Is The Nintendo Switch SNES Controller Worth Buying?

- Nintendo has now started to ship out the Super Nintendo Controllers that are designed to be used with the Switch and SNES Application. My controller finally came in and I wanted to compared it to the 8bitdo controller and try it out in the SNES app. We will also take apart the controller and see how well it's built inside.

"Maybe they had some nintendo labo leftover, I don't know."
I didn't know you had that much sass in ya, mate!
My son : (laughing) No...it's for protection, dummy.
Captain Future nice, let me just take a look whoever asked
This is the most aussie comment mate!!!
It's amazing how much the SNES has not aged at all. It was such a brilliant system with games that are just as fun to play today as they were in the 90s.
Agreed
Ben Kizer Most of the games still look pretty good too especially compared to PlayStation 1 and N64 games
True, by the snes era 2d games were being perfected and the pixel art was pretty gorgeous
not too long ago we've gone from cheap worthless Super Nintendo controller knockoffs to 20 different high-quality versions of the SNES controller
Nintendo switch is now God 🙂🛐
technology has come so far. humanity has mastered the snes controller
Yeah, I'm really happy Nintendo poked their head out of their asses for a second and decided to take some of the money we've been offering them all these years. I guess it took other companies making money off the SNES design for Nintendo to want it. That's Nintendo for you.
@@supernes64eaa86 Oh really? The Nintendo Switched has created the earth, humanity and all of life? Good to now.
@@jimmyjones6086 To be fair, he didn't say which of the gods, just one of them.
"Maybe they have a lot of Labo left over." :D
Hahahaha
I wouldn't doubt it. I just saw a bunch of Labo kits for like $15 at my local Wal-Mart. That's not a good sign. It was only the first two Labo kits, plus the VR Starter Kit, but still, it's clear that Wal-Mart wants these things gone. Having said that, I still have a soft spot for Labo. It's overpriced and gimmicky, but still an interesting concept. The software just doesn't do as much as it should have. (The composition tools for the piano were insanely underwhelming.) I went ahead and picked up the VR Starter Kit, just because Nintendo keeps adding support for it into various games. And I would say that I got at least $15 worth of entertainment out of it so far, so I'm happy with the purchase.
I laughed so hard after that sentence. Classic!!!!
Shots fired!
I saw then on sale not long ago
The most amazing thing about this video is how well he keeps eye contact while reassembling the controller. Not one dropped screw or swear.
Yes. My dad still plays with me sometimes and he’s in his late 40’s and he still loves playing old school games, but cant get into the new controllers
He should try the 8BitDo SN30 Pro, same form factor as the original but with all the new inputs.
That grey switch lite looks so clean.
The white buttons and analog sticks really makes it look good. I don't need one but damn I want one lol
It’s not grey!
Protip everybody:
If you want to play with the SNES dpad in games that don't support it, the gbros adapter and a SNES classic controller have you covered. Install the latest firmware and hold Select+Left until the red light flashes. Select+Up reverts to Dpad, Select+Right gives you right stick on the Dpad. Go nuts.
I'm thoroughly enjoying mine so far, glad it has ZR and ZL for compatibility with more than just NES/SNES games, even if the placement isn't optimal for some games. Been using it for Mega Man X4, Shovel Knight, and a lot of Zelda II, of all things.
Zelda II ⁉️⁉️⁉️
Sn30 pro all the way for me personally. Pretty much full functionality barring two small features. Feels pretty much identical in your hand and the build quality is great.
Agreed. You can at least use the 8bitdo for switch games if you need an extra controller. It works well for smash bros and Mario cart. The Nintendo online model is quite limited now that I have both. Sn30 pro all the way
Some people want to actually feel like they’re holding an snes controller, that’s the whole point of this…
@@Chilltown95 thank you lol. im getting this just to play Yoshi's island.. like when i was a kid.
Kind of ridiculous that I missed the 2hr window they were available, and they haven't been available to order since.
I'm not buying from a stinkin' scalper on eBay either.
I called Nintendo support to ask if they were ever going to be available again and the worker said "I really hope so, I didn't get a chance to get one either."
