Maynard has NPD (narcissistic personality disorder), he sings about it this and many other songs. This song is about his relationship with his ex wife.
These guys literally changed everything i knew about music, their time signatures are captivating and lure you in like a fish on a hook.. you could play Opiate all the way to Fear inoculum and be memorized for hours. They have been my favorite band for the last 25 years. It's fun to see younger generation see what we the Tool army have tried to tell you about how good they're.
🤘🌀🤘Tool’s entire catalogue is all bangers, imo. I’ve been a huge fan since I heard their first EP Opiate, and I’ve seen them live 6 times. Much like Pink Floyd, you have to listen to their music with headphones to fully appreciate all the intricacies in their music, particularly anything after their second album Aenima. Maynard’s other projects, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, are also worth a listen. Volto is another band to check out, which features Danny Carey, the drummer from Tool. Volto is a jam band. You should definitely check out the drum cam video for “Pneuma” to see what Danny does up close. He is one of the best to ever sit behind a kit. Yes, Tool is still making music, and if the rumours are true, should have new material within the next year or so. If you like wine, look for Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards. That is Maynard’s wine company. You can order it online, if that’s allowed where you live. Also, Maynard’s biography “A Perfect Union of Contrary Things” is a good read.
I love this song. I had the pleasure of seeing them play it live in Dublin Ireland in 2022. For that scream (26 seconds long) Maynard walked to the back of his podium , grabbed the rail, head down, took in a huge deep breath walked to the front, grabbed the mic and screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeamed. I’m going to see them in Birmingham , England in May. Cannot wait. Great reaction Spiral out 🌀
Spot on analysis! Now that you started down this rabbit hole, you should start from the beginning. Every song is its own journey, and they are all great. If you start from the beginning, you will see the progressive growth within the band. From pure angst to enlightenment. First is the EP Opiate. Then Undertoe. ÆNIMA. Lateralus. 10thousand days. Then finish with Fear Inoculum! It's by far the best way to do it. Your favorite Tool song is the one you're currently listening to...
This was the first song on the first album i heard from tool and from the first notes i was hooked! 23 years later this album still is the greatest masterpiece of music i ever heard! From the beginning to the end Lateralus is perfect for me! Love this band
Tool released the majority of their music in the mid nineties and early two thousands. The then took a 14 year hiatus from recording new music. Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer focused on his on his other two bands during that time. They made a triumphant return in 2019 with “Fear Inoculum.” The main reason I believe they waited so long to record an album had to do with their record contract, and they waited it out to be free from it so they could better control their music. They did tour during the 14 years, just didn’t release new material. They are also a band that will go a minimum of 4 years between albums, because quality is vital and they won’t settle for something that isn’t exactly what they want. The members are all in their 60s now I believe, but age has t slowed any of them down. They are one of the greatest rock bands of all time no questions asked.
Love it, love the live reaction while you were doing it and had to watch it again. I am glad you are starting down the Tool rabbit hole, and am happy to help facilitate. Great reaction as usual. Hope to join the next live reaction as well.
So here for your Tool journey! I know you’ve heard pneuma but please check out the drum cam- we’ll watch that too- it’s incredible watching Danny do his thing!
Tool = a band of misfits that tried to be funny and ended becoming legends. AR if you like lyrics, this is your band. Lwt your boy Black P, in on the secret hw might enjoy the lyricism as well. Keep going - 🌀Spiral Out🌀
Tool has been around 30 years so they’re are probably the influencer to many bands and their time signatures go all over the place witch makes them TOOL
An interesting paradox happened when music streaming services were created. Several bands like Tool took quite a while to work through the legalities of putting their music on these services, meanwhile a younger generation abandoned traditional “radio stations”. That opened this alternate reality where a 10-15 year generation of people straight up missed out on bands like Tool and Metallica almost entirely. Now we’re seeing this RUclips influx of people being exposed to music many of us grew up on, for the first time some 20 years later, and being blown away. I’ve been going down this long rabbit hole of finding more and more people reacting to Tool via RUclips and I just can’t stop lol. I can’t hear Tool for the first time again… but in some weird way I’m getting to relive it through the ears of others. It’s like seeing your child take their first steps… over and over and over again!
This song grows on you. It takes Saturn roughly 33 years to make a complete revolution around the sun. Maynard uses this to time as a reference for growth and self forgiveness. To put away old ways begin a new journey in life.
Tool rarely plays 4/4 timing and that’s what you’re hearing /feeling. I think The Grudge is mostly 10/8 (or 5/4 or 5/8 depending on how you want to count… I count 10/8). Schism is a catchy 5/8 + 7/8 cycle. Lateralus has a 7/8 + 8/8 + 9/8 chorus. Sometimes the drums are playing a different time signature over the guitar and bass. You just never know what to expect 👍
Hands down....the best experience at a show, I've ever had. Even when Maynard just had a Mullet Mohawk and used to cuss out the crowd ..oh wait he still does that 😅. Tool - Where no one ever solos alone.
I love this Tool song and the meaning …oh are they active? Wellll… it takes about 10 years to get a new album so…..us Tool fans are used to a long wait 😂
What you said around 10:10: Yes, that's the meter (or time signature) changes. They will string together e.g. one bar of 4, one of 5, then 4 again, then 7… before (maybe) starting over again
Tool uses a combination of odd or unusual time signatures (something other than 4/4), polyrhythms and time signature changes, most of which are hallmarks of progressive rock. Syncopation is a thing, and absolutely spices up more average rhythms, but I think what you were saying you liked is the unusual time signature. Their song Lateralus incorporates all of these and if you haven't reacted to that, I highly recommend it. Also, I know you did Pneuma already, but as others have suggested, there is "Vic Firth drum cam" video of the band playing that song live, and it's incredible. If you want to see Danny Carey's amazing use of polyrhythms, check that one out. Also, the next song that was about to play was 46 & 2, another absolute banger, highly recommended.
