Man, I knew why I like you. I hate it when people call someone "talented" when they are clearly "skilled". Being talented takes nothing, being skilled takes work. Talent just makes it easier to BECOME skilled.

Definition of talent is having a natural skill for something so you're talking about the same thing. Becoming skilled is what you were talking about

Agreed. I’ve seen hundreds of bands live and seeing them was probably the greatest live musical experience I’ve ever had. The music at face value is heavy, but when you dove in to the nuts and bolts it’s absolutely magic.
The time signatures, the synchronization, and the sheer nature of their music is nuts.
      Amazing.

  • @xchakeix

Danny is arguably the best drummer in the world and they have him center stage live. The last time I saw them Maynard, the lead singer, was on platforms at the back of the stage, letting the instrumentalists have the main focus and Danny was in the center with the lights on him, the bassist and guitarist on either side him. I've seen them 3 times now and cannot recommend the live show enough. This song in particular is fabulous live.
The reason you can pinpoint the rhythm is because there are multiple rhythms. They are masters at polyrhythms. No one can do what they do.

I wanna say, another reason DC is the goat...fist, most drummers don't even explore their minds deep enough to even create something of this caliber, and secondly, if you put any other drummer in his shoes during the breakdown- they would have hit all the pads/toms max volume and try to spam double bass to appear like they have control or power or even skill to pull it off, but DC has that velocity control, we know and he knows he has power, but he controls it better than most if not all. He doesn't just hit shit, he puts emphasis behind that control and tasteful at that. the Ghost notes, the softer hits in between the power shots. all of it is high caliber. An example of what I'm talking about is when Chad Smith was on drumeo and he stopped the host from playing his groove. The host was shook and said it's exactly what Chad had played.. while he was correct, he was also incorrect. Sure he hit the same notes, but he didn't have velocity control on those notes to put emphasis on the groove's feel. In the same sense as a boxer setting up his big hit with a small jab.. you can't just throw that jab like a haymaker.. People sleep on this skill too much, way too much.

The reason you can't pinpoint the rhythm in the verses is that it's an additive pattern leading up to a sequence of 33/8 (3+3+3+3+2+3+3+3+3+2+3+2), if I'm not completely mistaken. Like you said, polyrhythm is e.g. around 9:30 when he plays 3/8 with the sticks while keeping a 4/4 on the hihat. It's almost a relief when he goes to a straight 4/4 on the chorus…

Danny Carey's drumming is the best example of Neil Peart's legacy. His drumming is pure composition and becomes an integral part of the musicality of the song not just time keeping and banging the drums (which can work when needed).

The thing about Tool is that they not only jump around time signatures, they also all individually hit a various times that are unconventional. So, sometimes the guitar will hit on an "and" count when the rest of the band is hitting on a 2 or a 4 count. They all know exactly where they are in the song and all play their own time regardless of what everyone else is doing.
Edit: Also, in this song, Danny Carey plays no less than 4 different rhythms at the same time. One rhythm for each limb.

    starting at roughly 1:18
    two bars 7/4
    one bar 5/8
    played 4x then a variation:
    one bar 4/4
    one bar 9/8
    one bar 4/4
    two bars 7/4
    one bar 5/8
accents are often on beat 2 of the 7/4 bars.