Ridiculous.
they're planning to re release them early next year according to their site
@@KrystaKream thanks! Nintendo should have learned sooner. I ended up getting a SNES style 8bitdo controller instead. Got tired of waiting.
8bitdo is best
They're back again
They are available to purchase now, I was able to buy 2 yesterday
i picked up an 8bitdo sf30 pro no too long ago. love it. works with everything, not just the snes online service. 2 analog sticks and trigger buttons. feels pretty good in the hand and works great.
My brothers have a pro controller but instead I use my sn30pro. It's dpad is so good and it's sticks are great too
0:00 Is The Nintendo Switch SNES controller worth it?
Thanks timestamp person, you're the real MVP
Thx you're a life saver
Not all heros wear capes👏👏🦸
Thank you so much.👆👆👆👆👏👏👏👏and what this guy said.
Do u really a reviewer to tell u that? What do u think?
Crazy how far this guy has come. I remember when he had like 5k subs.
“Feels good in the hands, ladies, you know the procedure”
Flossy
Never thought I’d see a Flossy Carter reference one a Spawn Wave comment section!
Mmm MMMMMM! Smells like Nintendo. This controller is a major major major go.
@@hrespin7682 same here lol caught me off guard a bit
Would love to see a Flossy Carter and Spawn Wave collaboration..that would be something!
But, does it have 2 d-pads? I thought not.
Ret Zy but does it have 3 d-pads? I think not
Ret Zy but does it have 4 d-pads? I think not
Ret Zy but does it have 5 d-pads? I think not
But does it have 6 d-pads? I think not
But does it have 7 d-pads? I think not
This controller is also PERFECT for Mario Maker 2!
You can start the game thanks to the zr zl buttons but you cant make anything
But what about Mario Kartart 8 Deluxe or the original Super Mario Bros that they remade for the Nintendo Switch Wich is a game from the Nintendo Eshop
This controller is also PERFECT for Mario Maker 2... Perfect for playing levels in Mario Maker 2, not so much for the "maker" part
obviously @JayStapes meant for playing; you should be using a stylus for making.
your mom
Great flow of dialog with the deconstruction of the controller. Good insight.
For me the ZR and ZL buttons make sense because they designed the controller for the SNES games exclusively, and they’ll only be used to go back to the menu. Bothered me at first but it made sense once I used the controller!
Ah yes. The Controller that shaped the future of gamepads.
Basically. And then Sony copied that same design (minus the d-pad) and here we are today.
Until Nintendo ruined it again with the d-pad on the pro controller
Nintendo did the d pad, the 4 button face, l/r, z button trigger, 3d joy stick on controller, rumble, and first first party wireless controller on NES(was shit) first good one on GameCube, motion/gyroscope & touch. Every time Nintendo made a controller innovation Sony & Microsoft copied them later that generation or the next. Sony is still using the same controller & form as PS1/PS2 & Microsoft is still using the same controller since they got in with Xbox & revised the duke controller & changed form on 360.
Without Nintendo we would still be using Atari shit controllers.
Sony & MS have added NOTHING to controllers. Nintendo does something new every generation.
That's why I buy Nintendo consoles only, and the rest I use a PC. PlayStation & Xbox are just shitty x86 architecture PCs. They don't try anything new.
Want to see Sony trying to be original? Search PlayStation 3 Boomerang(or Banana) Controller. They intended to release a controller shaped like a boomerang, and were laughed at so hard they went back to PS2 controller, but added Nintendo's wireless tech. PS5 & Next Xbox expect HD rumble knock off, and keep the touch they stole from WiiU/DS/3DS they have now but still be the exactly the same.
Buy a PC they last 10 years if you build right. After 10 years add a new stick or 2 of ram, and buy another GPU, and 5-8 years.. You can attach your Switch/PS/Xbox controller to it through Bluetooth & Wired. Use Steam and you have your library forever. Hell Windows 10 now has xboxs game pass subscription if you want that, and you don't have to pay for expensive Xbox live or PlayStation online service for $50 or w/e a year IT'S FREE
Ironically, I’ve always hated it.
mushy If you you really think Nintendo practically created the modern controller and PS4 and Xbox are rip offs then I have news for you.
