  • CNN's Fred Pleitgen visits the abandoned Russian military positions in Chernobyl where Russian soldiers went into the Red Forest, the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, and brought back radioactive dust.
Ukrainians shocked by 'crazy' scene at Chernobyl after Russian pullout reveals radioactive contamination
Chernobyl, Ukraine (CNN)The sudden ear-piercing beep of a radiation meter fills the room as a Ukrainian soldier walks in. This is where Russian soldiers were living at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and radiation levels are now higher than normal.
There's no visible presence of the source of the radioactive material in the room, but Ukrainian officials say it's coming from small particles and dust that the soldiers brought into the building.
"They went to the Red Forest and brought radioactive material back with them on their shoes," soldier Ihor Ugolkov explains. "Other places are fine, but radiation increased here, because they were living here."
CNN was given exclusive access to the power plant for the first time since it came back into Ukrainian control.
Officials at the plant explain the levels inside the room used by Russian soldiers are only slightly above what the World Nuclear Association describes as naturally occurring radiation. One-time contact would not be dangerous but continuous exposure would pose a health hazard.
"They went everywhere, and they also took some radioactive dust on them [when they left]," Ugolkov adds.
It's an example of what Ukrainian officials say was the lax and careless behavior of Russian soldiers while they were in control of the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster. The area around Chernobyl, namely the Red Forest, is still the most nuclear contaminated area on the planet, with most of the radioactive particles present on the soil.

The Red Forest was so contaminated in areas that the trees died but didn't rot because most of the microbes and wildlife died, the Soviets had to dig up and bury the most contaminated trees and topsoil.
Absolutely not an area you want to start digging trenches and bunkers in.
I'm so impressed with the engineers at the facility, they knew they had a job to do despite the war situation and kept at it, trying to keep the generators running and monitor the stored material as best they could.

In 1986, a huge area around the reactor had such high levels of fall-out in the top soil, they dug up all the topsoil and buried it under itself, to stop radioactive dust being spread by the wind.
That topsoil remains radioactive for centuries. You start digging trenches and foxholes in that area, you will dig it up.
And, unless you're very, very well protected, which is unlikely, it will kill you.
These Russians are insane, or were, soon.

I'm a radiation protection expert and I think this video was well done. 11.3 microSievert per hour is indeed significant, but not really dangerous. It is the maximum a radiation worker may receive during work hours for a full year before reaching the dose limit. The evidence for radiation induced damage starts at 200,000 microSievert. I don't expect the Russian soldiers have received that amount or more, but I don't have sufficient data to be 100 percent certain.

BUT if the place is filled with dust that you breath in, ingest, that gets tou your eyes, then it is a whole different thing. So, 11.3 is a lot, but not scary. If it was cadmium or carbon, then it's worse, and cadmium might be still present in red forrest, where dust from evaporated rods stays. Though i doubt it makes full 11uSv, perhaps only 1% of that is cadmium.

You should not have those high readings at your workplace "regular"

Readings from 2005 in the Red Forest showed radiation levels up to 10mSv/h.
While a more recent drone survey still showed 1,2mSv/h at the top soil in that region.
If the russian ration is already emanating 10 uSv/h (microsieverts per hour)

Oleksandr Lobada, a radiation safety supervisor at the station has said that down in the basement of the main building, are dormitory-style rooms that have been completely ransacked. The floor is littered with rugs, mattresses, clothes, shoes, and other personal belongings of the Ukrainian national guard who were held there. Officials at Chernobyl say Russian soldiers looted what they could when they left, and they also took the captive members of the national guard with them. We were able to keep the site safe. But it's upsetting that they took 169 of our military.
It's not confirmed where the men are being held, but Chernobyl's staff believe they are in Russia.
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's former president, visited Chernobyl on Friday with food and other supplies for the plant's personnel. Access to it has only just opened up through an off-road track. The bridge to Chernobyl was blown up to stop Russia's advance.

Patients with acute radiation syndrome (ARS) classically go through four clinical phases: prodrome, latency, manifest illness, and either recovery or death. During the prodromal phase, they usually present with nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and even loss of consciousness at higher doses. With neurological symptoms like dizziness, headache, or decreased level of consciousness, occurring within minutes to a few hours, with an absence of vomiting, and is almost always fatal, even with aggressive intensive care. Most people who die from radiation sickness are killed by infections or internal bleeding. Dying from ARS is a terrible way to die. The Chernobyl reactor disaster generated a multitude of radioactive isotopes of different elements from the reactor that had spread across the ground. Low level radioactive contamination can be blocked by clothing and even the human skin. Inhaling or ingesting the radioactive contamination will acutely affect the internal organs which has no protection against the low level radiation emitted by the contamination and will damage organs and internal lining and cause bleeding.

It's close to Belarus's border and, let's be real, no one was going to attack it. Had they actually used basic safety practices, it wouldn't have been a bad place to be. But they didn't.

What is disconcerting is that the Russians left with the staff etc they kept hostage, and reports from Russia mentioned admitting soldiers for radiation sickness begging the question where are the rest of the hostages? The way things are going they may be reunited with family in Russia or in a ditch somewhere between Chernobyl and the Hospital they were admitted.

Reactor 4 hasn’t been running since the explosion. I believe they still use the rest of the plant to provide power still tho.

11-12 μSv/h is not really that bad in itself. BUT if one digs in the dirt, breath in the dust sleep with the dust and dirt all around then it can start to be a big problem.

They lived there for weeks. There are reports that some have already died. But since they moved to Belarus, no real evidence is available, of course.

You are correct. It would be interesting to know how high the radiation levels are in the trenches they were digging.

They even burned the wood at fireplaces. Probalby sitting in the smoke and enjoying the heat.
It is not suprising that not all of them knew. But if of the whole unit only one guy would have known, they would have never done this. What this means is 100% of all the soldiers were totally clueless. That's a shocking statement for the russian education system.

Remember this is "one of the top 2 most powerful and advanced military powers" but someone in command said (and no one disagreed) "big radioactive place go boom boom, no one live here anymore because the radioactivity can be deadly?! Let's dig into the radioactive soil and post up here!"

Do people here understand that radiation lessens over time? The radiation in the soil is nowhere near enough to cause any major ailment, maybe at worst soldiers threw up or have like a .1 higher risk of cancer. The nuclear activists their great allies oil, gas, and coal companies have managed to convince everyone that anything nuclear is incredibly dangerous and will kill us all, the result of this is climate change, cancer, and war over these fossil fuels.

@@oscaralexander2416 It is the fallout/ radioactive dust that they disturbed and therefor likely inhaled. If you think inhaling fallout will only make you "throw up", you might have acute radiation syndrome affecting your brain.