Like and a sub for the Tool ride! If you really like Tool, I recommend going through their discography chronologically. I will be here for every Tool reaction! Tool is therapy for me, The grudge reminds me to let go of hate, anger and anything I am holding against anyone. I choose higher values over lower ones (Choose 1 or 10).
Just some suggestions of some of my TOOL favs: - Stinkfist - Forty Six & 2 - Vicarious - Aenema - Jambi - Right in two - Parabol + Parabola (both songs together) - Descending - Invincible - 7empest - Eulogy - Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (both songs together)
My Tool adventures started in 2000. Started out as a kid listening to whatever my dad had on, ( usually AC DC, Scorpions, stuff like that, and then i foumd a beastie boys tape in our home stereo, oof) was late to the game as well. They started my journey through metal and I haven't looked back since. Metal is a great ...tool.... in my melodic journeys. Drumnbass, hip hop, black metal, deathcore, some numetal at the moment. Saw Tool last week amd The grudge was awesome. He did the scream at the end, but for half the time. It was a beautiful thing.
Yes!! Tool is the greatest band of all time. There's not alot of bands out there this dynamic and amazing. Pink Floyd, and a couple others man. Tool!!!
Also, the thing you are referring to with the beats always landing where to aren’t expecting them to. That’s a Tool signature. They use many abnormal time signatures, and not just the standard 4/4 that most mainstream music adheres to. Because they are sometimes going back and forth between 2 different time signatures, you get that slightly off kilter rhythm. They are also very big on syncopation and polyrhythms, so even if they are in a more ordinary time signature you won’t easily catch it and it won’t sound ordinary. They also like to keep most of their rhythms in counts of 3 and 2 meaning that instead of just being in a 5/4 time signature where the beats with count 5 equal beat, they will count it out as 3 beast followed by 2 and it will seem complex that way 1-2-3, 1-2. Instead of 1-2-3-4-5.
23 second glorious scream. Important to know that the instrumental parts are written without Maynard who then builds the lyrics and vocals around it. Refrains how you hear them. If you're riding the Tool spiral, there are only 5 albums. You should now start at the start and take the full journey.
Ive only ever had 2 musical obsessions, first it was Linkin Park, then Tool. Their approachs to music are very different, at times even diametrically opposed, but there more similarities than youd think. I always appreciate when someone picks up on that
There's two videos you should get around to eventually. Parabol/Parabola and Vicarious, but after a few listens of each. They're not like Schism or Sober
I like that ur entire list of similarities GOT some influence from TOOL, I can recall alot of interviews throughout the years and most of those bands specifically saying it
You better do a deep dive into Tool immediately. The Tool Army will boost your channel and you will listen to the best band that's made hard rock. roll with it!!!!!
Tool has been in my top 3 since well a long damn time. Pink Floyd is another with a similar feel in the writing, in my opinion. A softer tone but still the deep lyrics and a psychedelic feel. Neither in a hurry or hung up on traditional song structure
The reason it can feel like the music has extra bars or delayed measures, is actually just because you haven't found the pulse. They dont make it easy to find but once you do, everything clicks, nothing sounds out of place anymore.
You can have stranger correlations than Tool with Linkin, Soundgarden (syncopation's there bigtime) or Korn. I remember listening to Purity Ring, trying to figure out why I really liked their two albums and I realized that Meghan's sort of flirtatious sarcasm reminded me of Mike Muir's sort of 'two fingers in the air' showboating in Suicidal Tendencies. Obviously they look and sound nothing alike but I realized that I imported something that I liked in ST into my listening experience of Purity Ring.
It’s song writing in odd time signatures. It’s not 1-2-3-4 mostly which is called common time. Most of TOOL’s music could be counted in 5 or 7 or even combinations of different time signatures. That’s TOOL !!!
All those tweaks in the riff A-Ray calls out in Adam's riffs makes Tool's catalog rank high for re-listenability. Because after catching onto the riff you can hear Danny and Justin attacking the melody on a different & complimentary side. Then turning back to Adam I'll catch little easter eggs and tasty fills all around the melody. Then repeat for Danny and Justin. That's all before I even hear WTF Maynard's spitting.
Bro.....tool...one Word.... Tool Army 😊...react to the best Mixed Song in the whole world.....invicible !!!!!....and the best Song from tool...decending🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
I'm really glad you are continuing to dive into Tool. It was mentioned in your live stream, but Karnivool is a good prog rock band to check out. They are like Australia's version of Tool (not that they sound identical, or ripped Tool off, but if you check them out, you'll see what I mean).
I know everyone doesn't want to spam tool reactions and stuff but we're here for it man. Just experience it in whatever way it comes to you, but definitely when you start and album, finish it
Tool uses lots of polyrhythms, for example the drummer may play a 3/4 while the guitar and bass play 4/4 and at some point it will meet up. That’s what you are hearing.
There is a lot of “rock” and other subtypes… TOOL can be classified as “progressive”…. There isn’t about group with their sound and intentionality to be art…. Love watching folks find this band 🤘🏼🌀 Great reactions bro!
The reason why the riff seems to skip is because this song is in 5/4 time, so there's literally an extra beat per measure than you're used to hearing in "standard" music with 4/4 time. 👍🏽😁
Tool is my number 1, but Sevendust. Truth killer album. My Tool thumbs up list is just as big as my Sevendust list spotify only. But you have to steer clear of the 90s. Sevendust was dope in the 90s but Truth Killer I cannot stop listening to. Just came out in July of last year. Happy to recommend songs from any of the two, Sevendust or Tool. Sevendust is a close 2.
Oh! on the beatbox side Tioneb. No love for Tioneb other than BBk in the videos. I don't speak french but his 7 decent tracks are decent. We all need Tioneb to come back. Watch just Tioneb in the battles. Granted he didn't beat Saro. But he was up against Saro. TIONEB!
More Tool!!!! haha maybe try some songs by Karnivool otherwise known as the Australian Tool. Start with Themata but their magnum opus is without a doubt the album sound awake! its amazing! Love the content matey!
I didn't know Nike was making Aesop Rock shirts. But here you are wearing. You should react to Aggressive Steven. The finest hip hop storyteller America has to offer.