8bitdo is a beast , I love the pro. Sticks still feel perfect. Plus the shoulders feel great
The analogs have some deadzones and they do have QC issues sometimes. But yeah, 8bitdo controllers are some of the best on the market right now.
YES! bought it and tried last night right away i was like omg this is heaven
@3:55 That's the pattern from the Wiimotes...
This thing connects to the raspberry Pi and works flawlessly. Being able to play SNES on the pi is well worth the $30, but it also makes for a good PS1 and genesis controller. I've actually recently hooked up 8-bit do pro 2 to the raspberry Pi and notice a very slight bit of lag compared to the SNES official controller
This is the comment that I was looking for! So, it just gets recognized as a normal HID device and reports its buttons?
Would love to get one but they are $60 + shipping here in Canada. Nostalgia is cool but not 70 bucks cool.
They are only $40 AUD here and since I ordered 2 it was free shipping. Nintendo Canada ripping consumers off?
@@ic_trab everything in Canada is a ripoff. Ask me how I know 😭
@@ic_trab I wish the UK had free shipping. They charged me £8.70 for shipping. I wonder where they're despatching it from, Germany maybe?
ICannt Trab
It’s to cover the cost of importation from the US. Products like this in Canada almost always arrive through the US, and depending on what our government decides to tax the fuck out of while our dollar is worth nothing compared to USD, we’ll have ridiculous costs on American products. In Australia, I’m pretty sure you guys are getting shipments directly from China, or wherever these are being manufactured. It’s the only explanation considering AUD and CAD have pretty similar value.
@@DS9TREK i know that i'm probably late but it can't be germany because i live in Germany and had to pay 15€ shipping
I'm fine with my method of using an adapter that let me connect a Wii remote + SNES Classic controller
What method is that?
@@sonic2batt 8bitdo usb.
Lolcat Mayflash magic-ns
Just ordered this yesterday because my mom wants to play the games we grew up with but doesn’t understand the new controllers. Can’t wait to see her reaction
Looks like a decent controller. I had recently bought the SN30Pro anyway though as a travel controller. Also have a couple Pro controllers anyway, so I'm sorted for controllers.
I did fancy this though, for the collection. But thanks to this video, I'll probably just give it a miss anyway, since I have the SN30 Pro already.
Thanks.
8bitdo sn30 is the way to go. Can use it on more than just the Switch.
My sn30 pro was having d-pad input errors (up registering as left or right sometimes) but I upgraded to the pro+ and haven't had an issue.
Don't trust SN30 Pro Dpad
The dpad on the SN30 is rubbish. It’s overly clicky with ghost diagonals.
After 8bitdo SN30 Pro I'm not buying any controller without testing it in person, average RUclipsrs and reviewers know nothing about little important details such as input lag and fidelity on inputs.
Plus it has analogs
It's probably because you had the sound muted while recording, but using the SNES controller in the app not only changes the sidebar, it also replaces the UI sound effects with sounds from Super Mario World!
Thank you for the awesome Review . I bought one and love it !!
"And what's really funny is that they use the same kind of pattern that 8bitdo uses..." ...well, OR it could be the same pattern that the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers have. Kind of funny!
The wii remote has also the same indication lights
@MasterEpicGamer he says it as if nintendo was piggybacking off of 8bitdo when it’s obviously not the case, hence Fox LeFox pointing it out
If this was tough to come by, I can only imagine how rare the N64 controllers are going to be if they release N64 online games. Especially with all the color variations that they can use.
Stop
They wont use variation if they even do N64. Nintendo could earn a lot more money selling this accesories but the seem to underestimate the market.
I would't get an original N64 controller EVER. If they ever do I hope they make their counterpart of the N64 Brawler.
You saw the future. Although no color variations.
