  • No matter the season, Orty Ortwein enjoys bike trails. He enjoys it so much that when it came to buying a vehicle, it had to have the ability to carry his bicycle. Ortwein picked a Kia Soul based on reviews and friend recommendations. All went well until this past August when the oil light came on in Indianapolis, and he never made it to his home in Lebanon.

Indeed, Indianapolis to Lebanon, IN is about 30 miles. Probably driving at highway speeds, so it was even more starved, and progressed quickly. I wonder if he noticed the engine temp rising too.. All signs something it terribly wrong, he even mentions sounds emanating from the engine. Yeah, I bet there was an issue or defect to cause the oil starvation, but he might have saved the engine and the headache if he had pulled over much sooner and gave up getting home. He could have used the same exact app and gotten a Lyft himself home and return to the vehicle the next day. Don't keep driving with oil lights and engine temp gauge rising.

Hahaha I have a 2014 Forte with less then 100,000 miles on it. I get the oil changed every 3,000 miles and never go over that. After 1,500 miles after an oil change, my car burns oil, so I have to constantly check the dip stick and add 2 sometimes 3 quarts of oil. If your car is using oil and I don't mean dumping it out due to an oil leak more then say a quart between 3,000 miles, there is a problem. These cars are junk.

My mechanic offered the same advice. Now I’m in a Corolla again! The last one was a 1989 with 200,000 miles. “Boring” but a good solid, tried/true commuter car. The newer one has a CVT which has already had a filter and fluid change by an independent transmission shop at 32,000 miles. They said it was good, new fluid looked about the same as old fluid, very clean, no clutch and metal debris…so it might last a while if not driven like a race car.

Agree their engines aren't Toyota or Honda quality. But our engine went at 70,000 miles----and it was still under warrantee. Short story----we got a new free engine at 70,000 miles---and no questions asked at our Hyundai Dealership. So their longer warranty is a blessing.

Took our Hyundai in for what seemed to be poor acceleration and clicking sound at around 70,000 miles. They said leave it here and gave us a loaner for fee----they called the next day and said we were getting a free new engine. Seemed a bit early for a new engine. But I had to replace an engine in my Old's Cutlass at 13,000 miles, and it was just past warranty. . So we thought it was great service. They stand behind their engines----and zero questions asked. Three weeks of driving their nice SUV----so we took a few trips in it.

The car had a mere 4000 kilometres on the clock when it broke down miles from home. He had to have it towed to the nearest KIA dealer (Sydney Hills District dealer) - who refused to even look at it for 3 weeks! He asked about a courtesy car and the dealer treated him like dirt. He rang KIA head office and a customer officer there named Shaun, authorised him to get a hire car and KIA would pay for it (as the car is well and truly still under warranty.) The KIA Rio was 6 weeks being repaired, and my son tried to do the right thing by just hiring a car when he absolutely needed to. He incurred a mere $200 in car hire over 6 weeks - and yep, you can see it coming - KIA refused to pay. They said that "Shaun" had been removed from his post (probably for being helpful) and that the car hire cost was against KIA policy - on a frickin' car that had done a mere 4000 kilometres. My son was so angry when he got the car back, he took it down to the nearest Toyota dealer and traded it for a Corolla. He has now learned his lesson - avoid KIA like the plague ... their warranty isn't worth sh*t.

