- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this captivating reading, legendary poet, activist and scholar Sonia Sanchez explores the most important question of the 21st century: What does it mean to be human?
When Sonia Sanchez was selected as Philadelphia’s first Poet Laureate, then Mayor Michael Nutter noted that she was “the longtime conscience of the city.” A pioneer of black studies and one of the most important writers of the Black Arts Movement, Sonia is the author of sixteen celebrated books. The internationally renowned poet, activist, and scholar is a frequent lecturer on black culture and literature, women’s liberation, and peace and racial justice. Sonia was the first Presidential Fellow at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she began teaching in 1977, and held the Laura Carnell Chair in English until her retirement in 1999. She continues to live and work in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

@@samuelpinheiro7896 obrigado
Yes she changed my life in undergrad ... Taught me to see love and revolution not just one or the other im forever grateful
i love this women so much she says my feelings and makes me want to change the world and I will
Ambeanie L She is super inspiring
This expression of brilliance makes wonder how this world accepts anything other than the quest to really understand what it means to be human. Have the masses, particularly in the U.S., been programmed to forget they're human first, before gender, before income, before skin color, before weight and beauty ...
Truth, beauty, wisdom, love and strength - Sonia Sanchez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a wonderful poet! She has a wonderful air!

Sonia, I love you...... Just the other day I was remembering Elizabeth Catlett's work....wondering if she was still with us... I did not know she had passed... I so appreciated her work......I took sooo many art classes in college.... I've spent sooo much time working..... I've lost touch....I don't read as much...or go to art exhibits... I am reconnecting.... so thankful for youtube. thank you ......
Wow! Just wow!!!! 😍😍😍😍 She did that!
This is Godgeous! Mama Sanchez, I bow to you, because you come with such spirit, such conviction, such power! Woman, you speak truth like only you can; you turn intellect on its head and blow it away with one shot of spirit-fire. Boom! Where truth exists, peace can reign. We must become life! #iWriteLife #iSpeakLife
As I’m doing my research project and manuscript on her legacy , my third eye continues to gradually open every time I hear her become her craft
How does she use language and delivery to convey her messages? Identify three key language features and three ways that she engages the audience through delivery, such as pace, pause and intonation.
I love how she delivers her speech
En joyed very much your poems and explanations and unique cadence and word choices that had an emotional impact and kept me engaged throughout.
I, too, am a poet ( I write mostly Japanese format poems i.e. haiku , senryu, tanka/kyoka, haibun etc. I hope you don’t mind me sharing a Tanka and a haiku dedicated to Matshuo Bashō’s frog with added insightful commentary by the late AHA founder and poet Jane Reichhold who considered my haiku among her 10 favorite haiku of all time! What an honor.
Here’s the Bashō poem with Jane Reichhold’s insightful commentary:
Bashō’s frog
four hundred years
of ripples
At first the idea of picking only 10 of my favorite haiku seemed a rather
daunting task. How could I review all the haiku I have read in my life and decide that there were only 10 that were outstanding? Then realized I was already getting a steady stream of excellent haiku day by day through the AHA forum.
The puns and write-offs based on Basho's most famous haiku are so
numerous I would have said that nothing new could be said with this
method, but here Al Fogel proved me wrong. Perhaps part of my delight in this haiku lies in the fact that I agree with him. Here he is saying one thing about realism-ripples are on a pond after a frog jumps in, but because it refers back to Basho and his famous haiku, he is also saying something about the haiku and authors who have followed him. We, and our work, are just ripples while Basho holds the honor of inventing the idea of the sound of a frog leaping is the sound of water
As haiku spreads around the world, making ripples in more and larger ponds, its ripples are wider-including us all. But his last word reminds us
that we are ripples and our lives ephemeral. It will be the frogs that will remain.

What year was this?
There are human beings and then there are Human Beings.
A human being is one who is being driven by the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, which is an illusion invented by the past conditioning of the brain.
It acts like a filter, which limits, distorts, shapes and colors all perceptions.
It acts like an inner tyrant who tells you what to think, how to feel and what to do.
Moreover, it invents the illusion of division, separation, and disconnection from everyone and everything, which leads inevitably to conflict, violence, and suffering.
Therefore, they never See, Hear, or Feel anyone or anything.
As a result, there is no Love, Peace, Joy, or Creativity. There is only their limitation and imitation.
A human being is actually inhuman.
Total Freedom from the I, the me, the self, the so-called True or Higher Self, is the beginning of being a Human Being in daily life.
Being a Human Being means actually being Totally Free of fear, anxiety, sorrow, suffering, confusion, alienation, addiction, envy, greed, jealousy, pride, self-importance, anger, hatred, violence, bias, and prejudice in daily life.
Being a Human Being means actually Living Love, Peace, Joy, and Creativity in daily life.
Being a Human Being means actually being in Communication, Communion, Relationship with everyone and everything in daily life.