Lol
8:24 this is why I love Spawnwave. Anything new that comes out and you do a short review then proceed to take it apart as usual for fun
A 'short' review, he talks for the first two minutes about god know what nonsense. I had to skip around to get to actual review. Fuck his reviews, he needs to work on them. Shut the fuck up, and just review the thing!
MezzoForte4 He is just very thorough, everything he gets is bought with his OWN money. He’s not a sponsored sellout and payed or gets things for free and isn’t expected to speak positively about a product because he is trying to keep getting free stuff for reviews like other gaming/tech channels out there.
these are nice. I ended up getting the SN30 just because it included analogue sticks and the extra buttons. So I'm able to use it for games outside of the SNES app
Thanks for the link for this controller, that has been sold out since the day its came out..
Nice MMX3 Opening Stage remix in the background! 8D
I’ve had the 8bit one since launch. It’s a perfect similarity to the original. However a lot of times I always have a hard time syncing it to my switch sometimes I have to restart the Switch then most of the time it will finally connect. I may pick one of these up just to stop getting annoyed with this issue.
Update the firmware of the controller
Perfectly similar? Dude it has joysticks 😂 wtf
I've waited over one year to get this from Nintendo, as i figured the NES ones would be be pretty useless when SNES games would come to the switch, but the other way around would be possible.
So i just ordered it this night.
Can't wait to play Super Metroid with it!
Maybe they just had a lot of Labo leftover...
😂😂😂😂😂
I am not picking up any of those two controllers. But, I definitely enjoyed watching your video. Thanks.
I find it funny that Super Mario 64 in super mario 3D all stars is completely playable with this controller
Has anyone done a wireless range and/or input lag test for the Nintendo Online SNES Controller and/or
8Bitdo Sn30 Pro+? If not, Spawn Wave should do it! That type of testing is the reason I'm subscribed and notified to Spawn Wave.
Edit: Is there a good adapter to use an SNES Classic controller on the Switch? I have two with extensions I use for the SNES Classic.
I've been using the M30 to play Link's Awakening, I love that D-Pad so I use it on any game that doesn't require the right stick.
As someone who uses the SNES Classic controller on my PC, I really need to buy a couple of these as backup. Don’t want to have to resort to going back to third party controllers again, should something happen to my current two controllers.
I ordered this to have a better controller for Celeste persoaly. I ordered 3 extras for this reason-- when these inevitably go out of production I don't want to be paying 200 dollars for one
@@braidena1633 Yeah, that was my same line of thought. Went ahead and bought two. Maybe more later.
@@sammyshehole i do a lot of just in case buying. Still have an unopened snes mini. But my soul is happy knowing when I want to play it I'll have it
I got the one (for my wife but I love it) that is a snes meets ps style.
Freaking looooooooove it. After watching your in-depth review I pulled the trigger, for my wife’s bday. It’s a hell of a good rig.
SN30 Gang 💪
"8bitdo snes30"
You could use this controller for quite a few games on the switch due to its multiple buttons like the avgn adventures and all the mega drive games
I have a question, will the controller work with a game like new super mario bros u deluxe?
I prefer Super Nintendo controller just because it’s from Nintendo. For me it’s the value for years to come.
I already have the snes mini, wired has been more of my thing for the true 90's experience. If i needed wireless, touch input lags tend to show.
I had no trouble syncing to my PC, for reference, though I didn't try it much there. The sync lights don't stop flashing, but it was detected right away and everything seemed to work correctly. Direct USB connection does not work, though.
Also your L button is much louder than mine.
@@blinkz64 I've mostly tested it with Shovel Knight on Steam and Mega Man X4 through ePSXe. Both worked perfectly from what I saw, no latency or performance issues that I noticed. The only minor annoyance is the constantly flashing sync lights.
Cetega i know the switch pro controller also does this when you use it as a general Bluetooth controller
@@blinkz64 It does not, as far as I can tell. My PC didn't recognize it at all when plugged in directly.
@@Cetega The lights won't stop flashing on mine either. Did you ever find a solution for this?
@@winterreiley3502 I did not, I haven't really used it with my PC after trying it out to see how it worked there.