I own a auto repair shop and have been a professional automotive technician 20+ years. The oil light came on which means there is no oil pressure. I would put money on it that he is like everyone else in the world that doesn’t check their oil and probably only changes it once every 10k miles. Why should Kia have to loose money because he was too lazy to spend 30 seconds once a week to check his oil. Kia and Hyundai engines have been known to burn oil since they started really selling them in America 30 years ago. I have had so many customers over the years blow up their engines because it ran low on oil because they didn’t check it. People will say “the oil light came on but I only just finished driving home it was only 5 miles away”. So I say you didn’t pull over and check the oil? They say no I didn’t have oil anyways so there was nothing I could do. I said well next time that happens you should pull over and check the oil because now you need a new engine you can’t run an engine for any period of time without any oil. If the oil light is on and its full of oil then get it towed it’s better to be safe then sorry. That 5 mile drive is gonna cost you 6,000 bucks. Last month I had a customer call me saying his car is over heating asking if it’s safe to drive and I said absolutely not You can destroy the engine from over heating it even just a little bit, it could already be damaged from overheating it. The next day I get to my shop and his car is in my parking lot. I look at the car and he got it so hot that the radiator melted where the radiator cap goes, when u start the engine exhaust was coming out of the radiator. When u get an engine really hot they tend to make this ticking noise and this other sound that is hard to explain but when an engine gets that hot u just replace it because the engines usually never last long after that. I call him and said why did u drive the car? He said well I was only 10 miles from ur shop and I didn’t want to pay for a tow truck. I said well now u need an engine and he said he didn’t have the money and asked if I could just do the head gaskets. I said I wouldn’t do head gaskets on this even if it was my own car and if I do them you will have no warranty at all and it’s possible that I take the engine apart to do the heads and find something broken and then you will have to replace the engine anyways and then you will have to pay for the time it took to take the engine apart which will be around 10hrs labor ($1200). I strongly recommend replacing the engine just think if I pull the heads off and find a crack in the block then u have to pay to replace the engine plus $1200 for taking the engine apart or say we do the head gasket job which is about 3,000 bucks and then the engine blows up in 2 months then u gotta replace the engine. He insisted on trying to do the head gaskets and sure enough when I got the engine apart there was a big crack in the block.

After 12 years and 100k miles, other than normal routine fuel and maintenance costs, I have come out of pocket for (less than $2,500) 3 car batteries, four sets of windshield wipers, and just recently one CV boot and head gasket and serpentine belt. My wife's vehicle has this issue and they told her she had bad gas in the tank and they will not warrant the engine. So I have been doing some searching on the web, for people facing this issue there are various sites that are mentioning the issue. The car is supposed to run on 87 and not on 91 or 93 like the mechanic told me wife erroneously. The error P1326 and P0014 are mentioned in many recalls, Hyundai uses the same engine and is honouring the recall. This should be an easy case in small claims court.

    Let's review the evidence:
    1) It appears that the guy bought a used cars: difficult to know the level of maintenance by the previous owner.
    2) The guy kept on driving despite a warning for low oil level: this is something you should never do, also, low oil level is a sign of bad maintenance or negligence.
    3) The engine stopped working all of a sudden: this can be caused by many things including lack of oil change/ lack of engine oil.
    4) The presence of oil sludge in the engine: this is a pretty revealing sign of low maintenance or lack of oil change.
Conclusion: Kia might be on the spot for having a policy that voids warranty repairs if the car is used as a people carrier for money, but this guy did not properly maintained his engine by performing the minimal oil changes.

A lot of people buy a car based on looks or price instead of due diligence research. Try reading reviews from car magazines or websites. It was well known that certain years, certain engines from Kia were extremely unreliable. I have only had 4 cars in the last 30 years with no major repairs of any kind. I’ve had to buy a few batteries, an alternator, a water pump & a lot of tires but always get at least 160,000 miles out of every car I own & they still are running when I trade them in.

Not true, I am the second owner(I bought it from my mom) of a 2016 Sorento and I had the recall work done at the dealership, my vin # qualified, I had done all the recall/software updates required so it qualified there also but when I bought the car it was already over 100,000 miles and at the time out of warranty so obviously I did not keep records of every oil change I did to the car since it wasn’t warranties old but the class action lawsuit automatically extended my power train warranty to 150,000 so when my engine seized up on the highway at 135,000 I felt pretty good about them doing the right thing & replacing the engine but they denied my claim saying I didn’t properly maintain the vehicle b/c I couldn’t produce every oil change record from the time I bought it until the day it seized up which is simply not true, I maintained my car early or on time for everything but didn’t keep records of oil changes & did a couple of them myself so there was no way to show them the records they asked for so I have a 2016 Sorento under warranty sitting in my driveway with a seized engine that they refuse to repair and to pour salt in my wounds and when I asked about trading it in for another Kia the dealership offered me $100 in trade in for the vehicle!!! Yeah, this whole situation is just one big scam & what good is “the best warranty in the business” when they aren’t actually repairing people’s cars and even after settling a class action lawsuit?? This is the most infuriating thing I’ve ever had to endure when it comes to a vehicle… Sure, I’d agree to extending everyone’s warranty to 150k as a settlement too if I knew I had no intention of actually doing anything but finding a way to fuck people over!

