, but there is quite a bit of intermediate life-span isotopes contaminating the area. The issue isn't so much being in the area but inhaling or ingesting that dust. When inside the body alpha and beta particles which don't penetrate skin or clothing can do a lot of damage to cells and tissues they are accumulated in. This is stuff that's already been there since the incident and wouldn't have been an issue had they not kicked and dug up all that dust and slept in it. It doesn't pose much of an issue outside of the exclusion zone, but will likely require some mitigation efforts out of an abundance of precaution.

The powerplant workers for 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off and have no issues. That's right at the plant itself which has some of the highest readings. The red forest most security around know it's a hot zone. But other than that the dangers aren't what people think. Many visit the site illegally and stay in Pripyat while drinking the water from collected in a building, without any issues. The whole point of the exclusion zone is because of the hot spots and they don't want people tracking the contamination out of the zone. Those who know where the hotspots are could spend many months there without an isue

Any that did are likely from inhaling or ingesting radioisotopes of Cs and Sr. The radiation levels are certainly too low to do it through external exposure, but taking in significant amounts of stuff internally is a different story. These are both beta emitters and if taken internally can do quite a bit of damage. Half lives on these are on the order of 30 years. Probably wouldn't have happened at all if they hadn't happened to dig trenches in the most contaminated site available, and worn respirators when moving heavy equipment that kicks up lots of dust.