Well said been a huge fan since 92. The best band I’ve ever heard.
Not just everything you knew, they changed music as we know it.

Tool is the fucking shit. You need to react to more!
Tool predates Korn by 3 years, Linkin Park by six years. However, Chris Cornell formed Sound Garden six years before Tool formed.
It’s Alchemy, transmutation.
Welcome to the Tool Army! It doesn't take long to get hooked. Great reaction, thank you!

Fun fact-T00L guitarist Adam Jones worked with The Eagles lead guitarist Joe Walsh to make the talk box for songs like 'Jambi' etc.
The way I heard it is the members of Tool wondered why no one was playing music they'd like to hear, then started making music they like.
So here for your Tool journey! I know you’ve heard pneuma but please check out the drum cam- we’ll watch that too- it’s incredible watching Danny do his thing!
Tool sounds like no other band. They are truly something special. Great reaction. 🌀🤘

Poly-rhythm is time signatures changing, but still flowing in transition. They are masters of this.
Digging your reactions re Tool... you are going straight down the spiraling rabbit hole of eargasms... im so happy!!!! 💖
Tool came out in the grunge era but was way ahead of their time
Tool rarely plays 4/4 timing and that’s what you’re hearing /feeling. I think The Grudge is mostly 10/8 (or 5/4 or 5/8 depending on how you want to count… I count 10/8). Yep… seeing them again next Friday.

Can confirm, Vegas was wild
💯
I love this Tool song and the meaning …oh are they active? Wellll… it takes about 10 years to get a new album so…..us Tool fans are used to a long wait 😂
Bro! You will love Jambi!!!!!
If you love lyrics and songwriting, Tool is as deep as it goes. Finding out what the deeper meaning to his lyrics is eye opening
What you said around 10:10: Yes, that's the meter (or time signature) changes. They will string together e.g. one bar of 4, one of 5, then 4 again, then 7… before (maybe) starting over again

You should do pneuma by tool with the drum cam again. You will lose your mind seeing dany Carey drum

