CIG Fixed Very High Clouds?

- CIG gave us an update to very high clouds this week in one of the Star Citizen 3.23 PTU patches! Supposedly it will look better and perform better, but does it? I tested it out at 4K with my RTX 4080 and at 1080p with a GTX 1660!

Have you noticed any difference since the cloud update?
When I saw very high clouds I though 'oh, they have come out with an appearance of Cirrus'
RUclips crossover comment!
Nice, but be careful. CR might see this and decide to rework all weather to dynamically spawn different types of clouds according to storm patterns.
Me too lol
@@honey-fe6pj RUclips crossover comment! I don't know what that means. I thought cirrus clouds as well. How else would you interpret it?
The upscaling + high clouds work really well for me, I was always on medium before
Smart move to call the last setting photo mode lol
Love your vids and can’t wait to get your recommended settings when this thing rolls out for real.
Sadly, not been able to try out any of the 3.23 stuff yet...(grumbles)
Being on a mid/low end spec machine any performance optimisations are welcome.
good stuff.
At Orison, it's less grainy/fuzzy on my settings, 3080 12GB, 12700K, 64 GB ram @6000 - have everything set high, no upscaling, 1440p 165 hz. Vulkan Beta and DLSS on.
But DLSS is upscaling though isn't it?
@@AbuN4z1ri was thinking this too. So this means it is 1080p upscaled to 1440p?
"no upscaling" and "DLSS on" in the same sentence is crazy
Thanks, that's good to know!
Was this latest round of testing done on the DX11 version of the game, or Vulkan? IIRC, I read that the new clouds work much better in Vulkan than DX11
Very good point- should've mentioned that! I've stuck with dx11 for now, I'll do a proper load of testing of dx11 vs vulkan once 3.23 goes live!
can you please make a guide for optimize settings (best perf without loosing too much quality) or something like that ?
Clouds don't flicker. lol So yeah they need to fix that asap.
I'm running a 5950x 7900xtx 64 gigs 3800 cl 16 ram and 4K 75 inch 120 Hz at 12 bit color and get everything maxed and am still pulling 50s to 70s on very high and 20s on max clouds yoummight be bottle necking you self in two areas the 7800 is more for 1440p and im constantly using 38 gigs of ram
Hmm, with almost the same system I have 41fps avg with 35-40 1%low above orison with very high clouds, 4k all maxed out settings. 7800x3d/4080s/64gb 6000mhz ram 3.23 live (and the game uses 29900mb of ram xD)
Interesting! Are you testing in the same spot as I was, on top of the roof?
You can honestly run reference clouds (4k) with DLSS.... (on my 4090) 😅
The 4090 is such a beast!
how many fps?
Still shocking that you need DLSS with a 4090 (!)
@@IceW4ve 4k+unoptimized+hungry tech
@@IceW4ve it's me, Ephemeral. lol. I honestly don't. I run it native with all options maxed out except clouds on "very high". Clouds on Photo mode brings me down to ~30fps which I don't like. With DLSS, it gets up to maybe 40+ but Native 4k on very high (which looks so damn close) I'm 60+.
I have heard that fsr does clouds better (Less fizzly). You might consider trying that.
Yep I'm planning on taking a proper look at all of the different upscaling options once 3.23 goes live!
What is your opinion on the i9 11900 for Star Citizen? its the best cpu i can put on my mobo rn (and i really didnt want to switch platforms for now).
Does the cloud tech make it that i don’t prefer to turn them off for the sake of visibility though
Having a hard time to understand what you mean, too many double negatives LOL!
How is a 2060 oc and a 5600x with 24g of ram going to perform with the changes im starting to think i need to upgrade
The 2060 is fairly decent still at 1080p: ruclips.net/video/abLcL4-PNeI/видео.html
You could look at the 5800X3D for a CPU upgrade: ruclips.net/video/2xrIAwPV8B4/видео.html
Your current setup should be playable though (for SC!).
You need that RTX 8090 Ti to really enjoy these noisy clouds!
Why didn’t you test photo mode with DLSS?
I'm planning on doing some proper upscaling testing when 3.23 goes live- ran out of time to do anything else for this one!
