      @@alexminasgerais the issue with the gamecube stick is that the underlying mechanism and sensitivity are different from an original n64 stick. it's something that's been hard to replicate, and games that are super sensitive to it like F-Zero X will make it apparently immediately. you can test for sensitivity in mario 64 as well but the difference is harder to suss out since it's mainly with tiptoe/walking speeds. even a third party controller like the retrobit I've got, while good, has sensitivity issues so I can't really play F-Zero with it, but Mario 64 and SF Rush are totally fine.

    From what I could see it wont be drop in compatible with the original stick. The original uses optical digital encoders (like gray encoding with two phase offset digital signals) while this stick centers around analog potentiometers (presents a ratiometric analog voltage). They work completely differently so would require extra circuitry to convert the signals. I was kinda hoping it was a more robustly designed version of the original stick that could be dropped into older controllers with broken sticks but looks like a no go without a microcontroller to convert the signals.

  • @koztech
    @koztech 3 года назад +15

    The old mechanism was similar to a ball mouse: sensors and "wheels" that have slits in them where the light from sensors can shine through, showing the system where the position of the object is, in this case, let's say, Mario from Super Mario 64. Sorry for those technically inclined, but wanted to describe it in a way everyone could understand it.

    From my understanding, that new stick is actually worse as we've added another set of parts that will wear down. The optical encoder wheels (that basically don't really wear down) used in the original seem to have been replaced by the same electrical resistance based mechanism modern controllers like the PS4 use (that also have drift issues with wear), meanwhile the old plastic bowl and axis parts that wore down in the original controller have been kept in this design.
    You can only hope that the lube lasts long enough and the plastics used are a bit more resistant to wear but I highly doubt that.

    • @ch3rry833
      @ch3rry833 3 года назад

      Replacing those potentiometers is pretty easy, the problem is, yeah, the plastic. It looks like they put some lube, but it's still not optimal. That's very sad if you want to speedrun N64 games, and it looks like the only solution is the Steelbowl

      There are already people and RUclipsrs out there trying to claim this is a downgrade because of its differences, but the mechanics were always a bigger problem than the type of input sensor used.
      These things always have a finite lifespan, but give it some TLC, it should hold up better than the original.

    Great video thanks for doing this. I'm late to this party! That said, I've been hearing from GoldenEye players, or people reviewing these Switch N64 controllers, that they are more sensitive than the originals. I'm wondering if you find this to be the case but you didn't mention. I also realize there is a control stick configuration that you can do within the Switch settings. From what a friend told me, on PC N64 emulation using adapters, you had to go through the Windows similar control stick configuration in order to fix sensitivity issues. But you really have to carefully configure to do it properly, at least on the Windows configuration. Like maxing out the controller to its out edges during the configuration. Just curious! I can't buy one of these yet. Still trying.

    Very good review! I want to take the time to say how much I especially like that you don't waste time or try to prolong the video by explaining the obvious like saying where every button is and what they do and are called etc. Lots of game and tech reviews are basically just plain descriptions of the products, much like you'd find in a manual or on the back of the box.
    Like, if you'd wanted to do the typical youtuber dragging this out you'd explain how to connect it and set it up, and navigate the menus and plug in the goddamn usb charger. Like none of that stuff tells anyone if it's worth their money.
    Instead, what we're given are some honest thoughts and impressions, and for that I thank you. Peace out.

    Oh that is the original bowl/stick design all the way with the exception of no more Encoder wheels, but pots. I suppose you can't really have an authentic N64 stick feel without the bowl/stick mech. They could have atleast thrown some grease in there though.

    I wonder why they bothered changing the design as much as they did? Are pots really that much cheaper than a basic optical sensor, or did they not want to add few lines of code to make one work?
    It just seems wasteful to me, would've been pretty easy to keep the internals compatible with the real thing.

    How is the joy stick in terms of sensitivity? The pro controller is way too sensitive for shooting arrows or slingshot in Zelda OOT when you can't use Z targeting... Such as the quiver and bullet bag upgrade mini games.
