    After viewing hundreds of golf tip videos I am going to say this one made more sense to me than any other one. I have a golf swing; if I position myself in the proper place and I take into account the lie of the ball; I can remove all thoughts and doubts about the outcome and hit a golf shot. Happens enough to make me want to do it again.

    • @antap

      Yes. THINK and LOOK: Lie is first (easy off a tee) distance, wind, target, no-go areas, then FEEL and Ball flight, FEEL and select what swing will/can you use to get the ball flight. Commit to the SWING you have chosen. Review.
      I like to say: "Know the swing you are going to use before you use it". Feel it.
      Example: your driver swing, your half swing swing for a 60 yard shit, lob swing, low shot into wind, high shot over trees. Different swings have differences in tempos, how the arms and wrists feel in the swing.

    I followed Bob Rotella's Golf is Not a Game of Perfect (or something like that) and basically I went from hitting toward a green or general area to aiming for a branch or tree trunk in the distance and it totally changed my accuracy.
    Also, I didn't start holing chips from the side of the green until I stopped thinking 'close to the hole' and went to seeing it go 'in the hole' in my mind.

      Good one. I can remember I think from that book a story about Hogan questioning his caddy on unfamiliar course after the caddy said something like "aim at the pine trees" to which Hogan said, "which one?".

    I tell myself, "relax and swing to the target". This works 90% of the time, which is good enough to have small misses.

    Don't hit the horses head- just tried it with a foam roller and a 4 iron. Its not just the external queue it also taps into my emotions. I do not want to hurt that horse and will do everything to avoid hitting his head. I cannot wait to take this to a golf ball tomorrow. Thank you for this.

    Ten minutes into the video and this is the nerdiest and geekiest golf video I've ever watched and I love every second of it.
    I'm assuming here, since I haven't watched all of the video(yet), but I think the starting point for all beginner and high handicap golfers is getting a mental concept and understanding of how to use the golf club. How is the club supposed to impact the golf ball? It sounds like the most obvious thing, but if you're starting from a wrong concept or understanding the brain will never tell the body how to get the job done. You can place as many external cues as you want on the practice tee, but I believe the most bang for the buck is teaching a mental concept of how the club should strike the ball. Once the high handicapper has that going for them, then you can introduce external cues; ideal for mid to low handicappers.

    Re the pros: hyper focus on the target is as basic to shot setup as assessing the lie and distance so it’s not a swing cue for them, leaving their mind free for their favorite internal cue (imho).

    If your swing has been static for awhile this makes a lot of sense. As someone who is still taking lots of lessons to fine tune my swing this seems like better advice for ~1 year from now. If I don't think of specifics like arm position at contact I totally whiff.

    This was an awesome presentation on many levels. The one question I have from all teachers is, how do you get rid of the hit impulse? Drills are fine for mechanics, and most people can do them until a ball is in front of them when everything changes which is why every high handicapper asks why their practice swing is really good but their real swing is terrible. Obviously, the ball is the issue.

    An external cue could be an intermediate target like a blade of grass 1 inch ahead of 10 o'clock on the face of the ball. The internal cue could be a waltz tempo, 1, 2, 3!

  • @richarddown6036

    Awesome insights on cues. You must be very familiar with Dr Gabriel Wulf's studies on attention focus and motor learning. Also a very good source is the "Talent Code";by Daniel Coyle.

    Is it possible to have Luke provide an example of an external cue that would work well to alleviate early extension?

    • @skyb5299
      @skyb5299 3 года назад

      I’m not Luke, but a great drill is a chair or alignment stick on your left butt cheek. Instead of moving away from that point during the downswing, you want to push into it. Extension is still necessary but this helps eliminate the ‘early’ extension. While on the course it might be a thought about rotation on that left side (if you are a righty) through a certain point.

    • @richkost566
      @richkost566 3 года назад

      Hi Kevin. I'm not Luke either. Something that worked for me was changing my posture. Go stand against a wall with your heels about 3" from the wall. Now bend down to the ball without letting your butt hit the wall. Your hips will now be centered over your ankles not back toward heels.

  • @sennett0r

    If I'm filming my swing and a new swing thought to swing more in to out produces better contact and straighter ball flight but on video, it still looks out to in or over the top; is this evidence that this new swing thought may just be a band-aid rather than actually fixing my swing path?

    • @rypgolf
      @rypgolf 3 года назад

      Ultimately, ball flight should indicate if your swing path is improving. Check your camera angle if it looks out to in but the ballflight contradicts this. A good rule of thumb: If your solid shots hit close to your target are drawing to your target then you are "inside-out" with your path. If youre solid shots hit close to your target are fading then you are "outside-in" with your path.

    @adamyounggolf1 has been using this type of methodology for a long time. His book The Practice Manual is phenomenal. My game has continued to improve exponentially via external focus work. Improving course management and using strokes gained is where I spend most of my time now. Technical swing stuff I hardly ever mess with, and most range sessions are only 30-40 balls max, largely wedge work from 100-140 yards. Would you ever try to eat a bite of food with a fork thinking about wrist angles and shoulder-arm plane? Golf doesn’t have to be that much different....

      Love the analogy to eating. Once you do something over and over it becomes unconscious. We don’t think about moving the hands when we make a left turn in a car, we just do it! This kind of falls into the study of engrams.
      Thanks!

    Actually speed should occur as early as possible in the golf swing. Golf computer analysis (GEARS) shows us that tour pros and low handicappers accelerate immediately from the top. There is no time in a split-second swing for a late “swoosh”.

    • @jeremyl1417
      @jeremyl1417 3 года назад +1

      Well the “swoosh” did change his shaft-lean so this thought did have a positive effect on his mechanics even though there “is no time”.

    • @soteroureta
      @soteroureta 3 года назад +2

      The 'swoosh' is the point where the clubhead reaches maximum speed. Acceleration is the rate of increase in speed. Don't confuse acceleration with speed. He was only trying to get Cordy to achieve more shaft lean by giving an external swing thought. You can accelerate immediately just get the swoosh later in the swing.

    • @soteroureta
      @soteroureta 3 года назад

      As far as no time in a split second swing - try this: do some air swings and get the "swoosh" to occur at 5 o'clock; now try some with the "swoosh" at 4 o'clock

    • @rypgolf
      @rypgolf 3 года назад

      Sean - Totally agree with your comment about how Tour pro's release the club. However, most amateurs release the club too early, which is why swishing late can be helpful. This advice is probably not appropriate for players that play at a high level and already have sufficient shaft lean.