I have 8bitdo's Retro Receiver for the SNES and use the controller with it.
Street Fighter with the controller is always a must . Hopefully the controller don't lag .
I don't know why nobody is talking about the 8BitDo mod kit. It's only $20, but you do need an original SNES controller to install the kit into. This gets you basically a real SNES controller that works on the Switch, the 8BitDo receivers, and other Bluetooth consoles. I've got a couple of these that I bought / built originally to use with my 8BitDo receivers. I've been using them on the Swtich with the SNES games, and they work great.
Can't wait to see the N64 Controller one day "If that'll ever happen that is"
Crazy thing that it is happening!
NES clone systems came with SNES-esque controllers (similar to the ones in this video) in India, withouth the shoulder buttons and the two buttons on the extreme right, above and below, served as "turbo," buttons for the adjacent "A" and "B" buttons respectively.
I'd definitely pick the 8bitdo, basically the same but with can play the full switch library as well as having windows support.
Thanks for the playlist of Megaman X3 PSX OST = Best music ! 😄❤️🎶
This seemed really cool, glad Nintendo put quality into it!
I personally bought a 8bit do Gbros adapter because I found out it has the Wii controller port on it as well as the gamecube port, meaning it is a wireless bluetooth dongle that makes a lot of official nintendo controllers PC or Switch compatible natively, which includes but is not limited to, the official NES and SNES classic controllers. If you are alone, and do not need multiple controllers to be used at the same time but on game-need-basis, this is also essentially a lot cheaper, if you did already have a SNES classic like me (I got that thing solely for it's controllers and I keep using it's controlelrs WAY more than the console that has been relagated to being a nice decoration)
God I wish we could get the multi color buttons one x_x
3:56 They use the same kind of pattern that 8BitDo uses for the LED lights? Are you serious? Nintendo has been using square LED lights to indicate player value since Wii. They continued it with Wii U Pro Controller, Switch Pro Controller, Joy-Cons, and now with these Nintendo and Super Nintendo wireless controllers. Are you sure this isn't your first Nintendo controller?
I use the 8bitdo sn30 and you can do SELECT+DOWN to go back to the home menu. Might work with this controller.
I have two and yes! They're very high quality and I'm sure Linux/PC/Mac support via Bluetooth and USB C coming soon too.
It's been a couple of years, mind giving an update whether this does actually work on linux?
X2 is it compatible with linux this days? I haven't seen too much info abou it
The soundtrack of Megaman X3 on the PS1 / Saturn version
"Maybe they just had a lot of Labo left over." 😂😂😂😂 I fucking died laughing
The 8bitdo wireless GameCube adapter is the best option (if you have an SNES Classic controller). You get home and capture buttons, easily replaced batteries, and the use of any Nintendo classic controller (or anything else with the wii nunchuck end), as well as any GameCube ended controller!
This videos about controllers are great!!
Maybe they just have a lot of labo left over, I laughed so hard
Same here :D
*Cardboard crap!!*
I'll stick with my 8bitdo sn30 pro+. It fixed the d-pad input problems with the sn30 pro and I can easily switch between my pc and switch.
Dpad on the pro plus is still wonky for me
@@Blittsplitt5 You should exchange yours if you can. I've got hours on lumines and Puyo puyo tetris with my pro+ and so far no wrong inputs.
Love what you do with your videos
Is the pro controller d-pad able to be swapped out with this SNES d-pad?. Or a d-pad with a better rolling pin?
Cheers, love your work bro..
Just got one. Charging it now. Planning to get the N64, Genesis, and NES controllers.
Very informative as usual 👍
Love how you display the console boxes. What type of displays are they?
Is there supposed to be background music? It's so quiet yet so high-pitched that I thought it was my speakers fucking up and my wires were janked like a weird feedback issue.
I just want to know if it can work with other SNES collections on switch as well, like Megaman and Contra. You mentioned that it works with Tetris and I have several collections that I think I'd hold off on continuing to play if I can make that experience just this much more authentic to my childhood.
Thanks for the awesome videos and keep up the great work!