The single best opening track on the greatest album ever composed, it's not even describable for most!
Ive only ever had 2 musical obsessions, first it was Linkin Park, then Tool. Their approachs to music are very different, at times even diametrically opposed, but there more similarities than youd think. I always appreciate when someone picks up on that
Mars Volta is a crazy band and something you have never heard before. Its what would happen is Slayer, Miles Davis, and Salsa band had a child
Chester Benington days of Lincoln Park, we hear you ...
8:00 Thats interesting because this album came out right around the same time as Linkin Park’s album, Hybrid Theory.
That's 46&2 that started playing! Another banger
I was like, is this Grudge? Now it sounds TOOL!
There's two videos you should get around to eventually. Parabol/Parabola and Vicarious, but after a few listens of each. They're not like Schism or Sober

you feel like it's missing a note because the bar is in 5/8, and you're expecting a 6/8 beat. haha
Once you go Tool, you can never go back!! I'm finally subbing for your Tool reactions. ❤
Btw, the film The Grudge was released three years after Tool's song
You better do a deep dive into Tool immediately. The Tool Army will boost your channel and you will listen to the best band that's made hard rock. roll with it!!!!!
Tool has been in my top 3 since well a long damn time. Pink Floyd is another with a similar feel in the writing, in my opinion. A softer tone but still the deep lyrics and a psychedelic feel. Neither in a hurry or hung up on traditional song structure

It's the perfect song about holding a grudge and what it can do to you.
bro said "Grunge, I've heard that term before". Thanks for making feel a million years old lol
Tool preceded all the bands you named. Tool influenced all these bands.
Tool has had a 34 year career on only 5 album releases and a single 5 song EP. They're the epitome of perfectionism.
This band is more philosophical than any band I’ve ever come across. Hey are like 1000 therapy sessions in one song.
Tool was around way before any of those bands you mentioned so in reality they all reminded you of Tool
what the frick im missing all the live streams with Tool requests Gawd darn it and it says I have notifications on too ughh
All those tweaks in the riff A-Ray calls out in Adam's riffs makes Tool's catalog rank high for re-listenability. Nice we got are selfs a fresh one guys lol Tool Rabbit Hole
Fuk those other videos. I agree.
Vicarious and Descending are both fantastic tracks. You'll love them!
You mix 90’s tool, nirvana, NIN, pantera, cypress hill and RATM in a blender, you get pretty much the entire rock/metal 2000’s.
Love this. Enjoy your journey with Tool.

I absolutely agree that Tool

Grey Daze and old LP was my childhood
..................tool army est.1993..............tool army est.1993................tool army est.1993.............tool army est.1993..........
It’s pretty sick seeing someone react to these songs for the first time. Brings me back to the first time I heard this as a 13 year old kid
I know everyone doesn't want to spam tool reactions and stuff but we're here for it man. Just experience it in whatever way it comes to you, but definitely when you start and album, finish it
My older sister decided it'd be funny to throw me into CPTSD by showing me the movie Jaws when I was seven. I know the feels brother.
You are hearing Korn, Linkin Park and many other 90s grunge, new metal and progressive metal because of Tool.
Bro do the Tool catalogue you won't regret
Definitely do more Tool. Great reaction!
Tool uses lots of polyrhythms, for example the drummer may play a 3/4 while the guitar and bass play 4/4 and at some point it will meet up. That’s what you are hearing.
Love me some Tool, Love Ren as well, we seem to have a similar taste in music Mr Ray
To check more prog rock, especially a band that's a huge direct influence on Tool, look at King Crimson.
if you care about pen my man, you're gonna have a field day analysing the lyrics to "the pot". The beat slaps too.
There is a lot of “rock” and other subtypes… TOOL can be classified as “progressive”…. There isn’t about group with their sound and intentionality to be art…. Love watching folks find this band 🤘🏼🌀
Great reactions bro!
The reason why the riff seems to skip is because this song is in 5/4 time, so there's literally an extra beat per measure than you're used to hearing in "standard" music with 4/4 time. 👍🏽😁
Great reaction to an amazing band. I think you’ve done “The Pot”. Check out the cover by Brass Against 🤯
Tool is my number 1, but Sevendust.
TIONEB!
Last time i swear. Alex Jones indy song ruclips.net/video/KGAAhzreGWw/видео.html&start_radio=1.
More Tool!!!! haha maybe try some songs by Karnivool otherwise known as the Australian Tool. Start with Themata but their magnum opus is without a doubt the album sound awake! its amazing! Love the content matey!
U want penmanship, TOOLs lyrics can be transcendent in the right mood
Thank you brother.
Check out Fiddle and the drum. Wildly different but super awesome
they are offbeat but sooo in time ;))
I didn't know Nike was making Aesop Rock shirts. But here you are wearing. You should react to Aggressive Steven. The finest hip hop storyteller America has to offer.
