My favorite version of Windows: X Windows :P
Actually my favorite MS Windows from back in the day is Windows 2000 (the mess with running 16-bit/32-bit code in Win9x was a pain). My favorite server was Server 2003 R2. WinXP felt like a downgrade until SP2 came out. Then I started getting into it more as I was also dual-booting Slackware at the time. Then the Vista/2008 mess happened and the more gentler downhill slope they were on turned into a pit fall. Windows 7/2008 R2 was a ledge to stand on in the pit they've put themselves in. Windows 8/2012 was the banana peel of disappointment that made them slip off said ledge. Windows 8.1/2012 R2 was a parachute with holes in it. Windows 10/2016/2019 is like falling with a bolder over head like what happened with Wile E Coyote in the Road Runner cartoons, and it's just a matter of time before they hit bottom and get flattened.
That said currently, Server 2008 R2 is still a strong contender. We still have several servers running on it at work where we're still working on phasing it out due to technical problems and/or just time for the projects and/or expenses (like buying new software to run on newer servers). Server 2008 R2 is quite the work horse and handles basic things like updates far better than 2016/2019 do. There are also cases where instead of upgrading to a newer Windows server we've been replacing some of them with Linux servers (like our old SFTP servers where it's a no brainer).

Can't quite switch everything I do over to Linux just yet either (though I also have Fedora 31 MATE on the Win10 SSD). For me the first windows 10 release was the best. If I could I didn't upgrade to the latest ones. But I started with xp and jumped to 8 (8.1) and it was lightweight and faster than xp or 10. 8 was always better in general for me, like boots in about 6-8 sec and I can use immediately the OS on an old laptop it was a great experience.
But I upgraded to 10. It was fast (but only the first ever release). On my video editor PC (not a beast, but quite powerful) it was slower than my old laptop with 10. Than I installed 8.1 to the PC and it was flying! I don't know, want happened, but 10 isn't for me. I will use 8 for 3 years and I maybe upgrade to 10 or finally delete my windows partition and install Arch to my complete PC.

My favorite was XP, before 7 arrived. I had no problems with Vista, 8, etc. but XP isn't modern enough for some software and 7 just seems more polished compared to Vista. If I could get Windows 10 without all the UWP crap and go back to "Windows Classic" theme I'd probably do that. :)

      @Vlad-1986 4 года назад +1

@@coinmaster1922 Yeah, I also had good performance with VMware, but as things are, you need to run it on compatibility mode with version 6 (I think). So who know how long is it going to work... There is also problems with sound and video. I would actually recommend pirating VMware as there is no guarantee you'll pay and still have it working on a year or so!
I don't have much experience with post W98 windows, but not long ago I got a laptop and had win10 installed on the ssd, so I decided to play with it before removing it, and found there is something called classic shell and some themes to mimic Win9x, with uneven but somewhat good results. The UWP issue is not salvageable too.
The irony is that If you want the closest W95 experience on a modern computer you'll need Linux or BSD, Xfce4 as desktop environment and the Chicago95 theme. You wouldn't veliebe how many people I have fooled with it. Windows 9x work more often than not with Wine than they do on Win10, but I personally struggle with playing MIDI music on them under Linux

Around 19:45 you mentioned how all the feature and telemetry updates bloated up Windows 7 and it's true. I bought brand new HP laptop in November of 2009 with Windows 7 Home edition, i5 quad core processor and 4 GB of RAM and it was running fast. By 2016 it took a lot longer for Windows 7 to start up due to all the garbage they bundled with their updates, so I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro. That's why I always wished Microsoft would separate the "feature" updates and keep them separate, of course with pre 10 Windows, you had the option of keeping any updates you didn't care for out of the updates to be installed. I don't know about Server 2016 but we all know that 10 has taken the flexibility of choosing the updates you don't want installed out. Most of my computers on my home network are running Windows 10 Pro, along with one Windows 8.1 and 2 Linux, and on the Windows 10 devices, I go through the Programs and Features that were installed after every Windows 10 update, or any new items that were installed on the menu and Uninstall them. Hopefully that'll keep them from cluttering up the systems.

I have an old computer that I put Windows 7 on just to run my printer. I dual booted it with Peppermint 10. I know some people don't like dual boots with windows but I turned off all updates and put an antivirus program and chrome browser on it. I know all support was stopped for Win7 but in the past I used XP for years after the expiration date without problemos. Using the computer mainly for the printer and as a spare. If something goes wrong I have the Win7 disk and can reinstall.

I totally agree now as I used it again after years on my trusty Tylersburg 5520/X58 dual Xeon workstation into Patsburg C612/X99. Running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 converted as workstation for media work. I came from Server 2003 R2 Enterprise as workstation and used it for a good 10 yrs on many dual and single high end workstations as well as the new 2006 ROG gaming series as it was so stable stripped down for overclocking. Gaming was very limited in early Server 2003 in regards to x64 support drivers for new SLI & X-Fire as well as the need to upgrade to Enterprise grade anti virus of the time. 2008 R2 was a game changer. I'm moving to current Server 2019 Standard on a 5yo workstation so I'm still getting used to it. again, I only use as workstation for now as I'm learning to build a small server data center.

And the first thing I do after installing it on each one is turn of Automatic updates. And as far as I'm aware I've NEVER been hacked or had any malicious viruses on any of them. Good tip on the 'Snappy Driver Install' though. I'm currently checking that out :D
But what I can't work out is if in my Device manager It says I'm only missing 3 drivers why is 'SDI' downloading 18.5 gig worth of drivers before installing?
    Good vid! Cheers

I have been dabbling with Linux and recently got a new laptop. I used to be able to my Linux distro from my USB on my old system BUT; this new computer does not include legacy boot options, and I have not been able to find a way to boot from a USB at all.
The system is a dell latitude 5401 with windows 10 pro. Dell support has not been able to give a solid answer as to how to boot from USB on the system I have which seems crazy to me.
My question is: have you encountered this issue at all and do you know of any way to boot from a USB on these new systems without legacy boot options?
    Great videos thanks!
    Cole

Anyone who has an AMD video card won't even get video drivers unless they have a server grade card but nvidia ones will, same thing with scanners and printers, the hardware venders just lock support so they won't work on a server version at all.

I hated XP due to having to insert disks to download drivers and such and then I bought a retail version of 7 and it would not install then I had to buy a second 7 so I paid twice to have it on my computer because the retail store would not refund my money for the bed copy. And 7's background upon installing it was way to feminine for me although I changed it. I never had any troubles though with Vista.

I'd be careful just installing all SDI drivers. I love SDI (it's way less sketchy than the old DRP) but you need to make sure no odd devices show up that make no sense, once in awhile when you open those, it is misidentifying some odd proprietary component as something else (I think once I saw a dell battery driver try to replace some Microsoft surface sensor device or something along those lines), It usually fails but once it took me awhile to realize why I had random broken devices in device manager that magically became actual parts of the laptop when I uninstalled their drivers.