    • @marcusdamberger
      @marcusdamberger Год назад

This is why I always go to places that report to Carfax the maintenance they did. Wal-Mart does not report oil changes, and probably nothing else either, as I discovered when looking back on my Girlfriends old Hyundai Accent. I knew when I took it to Wal-Mart service center, and it never showed up. So basically for multiple years between Wal-Mart and another local oil change place, the vehicle looked like it didn't have regular maintenance for 5 years.. Then suddenly when I had to take it to Hyundai to have them replace torn wheel well cover (after blown tire), it showed back up in Carfax all the stuff they did. I had them do a few other items at the same time, and every item they worked on showed up on Carfax for that mileage.
If you go to Carfax you can look up local businesses that report to them, I discovered this later. The Hyundai we had later got totaled. But the engine ran like a top tell the day we drove it over to the body repair shop. Also WARNING multiple Kia and Hyundai models DO NOT have a maintenance light on their dashboard to remind you to do an oil change. Maybe the newest versions do, but 2013 Accent didn't and I was told by the Hyundai dealer several models don't have that light. My old 98' Honda Accord had a maintenance light to remind you, why couldn't they do this on a 2013 Hyundai!!??

The theta 2 gdi engines have been built to fail and they are using all the bs excuses to be accountable to that regardless of the fact that they lost a lawsuit for faulty manufacturing of engine! And they were trying to cover it up and a whistle blower had to come to reveal the scandal. Every lawyer in America should be reaching out to open class action lawsuits against them for their excessive oil consumptions and make sure that they close all the loop holes Hyundai is taking to avoid honoring the warranties they had to settle for in county. The only thing that matters is these engines are built to fail no matter what you do for maintenance. People who kept up with their maintenance through Hyundai like they recommended STILL had their engines fail or catch on fire… the new lawsuit needs to clearly state, NO MATTER WHAT, if a theta 2 engine fails, regardless of “signs of neglect” all engines MUST BE REPLACED. @@antityier it’s true. They have recalled all of their 2019-2021 and older due to engine fires they are corroding internally. I believe 15 19 tuscons has caught fire and 2 21. Ever heard of the theta 2 engine class action? They have every year model from 2009- now In it however if u join it limits u from taking further legal action and goodwill only 140 and for ppl who traded 2,000 and 400 for newer models. Go read TSBs. I get the man side but still regarded they have a moral obligation to repair their cars that are failing and hold no value. He will have more engine problems like we all do wouldn’t it make sense to authorize it and have them coming back and paying service fees etc? Anytime u go unless it’s a recall ur coughing up money. Get a new engine and a few months later be informed this one like ur last one is under the engine fire recall and it’s not even a fix it’s just replacing the 40 fuse to 25. And have knock sensors installed to disable ur car when it falls under factory due to rod bearings , pistons and fails omissions . My car was 24 days old when it started having problems.

Im not defending kia but having experience in the industry, the optimas, sportages and Sorrento's with the 2.4 theta engine had that problem with the metal shavings. They typically replaced the engines in all instances except if it was a salvage title. The souls 1.6 engine was not affected by the same recall. This owner probably didn't change the oil within the correct maintenance interval based on Kia's statement. I saw it all the time, customers would always come in way past their due oil change and would always expect a free engine or warranty work. Lack of maintenance = no warranty.

Anytime you use your car as a business, all bets are off when it comes to warranty. Sucks, but that's the way its always been. Also, who doesn't check their oil level from time to time!?
