Airborne units are not meant to partake in heavy, multi-day fighting. As a former member of the 82nd myself, we were, AT MOST going to sustain ourselves for 48 (MAYBE 72) hours before "follow-on" forces arrived and reinforced or replaced us. Seizing an airfield is one thing but seizing and holding a TOWN is a completely other matter. Even if our entire BCT jumped in, we would not have the manpower (or fire power) to take and hold a city! That's insane!

And his international haute couture! Can't forget the jacket he wore at his propaganda rally that cost more than the average russian's yearly income! He may not be the antichrist, but he's definitely the anti-Robin Hood! Steal from the poor and keep all the wealth for one's self is the dictator's creed.
This highlights the difference between democracies and dictatorships, between liberals and conservatives, between good and evil! Conservativism is a disorder caused by traumatic events in early childhood: trauma, accidents, neglect, and all kinds of abuse. Anything that causes fear and triggers the amygdala (the brain's fear center) leads to the formation of conservatives. Here's a list of reputable sources that explain this phenomena...
The antivaxxers, the anti-maskers, the insurrectionists, those who have been displaying inappropriate behavior are very damaged people. When babies aren't protected, loved, and cared for properly they experience fear and it reshapes their brains. Their amygdalas are triggered by trauma, neglect, and abuse, becoming overly large and affects their thoughts and behaviors negatively. The abhorrent behavior seen on January 6th, the Karen's behaving hysterically, etc are people who have experienced horrors in one shape or another early in their lives and can't cope with reality very well. They're annoying, they're irritating, their behavior is disgusting, but that's because they are physiologically and psychologically damaged people.
Here are reliable sources that explain and demonstrate this phenomenon...
Trauma, neglect, and/or abuse in early childhood overstimulates the amygdala (the brain's fear center) causing it to grow huge and results in aberrant thoughts and behaviors. This is damage you can LITERALLY SEE IN A BRAIN SCAN!
Read the peer reviewed research on the fMRI differences between conservatives and liberals. Here's a little help; conservatives have larger amygdalas and liberals have larger anterior cingulate cortexes. Amygdala = fear. Anterior cingulate cortex= higher level, complex thinking.
Red brain, blue brain: evaluative processes differ in Democrats and Republicans.

Here is the thing about elite units:
They are extremely good and extremely valuable for the purpose that they are designed for. This is a parachute/ airborne regiment equipped with lightly armored vehicles, which is elite in deploying quickly and launch an organized attack with short preparation time to accomplish a specific task like taking a certain enemy position.
It is not the first time in history that such a unit was effectively dissolved by having been given a task where their elite capabilities are neither required nor matter.
For the broader task that was given, they were simply the wrong choice.
When you need numbers and a variety of capabilites and instead you send one elite division, it is bound to end in a catastrophe.

The Ukrainian soldiers were encircled and given the ultimatum to lay down their weapons for safe passage to withdraw from the city they did and in doing so were hit by artillery. There are a lot of Ukrainian families who finally feel avenged. Good has prevailed.

The THREE DAY VICTORY OF PUTIN...became the 3 month rout...retreat. BECAUSE OF THEM. NOT US.

General rule of thumb regarding casualties - get the number of killed in action then multiply it by three to get the number of wounded. So with about a hundred killed and three hundred wounded from a regiment of 1,500 is approximately a casualty rate of 25 percent. Even for elite units, casualty rates at that level, plus the morale impact of the loss of its commander and the likely loss of equipment in combat, this unit is probably combat ineffective thus necessitating its withdrawal to a rear area for reconstitution.