Not wanting to sound ungrateful to CIG,but until all the fuzziness has gone, and performance has increased, I still won’t be playing with clouds on in 3.32 it seems. Also I love flying in blue skies anyway as have enough cloudiness in real life lol
Turn on dlss the clouds arent fuzzy
RTX 4080? 🤑 That's why you don't go on the cheap. Do it once and do it properly. RTX 4090 tests inbound and we'll see what DLSS Quality and Photomode give us... 😆 In all seriousness I'm sure there's a lot more changes coming in future patches and don't forget they are building an entirely new planet tech v5 as well...
When's release?
I'm going to guess they'll release the patch Wednesday/Thursday next week at the latest. They have content for ISC lined up and apparently it changes if the patch isn't released.
since this thing was added, never turned them on, no point, they look bad anyway. i prefer gameplay maybe they should add some of that XD, good vid.
Kinda of disingenuous if you are not calling out what render engine you are using, D11 is EOL and shouldnt be expected to be improved on, Vulkan is the future but they are still enabling and setting it up. Little cart before the horse on this one but still love ya tenpound!
Why would that be disingenuous exactly?
@@honey-fe6pj lacking in candor about the testing environment. For example running a system with a 12th Gen i7 32gb of ram and a 4090 on the vulkan renderer I saw a 10% uplift moving from the December Nvidia drivers to the 4/16/24 release alone.
As an experimental release build on a game in alpha weirdly detailed things like that can definitely matter
But I didn't mean for it to come off as an Insult, more of a constructive criticism about how additional information can add needed context in a testing environment
A very fair point- I should've mentioned that I was using DX11!
ruclips.net/video/F0t0wAPD8zo/видео.html
Idk why your clouds look so bad
Think I'm just looking from a different angle!
Well, Chris was right, "I'm not making a game, I'm making a universe." but all the backers wanted a mmorpg like he also advertised.
Sorry. They need to start over. Hire somebody from asobo studios and redo the cloud tech. It looks noisy, it performs bad, and it doesn't even come close to the quality and performance of other games.
Really? is this that important? I'm a bit confused now, I thought SC is more about Space Gaming not about Film Making.
Clouds, Water, Trees, Grass, who cares! We want a working Game mechanics, FPS, Shooting, Flight Model (now that they ruined it with MM), working AI.
CIG, stop adding Makeup on the Pig! Players, stop funding them for doing that!
DLSS make the gfx worse and brings latence
I'm not sure you understand what you're saying. The graphics quality is debatable. Most due to preference. Latency, though? By definition DLSS is lowering latency.
@@jackinthebox301 by definition DLSS increases latency UNLESS you actually see an FPS benefit from using it. which in the case of SC being so CPU bound, DLSS offers no tangible FPS improvements and processing DLSS on the Tensor cores incurs a latency penalty. maybe you need to understand what you are saying because DLSS does incur higher latency for its processing time in CPU bound games/areas
@@123TheCloop The latency introduced due to processing time is more than made up for by the increase in base frames per second. A situation where running DLSS nets you fewer frames is hilariously specific. Even in SC. This is a silly point to get pedantic on, dude.
DLSS framegen is, to my knowledge, what increases latency. I believe Star Citizen is using DLSS 2.0, not 3.0 and thus no latency. It only renders the game on lower quality and upscaling to targeted resolution.
@@freerunner2011Frame gen does not increase latency either. What happens is you get a higher frame rate and perceived smoothness from the faked frame but you are still getting the responsiveness of your base frame rate. So if you are normally getting 60fps, frame gen typically around doubles frame rate so now you are getting 120 but it still FEELS like 60 when it comes to mouse movement.
The clouds look like shit no matter what you set it to. Other sims have proper clouds, like DCS and MSFS. What's the problem CIG, you have a bigger development budget than both of these titles combined. I might add that I can play DCS in VR and get better rendering performance.
There's no hope for this game. Engine is terrible. Game will be a buggy mess forever
Shame they can't fix the game but know how clouds work
Different Teams
Think about it this way. A developer designs some new feature in the game but causes a lot of bugs, then the bug fixers need to come in and fix it without understanding how the feature was coded in the first place. Imagine how hard it is to fix something when you dont understand how it works.
Imagine being this slow.
I don't think dome randoms fix all the bugs
the engine is trash
Why? Crysis was like the benchmark for gaming
