What a magnificent and varied lineup of selections. It speaks to Siepi’s versatility,
not to mention vocal stamina. I can’t imagine singing solo selections for 90 minutes straight. 30 minutes was tricky enough for me! Bravo Cesare!

As far as ITALIAN bass voices go (since he retired) there have been several fine ones but none that I have heard who surpass him in musicianship or beauty of timbre. Several exceed him in terms of interpretation of certain roles (King Phillip for example) but, as Mozart’s Figaro & Don Giovanni he really adds, through both the music & drama, a quality not matched by any since his time. As late as 1986 in a recital with Freni he still had the voice any basso cantate would envy. Although referred to such in the previous sentence he had a superb depth to his instrument. 2 examples, at least, exist of him adding a low C in fact. One in his recorded aria album from the late 1950s & the other in a LIVE performance of the Cardinal’s aria in LA JUIVE from 1981. The esteemed late John Steane in disparaging him was way off his mark. Siepi was also superior to Pinza as DON GIOVANNI in the elegance of his style & musicianship. But one cannot forget Pinza was Pinza whose voice was an even finer natural instrument but who could not apparently read music. How Pinza ever learned GOLAUD in PELLEAS is hard to imagine but he did manage somehow. Anyway where do find either of their voices nowadays?

    • @Michael-mh4vr

An ex teacher who was a bass with an international career himself said when he saw siepi live in his prime said the voice seemed like it came from a huge hole in stage rather than his mouth. I disagree regarding pinza who was an idol in ny youth. Pinza had a beautiful voice but siepis..was um sure much larger.

Cesare Siepi gibt hier einen kleinen Einblick in sein umfangreiches Repertoire. das wiederum sein großartiges Künstlertum in allen Belangen reflektiert. Was sagt Rudolf Bing, der ehemalige Met-Leiter?

Pity there was no double bass available for the 'Per Questa Bella Mano'.
I loved the Porter songs at the end. "Easy to Love" should be called 'Hard to Sing". It has a huge range. Pop singers do it in falsetto. Nice to hear it sung full voice.

Justino Diaz-Villarini Hi Justino, nice to read from you!
I heard rumors that Siepi left the Met in 1973 because the new management after Rudolf Bing preferred you in cast and that made Siepi so angry that he left.
Is that true or do you know something about the reasons why Siepi left the MET in anger? Thank you very much!