Or is it your self-righteousness that is showing itself throught these little "mistakes" or "approximations", followed by these aloof, almost propagandistic statements? And what exactly is nationalistic about Russia today, or about this terrible war? Imperialistic, perhaps, or definitely schizophrenic, if you'd ask me.
I'm from Belarus, and this war affects me way more than it does most people here in comments. I truly passionately hate it, and I hate the Russian government. And you know it's funny how for such a long time in Europe and US Russians or some other Eastern Europeans were made into boogeymen, it's been going on for centuries. In a lot of cases, we (slavs) are one of the last ethnic groups in the west about which you can openly air out pretty xenophobic statements. Can't easily call Muslims or Arabic states backwards in the same way, not when your colleagues or employers can see it, not in the "free media".
The pompousness of your post made me a bit sick. Pretty tired of westerners on their high-horses, because they are full of shit, so much so that they might start exploding soon enough. So much for your epic democracies and human rights with what happened in Yugoslavia. But I guess that was a 1000 years ago.
Also, I really wish Bidens weren't laundering money in Ukraine, while feeding them a bit too much false promises. I wish that Ukranian and Russian politicians and oligarchs weren't able to buy all these luxury goods in EU and real estate in UK, and that it wouldn't take decades and a war for these assets frozen and investigated. I could go on for long time.

Airborne units are typically very well trained and motivated, but there's always the issue of being "too light to fight" with heavier units. High mobility makes for difficult tradeoffs. I vaguely remember that a US 105mm howitzer being airlifted goes with about 50 rounds until regular supply can be established. That's not a lot, and thus there is generally a high dependence on close air support. As I understand it, the Ukrainians were very well prepared also from an anti-air perspective, taking away even more capability from the Russians.
There's really no recovery from such poor planning based on wishful thinking (e.g., this would come off like Czechoslovakia in 1968).

Also what a difference, a Prez who stands his ground, and doesn't take off in a chopper with all his loot (Afghanistan).
Ukr gives me hope for civilisation, men fighting, women / kids sent to safety, and the LGBTQI+ community given heavier handbags to swat the Russians (that's a joke). Also different to countries with a cult religion.

@N Fels how do you rank the Russian elite forces? I mean surely there's a point where a mission can be turned down by a senior officer(s)? Dashing from one country to another without any sat-nav equivalent through wide long streets in light infantry vehicles seems monumentally stupid and a huge gamble. If I'm a Russian planner I've got to have the Intel and knowledge that stingers,NLAWS and javelins have poured into the Ukraine and any mad sprints for the capital without infantry and close air support adds up to morale boosting ambushes with these weapons.
Why did Russia under estimate Ukraine since 2014 they've had the best NATO training the Brits alone have trained 20,000 NCOs It was obvious in my layman mind that the Ukrainians would hedge on defending the capital and so they did. Hostomel as well seemed like a Hollywood film script who in their right mind dumps plane loads of elite soldiers on a flat surface with not artillery. Mind boggles fantastically
      Ridiculous.

To destroy a unit, you do not need to kill everyone. Injured, too tired, loss of morale are factors in unit combat readiness. If you put all of that together unit may be destroyed as combat element in as little as 10% dead... Usually that would mean around 40% are injured, rest will have morale issues or just too tired to carry on.

When I was in Vietnam the worse thing we had to run into was Snipers. If you did you just pulled back and call in an airstrike. Imagine that, a half million dollars to get just one sniper. But if you went in there to get him on foot then you could count on 3-4 more dead before you got him. Ukraine can do the same thing with well trained snipers. A sniper can make your life miserable in more ways than one.

Really depends on the details. I remember reading that in the late stages of the 1944 St. Lo campaign, some American companies were fighting while reduced to the size of understrength platoons.

    • @klonik79
      @klonik79 2 года назад +1

@@Spaghetter813 Yes. I know, that's why I used may. US troops were heavily morale boosted by seeing with their own eyes that reports they were fed before landing were actually not overblown but omitted too much . As most of them being devout believers in fight of good and evil ( no matter religion they adhered to) they wanted to uproot that evil once and for all . It is easier to keep morale when you for 100% know you are ethically on high ground and there is whole might of your country behind you. On other side, RU soldiers are one doing atrocities, most of them do not want to be there, even in RU, as anywhere else, most psychopats run for politics (uncapable ones) or for Industry leadership (though capable ones are crushed there), they do not feel support of their country (it is sort of hard to feel support when you do not have spare socks, MRE you get is older than you and your CO is obviously useless idiot). These two armies are exact opposites in term of how they support their morale and eagerness to fight.