I don't know why I'm still tempted to buy it even though I love my SNPro 30 and don't need this
Kudos to you for using my boy's (Zero) theme!
I was hoping that Nintendo would make more of these and have them available on Amazon or their own website but to no avail. Had to buy one off a seller today since i was on the fence about getting one of these for too long.
After you called out the L button being so loud, I was expecting and curious to find out if there was any noticeable reason for it. Possibly due to the L button's board being longer than the R button's because of the antenna?
Perhaps. My L button is also louder
Awesome as this is I'll probably still get one of those hybrid ones 8bitdo makes. Just makes more sense to me since I can play more games with the 8bitdo one.
Okay is it just me, or did no one get emails about the availability of this. I was watching the Special Offers page for so long, and it was always saying it wasn't released yet. Now I can't order it at all cuz it's sold out??
Looking it up, they tweeted about it, but I didn't get that notification. Thanks Twitter :/ Now it's time to wait forever for restock, or buy from a stupid scalper
Nope, me too I clicked the email as soon as I got it and it said unavailable
I have 4. So does my brother. 8 player madness. Or maybe I can sell you guys one
Its 100. Paypal only
Just get the sn30 pro. You can use it for every switch game.
Requires the online to buy it, and isn't as versatile as 8bitdo's controllers which can be easily used on any platform with 2 button presses. Can't get Super Famicom/GB/GB Pocket color variants
I mean if you REALLY need that Nintendo logo on your controller, sure.
If Nintendo made cars I'd be complete
Good video Jon(SW). The Switch SNES Controller looks quality but if I can get one, it'll probably be a Collector's Item for me. I've just got the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+ Controller, play abit of USF2 just too check out the D-Pad and i didn't miss a Fire Ball or Dragon Punch once awesome :-D 👌 also play abit of Super Mario Kart n Jedi Outcast 2 with it aswell, it's the best 8Bitdo Controller they have done and right up there for being the best Controller you can get for the Switch.
The fragility of the type-b micro usb is a feature not a bug, they were designed to fail if excess force is applied to the cable to avoid damaging the fragile surface mount connector. A cable is cheap, a device is not, Type C cables are significantly more expensive, and more durable, but their connector is not.
Gosh I really love spawn waves subtle humor
I was not prepared for that labo joke 😂
I don't care if its use is limited. It's meant for retro gaming and nothing else. It will work just fine with the Neo Geo games I want to use it with on the Switch.
You know for a fact the other controller is the better buy. I'm watching you Spawn Wave, I'm always watching.
I bought the bluetooth diy kit from 8bitdo about a year ago. I like that I can use them on pc, ect., but I like the usb and unique menu stuff this one offers
Just ordered mine recently after I started messing around with BetterJoy (the said driver for most Switch controllers) and honestly I think it'll do more than fine as a D-Pad controller for me. Bought the online membership with leftover gold coins I had, as well as redeemed a few cool goodies from My Nintendo, so I decided it was worth getting it for the retail price as I was going to pay for shipping anyway.
Honestly, if you have a ps4 controller then just get the 8bitdo adapter for the switch. It's only 20 bucks, which is a steal. I know some people dislike the PS4 d-pad, but I've always preferred Sony d-pads to anything else.
0:53 They're trying the classic Sony box-in-box method to boost sales
Is that MegaMan X3 music playing in the background that i bearly hear?
Ikr? Its the remake version. Ps1/pc. Love the soundtrack but can barely hear it.
I'll answer for you. Oh yeah that definitely Megaman X3 playing in the background.
Mine just shipped. Hype
They aren't using the same LED setup as the 8bitdo, but 8bitdo is using the same LED setup as Nintendo. The joycons and the pro controller both use the four green LEDs.
Just an FYI if you already have the SNES Classic Mini controller, you can get the 8BitDo GBros. Adapter ($15) and connect it to Switch or PC via bluetooth (2x AA batteries) or USB directly. It also has a GameCube controller connection :)
Nintendo Switch Online SNES Controller is almost like the Wii Classic Controller because of the ZL and ZR buttons.
